  1. The Mistake After the Mistake - How One Missed Shot Becomes Two | Episode 9

    Season 1, Episode 9

    Show notes

Have you ever missed an easy shot, kept replaying it in your head, and then lost the next point too? In this episode, Randall explores "the mistake after the mistake": how one missed shot becomes two when our reaction to it starts affecting how we play. He shows why turning a miss into a judgment about ourselves creates an extra inner struggle, how our attention can stay trapped in the last point while we're playing the next one, and why acceptance isn't giving up control of your game but letting go of the struggle with what has already happened."You are not your last shot. What matters is how you show up for the next one."If this episode helped you, please like, subscribe and share.View on the YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3Db8fGUeNA

  2. Analysis vs Awareness - Why Thinking Harder Makes You Worse | Episode 8

    Season 1, Episode 8

    Show notes

Have you ever stepped up to serve at a big moment, thought "I can't double-fault here," and then done exactly that? In this episode, Randall D. Scott explores the difference between analysis and awareness, and why thinking harder between points can make you play worse. Drawing on a former student's experience at the Australian Open juniors, the insights of J. Krishnamurti, and Zen teaching, he shows how five areas of awareness and the 4-A Process (Acknowledge, Accept, Anchor, Adjust) can help you stop getting in your own way and reconnect with the game. "Analysis can help you understand the game. But awareness allows you to experience it."

  3. The Weight of Expectations: Why You're Not Playing Your Best | Why Trying to Win, Play Well, or Meet your Own Expectations Creates Pressure and How to Break Free

    Show notes

Have you ever walked onto the court feeling prepared, only to find something change once the match began? In this episode, Randall D. Scott explores how the expectation to win, to play well, or to live up to your ranking quietly creates pressure. He also shows how to break free from it with the 4-A Process: Acknowledge, Accept, Anchor, Adjust.

“The expectation that you should win can make it harder to do the things that would help you win.”

  4. Your Opponent Isn't the Enemy. Your Story Is. | Competition As a Coming Together - Turning Opponents Into Partners

    Season 1, Episode 6

    Show notes

What if the person across the net isn't your enemy, but your partner? In this episode, Randall Scott challenges one of the least questioned ideas in competitive sport: the story that your opponent is the enemy. Drawing on more than three decades of coaching, he shows how the language of war ("fight," "attack," "destroy," "go to war with this guy") shapes the way players see the game. He also explains how that story quietly adds tension, anxiety and over-effort to their tennis. The word competition comes from the Latin competere, which means "to come together." Two players, one game, one dance. When you stop seeing your opponent as a threat and start seeing him as part of your path, you don't become less competitive. You become less divided.Randall explores why "twoness," the feeling of me versus him, is an illusion, while the game itself is oneness. He shows what a tango can teach us about competition, and how the obstacle becomes the path when your opponent becomes your teacher. Along the way he looks at the paradox of great competition through Federer and Nadal's 2008 Wimbledon final. He also shares Leo's story, from a ranking around 900 to NCAA titles and the ATP Tour, and the Taoist idea of Wu Wei: stop fighting the game. Then he gets practical, with nine tools for removing the "enemy story," including the 4 A Process, using the 83% between points, and treating your opponent as information. He closes by revealing the real opponent: not the person across the net, but the story you're telling about him.SUBSCRIBE & SHARE if this way of seeing the game resonates with you — and let's keep exploring the other 83%, together.────────────────────THE BOOK The Inner Way of Tennis – Sport & Life Playing the Game From Inside Out by Randall D. 5. Interview with James Krege | The Player, The Coach, and The Invisible Game - From Struggle to Awareness to Unobstructed Play

    Show notes

In this episode of The Inner Way of Tennis, we sit down with James Krege, Grimsley's Men's Head Coach, for a conversation that moves from struggle to awareness to unobstructed play. James shares his own journey as a player working through his serve, and what changed when he learned to meet it with awareness instead of judgment. We talk about how awareness, not analysis, is what actually changes a negative pattern, and what it means to play one point at a time, fully in the moment, instead of for the result. James walks through the 4A Process and how it becomes second nature with practice, and reflects on why the toughest opponent is often the part of yourself that gets in your own way. The conversation closes on trust, letting go of control, and what it really means to play unobstructed. This is a conversation for players, coaches, and parents who want tennis, and competition, to feel less like a fight and more like presence. 6. From Passenger to Pilot - Who's Flying the Plane? | Stop Coaching. Start Developing!

    Season 1, Episode 4

    Show notes

Every coach eventually has to answer one question: are you making your players better, or are you making them capable of making themselves better? In this episode of The Inner Way of Tennis – Sport & Life, Randall Scott explores the transition every player has to make — from passenger to pilot — and why he no longer sees himself as a coach or teacher, but as a facilitator of experience. He talks through the Socratic case for asking instead of telling, the cost of over-explaining, and the progression that moves a player from dependence to ownership: coach tells, coach asks, coach guides, coach trusts. The inner question this episode leaves you with: When your players walk onto the court without you, do they know how to fly?SUBSCRIBE & SHARE if this way of seeing the game resonates with you — and let's keep exploring the other 83%, together.────────────────────THE BOOK The Inner Way of Tennis – Sport & Life Playing the Game From Inside Out by Randall D. 7. Mollycoddling and Mediocrity | Why Parents Need to Let Kids Struggle

    Season 1, Episode 3

    Show notes

In this episode of The Inner Way of Tennis, we look at the quiet paradox behind raising resilient players — that the more parents rush in to shield their kids from every setback, the more they rob them of the very struggle that builds strength, while the kids given room to stumble, adjust, and find their own way through difficulty are the ones who grow into confident, capable competitors.SUBSCRIBE & SHARE if this way of seeing the game resonates with you — and let's keep exploring the other 83%, together.────────────────────THE BOOK The Inner Way of Tennis – Sport & Life Playing the Game From Inside Out by Randall D. 8. When Trying to Win Keeps You from Winning | The Paradox of Playing for Nothing.

    Season 1, Episode 2

    Show notes

In this episode of The Inner Way of Tennis, we look at the strange paradox at the heart of great performance — that the tightest, most anxious effort to control the outcome often gets in the way of it, while the players who become fully absorbed in the point, playing for nothing but the point itself, often play their best. It's a conversation about flow, the inner commentator, and what it means to let go of winning long enough to actually play.SUBSCRIBE & SHARE if this way of seeing the game resonates with you — and let's keep exploring the other 83%, together.────────────────────THE BOOK The Inner Way of Tennis – Sport & Life Playing the Game From Inside Out by Randall D.
