The Inspired Healthcare Leader | Healthcare Leadership, Work-Life Balance, Managing Change

Education, How To, Self-Improvement

The Inspired Healthcare Leader is a podcast for nurse managers, healthcare leaders, and directors who want exceptional results but are tired of feeling overwhelmed, stretched too thin, and like they can never quite keep up.

Healthcare leadership can be demanding. There’s a lot coming at you, and the pace rarely lets up. But it’s possible to lead well without feeling like you’re constantly chasing the day. With the right tools and support, you can feel more confident, more effective, and more in control — while creating the kind of results you’re proud of.

Each week, I’ll share practical insights, real-world stories, and strategies to help you become a more confident and effective healthcare leader while getting out from under the constant sense of overwhelm. We’ll look at what actually helps when the usual leadership advice isn’t enough — how your nervous system shapes the way you lead, why old patterns can get triggered at work, how to create influence without over-functioning, how to stop carrying what belongs to everyone else, and how to build teams and systems that make great results more sustainable.

I’m Mara Ergas-Zabari, a longtime healthcare executive, nurse leader, consultant, and leadership coach. After decades of leading healthcare teams and developing frontline leaders, I created this podcast to share what actually helps when you’re the person responsible for both the people and the results.

Because you shouldn’t have to spend your leadership career feeling like there’s never enough time, never enough of you, and always something you haven’t gotten to yet.

If you want to feel more capable, more in control of your work, and proud of the results you and your team are creating, you’re in the right place.

    Episode 95

    Show notes

Have you become so professional that you've slowly erased the very qualities that make you YOU? Maybe you used to speak your mind, challenge decisions, share crazy ideas, or bring a little more humor and personality to work. But somewhere along the way, you learned to tone it down, play it safe, and become the leader everyone expected you to be. And here's the unsettling part: You can be successful, respected, and well-liked while barely recognizing the person you've become. In this episode of The Inspired Healthcare Leader, I share five signs you may be losing yourself trying to fit in, the surprising difference between fitting in and truly belonging at work, and how to reclaim the parts of yourself that may actually be your greatest leadership strengths.

  2. 4 “Good Girl” Habits That Undermine Women Healthcare Leaders' Success – Ep: 93

    Episode 94

    Show notes

What if some of the habits you've been praised for your entire life are actually holding you back as a healthcare leader? Being humble, agreeable, selfless, and hardworking are supposed to be good things, right? But for women in healthcare leadership, these deeply ingrained “good girl” habits can come at a high cost. In this episode, uncover four ways women leaders unknowingly undermine their own success. You'll discover where these patterns come from, how they may be limiting your influence, effectiveness, and well-being, and three practical steps to start breaking free. Because becoming a more confident, influential leader doesn't mean giving up your kindness or compassion. It means recognizing when old habits are getting in your way and making choices that allow you to achieve more.

  5. Do You Need Charisma to Be a Great Leader? – Ep. 90

    Episode 91

    Show notes

Do you need charisma to be a great leader—or is charisma something we’ve misunderstood altogether? In this episode, I’m looking at what charismatic leadership actually is, whether it really makes leaders more effective, and the surprising research showing that many of the behaviors we experience as “charismatic” can actually be learned. You’ll hear what charismatic leaders do differently when they’re trying to build trust, get people on board with change, and move a resistant team forward—and why the answer is not becoming louder, more polished, or more performative. You’ll also learn four practical ways to communicate with more influence and conviction, while still sounding and feeling like yourself. If you’ve ever wondered whether you have what it takes to be a charismatic leader, this episode is for you.

  6. The Real Reason You Never Feel Fully Successful At Work – Ep. 89

    Episode 90

    Show notes

What if the reason you never feel fully successful as a healthcare leader isn’t because you haven’t accomplished enough—but because you keep moving the finish line? In this episode, we’re talking about the arrival fallacy, why healthcare leaders so often tell themselves “I’ll feel better when…” and then barely pause before chasing the next goal, fixing the next problem, or responding to the next “top priority.” You’ll learn why constantly postponing satisfaction can leave even highly successful leaders feeling like they’re never quite there, what the research says about progress, motivation, and happiness at work, and how to keep pursuing exceptional results while actually noticing—and enjoying—the success that’s already happening along the way.

    Episode 88

    Show notes

Ever walk out of a meeting thinking, “Why did that hit me so hard?” Maybe your boss questioned your idea, someone’s tone felt off, or you were left out of something—and suddenly it felt much bigger than the moment itself. In this episode I’m explaining why your 6-year-old self may be showing up in today’s meetings. You’ll learn how early relationship patterns can shape what you notice, what you assume, and how you react as a leader—and why a look, tone, silence, or disagreement can sometimes feel like rejection, criticism, or disrespect. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to recognize when your past may be coloring the present, separate what actually happened from what you made it mean, and respond from the grounded leader you are today.

  10. Crisis? Strike? Accreditation Survey? Bring on the Fun! Ep. 85

    Episode 86

    Show notes

Crisis? Strike? Accreditation survey? Fun may be the last thing on your mind—but it might be exactly what your team needs. When work gets hard, healthcare teams tend to get more serious, more task-focused, and more determined to push through. But research shows that moments of genuine joy and connection can actually help teams become more resilient, creative, and adaptable under pressure. In this episode, I’ll share what the science says about an “emotional culture of joy,” what I learned while leading my own team through an incredibly stressful strike, and four simple ways to bring more fun into even the hardest seasons—without forced games, manufactured morale, or pretending everything is okay. Because fun isn’t the opposite of serious work. Sometimes, it’s one of the things that helps us do serious work better.

When someone questions your credibility in front of everyone, what you do next matters. Being thrown under the bus at work can trigger an almost irresistible urge to set the record straight. But these moments can also become an opportunity to show people exactly who you are as a leader. In this episode, you’ll learn how to protect your credibility without looking defensive, how to decide when to speak up and when to let it go, what to say when you do need to correct the record, and how to avoid getting pulled into a battle over who’s right. Because being undermined doesn’t have to diminish your leadership. Handled well, it can become one of those moments when your leadership rises to the occasion.

  12. You Can’t Self-Care Your Way Out Of An Unhealthy Workplace – Ep 83

    Episode 84

    Show notes

Meditate. Exercise. Set boundaries. Get enough sleep. All good advice—but what happens when the real problem isn’t your ability to handle the stress, but the conditions creating it? In this episode, I challenge one of healthcare leadership’s most persistent assumptions: that when work becomes unsustainable, leaders simply need to become more resilient. You’ll discover how capable leaders can actually hide organizational problems by continually finding a way to make things work, how to tell when you need to do something differently versus when the work needs to change, and three practical ways to create healthier working conditions—even when you don’t control the staffing, budget, or larger organization. Because self-care matters. But you can’t self-care your way out of an unhealthy workplace.

    Episode 83

You’ll learn how to strategically pull back the curtain and share what you’re doing so you can reduce cynicism, build trust, and help your team become stronger partners in solving the challenges you face together.
