The Dish Came Back
Season 3, Episode 2
Show notes
Sister Beverly's chicken-and-rice pan comes back on a Thursday, carried up the walk by Charlie Pruitt — and it has been washed, and dried, and the towel folded on top of it. Allison Jones, who is eleven and keeps a notebook, is certain that means something, and sets about working out what. She has two columns going: things that are true, and things they might mean. The second column is where the trouble is. So she carries the question across the street to the one woman in that church who has been taking dishes to doors for thirty-one years — and gets an answer she did not want, which is that Sister Beverly has never once known either, and quit trying a long time ago. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 11:1; Mark 4:26-27 (KJV).

The Truck on Saturday
Season 3, Episode 1
Show notes
A moving truck turns up on the street on a Saturday in October, two doors down from the Thompsons, and nobody comes to help the family unload it. Mom notices that first. Addison notices the lamp with no shade. Sister Beverly is at the door inside the hour with a dish, because that is who she is, and gets no further than the step. Then all five Jones children walk over with a plate of cookies and meet Charlie Pruitt, who is eleven and carrying boxes like a grown woman — and who says six words to Ava Grace that she cannot answer, because the one thing Ava Grace has never done in her life is pretend. The plate comes home full. What the family does next is the whole story. Scripture: Luke 6:35; 1 John 4:19 (KJV).

Somebody Else's Day
Season 2, Episode 25
Show notes
It is a short engagement and a small wedding, and there is a great deal to do. Allison has the binder open to somebody else's day, and this time she asks before she decides. Andy has been without a red ball since the afternoon he carried his across the street, and will not take a new one. The night before, Ava Grace asks the question nobody else thought to ask — what happens if Brother Thompson forgets? On a Saturday in September, in front of a room holding every face that waited a year alongside him, a slow man says his piece in his own plain voice, and a two-year-old finds out where his ball has been the whole time. And when the last of it is cleared away, two chairs sit out on a porch that only ever had one. The Season Two finale.

The Binder
Season 2, Episode 24
Show notes
After a year of being told to wait, Brother Thompson asks Dad and Pastor Garrett one more time — and this time the answer is yes. Allison Jones, eleven years old and the finest organizer in the congregation, hears the news and does what Allison does: she gets a binder. Tabs. A timeline. A rain plan. It is genuinely beautiful work, and Brother Thompson, who is newer in the Lord and gentle to a fault, says yes to every bit of it. Then Allison walks past his porch with a printed schedule and hears him practicing what he actually wants to say — plain, stumbling, out loud, to his dog — and understands that there is nowhere in her beautiful plan for him to simply talk. What it costs her to close that binder is the whole story.

One Verse
Season 2, Episode 23
Show notes
Sister Johnson puts a bare paper tree on the classroom wall, and every verse a child learns by heart earns a leaf. Ana is fast — gloriously, effortlessly fast — and by the third week she has twenty-six leaves and a number she cannot stop saying out loud. Ava Grace picks one verse. A long one, with a word in it she does not understand, and she works on it for three weeks without earning a single leaf. Then Ana finishes her little sister's verse for her in front of the whole class, and is entirely correct, and something breaks anyway. When Ana's own turn comes and the words go clean out of her head, it is the sister she embarrassed who crosses the room. A story about the difference between knowing a thing and spending it. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:4; 1 Corinthians 8:1; Proverbs 27:2 (KJV).

The Prettiest Thing
Season 2, Episode 22
Show notes
Addison Jones knows that the detail is where the meaning lives. On art day in Sister Suarez's classroom she builds a paper street so lovely the whole class gathers to look at it — gold-paper windows, a striped awning, a tiny dog on the corner. Three tables over, a boy named Dexter is working just as hard on a street of his own. Then a jar of muddy rinse water goes over, and in the space of one second Dexter's whole world is ruined, the room leans away, and there is no grown-up in the doorway to fix it. What Addison does next costs her a good sweater, a pretty pair of hands, and the admiration she had been quietly enjoying — and she finds out that the prettiest thing in the room was never on anybody's desk at all.
Scripture: Mark 10:43-44; Philippians 2:3 (KJV).

Houston, We Have a Problem
Season 2, Episode 21
Show notes
Every Sunday the Pastor's family sits in the pew right in front of the Joneses — Pastor Garrett, Sister Garrett, and their littlest, Houston, who is just about Andy's age and just about Andy's favorite person in the world. The two of them have struck up the wobbly, joyful friendship of two two-year-olds. Which is exactly why it is such a catastrophe when they get into it over Andy's red ball, right in the middle of service. The babies are over it in roughly four seconds.
The Jones sisters are not.
Certain that somebody must be right and somebody must be wrong, the girls set out to settle the case — and end up in a far bigger fight than the one they were trying to judge. A warm story about brotherly love, and about the wide difference between keeping the peace and keeping score.
Scripture: Matthew 5:9; Ephesians 4:32 (KJV).

Enough
Season 2, Episode 20
Show notes
It is an ordinary week at the Jones house, which is to say it is a full one — and this time the story belongs to the one who holds it all together. The dishwasher quits on a Monday. The to-do list grows back overnight like grass. And Mom, moving through it the way she always does, catches herself living a little way out ahead of her own life: once this is finished, then I’ll rest; once things settle, then it will be good. But the settling never quite comes. It takes a dropped plate, a devotion turned around on her for once, and four plain words from her youngest girl to help Mom see the thing she is always telling everybody else — that thanks is not something you save for when everything is finished, and that what she has, unfinished and ordinary and loud, was already more than enough. Scripture: Philippians 4:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV).

The First Day
Season 2, Episode 19
Show notes
Summer is over, and the Jones children head into a new school year at Glendale Christian Academy — where, this year, the halls are full of family. Their aunts, aunt Jessica and aunt Tanya, are teachers; their grown cousins, the twins Alexis and Alyssa, are classroom aides for the very first time. So when the first-day jitters give way to a building stacked with people who love them, the Joneses are reminded that God really does go in with you. But there is one boy at the cubbies who has none of that — Micah, brand-new in town, crying quietly with nobody in the world to sit by. And Ava Grace, six years old and wrapped in more belonging than she can hold, discovers that once God has gone in with you, He has a way of turning you right around to go in with somebody else. Scripture: Joshua 1:9; Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV).

Say It Soft
Season 2, Episode 18
Show notes
Of all the Jones children, Ava Grace speaks the least — and somehow says the most. For six years her family has treasured the way she can put the truest thing into the fewest words, because those words always came wrapped in love. But this week the love slips off, and the true things start coming out sharp. When Addison steps out one Sunday morning in an outfit she took a brave chance on, Ava Grace looks at her with those big honest eyes and says the plain true thing — and watches, for the very first time, a face fall because of her. The colors really were fighting. Being right does not help one bit. With Mom’s honey, Dad’s open Bible, and a lesson about pleasant words, Ava Grace learns that truth and kindness were always meant to travel together — and that the very same true thing can be handed over soft. Scripture: Ephesians 4:15; Proverbs 16:24 (KJV).

The Seed and the Second Chair
Season 2, Episode 17
Show notes
Sister Beverly gives Ana a paper envelope of sunflower seeds, and Ana plants them along the fence with plans for blooms taller than Dad. Then she discovers there is nothing to do but wait — and waiting has never been Ana’s strong suit. That same week, Brother Thompson goes to Dad and to the Pastor with the biggest question of his life: he wants to ask Sister Beverly to marry him. The counsel he receives is one small word. Wait. To Ana, who is seven and in a hurry, wait sounds an awful lot like no — until a dug-up seed, a quiet porch, and a secret she must carry all by herself teach her the difference. A warm story about God’s timing, godly counsel, and the things that are growing right now where nobody can see them. Scripture: Psalm 27:14; Galatians 6:9 (KJV).

Not in That Armor
Season 2, Episode 16
Show notes
Addison has to say her memory verse in front of the whole church on Sunday evening, and she has spent two weeks planning exactly what she will wear. The verse is not the problem. Being looked at is. Meanwhile, after Sunday school tells the story of David and the giant, two-year-old Andy falls asleep with his red ball in his fist — and dreams himself down into the valley of Elah, where the armor is far too big, the giant is far too loud, and the smallest person in Israel has exactly one word and one red ball. Andy cannot tell a soul what he dreamed. But when Addison stands trembling at the back of the church in the perfect outfit that is not helping her one bit, a toddler toddles up and hands her something small and round. A dream-episode about going out in your own clothes, in the name of the Lord. Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:47; Psalm 56:3 (KJV).

Born of the Water and Spirit
Season 2, Episode 15
Show notes
The welcome the Jones girls gave a lonely camper up in the pines has borne fruit: Abigale comes to church. She keeps coming back, too, drawn by something she cannot yet name — and one Sunday she asks the question that changes everything: how does a person come to Jesus? Allison and Addison, who are only children themselves, discover that they know more than they thought. With Allison’s careful order and Addison’s tender eye for what things mean, the two of them open the Book and show their friend the old apostolic way: repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. With Sister Ward, Brother Thompson, Sister Beverly, and the whole Jones family looking on, Abigale is born of the water and of the Spirit. A joyful story about the fruit of one small light. Scripture: Acts 2:38 (KJV).

A Light in the Pines
Season 2, Episode 14
Show notes
School is out, and Dad, Allison, and Ana head up into the pines for Junior Camp — a week of cabins and campfires, of cold mornings and the smell of pancakes on the wind. Allison arrives with a binder and a plan, ready to run the tidiest cabin at camp. But when a quiet new girl named Abigale appears in the doorway of Cabin Seven — knowing no one, unsure of every song and every routine — Allison discovers that the most important thing at camp is not the thing she prepared for. Through Ana’s effortless, headlong friendliness, Sister Beverly’s quiet example, and a campfire message from Brother Alexander, the Jones girls learn that you are never too young to be a light — and that sometimes the brightest thing a child can do is simply make room for one more. Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:12; Matthew 5:16 (KJV).

Be Still
Season 2, Episode 13
Show notes
It is summer, and Ana — the fastest, loudest, most perpetually-in-motion of the Jones children — cannot imagine a day worth slowing down for. But one ordinary evening, worn out at last, she falls asleep and opens her eyes somewhere she has never been: a small wooden boat on a wide sea, with weather-beaten fishermen at the oars and a Man asleep in the stern. When a sudden storm turns the water to mountains and even grown men cry out in fear, Ana discovers there is one storm she cannot outrun. Then the Man stands, speaks three quiet words — “Peace, be still” — and the wind lies down at once. In the great calm that follows, the stillness reaches all the way inside the girl who is never still.
A dream-episode about the peace the Lord gives in the very middle of the storm. Scripture: Mark 4:39 (KJV).

The Best Seat in the Back
Season 2, Episode 12
Show notes
For the first time, the story turns to Dad. As the church prepares for a Homecoming Sunday—a visiting preacher, a packed service, and dinner on the grounds—it is Dad, the Pastor’s Assistant, who quietly makes every piece of it happen: the squared chairs, the filled water glass, the corner fan he stayed late to fix. When the day arrives and the thanks land everywhere except on him, it is Addison—the one who notices every small detail—who feels the injustice on her father’s behalf. But Dad has learned something about the back of the room, and about work done not unto men but unto the Lord. A gentle story about hidden faithfulness, the freedom of serving without applause, and the One who never misses a single chair. Scripture: John 3:30; Colossians 3:23 (KJV).

Beautiful in Its Time
Season 2, Episode 11
Show notes
On a long summer evening, the Jones family welcomes Brother Thompson and Sister Beverly into their home for the first time as a courting couple. For Ana—who lives at full speed and loves nothing more than the good part—the slow, steady pace of their courtship feels like a wedding that simply will not hurry up. As the evening settles onto the front porch, with lemonade and lightning bugs and Pickles asleep between two chairs, Ana begins to wonder why something so good should take so long. Through Dad’s gentle devotion and Brother Thompson’s quiet confidence, the family discovers a season they hadn’t thought to treasure—and the truth that God makes everything beautiful in His time. A tender story about patience, presence, and learning to love the waiting. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11 (KJV).

What Andy Knows
Season 2, Episode 10
Show notes
On Monday morning, Papa had emergency eye surgery. By Thursday, the doctors say he is doing well — but the word emergency has been sitting in the Jones household all week like a guest nobody invited. The older children are quiet in their own ways, careful with their words and their footsteps, carrying a worry they don’t quite have language for yet. And then Papa comes to stay for a few days while he recovers — and Andy, who is two years old and has no framework for emergency or surgery or careful, walks straight up to Papa, places his red ball in Papa’s hands, says “ba,” and climbs up beside him like nothing in the world has changed. Because for Andy, nothing has. Papa is Papa. And that turns out to be the most important thing anyone says all week.

The Better Feeling
Season 2, Episode 9
Show notes
School is out, the days are long, and Mom has enrolled all four sisters in a summer art workshop at the community center — three mornings a week, brushes and color and something to do with the hours. It is a good plan right up until the Wednesday the instructor holds up Ava Grace’s painting as the example for the whole class. Not Allison’s careful, methodical piece. Not Addison’s composed and intentional one. Not Ana’s bold, full-color expression. Five-year-old Ava Grace’s. Each older sister carries something home that afternoon that she didn’t have when the morning started — something small and sharp and not entirely comfortable to look at directly. When Dad opens Proverbs and First Corinthians at the table that evening, the Jones family discovers that envy is never really about what someone else received. And in the warm close of a summer evening, news arrives about Brother Thompson and Sister Beverly that reminds every person in the room what it looks like when love gets it right.

The Long Middle
Season 2, Episode 8
Show notes
Allison Jones is eleven years old, which means she is old enough to know exactly where she doesn’t belong and not quite old enough to know where she does. When the church Ladies’ Tea puts her squarely between the children’s craft table and the women’s conversation circle with nowhere comfortable in the middle, she carries that quiet ache home without quite having words for it. What the Jones family discovers together — at the dinner table, in the living room, and in the steady pages of First Corinthians and Jeremiah — is that the in-between is not a mistake in the timing. It is a season, and every season has a purpose. And in a quiet moment after Sunday service, something Brother Thompson says to Dad suggests that growing into the next thing — whatever it is — requires exactly the courage this family has been practicing all along.
