Then we play Scenarios — matching comic book characters to the nighttime jobs they'd actually be good at. Who do you want on the night shift? Who's driving the bus at 3am? Who do you trust to tell a bedtime story?

Illyana Rasputin steps through a portal as a little girl and comes back a teenage sorceress. This week we're reading Magik: Storm and Illyana, Chris Claremont's 1983 limited series about the seven years Colossus's little sister spent trapped in Limbo — while barely a moment passed on Earth.

We get into Belasco, the Soulsword, the bargains Illyana makes to survive, and how startlingly dark this book is for a mainstream Marvel comic in 1983. We also talk about where Magik goes after this, and why she's found a much larger audience in the last few years than she ever had at the time.

Plus we put ourselves on the spot with a Jeopardy-style X-Men quiz — five categories, escalating difficulty, and at least one answer none of us had any excuse for missing.

In 1989 Marvel let Roger Stern and Mike Mignola make a graphic novel about Doctor Doom rescuing his mother's soul from Hell. It's still the best Doom story anyone has written. Doom wins a contest of sorcerers, which entitles him to a favor from the winner of the last one — Doctor Strange. He spends it going into Mephisto's realm to free Cynthia von Doom. Andy, Chad, and Mikey read it and get into why Doom works better as a tragic figure than a conqueror, what Mignola was doing with light and shadow years before Hellboy, and whether this is the book to hand someone who only knows Doom from the movies.
