Six goals, a Barcola hat-trick and some much-needed smiles — but can Liverpool carry that confidence into the Premier League? Stu Wright and Gareth Roberts look back at the 6–3 win over LASK, with Wirtz finding his rhythm, Rio and Trey impressing, and a special Champions League moment for Lewis Koumas. There’s plenty to celebrate, but familiar defensive concerns remain. Can Frimpong’s attacking threat outweigh his vulnerability at the back? Then it’s Brentford away. After last season’s bruising visit, we assess Keith Andrews’ side, the key battles and how Liverpool can turn possession into proper chances. Plus, Lisandro Martínez takes aim at Manchester United’s hierarchy, Manchester City get a European reality check against PSG, and we make our predictions for Saturday.

Liverpool lose 3-0 to Manchester City at Anfield, but the scoreline only tells part of the story.
Gareth Roberts and Mo Stewart are in the studio to pick through a match that changed dramatically after the red card. Was Liverpool’s performance better than the result suggests? What about the refereeing decisions? And what should we make of the contributions of Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola, Lewis Koumas and Ryan Gravenberch?
There’s also the bigger picture. Andoni Iraola’s Reds have nine points from six games, and plenty of questions remain about the team’s start to the season.
And, of course, there’s Manchester City. The cheating scandal, the arguments around it, the integrity of the Premier League and the increasingly absurd situation English football finds itself in.
Liverpool lost. But does it even count?

Can Liverpool stop Manchester City at Anfield and how do we feel about playing them in the first place? Gareth Roberts is joined by Stu Wright for the latest Midweek Sports Special from The Late Challenge. We discuss the latest on City’s financial scandal, the appeal, potential punishments and compensation - and whether English football can emerge from this with any credibility intact. Then it’s onto the pitch. Can the Reds expose City’s defensive vulnerabilities? Who’s fit, who starts and should Liverpool go straight for their throats? All that, plus the Anfield atmosphere and what beating City would mean beyond the three points.

Man City found guilty of serious financial breaches across nine seasons – sham sponsorships, disguised owner funding, £900m+. Stu Wright & Mo Stewart ask how City got past UEFA & CAS, what rivals lost (Liverpool 2014, Klopp's 97 points) and what punishment could ever be proportionate.

Welcome to the first Midweek Sports Special in the studio from The Late Challenge. Gareth Roberts and Stu Wright get stuck into the latest Liverpool FC talking points, including Bradley Barcola, what the numbers tell us about the French winger and what his arrival could mean for the rest of the squad. We also look at some of the increasingly wild verdicts on Alexander Isak. Is he really injury prone? Can he actually “string games together”? And is anyone remotely justified in writing him off after such a small sample in a Liverpool shirt? There’s more transfer chat too, including Gakpo, Elliott, Minteh, Sarr and Alex Scott, before attention turns to Iraola’s first Prem match at Anfield. What should Liverpool change after Newcastle? How dangerous could Oliver Glasner’s Forest be? And where is the hope-ometer heading as the new season gets properly underway? Midweek Sports Special will initially be available free before becoming an extra show for Patreon subscribers and YouTube members.
