The Life Coach for Working Moms Podcast
This is the show where we are talking about what it actually takes to make life work as a working mom.
From time management, setting boundaries and identifying priorities to being present and finding fun, joy, and rest amidst the chaos, working mom life is full and complex, but you don't have to wait to enjoy it.
I'm Katelyn Denning, a full-time working mom of 3 and a certified life and executive coach. I spent over 16 years in the corporate world juggling all of the different roles and responsibilities as a mom, professional, and woman.
If you're a working mom who values your professional career AND who wants to be a present parent with time for things that aren't just about work and parenting, you're in the right place.

133 - Good Enough Is Good Enough: How to Decide Faster This Holiday Season
Season 3, Episode 133
Show notes
The holidays are here, and the list keeps growing. Gifts, cards, menus, family plans, and everything already on your plate. But what separates a season with energy to spare from one where you're scrambling at the end often comes down to one thing: how quickly you decide.
Every open loop (which card design to choose, which gift, whose house, green beans or carrots) drains your time and energy until you close it. In this solo episode, I'm sharing why swift decisions are the biggest favor you can do for yourself this season.
You'll hear how a simple gift decision and a family gathering plan change once you decide, how to ask, "how much time is this decision worth?", and how to batch your decisions so they actually get made.
And if you want to build your holiday plan and your to-decide list with me, join me for the Stress Less This Holiday workshop this Thursday, November 5 at 12:00 PM ET. Tickets are $29 at www.themothernurture.com/holiday.

132 - Do Working Moms Really Have Time for a Hobby?
Season 3, Episode 132
Show notes
Most working moms can't remember the last time they did something just because they enjoyed it. No goal, no finish line, no finished product to share. No wonder we reach for our phones every spare minute. If we're not crossing something off the to-do list, what else is there?
My guest this week, Alice O'Connell, is a knitting teacher, a former TV and theater actress, a mom, and the founder of Learn to Knit Online. She teaches busy, high-achieving women around the world, and what she sees most of her students struggle with isn't really about knitting. It's about what happens when we let ourselves slow down and be a beginner.
You'll hear why a hobby doesn't have to be productive to be worth your time, why "slower" hobbies are the perfect antidote to our screen-heavy lives, and how being bad at something new builds resilience that carries over into all other areas of your life. And if you're not even sure what hobby you'd pick up, you'll learn how to start the search even if you think you have no time.
This episode is a must-listen for any working mom who wants a real break from her phone and her to-do list.
And if you don't want to wait until the holidays are over to find time for something like knitting, come join me for Stress Less This Holiday - my holiday planning workshop. You'll organize your lists, make your plan, and ensure it all fits on the calendar so that you might actually have a little space to relax or do something for yourself. It's happening on Nov. 5th. Get your ticket at www.themothernurture.com/holiday.

131 - Can You Really "Have It All" as a Working Mom?
Season 3, Episode 131
Show notes
Working moms today spend more time with their kids than stay-at-home moms did a generation ago, while men's time on housework has barely changed. No wonder so many of us are exhausted.
My guest, Dr. Corinne Low, is an economist, a Wharton professor, and the author of Having It All: What Data Tells Us About Women's Lives and Getting the Most Out of Yours. She uses data to show where our time really goes and what we can change about it. You'll hear why chores are divided less equally than parenting, how to track your time and your partner's without starting a fight, and why not outsourcing a task means hiring yourself to do it. You'll also learn why most working moms want boundaries more than flexibility.
This episode is a must-listen for any woman who appreciates understanding the data behind how the system actually works, especially for working moms who are doing more than we've ever done before.

130 - How to Get Ready for the Holidays Before They Take Over
Season 3, Episode 130
Show notes
From now until the end of the year we add a whole second list on top of everything else and just expect that we'll somehow fit it all in. It's no wonder working moms feel exhausted by the new year!
I train for the holidays the way I trained for my first half marathon. I put the mileage recommendations on my calendar, week by week, with deadlines. That's the difference between a list and a plan, and it's why a plan helps you pace yourself and see where you can share the load instead of doing it all alone.
But the hardest part of planning isn't making the list or breaking down the steps. It's protecting the time to sit down and do it in the first place. In this episode, I'm talking about why that's so hard for working moms, and why having some accountability makes it easier to follow through.
I'm hosting my sixth annual holiday planning workshop, Stress Less This Holiday, on Thursday, November 5th at 12:00 PM Eastern (9:00 AM Pacific) to help you protect the time on your calendar to make your most important plan this season. In 90 minutes, you'll get everything out of your head, draft your November and December calendar with tasks assigned by week, and schedule your next three action items. Tickets are $29 at www.themothernurture.com/holiday.

129 - How to Ask Your Partner for Help Without Starting a Fight
Season 3, Episode 129
Show notes
What if the fight about the dishwasher was never about the dishwasher? Working motherhood is hard, and when you're carrying more than your fair share of the mental load, it's easy to say "I feel like I'm doing everything and you're doing nothing," an argument you've had many times before.
My guest, Ali Miller, is a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified coach. She teaches us how Nonviolent Communication (NVC) changes that conversation by naming the need underneath it so you can connect and solve the problem instead of arguing and feeling disconnected.
You'll also learn how to start when your partner isn't on board, how to use NVC with your kids, and a five-minute first step you can take today. If I had to summarize this episode with an emoji, it would be the mind-blown emoji π€―

128 - Why Time Blocking Doesn't Work for Working Moms (and What to Do Instead)
Season 3, Episode 128
Show notes
If you've ever tried time blocking and thought "this doesn't work for me", this episode is for you.
Time blocking is hard for working moms. Kids get sick, deadlines move, and the hour you set aside for email disappears into whatever caught fire that morning. Once you start dismissing those calendar reminders, your brain stops seeing them at all (just like that pile of clothes in the corner!).
In this solo episode, I'm sharing a flexible approach to time blocking that I use in my own calendar and recommend to my clients. Instead of recurring blocks, you set limits: how many hours of meetings you can handle in a day, how much time you need for email, and how much focused work you need to get done. Then you look two weeks ahead on a rolling basis and protect that time before anyone else takes it. You stay proactive with your calendar and still have room for real life.
If you've tried time blocking and quit, this might be the version that works. Listen in for how to get started.

127 - Why Finishing Your To-Do List Won't Make You Feel Better
Season 3, Episode 127
Show notes
Working motherhood is hard, and most of us believe that if we just got through the list, we'd finally feel calm. But what if your to-do list isn't the reason you feel overwhelmed?
My friend Ashley Solomon is a licensed clinical psychologist, writer, and founder of Galia Collaborative and in this episode, she explains why this keeps happening with her idea of "Story After State". The feeling in your body comes first, and the story you tell about it comes second. That story turns a messy kitchen into resentment, or a full calendar into "I'll never get this done." Clearing the counter doesn't change the story. Calming your body does.
You'll hear how to calm your body in the middle of a full day (even with two minutes), how to catch the stories driving your mood, and why stress does less harm when you stop treating it as the enemy.
This week, I'm checking in with my body before I touch my list.

126 - What to Wear When You Don't Feel Like You Anymore
Season 3, Episode 126
Show notes
What if the woman in the mirror staring back at you doesn't feel like you anymore?
I sit down with stylist Jess Burns this week, and we get into why getting dressed feels so hard when you're a working mom with zero extra minutes in the morning but how it can be one of the easiest ways to start feeling like yourself again. Jess left a decade of teaching preschool to become a stylist almost by accident, and now she helps women stop guessing and start dressing with intention. We talk about the fastest ways to plan outfits without spending hours on it, why your closet is probably full of things you like on other people and not on yourself, and how color analysis can genuinely cut your shopping time in half.
This one will change how you think about the ten minutes you spend getting dressed every morning.

125 - 4 Organizing Myths Keeping Your Home (and Brain) Cluttered
Season 3, Episode 125
Show notes
What if getting organized has nothing to do with buying the perfect bins and is simply knowing what you have and being able to find it when you need it. That's it. No new containers required.
I sat down with Tracy Hoth, founder of The Organized Coach and Organized Life Academy, to talk about organizing your calendar, how to sort before decluttering, and what to do when you're paralyzed by a space that's been cluttered for years.
We get into her SPACE method, the real reason containers should be your last step instead of your first, and how asking what feeling you want a space to hold can guide every decision you make in it.
This episode gave me language for something I already believed: staying organized is ongoing, not a one-time fix. I'm walking away ready to treat my own cluttered spaces as projects instead of proof that I'm failing, and I'll be setting a 15-minute timer this week to prove it to myself. I bet you'll be ready to join me too by the end of this episode!

124 - Are You Teaching Your Kids to Dread Adulthood?
Season 2, Episode 124
Show notes
What if the picture you're painting about adulthood is making your kids dread growing up? An Instagram post from another mom who talked about choosing to see her responsibilities as privileges, not burdens, stopped me in my tracks and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.
Adulting IS hard. There are so many responsibilities, decisions, and things that we have to do. And how many times have our kids heard us complain about how exhausted we are by all of it?
In this episode, I talk about my commitment to sharing not just the challenges of adulting, but the highs, the good times, the perks, and privileges too. I don't want my kids to be in a rush to grow up. I'm certainly not ready for them to. But I know that it'll happen eventually, and I don't want them to dread it.

123 - I Tried 'Brick' to Break My Phone Habit. Here's What Changed.
Season 2, Episode 123
Show notes
I tried Brick, the little device that physically locks you out of your phone apps until you walk over and tap back in, and I'm sharing exactly what happened. This isn't sponsored and I'm not trying to sell you something. It's just my honest experience after a few months of using it to break habits I didn't love: scrolling in bed after my alarm went off, disappearing into my phone during the 5-8pm family window, and reaching for it during my most focused work hours.
If despite your best efforts you are still on your phone more than you'd like, this episode will help you zero in on the real issue, identify what it's costing you, and then think about potential solutions that will help you spend more time in your real life and less time on your phone. Whether or not you use the Brick is totally up to you. But I'm walking you through what I learned so you can decide if it's worth trying for yourself.

122 - The Time Management Skill Working Moms Actually Need
Season 2, Episode 122
Show notes
You can have the most organized calendar in the world, and it won't matter the moment the nanny calls off, your kid gets sick, or your car won't start. It's why the most important skill you can develop as a working parent is flexibility. The flexibility to rework your schedule, shorten your to-do list, and get creative with how to get things done.
In this episode I share the self-talk I use to reset my expectations, how I decide what actually has to get done when everything shifts, and how to adjust without losing momentum or burning out. If you're a working parent whose plans keep getting blown up by real life, this episode gives you a way to respond that still moves you forward.

121 - The Fall Reset Every Working Mom Needs
Season 2, Episode 121
Show notes
There's something about back to school that hits different, even when you're not the one walking through the school doors. Our kids get the fresh notebooks, the new outfit, the clean slate. We just... keep working. In this episode, I'm talking about how to use that back-to-school energy for yourself this fall!
I'm sharing why I wait to make changes until after the first week of school, how I'm using the concept of essentialism to choose just a few priorities for this season instead of trying to do it all, and the exact three things I'm focusing on this fall in my home, my business, and beyond. If you've been waiting for the "right" moment to pick something back up or start something new, this is it.
Listen in for a practical way to think about seasonal resets, how to narrow your focus without the guilt, and why working moms especially need to give themselves a fresh start every now and then, not just once a year.

120 - Back to School Checklist for Busy Moms: What to Do Before the First Day
Season 2, Episode 120
Show notes
It's back to school season, and if you're anything like me, that means your brain is already running a mental checklist of book bags, lunchboxes, and school supplies. But this episode isn't just a list of errands to check off. I'm sharing everything I'm doing over these next couple of weeks to get my family (and myself) ready for the transition, from the practical stuff like schedule shifts and morning routines, to the part we don't talk about enough, which is managing our own expectations as the ones holding it all together.
I walk you through how I'm shifting bedtimes and wake times without the shock of an abrupt change, how I'm reducing decision fatigue for my kids (and me) with simple systems for lunch and breakfast, and why the way I think about this season matters just as much as anything on my to-do list.
If you've ever felt like the back-to-school transition hits you harder than it should, this is for you.

119 - You Are Not Your To-Do List
Season 2, Episode 119
Show notes
When's the last time someone asked, "What's new with you?" and the honest answer was... nothing? Just more tasks. More logistics. More chores.
I've been noticing this in my own life lately - how conversations with my husband have turned into status updates. How "how was your day" gets answered with a list of what got done instead of what I actually thought or felt or laughed about. And I know I'm not the only one.
In this episode, I'm talking about what happens when working moms slowly stop being a full person and start being project managers. I share a story about a former coaching client whose "article night" with her husband brought back a part of her she'd almost forgotten existed, plus a few small, doable shifts you can make this week to remember there's a human under that to-do list.
In this episode:
β’
Why your to-do list was never meant to be your whole identity
β’
A simple weekly practice for reconnecting with your partner beyond logistics
β’
Three small ways to make space for the "you" outside of your tasks

118 - Sleep vs. 'Me Time': The Trade Working Moms Don't Want to Make
Season 2, Episode 118
Show notes
It's the debate all working moms have with themselves - do I go to bed on time or do I stay up to finally have some time to myself?
This week I'm talking about the thing that comes up in coaching almost every single week: sleep. Not because it's exciting or Instagram-worthy self-care, but because it might be the most underrated productivity tool we have.
I get into why I used to think protecting my evening "me time" was sacred, the real cost of staying up late (hello, snapping at your partner over nothing), the phone-battery analogy that finally made this click for me, and how a longtime coaching client rebuilt her sleep habits this summer with just a couple of small, boring shifts. Plus, three simple things you can test this week if you're ready to treat your bedtime like the productivity tool it actually is.
If you've ever told yourself "I'll go to bed early tomorrow" and then stayed up anyway, this one's for you.

117 - 4 Ways to Actually Do the Thing You Keep Saying You'll Do
Season 2, Episode 117
Show notes
In this episode, I'm digging into why we say we need to do something more than we actually do it, and what that gap is quietly costing us. Because every time you say, "I should really do that" and then don't, you're eroding trust with yourself.
It's the same reason your kid raises an eyebrow when you tell them to get off their phone while you're scrolling yours. What we DO speaks so much louder than what we SAY, including to ourselves.
I'm walking through the exact four options I give myself and my clients anytime something is sitting on the "I need to do that" list and going nowhere β whether that's the donation pile, your pelvic floor exercises, that SOP document, or the permission slip deadline. No more vague guilt. Just a clear decision tree so you can stop saying it and start doing it.
If you're a working mom who's tired of watching your to-do list grow while your follow-through stays flat, this is for you.

116 - Why "Just for This Season" Keeps Turning Into Forever (And How to Stop It)
Season 2, Episode 116
Show notes
In this episode, I'm talking about that exact moment: the one where you've dropped a ball or burned the candle at both ends one too many nights, and you finally have to decide what to let go of. I share two of my own stories β giving up running after my first child was born, and later stepping out of a travel-heavy sales role after my third β and why both of those choices, while hard, weren't permanent verdicts on who I am.
Because here's the trap I see so often with working moms: we make a smart, necessary choice to scale back for a season, and then that "for now" quietly turns into "just how things are" for years, without us ever checking back in. I'll walk you through why that happens and give you a simple way to build in an actual check-in point, so your choices stay choices, not permanent sentences.
If you've ever had to cut something you loved to survive a season of parenting, work, or life, this one's for you.

115 - Career Growth for Moms Who Don't Have Time for Career Growth
Season 2, Episode 115
Show notes
If you're a working mom who hasn't thought about your career in... a while β this episode is for you.
Whether you're starting to wonder what's next, feeling that quiet burn of "is this even worth it anymore," or just want to stop being caught off guard when someone asks where you see yourself in five years, we're talking about those bigger picture career questions that tend to get pushed to the bottom of the list when life is full and you're just trying to keep up. But here's the truth: career growth doesn't stop just because you're also raising kids. You just need a different approach.
In this episode, I'm sharing four simple routines that can help you stay connected to where you're headed professionally, without adding a massive project to your already full plate. We're talking 15 minutes. That's it.
And if you're ready to take this further with real support and a plan, I'm currently accepting 1:1 coaching clients this summer. Head to www.themothernurture.com/work-with-me to learn more.

114 - What No One Tells You About Delegating (And Why It Keeps Not Working)
Season 2, Episode 114
Show notes
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me to "just delegate more," I'd be retired by now. But how do you actually delegate when it's faster to just do it yourself?
That's exactly what I'm digging into in this episode, because delegating has been coming up constantly in coaching sessions lately. The truth is, most of us aren't failing at delegating because we're control freaks. We're failing because no one ever taught us the actual mechanics of it. In this episode, I walk you through the specific steps I give my own coaching clients: how to audit everything you're holding (including all those "quick questions" people keep pinging you with), how to build a process so delegation doesn't create more work for you, and how to start small so you can actually build trust instead of burning it.
If you've ever said "I'll just do it myself", this is for you.
