The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast - Vintage Sci-Fi Short Stories

Fiction, Science Fiction

The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast restores and narrates forgotten and underrated vintage science fiction short stories spanning from the 1700s through the mid-1960s. Each episode features a professionally narrated classic drawn from pioneering speculative fiction and the magazine era that shaped modern science fiction.

Released several times a week, the podcast explores timeless ideas—alien encounters, artificial intelligence, time travel, dystopian futures, and the human cost of progress—through stories by legendary authors including Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, H. G. Wells, Harlan Ellison, and many others.

Now in its fourth year with more than 600 episodes, The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast has reached #1 on Apple Podcasts in 43 countries, reflecting a worldwide appetite for classic science fiction storytelling.

Narrated by Scott Miller, each episode brings the wonders, warnings, and possibilities of vintage science fiction to today’s listeners while celebrating the stories and ideas that helped shape the genre.

  2. The Strange High House in the Mist by H. P. Lovecraft

    Episode 650

    Show notes

Thomas Olney has spent years longing for something beyond the safe, predictable world he knows. When he finally reaches a place where impossible visitors cross the threshold, he may discover that a man can return home without bringing all of himself back. The Strange High House in the Mist by H. P. Lovecraft. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Another 5 star review on Apple Podcasts US, this from sinisteracyd, “Sir you have a great voice and I absolutely devoured these stories.”

Thanks Sinister, we appreciate the review and the 5 stars.

    H. P. Lovecraft achieved little financial success during his lifetime, earning modest payments for stories that would eventually establish him as one of the most influential horror writers in history. His influence extended to numerous other authors who continued to expand the strange fictional universe he created long after his death.

That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Ralph Williams didn’t write a lot of science fiction, but I’ve loved narrating the stories he published between 1940 and 1959. He’s one of those authors who leaves you wishing there were more.

  5. The Ordeal of Colonel Johns by George H. Smith

    Episode 647

    Show notes

A Revolutionary War hero discovers that the America he helped create has become a place he barely recognizes. When his descendants proudly reveal what they stand for, one disgusted soldier may have the power to change everything. The Ordeal of Colonel Johns by George H. Smith. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

George H. Smith made his debut on the podcast a month and a half ago with The Watchers. He is back today with a bit of history.

This wonderfully fun story imagines a scientific invention that can bring historical figures back to life. But when a patriotic organization decides to honor one of its most distinguished ancestors, the celebration doesn’t go quite as planned.

Let’s go back to the year 1954, The New York Giants swept the Cleveland Indians that year to win the World Series. Willie Mays made The “Catch” in game 1 of the series, at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Four years later the New York Giants relocated to San Francisco.

And the June 1954 issue of If World of Science Fiction featured a time travel story on page 84, The Ordeal of Colonel Johns by George H. Smith…

  6. An Artist's Life by Harry Harrison

    Episode 646

    Show notes

Brent Dalgreen traveled to the Moon and nearly died trying to capture its alien beauty on canvas. Now, back on Earth, he discovers another artist has accomplished what he couldn’t—and he’s determined to find out how. An Artist’s Life by Harry Harrison. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Before Harry Harrison became a successful science fiction author, he made his living as a professional artist and illustrator. After serving in the Army Air Force during World War II, Harrison studied art at Hunter College in New York and worked as a commercial illustrator. He also drew comic books, collaborating with legendary comic book artist Wally Wood.

Harrison began publishing science fiction in 1951, so when he wrote today’s tale just two years later, he was drawing on years of firsthand experience as an artist. It’s an interesting connection, especially considering how much of this tale revolves around a painter’s frustration with his own work and his determination to understand another artist’s extraordinary talent.

First published in September 1953, in the third and final issue of Rocket Stories, beginning on page 142, An Artist’s Life by Harry Harrison…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A Revolutionary War hero discovers that the America he helped create has become a place he barely recognizes. Episode 645

    Show notes

Knucklebone Smith has spent his entire life searching for the one thing he was born to do, but nobody believes he’s good for anything. On the frozen surface of Pluto, a desperate emergency may finally give him the chance to prove everyone wrong. The Pluto Lamp by Charles A. Stearns. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

This is the Lost Sci-Fi Podcast debut for author Charles A. Stearns. He published about 25 science fiction short stories between 1953 and 1959.

He also wrote westerns and later had fiction published in The Saturday Evening Post, bringing his total to at least 37 short stories, but he never published a science fiction novel.

In 2023, Wildside Press brought his science fiction tales together in a collection devoted entirely to his work, introducing a new generation of readers to an author whose fiction had largely disappeared from view.

Published in the Fall 1954 issue of Planet Stories magazine on page 56, The Pluto Lamp by Charles A. Stearns…

We’re always searching for science fiction stories that offer something a little out of the ordinary, and today’s story certainly fits the bill.

Blish’s adventure opened the magazine, and today we turn to its final selection. From page 96 of the Fall 1948 issue of Planet Stories, Synthetic Hero by Erik Fennel…

  11. The Protector by Betsy Curtis

    Episode 641

    Show notes

A race that cannot feel physical pain faces surprisingly terrifying danger. When an alien civilization begins to crumble under human cruelty, a boxing manager and his heavyweight champion must confront an enemy who knows exactly how to hurt them. The Protector by Betsy Curtis. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Today, we’re introducing another author to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast for the very first time, Betsy Curtis.

Born Elizabeth Curtis in September, 1917, in Toledo, Ohio, her science fiction writing career began in 1950, when her first published story, Divine Right, appeared in the summer issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.

What’s interesting about Betsy Curtis is that she wasn’t a particularly prolific science fiction author. She’s credited with about 16 published science fiction stories between 1950 and 1973, and she never published a full-length novel.

But she certainly made an impression.

In 1969, her story The Steiger Effect, received a Hugo Award nomination for Best Short Story.

Curtis was also deeply involved in science fiction fandom. She was an accomplished costume designer whose creations won awards at World Science Fiction Convention masquerades. In fact, in 1959, she and her family won a group costume award for their portrayal of non-Euclidean geometry. That’s certainly one of the more unusual costume ideas I’ve come across!

From page 75 of the February 1951 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction The Protector by Betsy Curtis…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, John Stevens has survived something no human being was meant to experience, but the greatest danger may still lie ahead. Show notes

A mysterious blue crystal possesses a power that could change the course of a devastating global war. But turning a deadly discovery into humanity’s last hope will demand more from one young scientist than he ever imagined. The Crystal Ray by Raymond Z. Gallun. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Raymond Z. Gallun returns to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast for just the second time. His first appearance was about a year and a half ago with Return of a Legend, an adventure set on Mars.

Gallun enjoyed a remarkable writing career that spanned more than 60 years, beginning in 1929. During that time, he published more than 100 short stories and became a familiar name to readers of science fiction magazines.

Today’s tale was his very first published work, written when he was just 16 years old. Even at that young age, Gallun had an extraordinary imagination, dreaming up futuristic aircraft, devastating weapons, and scientific discoveries that could change the course of a war.

Nearly a century later, we get to hear where it all began. Published in the fifth of what would become only 11 issues of Air Wonder Stories in November 1929 on page 452, The Crystal Ray by Raymond Z. Gallun…

What’s fascinating about this story is that it was first published in the San Francisco Examiner on April 16, 1899. Ambrose Bierce was writing about intelligent machines more than a century before artificial intelligence became part of everyday conversation.

He was born in Ohio in 1842, fought for the Union during the Civil War, became a famous newspaper columnist and author, earning the nickname “Bitter Bierce” for his sharp wit and often merciless criticism.

There’s another fascinating detail about Bierce himself. In 1913, at the age of 71, he traveled into revolutionary Mexico and disappeared. No one knows for sure what happened to him.

This is the first appearance for author Robert Donald Locke on the podcast. Robert Donald Locke is something of a mystery. We know he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, but remarkably little else about his life has survived. He began publishing science fiction in 1952 and wrote about a dozen short stories and one novel before disappearing from the genre after 1961.

Follow along with us if you have a copy of Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy from May 1953, our story begins on page 92, Milk Run by Robert Donald Locke…
