The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #328 Trey Hensley
Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
My guest this week is the winner of the 2026 IBMA song of the year, 2023 and 2025 IBMA guitarist of the year, and Grammy winning guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, Trey Hensley.
GRAMMY® Award-winning musician and singer/songwriter Trey Hensley—referred to as “Nashville’s hottest young player”
by Acoustic Guitar magazine—was voted the 2023 and 2025 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Guitar Player of the
Year. A multiple GRAMMY® nominee, Hensley received his first GRAMMY® Award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in L.A. on Feb. 2, 2025 as a member of The Taj Mahal Sextet, whose album Swingin’ Live At The Church In Tulsa won in the Best Traditional Blues Album category.
Widely noted for his world class musicianship and guitar prowess, Hensley was invited to perform alongside some of the world’s greatest guitarists at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival 2023 in Los Angeles. That same year, Hensley was a featured player in a piece published by Guitar World magazine titled “6 Blazing Bluegrass Guitarists You Need To Hear.”
Hensley’s other-worldly guitar playing has attracted more than a third of a million followers on social media with rapid growth each day. Hensley has received praise from a truly eclectic group of guitar legends spanning multiple worlds of music who have become vocal fans of his, including legendary Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (who recently referred to Trey as “my favorite guitar player”); Tommy Emmanuel, CGP (who has called Trey “one of my favorite guitarists”); Steve Vai; Neal Schon; Vince Gill; Steve Wariner, CGP; Joe Bonamassa; John Petrucci; John 5; Tom Petty & The
Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell, and many others. Stone Temple Pilots’ Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo invited Trey to perform live with the band at a sold-out 12,000+ amphitheater show in Atlanta in late 2024 and insisted Trey play lead electric guitar on their hit, “Plush,” following a grand intro of Trey to their fans in what must surely have been the only bluegrass jam ever to make an appearance in the middle of an STP set!
His new album “Can’t Out Run the Blue” is stellar and available everywhere now!

The Mandolins and Beer Podcasdt #327 Kylie Kay Anderson
Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
Kylie Kay Anderson was raised in Utah, United States. Her first musical mentor was her dad, who first started teaching her to play the guitar at the age of 9. At 13, Kylie was introduced to the mandolin through her childhood best friend. She took several lessons from her friend, and bluegrass mandolin has been her focus ever since. Through the years, Kylie has been able to earn several awards, including 2012 Utah State Mandolin and 2017 Utah State Flatpick Guitar Champion.
From 2010 to 2013 Kylie studied mandolin (and occasionally the guitar) with guitar master and multi-instrumentalist Jake Workman. During this time, she was kept busy writing music and playing regionally with her youth bluegrass group, Stringshot. After graduating high school, Kylie chose to attend Utah State University and was accepted into the renowned music therapy program there. The curriculum included many courses in music theory, aural skills/ear training, music history, group ensembles, and private guitar instruction. Through these private lessons, Kylie embraced the opportunity to explore guitar styles such as fingerstyle and some jazz and blues.
After spending a few years in the music department at Utah State University, Kylie decided to transfer to East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, where she enrolled in the Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Studies program. These studies provided incredible opportunities to receive instruction from some of the best bluegrass musicians in the business, including Adam Steffey, Wyatt Rice, Sally Sandker, and more. In addition to educational opportunity, Johnson City’s bluegrass scene presented several opportunities to play music all over the Eastern United States.
In 2019 Kylie relocated from East Tennessee to Cork, Ireland, together with her Dutch husband, Owen Schinkel. They spent 3 years there, experiencing Ireland's music culture and performing regularly as “Long Way Home Duo” around the country and at many festivals across Europe. In November 2022, the duo relocated to the Netherlands. In 2024 Kylie completed a Master’s in Arts and Culture from the University of Groningen, which included a research process that gave Kylie a chance to become even more invested in the bluegrass scene in Europe.
In recent years Kylie has been particularly invested in several projects: King Springs Road, (a band first formed in East Tennessee in 2017), No Man’s Land (a cross-European band with an all-female lineup), and Long Way Home Bluegrass Band (the 5-person version of the duo started in Ireland). She also has been busy with various teaching responsibilities, including teaching mandolin in Kathmandu, Nepal with the Bluegrass Journeymen at various points throughout 2026.
In October 2026, Kylie will release her debut album, Crosshaven, a collection of tunes written throughout the past several years.

The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #326 Melody Walker
Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
My guest this week is Grammy Award winning songwriter Melody Walker.
Melody Walker is a GRAMMY-winning songwriter, producer, performer, and fervent believer that songs can change the world. Best known for her writing with Molly Tuttle, Sierra Ferrell, Della Mae and her own band Front Country, Melody’s post-2020 recalibration has found her finally digging into her home of Nashville, TN, co-writing with her talented neighbors and hosting her acclaimed writers’ round, Writers’ Kitchen in East Nashville. Her blend of grassroots pop has won her accolades from Merlefest to Telluride and now the GRAMMYs with three songs on Sierra Ferrell’s GRAMMY-winning album Trail of Flowers, including winner of the Best American Roots Song “American Dreaming” and co-writes on Molly Tuttle’s GRAMMY-winning albums Crooked Tree and City of Gold. Recent years have found Melody releasing her first solo music in a decade, stepping into her own as a songwriter and artist and finding magic in queer collaboration. Whether teaching at music camps or playing Newport Folk Fest and the Kennedy Center with her Grateful Dead drag band BERTHA, Melody is ready to ride whatever cosmic creative waves the universe sends her way.

The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #325 Anthony Howell (2026 National Mandolin Champion)
Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
My guest this week is the 2026 National Mandolin Champion Anthony Howell.
Anthony was born, and raised, near Kosciusko, MS. He originally found an interest in the guitar by growing up watching his dad play. At age 11, Howell began taking music lessons from Alan Sibley, of Alan Sibley & The Magnolia Ramblers. Alan taught him how to play the mandolin, guitar, and banjo and he later taught himself to play the bass.
His musical influences include Jens Kruger of The Kruger Brothers, Charlie Waller, Jimmy Martin, Jesse McReynolds, Bill Emerson, Tony Rice, Tim Stafford, Larry Wallace, Scott Vestal, Jesse Brock, and many more. Anthony takes influence from many areas. He always wanted to be original and not sound like anyone else. Noticing how many musicians today focus on trying to sound like other musicians, Howell felt a need to try to be unique and innovative. He has spent many hours a day writing original music and coming up with new licks and ideas for the banjo.
Anthony is the 4 time consecutive IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist Of Year Nominee, 2023 Walnut Valley National Banjo Champion, 2025 Alabama State Mandolin Champion, 2021 Alabama State Banjo Champion, 2015 Mississippi State Banjo and Guitar Championship, and he also placed 2nd in mandolin that same year. Howell also secured a 1st place victory in the 2026 National Mandolin Champion and 2nd place in the 2026 National Flat Pick Guitar Championship. He is also an accomplished session musician who has worked on 60+ projects in his short, yet successful career.
He spent his early years playing around home with Tyler Carroll & Pineridge and The Bluegrass Cartel. Throughout his career, he has been seen playing on stage with Alan Sibley & The Magnolia Ramblers, Williamson Branch, Edgar Loudermilk Band, Jim Hurst, Micheal Cleveland & Flamekeeper, and in 2025 he made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry stage, playing with Dailey & Vincent. Howell now plays with Seth Mulder & Midnight Run in 2024 playing guitar but he now plays banjo full time in the band and sings.

The Mandolins and Beer Podcsast #324 Sam Parks (The Fretliners)
Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
My guest this week on the podcast is Sam Parks from The Fretliners. The Fretliners are a band carrying the sound of a changing American landscape. Rooted in bluegrass and reaching into Americana, folk, and rock, their music feels weathered by the road and shaped by the people and places that raised them.
Winners of the Telluride and RockyGrass New Artist competitions, they write about real ground: dirt roads and dry creeks, the people who leave and the people who stay.
Their new album came the way the best things always have — not from strategy, but from showing up. A festival campground. A fireside conversation with folk hero. And one thing led to another, the way it does when the connection is real, until the band was making a record with the legendary T Bone Burnett.
The Fretliners are not chasing a revival. They are building something that lasts: honest songs, timeless stories, and a sound that feels like home.
Their brand new album comes out Oct. 26th and you can pre-order it HERE!

Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
My guest this week on the podcast is Scott Marquart. Scott is the founder of String Joy Strings. His story absolutely blows my mind. To start a string company essentially from scratch seems like it would be impossible. Then, he not only accomplishes that, but now he’s even accomplished his dream of getting his strings into Guitar Center. Now, you may not run there to buy a mandolin but if you are on the road and you realize you have no strings for your gig tonight, there is a good chance there is a GC somewhere near you. It’s a big deal. Scott was a great guest and after you listen, I think you’ll understand why he’s been so successful!

The Mandolins and Beer Podcast #311 George Jackson
Season 1
Show notes
Episode Notes
**
My guest this week is George Jackson. George Jackson is a Nashville-based fiddle player and the 2022 IBMA Instrumentalist Of The Year Momentum Award Winner, who performs as a band leader and fiddler for hire with artists such as The Jacob Jolliff Band, Jake Blount, Tall Poppy String Band, The Local Trio, Front Country, Peter Rowan, Missy Raines, Charm City Junction and others. Born in New Zealand, George grew up in a musical family and first heard bluegrass music around the age of 14, immediately falling in love with the style he started trying to work out how to play it from recordings and from mentors in New Zealand. Moving to Australia as a 16-year-old, he won the Australian National Bluegrass Championship on fiddle three times and toured the country with his bluegrass band, "The Company", playing all the major folk festivals on the Australian circuit. As a resident of Nashville and the USA from 2016, George has released three albums of fiddle tunes, "Time and Place" in 2019 and "Hair & Hide" in 2021 and most recently “George Jackson’s Local Trio” with Eli Broxham and Frank Evans in 2023. He was awarded first place in the Mike Auldridge tune composition award by the DC bluegrass union in both 2019 and 2021 for his tunes "Chapel Hill Deer Stalk" and "Neighbor Mike" respectively. He also sparked a viral fiddle tune frenzy with his composition "Dorrigo", when hundreds of musicians learned the tune and posted videos of themselves playing it online, becoming known as the "#dorrigochallenge". In his free time, George loves to watch Star Trek and cook food at home, with recent obsessions in Italian and Cajun fare. He loves Swedish fiddle music and —fun fact— he was a competitive Highland dancer until the age of 21.
