634 Have a Good Life!
Show notes
This week I'm talking about the Panic Attack video. Darren Doane and I put it together and we shot the whole thing in one day around Bremerton. It's all DIY, it's all real. The Pokinatcha Punk has taken over my life, so he's in there too. I also tell the story of getting pulled over by the cops while we were larping like cops for the Rolling Strong video. The donuts we had for a prop got us off the hook.
Then I get to your voicemails. Somebody asked about skate demos, and I got a great story about that. I met Steve Caballero at Northgate Mall when I was a kid and missed a Social Distortion show at a skate demo that same night. I still wish I'd seen that show. Somebody else wanted songwriting tips, so I get into how I write. Writing songs is like putting together a puzzle. A guy who heard Panic Attack on KEXP asked if the Tumbledown song Moving On is a cover. It's not, I wrote it, and I tell you why I write places into my songs. The Rockies line in Let's Ride came from Dumb and Dumber. A classic.
I also talk about slamming my fingers in a tour bus door in Canada and why I play bass with a pick now, how I pick the colors for my signature basses and the show Dark Matter is on my watching now list and why it connects to everything. Appreciate you all.

623 Si Short - The Jack Knives
Show notes
Si Short from the Jack Knives is my guest this week. He grew up in England, moved to the States at 22, and now lives in Southern California. He took 10 years off from bands, started writing again in Hawaii, and the Jack Knives grew out of Thursday night jams into a fully independent band playing House of Blues and the Fillmore.
We get into building a following brick by brick instead of buying followers, what streaming data tells you about where to play, why live streams reach a totally different audience, and how the band balances tours with day jobs and families. Si also explains why he pushes the band to promote a record for a year instead of three months, and tells the story of getting his bass player turned away at the Canadian border before a Vancouver show.
The new Jack Knives album, Negative Spaces, is out November 6 on Fumie Records, produced by Pete Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls. This fall they play shows with Dave Hause and The Mermaid, headline dates in Germany, Austria and England, and a run with the Bouncing Souls, the Flatliners and Suicide Machines. Bill Stevenson is on the show. He's the drummer for legendary punk bands Descendents and ALL, he also played in Black Flag, and he produced our first live album, MxPx - At the Show. Bill, Miles, and Snodgrass are out this August, running from Indianapolis and Chicago up to Tillsonburg, Ontario for a full ALL set at Buddies Fest, then Detroit. Descendents tour this fall with Social Distortion and the Chats.

620 The Dwarves | Blag Dahlia
Episode 620
Show notes
Blag Dahlia returns for his third time on the podcast. The Dwarves have a new album out called Jenkem, and Blag explains exactly what the title refers to, which I immediately regret.
From there we run through the worst heat wave in European history, arguing about flat earth with your own bass player, the Stray Cats and the clean rockabilly problem, why image decided which punk bands got big and which didn't, AI and where an artist draws the line, and the difference between a person and the role he plays on stage. Yeah, it's a lot.

617 The Happy Birthday Episode
Show notes
Happy birthday to MxPx! But age doesn't matter unless you're a cheese or so they say. Mike marks it by telling the full story of how the band got started in 1992: a rented Flying V, a garage-sale snare drum, and a drummer who'd barely played before their first practice. One week later, MxPx played their first show ever, a backyard barbecue, and played the whole set twice in one day. Mike also answers a longtime fan question about the real story behind "Wrecking Hotel Rooms," co-written with Mark Hoppus. Your voicemails and news on the upcoming album Living in the Chaos.
