Is pharma measuring media against the wrong metrics?
Show notes
The 2026 MM+M Media Summit will take place on Thursday here in New York, providing us an opportunity to check in with stakeholders from across the extensive health media landscape.
Over the course of our daylong programming, we get updates on the state of play, what strategies and channels are working best for pharma brands and where there is uncertainty or room for improvement.
Attendees will also get to hear from opening and closing keynotes featuring entertainment and social giants Disney and Meta, respectively.
In advance of the Media Summit, executive editor Jack O’Brien is joined by a veteran of health media in all its various forms and incarnations: Underscore Marketing CEO Lauren Boyer.
Boyer, a 2023 Women of Distinction honoree, is on the show to talk about what pharma marketers should actually be measuring as they prepare for a launch. The checklist is extensive, but manageable and keeps drugmakers from measuring their media strategies against imprecise metrics.
Boyer also previews what her agency has up its sleeve heading into its 20th anniversary next year.
Then, during Phase 3, we go medical marketing trick or treating.

You can’t bolt on the future: How AI-native agencies are built differently from the start, a podcast sponsored by The Considered+AI and CG Life Bonus
Show notes
The next era of healthcare marketing isn’t on the horizon — it’s already here. Science is advancing, AI is expanding what teams can create and accomplish and clients are under growing pressure to deliver greater impact, faster.
CG Life CEO David Ormesher and The Considered+AI founder Dave Hunt join MM+M to take listeners behind the curtain of the next generation of the agency model. Drawing on what they’ve learned from building and working differently, they’ll explore what’s proving successful, what the industry conversation about AI may be missing and what it really takes to move beyond experimentation to change how teams think, create and deliver for clients.
Fresh off bringing together two growing agencies, they’ll discuss why this moment calls for a different kind of agency: Nimble enough to keep moving, built around great talent and designed to embrace AI as a cultural and creative opportunity — not simply another technology or platform.

Introducing The Refill by MM+M
Show notes
Hello and welcome to The Refill by MM+M!
We’re making some long overdue updates to the podcast.
First, it has a new name. Second, it has new cover art, courtesy of our dynamic design duo of Sean Ayling and David Lee. Third, it has new sonic branding from our musically-inclined producer Bill Fitzpatrick.
Finally, perhaps most importantly, we have a new multimedia studio in our New York office, which you’ll get to see a lot more of in interview clips posted on our social media accounts.
Otherwise, the high level of audio journalism content remains the same. There will be some other changes to the show as we plan on experimenting with different formats, but you can always expect an episode in your podcast feed every Wednesday morning.
Please like, rate and review us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Also, subscribe to our YouTube channel: @MMM-online and follow us on TikTok, Instagram, X and LinkedIn.
We hope you enjoy our debut episode featuring Omnicom Health CEO Dana Maiman in conversation with editorial director Jameson Fleming.
After that interview, we’ll bring you to our revamped Trends segment, which will now be known as “Phase 3.” Think of it as a late-stage deep dive into a specific topic of interest to medical marketing.
This week, we’re talking about MAHA and the midterms.

Noom reminds us weight regain doesn't care. Plus, we reflect on five years since Dopesick was released.
Show notes
If you’re watching TV, you’re seeing Noom’s ads.
Nestled between Keke Palmer dancing in support of Verizon’s phone plans and the unsettling omnipresence of Liberty Biberty are the weight loss company’s ads featuring chief wellness ambassador Rebel Wilson.
The Pitch Perfect star has long been a partner to the brand and a star in its bubbly advertising, which blankets linear TV, especially during live sports broadcasts.
But now Noom has released another GLP-1-focused ad with a haunting hook just in time for Halloween.
As an outgrowth of its Losing for Keeps campaign, Noom recently released a 30-second PSA-style ad titled “Weight Regain Doesn't Care.”
It’s a cheeky spot certain to get major play throughout the next month, which is why we have Noom CEO Geoff Cook back on the show this week.
In conversation with executive editor Jack O’Brien, Cook discusses “Weight Regain Doesn’t Care,” the impact of the broader Losing for Keeps effort, the role of celebs in GLP-1 marketing and what other examples of GLP-1 advertising have impressed him.
Then, during Trends, we reflect on the five-year anniversary since Dopesick was released and medical marketing’s ignominious legacy fueling the opioid epidemic.

Why medical affairs is the next frontier for pharma brands
Show notes
MM+M stands for “Medical, Marketing and Media,” representing the primary pillars of our coverage. But maybe there’s room for a fourth pillar, or at least a tweak to the first one: “Medical Affairs.”
Today’s episode is going to delve into medical affairs, which have risen in prominence over the past decade to become a key function for drugmakers and their agency partners. As today’s guests will discuss in greater detail, medical affairs is at the center of the venn diagram between R&D and commercial teams
I’m pleased to be joined by Renu Juneja, ADPAL president and former medical affairs lead at Johnson & Johnson, as well as my fellow Haymarket Media colleague Tammy Chernin, SVP of strategic and scientific services at PRI Healthcare Solutions.
These two walk us through where medical affairs stands in 2026, why pharma companies are increasingly prioritizing it for their business and where there is room for improvement as its profile continues to ascend.
As for Trends, I’ll be joined by editor-at-large Steve Madden and reporter Bella Czajkowski to talk about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including newly launched initiatives, reupped ad campaigns as well as the evolving narrative around cancer care.

Previewing the 2026 MM+M Awards with Jury Chair Jen Clifford of AstraZeneca
Show notes
The biggest night in medical marketing returns on Thursday.
The 2026 MM+M Awardswill take place at Cipriani Wall Street on October 1, and honestly, it will probably be the biggest night in the 60-year history of MM+M when it’s all said and done.
We’re set to bestow honors for the top ad campaigns and educational initiatives, for the lead agencies by category as well as for a pair of leaders who have spent decades of their respective careers pushing medical marketing forward.
The centerpiece of the night will also be remarks delivered by Platinum Award honoree Gabrielle Union, a partner of Bayer, Knix and Clearblue alongside her out-loud advocacy about living with adenomyosis, menopausal, perimenopausal and mental health challenges.
There’s so much exciting stuff in the works and executive editor Jack O’Brien is joined by this week’s guest, 2026 MM+M Awards jury chair Jen Clifford of AstraZeneca.
Jen is here not only to preview our big night of glitz and glam, but also to discuss overseeing the judging process for the awards and offer best practices for how to most effectively nominate work for the 2027 MM+M Awards.
Following that conversation, I’m joined by pharma editor Lecia Bushak and reporter Bella Czajkowski to talk about the throughline from a few pharma ads of the post-Untitled Letter era, featuring appearances by Ardelyx, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly.

The end of awareness: A new definition of success in the age of AI, a podcast sponsored by Syneos Health Communications Bonus
Show notes
Brand awareness has long served as a measure of marketing success. But as AI increasingly shapes how people discover, understand and evaluate healthcare brands, awareness no longer tells the full story. In this episode, industry leaders from Syneos Health, Joe Daley and Matthew Snodgrass, introduce a new definition of success centered on the “framing gap” — the distance between how a brand defines itself and how AI describes it. They examine why visibility does not always translate into recommendation, how AI determines which sources and narratives to trust, and why strong brand foundations matter more than ever. The conversation offers a practical approach to building clear, consistent brand meaning that AI can accurately retrieve, reinforce and share at scale.

Your data called. It wants a better job., a podcast sponsored by OptimizeRx Bonus
Show notes
Pharma marketers have spent years using data to optimize individual campaign performance. But what happens when that data starts making your entire marketing system smarter? In this conversation with OptimizeRx chief AI officer and podcast host Mike Rousselle, we explore how behavioral and clinical signals can power a continuous learning loop — predicting opportunities, informing activation, measuring what happens next and feeding those outcomes back into the system. The result is marketing that doesn’t start from scratch with every campaign, but gets more intelligent with every turn of the flywheel.

Spotlighting sickle cell disparities and rebranding Novo Nordisk to ‘Novo’
Show notes
Sickle cell disease has long been a frustrating medical condition impacting a historically overlooked patient population, but now there is something of a medical miracle treatment available.
If only it were that simple.
An estimated 100,000 Americans live with sickle cell disease, which disproportionately affects people of African descent. Roughly one in every 365 Black births in the U.S. is affected.
In recognition of National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, Dr. Alana Arnold, a pediatric emergency physician and healthcare executive, and Akinwole Garrett, CEO of BlackDoctor, are on the podcast to discuss the systemic changes needed to improve patient outcomes.
Editor-at-large Steve Madden helms a dual interview exploring the latest advancements in sickle cell disease treatment – namely the breakthrough CRISPR therapy Casgevy – as well as what has kept a medical miracle trapped behind systemic barriers.
Arnold and Garrett hone in on the challenges of healthcare disparities and the systemic changes needed to improve outcomes in this particular patient community.
For Trends, Madden and executive editor Jack O’Brien talk with reporter Bella Czajkowski about Novo Nordisk’s rebrand to “Novo” and how the Danish pharma giant can make the most of this moment for a cultural reset.

Former NFL star Kyle Long guards his mental health as part of J&J's Generation Fine
Episode 483
Show notes
The NFL season has kicked off, renewing focus on America’s most popular sport.
While millions of people are eagerly tuning into the action on the gridiron, Johnson & Johnson is trying to focus some of that energy on people living with anxiety and depression.
In May, the pharma giant launched Generation Fine, an initiative to normalize conversations regarding mental health, with a specific emphasis on major depressive disorder.
If there’s no crying in baseball, there’s even less in football – a sport defined by grit, toughness, never showing weakness and battling through constant, agonizing pain.
That’s why J&J drafted Kyle Long, former NFL star and CBS Sports analyst, to dispel these longstanding misconceptions and encourage patients to get the behavioral care they need.
Long, who has been public with his lifelong battles with anxiety and depression for more than a decade, joins executive editor Jack O’Brien for a special episode of the podcast to discuss his own patient journey, how he got involved in Generation Fine and what health brands to continue to improve the dialogue around mental health in America.

The most interesting man in medical marketing
Show notes
September 9, 2025 will go down as one of the most impactful days in the history of medical marketing.
After months of saber rattling, the Trump administration announced that the FDA would crack down on DTC pharma ads on linear TV and social media.
Yet September 9, 2025 wasn’t the apocalypse for medical marketing.
Sure, there were days that turned into weeks of general unease and worry across the industry, but this is a resilient bunch.
By the time we started conducting interviews with medical marketing shops for the 2026 Agency 100, most had gotten a handle on the situation and were baking in these challenges to their media plans and broader business strategies.
Following editor-at-large Steve Madden’s feature interview with industry veteran Ritesh Patel, we’re looking back on the past 365 days.
To mark the one-year anniversary of the start of the FDA’s pharma ad crackdown, executive editor Jack O’Brien joined by reporter Bella Czajkowski and pharma editor Lecia Bushak to talk about how the heightened regulatory focus has impacted pharma brands and their agency partners.
Lecia also recently caught up with 4A’s Health Executive Director Jim Potter about what has changed since the crackdown began and where things go from here for the medical marketing community. You’ll get to hear some of his insights during the course of our conversation on then, now and what comes next.

In this conversation, Ehler offers advice for healthcare companies and medical marketing agencies seeking to create the best workplaces.
Reminder: all Best Places to Work survey responses must be finalized and submitted by September 11 at 11:59 p.m. ET. No extensions will be granted.

What to expect at 2026 CMI Agility in Philadelphia
Show notes
Heading into Labor Day weekend, we’ve got a jumbo-packed two-fer episode, with both conversations centering around the number four.
First up is an interview with CMI Media Group CEO and2026 MM+M Woman of Distinction honoree Susan Dorfman as she previews the fourth edition of the CMI Agility conference in Philadelphia.
Held on Monday, September 14, Agility serves as the Agency 100 honoree’s opportunity to urge the healthcare industry to move beyond simply focusing on "patient journey" and embrace more human-centered care.
Susan is also joined by Mick Ebeling, founder of Not Impossible Labs, who is returning as a keynote speaker for the thought leadership summit. Ebeling is an out of the box thinker with a style that challenges many medical marketing conventions.
I think you’ll really enjoy hearing from him in conjunction with Susan’s updates on the WPP subsidiary as it heads into the final quarter of 2026.
And in lieu of our Trends segment, we’re joined by Chris Fox, VP of marketing at Cleveland Diagnostics.
Chris is on to discuss the return of the company’s PSA on PSA campaign for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, why it’s critical to keep dismantling long-held stigmas surrounding prostate cancer care and survivorship, as well as how much that Novartis Super Bowl ad helped advance the cause of PSA screening.

Regeneron’s immersive AV experience reimagines complex science communications
Show notes
Science is, in a word, complicated.
Fortunately, there’s a drugmaker out there utilizing immersive audio and visual elements to break down some pretty heady concepts in a digestible, yet engaging way.
Earlier this month, Regeneron debuted Science Illuminated, which is now available on Spotify.
The series is borne out of the work the New York-based drugmaker has undertaken across a range of therapies, with audio narration and scientific imagery produced by the company’s employees.
Reporter Bella Czajkowski brings us a conversation with Regeneron's head of research communications Ella Campbell about Science Illuminated, including the drugmaker’s reasoning for producing the series, how it was developed and what the company learned from experimenting with new approaches to science communication.
For our Trends segment, executive editor Jack O’Brien is joined by Bella and pharma editor Lecia Bushak for thoughts about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to publicly document freezing her eggs, the backlash to it as well as how this is a watershed moment for discussions around fertility treatments in America.

Ellis Verdi on hospital marketing, Hillary's 2000 campaign and tropical fish
Show notes
Few things in life carry as much vintage prestige as the presence of a real New York adman.
That rarified air is typically reserved for the likes of a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue, a 1957 Chevy or a Patek Philippe watch.
Ellis Verdi is a classic New York adman with more than a few dozen stories to tell. Ellis worked across various brands and ad agencies in the 1970s and 80s before founding his own firm, DeVito/Verdi, in the latter part of the decade.
Known for its at-times irreverent, at-times provocative creative output, DeVito/Verdi has endured as a New York-based institution throughout the years and even appeared on the MM+M Agency 100 list.
From a medical marketing standpoint, Ellis has worked with a number of prominent hospital and health system clients, which scratches my itch after having covered the provider sector earlier in my career.
Over nearly 40 years, DeVito/Verdi has worked with Mount Sinai, Lenox Hill Hospital, Mass General, UChicago Medicine, VCU Health, BayCare and MetroHealth in Cleveland.
Ellis also has tales from the halls of the White House after the agency pitched and won the right to provide ad support for former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s senate campaign in 2000.
It’s our 60th anniversary year, so who better to have in the studio than an industry legend like Ellis for a longform, wide-ranging interview.
