RWR ECW Podcast Ep. 19 (8/17/93) Stan Hansen is Here!
Show notes
***WATCHALONG W/BRANDON & GENE AT THE LINK BELOW***
https://rumble.com/v7hr9lu-rwr-ecw-podcast-ep.-19-81793-stan-hansen-is-here.htmlFresh footage has finally arrived and ECW immediately rewards Gene Jackson and Brandon Wheeler with a Tag Team Title tournament, a coin toss finish, and Stan Hansen trying to tear Freddie Gilbert’s pants off.
This week, the tournament to crown new ECW Tag Team Champions gets underway with the Headhunters battling Ivan and Vladimir Koloff, while the Sandman and Sal Bellomo form one of the strangest teams imaginable against Tony Stetson and Sir Richard Michaels.
Elsewhere, Don Muraco defends the ECW Heavyweight Title, Tito Santana is announced as his next challenger, Ultra Clash continues to take shape, and Eddie Gilbert decides Jay Sulli can be replaced by literally the first person he finds (John Gillam’s ECW debut).
But the real attraction is Stan Hansen vs. Jimmy Snuka, a wild, physical mess that gives this episode the kind of energy ECW has badly needed for quite a while now.
It’s still rough around the edges, the finishes still make Gene and Brandon roll their eyes, but for the first time in a while….ECW feels like it’s heading somewhere.

RWR Power Pro Wrestling Podcast Ep. 29 (10/31/98) HALLOWEEN SPECIAL
Show notes
It’s Halloween in Memphis, and Power Pro Wrestling has completely lost its mind.
Gene Jackson, Robb Helt, and Brian Tramel head back to October 31, 1998 for the infamous Masquerade Maul, where everybody on the show is wrestling in a costume including Batman, Catwoman, Popeye, Spiderman, Gene Simmons, a killer clown who definitely isn’t “Doink”, a Snowman who definitely isn’t Eddie Crawford, Leatherface, and more.
Some of the costumes work. Some absolutely don’t. And by the time Brian Christopher is trying to wrestle while keeping a giant Popeye head attached to his body, the whole thing starts feeling less like wrestling show and more like a nyquil induced fever dream. There is at least a little actual storyline progression mixed into the madness, including Randy Hales getting tarred and feathered by Spiderman who makes a pretty memorable entrance from the atop a dumpster.
But mostly?
This is one of the strangest hours of Power Pro Wrestling we’ve watched yet, that seems to be heavier on TRICKS than it is TREATS.
Happy Halloween!

Beyond Wrestling Ep.14: Zerrick McGaughy a.k.a. Z-Dogg
Show notes
***WATCH THE VIDEO VERSION AT THIS LINK***
https://rumble.com/v7h8oh2-beyond-wrestling-ep.14-zerrick-mcgaughy-a.k.a.-z-dogg.htmlThis week on Beyond Wrestling, Robb Helt sits down with Memphis media personality, rapper, filmmaker, podcaster, and all-around creative force Zerrick McGaughy, perhaps better known as Z-Dogg.
Zerrick talks about growing up in Memphis, getting his start in rap during the early ’90s, reinventing himself through social media, filmmaking, and podcasting, and why he believes being willing to hit the “reset button” on himself is one of the biggest reasons he’s still relevant and creating more than 30 years later. They also get into his Giving Out Free Game podcast, clips from Bet You Don’t Know, independent films, Memphis culture, using social media as a tool, and why your personality is the most valuable thing you have that most people don’t use.
Then things take a turn.
Zerrick steps out and his brother Hot Tamale shows up to discuss the Burn ’Em Up Podcast, his run ins with Memphis wrestlers past and present, his alleged wrestling accomplishments, his stolen championship belt, his plans to become wrestling’s first “entertainment trainer,” and why he thinks today’s wrestlers need to worry less about moves and spots in the ring and more about getting people to actually care what they’re doing.
It’s Memphis music, wrestling, movies, podcasting, social media, and a whole lot of Hot Tamale chaos, exactly the kind of conversation Beyond Wrestling was made for.

Retro Wrestling with Gene Jackson: Ep. 66 (Deep Dive) The Gangstas in Smoky Mountain Wrestling
Show notes
Before New Jack became one of the most controversial figures in ECW, he and Mustafa Saed spent nearly a year turning Smoky Mountain Wrestling upside down.
In this deep dive, Gene Jackson goes back through the entire Gangstas run in SMW from their explosive debut and instantly controversial promos to their war with the Rock ’n’ Roll Express, their run with the Tag Team Titles, and the unlikely chain of events that eventually had Jim Cornette standing alongside Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson.
Along the way, we look at how real world racial tension was deliberately worked into the presentation, why the Gangstas generated heat that went far beyond normal wrestling boos, how New Jack developed as a promo and performer, and where some of the stories told about this run over the years have been exaggerated, misunderstood, or flat out wrong.
We’ll also follow the story through the Armstrong Coalition, the return of the Heavenly Bodies, major cards involving Terry Funk and The Undertaker, and the point where the Gangstas’ Smoky Mountain run came to an end.
It’s one of the most controversial, dangerous, and fascinating angles of the 1990s and the chapter that helped create the New Jack the wrestling world would never forget.

RWR USWA Podcast Ep. 125 (3/7/92) Bed Pans, Brass Knuckles, & Babyface Kamala!
Show notes
Things are getting downright weird in Memphis and yes, we know that’s saying something.
The Retro Wrestling Gang head back to March 7, 1992, where Brian Christopher is rapidly turning into the cocky heel we all remember, while the now yet wicked kid, Tony Williams decides he’s had enough of Brian’s ego, and the Texas Heavyweight Title suddenly becomes very personal.
Meanwhile, Nurse Cratchit is still dealing out concussions with that bed pan, adding Miss Texas to her growing list of “patients”, and Dr. Tom Prichard’s Southern Heavyweight Title and revolving championship belt situation somehow gets even more confusing.
But the biggest surprise comes when the Kamala/Kimala/Whatever turns babyface and sends the Moondogs running for their lives. Yes, those Moondogs. The same ones who have spent weeks destroying everybody and everything in sight suddenly want no part of the Ugandan Giant.
Add in Eric Embry and Pat Tanaka fighting over a Brass Knuckles trophy that actually has brass knuckles attached to it or at least used to, Lauren Davenport continuing her mysterious scouting mission that no one cares about, and Richard Lee preparing to actually get into the ring himself, and you’ve got another wonderfully chaotic week of 1992 USWA television.
Memphis wrestling: where a bedpan can be a finishing move and Kamala can become a beloved babyface for beating up a couple of “dogs” with an actual DOOR!

RWR ECW Podcast Ep. 18 (8/10/93) DON’T PRESS PLAY!!
Show notes
***DON'T CLICK THIS LINK! DON'T WATCH THIS WITH BRANDON & GENE***
https://rumble.com/v7heh0k-rwr-ecw-podcast-ep.-18-81093-dont-press-play.htmlIf you’re following along with Brandon and Gene watching all the ECW episodes from the beginning, they have a suggestion….skip this episode. Seriously, the ECW episode, this podcast episode…skip it…. and come back next week.
Oh, so you’re still here? Ok then, keep reading…..
Episode #18 brings us another round of recycled footage, repeated angles, reptitive Ultra Clash hype, and enough so-called “best of” material to make you almost beg to see the “worst of” just for something different.
There are at least a few things worth talking about this week, including Eddie Gilbert and Jay Sulli arguing over Hot Stuff International versus the Dangerous Alliance, more build toward Ultra Clash, Shane Douglas’ “$10,000 Golden Challenge” against the Sandman, and Eddie promising to unleash Abdullah the Butcher on Stan Hansen and Terry Funk (and everyone in the ECW Arena!)
But make no mistake: this is ECW running on fumes. Some of this stuff is being shown for the fourth or fifth time at this point, how in the f*** have we managed to completely run out of footage to air three weeks before the next television taping??
So Gene and Brandon do what they can to try and have an entertaining show, for the sake of not messing up the episode count. They make fun of the production, question nearly every booking decision, revisit footage they’ve already seen multiple times, and repeatedly assure listeners that next week has to be better. It has to be. Right? Right??
Seriously, don’t press play on this episode! You’ve been warned! If you press play on this episode, don’t come crying to us that it sucks because we already told you it sucks. (Ah hell, if you made it through those first eight weeks of ECW and this podcast, you’re HARDCORE! Heck, you might even end up being EXTREME! So, go ahead, be a man, press that play button……WE DARE YOU!!!

RWR Continental Wrestling Podcast Ep. 16: Mixed Tag Team Mayhem!
Show notes
***WATCHALONG AT THE LINK BELOW***
https://rumble.com/v7h2cx2-rwr-continental-wrestling-podcast-ep.-16-mixed-tag-team-mayhem.htmlGene Jackson and Robb Helt close out 1985 Continental Championship Wrestling with a show that feels like a pretty fitting snapshot of everything that has made this run so much fun to revisit.
This week, The Bullet and Brad Armstrong are back in action as the war with Robert Fuller and the Stud Stable continues to build, while the U.S. Junior Heavyweight Championship is on the line with Roy Lee Welch defending against “Gentleman” Ken Timbs (or as they call him in Mexico, “El Fabuloso Blondy”!)
The show also features Tommy & Johnny Rich, more from the Nightmares, and one of the most entertaining matches we’ve watched so far in this project as Adrian Street & Miss Linda collide with Norvell Austin & Candy Divine in a mixed tag that gets a whole lot more heated than you might expect.
With no December footage available, this serves as our final stop in 1985 before the podcast moves into 1986 and based on where the pieces are starting to fall, things are about to get even more interesting.
It’s another laid back trip through the territory with Gene and Robb, revisiting the matches, personalities, angles, and little details that made Continental Wrestling such a unique part of the Southern wrestling landscape.

Beyond Wrestling Ep.13 w/ Elijah James Dobbs a.k.a. Sleazy-E of Natural State Rasslin’
Show notes
This week on Beyond Wrestling, Robb Helt heads to Arkansas to talk with Elijah James Dobbs, better known in wrestling (squared) circles as Sleazy-E, the founder of Natural State Rasslin’.
What started with no-ring fights, backyard brawls, and a willingness to try something different has grown into a promotion that now runs festivals, benefit shows, library events, family friendly cards, and full blown deathmatch tournaments across Arkansas.
Elijah talks about growing up in Newport, getting hooked on wrestling as a kid, filming matches before he was old enough to train, and eventually building Natural State Rasslin’ into something that reflects both sides of his wrestling personality: the wild, violent stuff and the community driven side that raises money, brings people together, and gives local wrestlers a platform.
There’s also plenty of talk about Memphis wrestling’s influence, the realities of running an independent promotion, dealing with egos, building an audience from scratch, and why sometimes the biggest obstacle in wrestling is wrestling itself.
It’s a conversation about blood, business, community, and building something your own way.

Talkin’ Off The Top Rope #11: “The Podfather” Trey Mack
Show notes
This week, “The Grizzled Vet” Michael McCurdy sits down with a man who didn’t just become part of his podcasting story, he helped push him into the world of video podcasting in the first place.
“The Podfather” Trey Mack looks back on growing up in Texas, becoming a wrestling fan, attending WrestleMania IX, getting his first real taste of the business, and learning some very painful lessons after discovering that professional wrestling wasn’t nearly as “fake” as people liked to say.
The conversation also dives into Trey’s family history in the music business, his own wrestling career, the birth of the Offshoots Network and Offshoots TV, how the “Podfather” name came about, and the evolution from wrestling podcasts into a much broader creative outlet.
There are plenty of old stories, a few detours into football and pop culture, and even the story of how Michael once got bombarded with messages asking why he supposedly hated the Von Erichs.
More than anything, it’s a conversation about following your own path, staying creative, and finding new ways to tell stories, even when that path takes a few strange turns along the way.

RWR USWA Podcast Ep. 124 (2/29/92) The Fat Boys Arrive!
Show notes
The Fat Boys have arrived in Memphis, Koko B. Ware is finally the Unified World Heavyweight Champion, and somehow the Moondogs are still finding new pieces of furniture to destroy.
Gene Jackson, Josh Briley, and Brian Tramel head back to February 29, 1992, where Meat & Potatoes make one hell of a first impression and immediately start calling out Richard Lee’s Moondogs. Meanwhile, Brian Christopher’s ego keeps growing while taking on Jim Steel, King Cobra wants to knock him down a few pegs, and a mysterious woman is sitting at ringside taking notes on seemingly everybody.
Things get even stranger when “Dr. Death” (NOT Steve Williams) and Nurse Kratchet show up with a bedpan cutting nonsense promos on Dave Brown, Pat Tanaka nearly kicks Eric Embry’s eyeball into the cheap seats, and the Moondogs respond to Big Black Dog’s injury by trying to cripple somebody who had absolutely nothing to do with it.
And looming over everything is Night of Champions featuring six title matches, no-disqualification chaos, and Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett finally realizing that beating up the Moondogs isn’t enough.
They’ve burned people, broken bones, smashed chairs, wrecked furniture, and turned the studio into a demolition site.
Now they want the belts!

https://rumble.com/v7h30ik-rwr-ecw-podcast-ep.-17-8393-w.i.n.g.-ing-it-this-week.htmlECW is running out of fresh footage, “Jazzy” J.T. Smith being tossed off the crow’s nest is airing again, and somehow Japanese deathmatch wrestling has entered the conversation in 1993.
Gene Jackson and Brandon Wheeler head back to August 3, 1993, where the Dark Patriot continues his feud with the apparently, “Jazzy” J.T. Smith, Eddie Gilbert and Paul E. Dangerously remain right in the middle of everything, and ECW desperately hypes the upcoming August TV tapings featuring names like Stan Hansen, Tito Santana, Sensational Sherri, Shane Douglas, Don Muraco, Jimmy Snuka, and stars from the WING promotion from Japan.
There’s also more recycled footage, more baffling continuity, and a look at the kind of wild Japanese wrestling that clearly points toward where ECW would eventually be heading.
The good news? Fresh tapings are finally coming and not a moment too soon!
