    Season 1, Episode 94

    Show notes

Today I had the pleasure of chatting to Canberra horticulturalist Skye Macleod. With a great passion for native plants, animals and nature at large, Skye brings a passion and youthful enthusiasm to the subjects we need to be paying more attention to.

She shared about her experiences working as a consultant across commercial and private property gardens. We discussed the importance of making these spaces habitat and environment for our local fauna.

I'm sure you will get a lot out of this conversation!

  3. #92 - Home Soil Can Be Very Productive Soil | Rachael & Damian [Home Soil]

    Season 1, Episode 92

    Show notes

What a pleasure to be joined by Rachael & Damian of Home Soil in Canberra, Australia.

This hard working duo have completely transformed the soil around their homestead to be incredibly productive and healthy gardens!

We explore some of the key influences shaping their approach to gardening, from Charles Dowding’s emphasis on minimising soil disturbance and making vegetable growing accessible, to Elaine Ingham’s work around root exudates, plant succession and soil compaction, and Dan Kittredge’s perspective on caring for soil microbes by providing them with food, water and protection.

We also reflect on the importance of combining scientific understanding with observation and a deeper connection to the garden, while recognising the First Nations knowledge and understandings that have informed many of the ideas we continue to explore.

Looking ahead, there’s a growing interest in seed saving, cool-climate syntropic agroforestry and continuing to learn through practice. In March, they’ll also have the opportunity to attend a two-week, on-site Permaculture Design Course hosted by David Holmgren, adding another exciting chapter to their ongoing learning journey.

  4. #91 - How We Can Truly Live On Land | Andrew Cameron [Life and Land]

    Season 1, Episode 91

    Show notes

In this episode I sit down with Andrew Cameron from Life & Land to talk about working with nature and what it actually means to steward the land in which we find ourselves while balancing that with our goals and lifestyle.

We get into soil, plants, observation and some of the bigger ideas around how we can work with natural systems rather than constantly trying to control them.

I really loved Andrew's take on the situation in the northern rivers and how that can help us to understand other parts of our food and living systems in this country more broadly.

  6. #89 - Natural Intelligence Farming | Matthew Haggerty [Prospect Pastural]

    Season 1, Episode 89

    Show notes

In this episode of The Shed Organics Show, I sit down with Matt Haggerty from Prospect Pastural & Natural Intelligence Farming to explore what happens when we stop trying to control nature and start paying closer attention to the intelligence already built into living systems.

We talk about soil, plants, microbes, grazing, observation and the relationships that connect them all, as well as the ways modern agriculture can sometimes overlook the incredible complexity of the ecosystems we’re working within.

Matt shares his perspective on Natural Intelligence Farming, what he has learned from observing these systems in practice, and why developing the ability to read the landscape may be just as important as the techniques we use to manage it.

There’s plenty in here for anyone interested in regenerative agriculture, living soil, ecological farming or simply understanding the natural world a little better.

    Season 1, Episode 88

    Show notes

This week we have the lead citizen mycologist from the organisation 'We Forest Earth' Pierre here to share his stories and insights! This mans knowledge is incredible and I am super grateful to have had the chance to sit down with him.

We spoke about how he is leading the charge in a new way of regnerating bushland. Not only one that takes out the woody weed species like camphor laurel that have taken over landscapes... but also providing a viable food or medicine crop from the resulting decomposing material.

  8. #87 - Making Mushroom Growing Easy | Liam Kleyn [Grolia]

    Season 1, Episode 87

    Show notes

In this episode, I’m joined by Liam Kleyn from Grolia, to talk about something that sounds simple in theory but can be surprisingly difficult in practice: growing mushrooms at home.

We talk about why mushroom growing can be so frustrating for the average person, what Liam saw as the opportunity to make the process much simpler, and the thinking behind the new 'Flush' machine Grolia has developed to bring mushroom growing into the home.

But there’s a lot more to it than just designing a machine. Liam takes me through the process of developing the idea, building prototypes, manufacturing it, and figuring out how to make something practical, functional and good enough to actually sit in someone’s kitchen.

It’s a really interesting look at what happens when you take something that has traditionally been a little complicated and try to redesign the entire experience around making it accessible to everyday people.

  11. #84 - How Natural Farming Empowers People | Chris Trump [Soil Steward]

    Season 1, Episode 84

    Show notes

What a pleasure to sit down with the amazing Chris Trump!

Chris has spent years learning how farmers can work with biology rather than constantly relying on purchased inputs, and this conversation goes right into that bigger question: How much of what a plant needs can actually be provided by a functioning soil ecosystem?

We talk indigenous microorganisms, soil biology, mineral nutrition, plant health and nutrient density, along with where biology fits alongside minerals and amendments.

We also get into farmer independence, what Chris has learned from taking Natural Farming from theory into large-scale agriculture, and how we can start applying some of these principles in our own gardens and soils.

A really interesting conversation about microbes, minerals, plants and ultimately learning how to work a little closer with nature!

    Season 1, Episode 83

    Show notes

What if the abundance growing in our backyards could help feed our communities?

In this episode, I sit down with Lisa Redmond, founder of Lemonshare... an Australian platform helping neighbours find, share, swap and sell locally grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, plants and other garden produce.

We explore the enormous amount of food quietly growing... and often going to waste... in Australian backyards, the limitations of a food system built for scale, and the potential of adding a more local and community-driven layer.

We also discuss what it takes to turn an idea into a working platform, the challenges of connecting growers with their neighbours, and how Lemonshare could help reduce food waste, make fresh produce more accessible and rebuild stronger local relationships around food.

  13. #82 - What the Bush Teaches Us | Hamiora [Sam] Gibson

    Season 1, Episode 82

    Show notes

Sam Gibson—better known as Sam the Trap Man—has spent years working in the New Zealand bush, protecting native wildlife and helping people better understand the realities of conservation.

In this conversation, we explore the practical world of trapping and predator control, the pressures facing Aotearoa’s native species, and the experiences that have shaped Sam’s connection with the living world.

But this episode goes beyond conservation as simply fixing a problem. We discuss what it means to see ourselves as participants in nature rather than outsiders looking in, and why reconnecting with the natural world cannot only be about what we can take from it.

What does the bush need from us? What responsibilities come with belonging to a living community? And how might our relationship with nature change if we learned to listen, contribute and give something back?

A thoughtful conversation about wildlife, stewardship, reciprocity and finding our place within the wider community of life.

  15. #81 - The Art Of Award-Winning Show Gardens | Joel Barnett [InStyle Gardens]

    Season 1, Episode 81

    Show notes

In this episode I’m joined by Joel Barnett — landscaper, garden builder, educator, host of The Landscaping Podcast, and the founder of InStyle Gardens and The Landscaping School.

Joel has spent years designing and building outdoor spaces, including award-winning show gardens, and in this conversation we dig into what actually makes a garden feel alive.

We talk about the world of show gardens... the pressure, the creativity, the construction, the plant choices, the storytelling, and the hidden work that goes into creating something people can walk past and instantly feel something from.

But this isn’t just a conversation about fancy gardens. We also explore what everyday gardeners can learn from professional landscaping: how to think about structure, flow, materials, soil, plants, maintenance, and the feeling of a space over time.

  18. #78 - Why Healthy Plants Don’t Need Saving | John Kempf

    Season 1, Episode 78

    Show notes

In this episode, I sit down with John Kempf, one of the leading voices in regenerative agriculture, to explore one of the biggest mindset shifts in growing food: what if pest and disease pressure is not the problem itself, but a signal that the plant is missing something?

We talk about how many common pest issues can often be improved... and sometimes completely turned around... through simple nutritional applications, better mineral balance, healthier soil biology, and a deeper understanding of what plants actually need to become resilient.

Instead of seeing insects, disease, and crop problems as enemies to fight, this conversation looks at them as feedback from the system. John shares a powerful perspective on plant health, regenerative agriculture, soil function, nutrition, and why the future of farming may be less about constant intervention and more about growing plants strong enough that they do not need saving in the first place.

This one is for gardeners, farmers, soil nerds, and anyone interested in the deeper intelligence of natural systems.

Also, for anyone wondering why John’s video is not shown in this episode — John chooses to remain private and does not appear on camera, so his side of the conversation is audio-only - it only adds to the allure!

  19. #77 - The Regenerative Journey | Charlie Arnott

    Season 1, Episode 77

    Show notes

Charlie Arnott is an eighth-generation Australian farmer, educator, podcaster and one of the best-known voices in Australia’s regenerative agriculture space.

In this episode, we get into Charlie’s journey from conventional, high-input farming into a more biodynamic, holistic and regenerative way of working with the land.

But this chat isn’t just about farming.

It’s about changing the way we see nature, food, soil, animals, family legacy and ourselves. We talk about what it actually takes to shift old systems, how farming can become less about control and more about relationship, and why healthy soil sits underneath so much of the bigger conversation around food, health and the future.

A really grounded, honest and thought-provoking conversation with someone who has lived the transition, not just talked about it.

  20. #76 - Deep Ecology & Ecological Identity | John Seed

    Season 1, Episode 76

    Show notes

In this episode, I sit down with John Seed. A rainforest activist, deep ecology teacher, and one of Australia’s most important voices in helping people remember their place inside the living world.

We explore deep ecology not just as an idea, but as a shift in identity. Not “humans over here and nature over there”, but humans as one expression of the Earth, woven into the same living web as forests, fungi, rivers, animals, soil and everything else.

John shares from decades of rainforest activism, the birth of the Council of All Beings, and the deeper question sitting underneath so much of ecological work: how do we move from simply caring about nature, to actually feeling ourselves as part of it?

A beautiful, deep, and grounding conversation for anyone who feels that gardening, soil, forests and ecology are really pointing us back to something much bigger.
