The Tape Library - Archive of the Paranormal & the Unexplained

Some paranormal encounters are terrifying. Others are so strange that it's difficult to know what to make of them. In The Darkest Paranormal Cases, we're joined by an extraordinary collection of voices from across the paranormal community to explore the disturbing, the bizarre and the unexplained. From the tragic history and reported hauntings of Manila's infamous Film Center to shadowy figures in Japan, mysterious entities that lure children, and encounters with things that shouldn't exist, these are stories that defy easy explanation. Along the way, we'll encounter a haunted clock, a flying poster, a giant Winnie the Pooh, the ghost of Freddie Mercury, and even a Bigfoot hunt that takes a turn into the paranormal. Some are strange, some are unbelievable. But the phenomena doesn't always present itself in a straight forward manner. To close the episode, we share a listener's account of a stay at a French castle where an ordinary visit seemed to become something altogether more surreal. An experience that left her wondering whether she'd somehow crossed into an alternative reality. Lake Ontario is one of the world's great inland seas. Beneath its dark waters lie hundreds of shipwrecks, while its shores have long been associated with strange lights, ghost stories, mysterious creatures and tales of sailors who never came home. In this episode of The Tape Library, we explore the darker mysteries of Lake Ontario. From the notorious Marysburgh Vortex and the disappearance of the crew of the Bavaria, to the legend of the burning ship Nilfred and the strange story of the Sprite, Lake Ontario has accumulated a remarkable collection of stories over centuries of maritime history. We'll also investigate reports of strange lights over the lake, including a UFO sighting investigated by scientists from the University of Toronto, before turning to the lakes various monsters. And finally, we return to the real tragedy of Moses Dulmage, a young sailor who was lost on Lake Ontario during a violent autumn storm. His death became entwined with one of the Great Lakes' most enduring pieces of maritime folklore: the Witch of November. Some of these stories have plausible explanations. Others remain part of the folklore surrounding one of North America's most mysterious bodies of water. In 1972, a group of children playing in a field in Kōchi, Japan, discovered something they could not explain. It was a small metallic object, unlike anything they had seen before. But according to the strange accounts that followed, this was only the beginning. The object appeared and disappeared under mysterious circumstances. It was taken away from the field, only to seemingly return. Witnesses described strange lights and an encounter that would become one of Japan's most unusual UFO mysteries. More than fifty years later, the Kera Incident remains difficult to explain. Was it an elaborate hoax? A forgotten piece of technology? Or did the children of Kera really encounter something beyond explanation? Tonight, we explore one of the strangest and most obscure UFO cases in Japanese history. High in the Cairngorms stands Ben Macdui, the second-highest mountain in Britain. But for more than a century, climbers and mountaineers have reported something strange on its slopes.

A presence in the mist. Footsteps that seem to follow from behind. An overwhelming sense that something is close by, even when there is no one else around.

Some have described seeing a towering grey figure moving through the fog. Others have reported a feeling of inexplicable fear and the sensation of being pursued across the mountain.

Known as the Grey Man of Ben Macdui, the phenomenon has become one of Scotland's most enduring mountain mysteries.

In this episode of The Tape Library, we explore the history of Ben Macdui, the strange experiences reported by those who have ventured onto its summit, and the possible explanations for one of Britain's most unsettling unexplained phenomena.

Is there something waiting in the mist? Or can the mystery of Scotland's strangest mountain be explained by the extreme environment, the human mind, and the strange effects of being alone in the wilderness?

The mountain is waiting.

Can a painting really be haunted? Throughout history, certain works of art have attracted disturbing reputations. Some have been blamed for devastating house fires, others for terrifying paranormal encounters, and a handful have become the centre of legends so unsettling that people refuse to hang them on their walls. In this documentary, we investigate three of the world's most infamous haunted paintings: The Crying Boy, the mysterious print linked to a wave of house fires across Britain in the 1980s; The Hands Resist Him, the eerie artwork that became one of the internet's first viral paranormal mysteries; and The Anguished Man, a painting whose owner claims it brought years of terrifying supernatural activity into his home. Along the way, we'll separate documented history from urban legend, examining where these stories began, how they spread, and whether there could be any truth behind the claims. Are these paintings genuinely cursed... or are they simply some of the greatest paranormal legends ever told? If you enjoy in-depth documentaries exploring the strange, mysterious and unexplained, don't forget to subscribe to The Tape Library for new episodes every month. #paranormal #hauntedpaintings #horror #trueghoststories #urbanlegends #mystery --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Support the channel with Patreon - www.patreon.com/thetapelibrary Do you have a supernatural story to share? In this episode, we look at the disturbing case of Cindy Sauer. A story of alleged demonic possession, violent outbursts, exorcism, and the unsettling events that followed. Over the years, Cindy’s case has been featured in books, interviews and paranormal media, often presented as a dramatic battle between faith and something far darker. But what really happened to Cindy Sauer, and how much of the story can actually be verified? We trace the case from the beginning, exploring Cindy’s reported experiences, the claims of possession, the exorcism itself, and the strange details that turned her story into one of the more unsettling modern possession cases. We’ll also look at how the case has been portrayed over time, the contradictions in the story, and the lingering questions that still surround it. In August 1963, the ground suddenly collapsed beneath a Pennsylvania coal mine… trapping three men hundreds of feet underground with almost no food, light, or air. For the next 14 days, the world listened as rescuers drilled into the earth and heard something impossible — voices coming from deep below the surface. But down below, something truly strange was happening. The survivors began to be visited by strange figures... This is the true story of the Sheppton Mine Disaster, one of the most dramatic survival stories in mining history. In this documentary episode, we explore what really happened near Sheppton, how two miners survived in total darkness, the desperate rescue operation that captured global attention, and why the disaster still fascinates people today with its stranger details. Buried alive. Fourteen days underground. And a rescue the world would never forget. In 1934, in the Spanish city of Zaragoza, a quiet apartment building became the centre of one of the strangest and most unsettling paranormal cases ever recorded. A voice began speaking from inside a kitchen stove. Neighbours heard it. Police heard it. Investigators heard it. Crowds gathered outside the building as authorities launched an official investigation into what would become known as The Zaragoza Goblin. The voice laughed, mocked residents, answered questions, and seemed to move through the walls of the apartment. Even after the home was evacuated, the phenomenon continued. Leaving investigators baffled and the case officially unexplained. Was it a supernatural entity? A psychological phenomenon? Or an elaborate hoax that somehow convinced an entire city? In this full documentary, we examine the case in detail, explore the original investigation, and break down the theories that still surround one of Spain’s most disturbing unsolved mysteries. If you enjoy true paranormal cases, unsolved mysteries, and real-life ghost stories, subscribe to The Tape Library for new documentaries every month. In 1878, a quiet home in Amherst, Nova Scotia became the centre of one of the most terrifying and controversial hauntings ever recorded. Known as the Great Amherst Mystery, this chilling case follows the ordeal of Esther Cox — a young woman whose life became a nightmare of unexplained noises, flying objects, mysterious fires, and violent poltergeist activity that seemed to follow her wherever she went. Witnessed by doctors, neighbours, and even recorded in the book The Great Amherst Mystery by Walter Hubbell, the case quickly became one of the most famous paranormal stories in history. But was this truly a haunting… or something far stranger? In this episode, we explore the full timeline of events, the people involved, the controversy surrounding the investigation, and the unsettling theory that poltergeist activity may not be caused by spirits at all — but by the hidden power of the human mind. Welcome to one of the darkest paranormal cases ever documented. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Support the channel with Patreon - www.patreon.com/thetapelibrary Do you have a supernatural story to share? Hidden within the Bedfordshire countryside lies a stretch of woodland known as Bluebell Wood. A place quietly linked to some of the strangest and most disturbing encounters in the area.

In this episode, we briefly revisit the dark history surrounding nearby St Mary’s Church, Clophill, before moving deeper into the woods themselves, where the focus of this investigation truly begins.

Within Bluebell Wood, reports of animal mutilations, unexplained phenomena, and something far harder to define have surfaced over the years. Hidden clearings, precise and unsettling discoveries, and a complete absence of evidence at the scene raise disturbing questions about what may have taken place there.

Beyond the forest, the surrounding area has also been linked to sightings of strange lights in the sky and alleged encounters with the so-called Blue Man of Studham Common. Witnesses have described winged humanoid figures—often compared to the Mothman—as well as sightings of the legendary Black Shuck.

Individually, these accounts are difficult to explain. But taken together, they suggest something more. A pattern of strange activity centred around this part of the countryside.

This episode also explores the idea of high strangeness. The theory that UFO sightings, cryptids, and paranormal encounters may not be separate phenomena at all, but different expressions of the same unknown force.

What is really happening in Bluebell Wood?
