The Tone Mob Podcast

Music, Music Interviews, Technology

The year was 2015. Show host Blake Wyland intended to start a podcast where he took a deep dive with his guests from the guitar world to explain their rigs. What happened was that, but also a whole lot more. The show quickly evolved into discussions about people's lives. Guitars, pedals, amps, etc. are the central hub of the show, but it really is more about the PEOPLE behind all of it. Both the musicians who use the gear, and the folks that create these magical tools of expression. You can expect chats about songwriting, favorite bands, family, loss, addiction, conspiracy theories, philosophy, and most of all....... food. This podcast goes all over the place. Come take a ride.

  1. The Guitar That Got Away… Did My Guest Buy It? | Mike Ball of Mike N Mike’s Guitar Bar

    Episode 539

    Show notes

You know that guitar you passed on years ago and still think about? Imagine telling that story to someone… and realizing they might be the person who bought it.

Mike Ball of Mike N Mike’s Guitar Bar joins me to talk about building one of Seattle’s most inspiring guitar shops, starting with a single guitar in a garage. We dig into Fender offsets, Japanese “lawsuit” guitars, obscure Gibsons, and creating a space where people feel welcome to actually play the good stuff. There’s also a surprising amount of Disneyland influence involved… including an indoor trailer park.

Mike shares stories from sourcing gear in Japan, bringing a smashed 1963 Gretsch White Falcon back to life over ten years, and rescuing a fire-damaged Rickenbacker. We also discuss when restoring a vintage guitar makes sense, when its weird old modifications deserve to stay, and why the right instrument sometimes takes a decade to find you.

Plus, my sticker-covered Mustang apparently had quite the fan club, we compare pizza notes, and a Jazzmaster story I’ve told on this show for years takes a wildly unexpected turn.

  2. Emily Wolfe Almost Quit… Then Her Phone Went Off

    Episode 538

    Show notes

Emily Wolfe was riding home from a brutal tour, looking up what she could get for her gear on Reverb, and seriously considering calling it quits. Then a text came through that helped change everything.

One of my favorite artists (and guests) returns to the show for an incredibly honest conversation about the realities of making music for a living. Emily shares how connecting with producer Gavin Brown helped her rediscover her excitement for songwriting, learn to accept some help, and find a new direction. We dig into her single “Kill Me with a Kiss,” her upcoming record, and the emotional whiplash of touring… including the stuff musicians rarely want to admit out loud.

We also get into her incredible Billie Eilish-meets-Black Sabbath performance, attempt to figure out what Rick Rubin actually does, and discuss whether I should buy a van and start recording podcasts in parking lots. Naturally, Power Rangers, Dread Zeppelin, and a medically questionable amount of Diet Coke also enter the conversation.

  3. “My Job Is Guitar” with Emily Harris of Get Offset

    Episode 537

    Show notes

When somebody asks what you do for a living, sometimes the easiest answer is simply... “guitar.”

This week, Emily Harris of Get Offset returns for a long overdue catch-up! We dig into her journey from podcasting to gear demos, the changing landscape of guitar YouTube, and how she’s pieced together a career around the stuff she loves. Along the way, Emily explains how French pastry videos inspired her guitar interview series and why enjoying the process matters when the algorithm decides to ignore your hard work.

We also get into the guitars we actually reach for, her surprisingly practical gigging pedalboard, and the experience of plugging an Acoustasonic into a wall of Marshall stacks. Plus, stories from her days working Formula 1 events, my questionable ability to visit guitar stores without buying something, and her band Golden West’s forthcoming album.

Naturally, there’s also hot sauce, car trouble, and a little pizza talk. We covered a lot of ground on this one!

  4. When Did 2001 Become Vintage? w/ Phillip Carter of 40 Watt Podcast

    Episode 536

    Show notes

My buddy Philip Carter from the 40 Watt Podcast is back, and this one started the way a lot of our conversations do... We were talking about guitars before hitting record and eventually realized we should probably be recording this nonsense.

It all starts with a surprisingly complicated question: What actually makes a guitar vintage?

Is it age? Rarity? Desirability? Or have we all just gotten old enough that the stuff we grew up with is suddenly considered collectible?

Philip and I dig into the strange psychology of vintage guitars, why people pay ridiculous amounts of money for old instruments, and whether modern guitars are actually better than their vintage counterparts. We also get into the musicians who shaped our tastes, the power of nostalgia, and why a 60-year-old guitar can be worth a fortune even when a brand-new one might objectively perform better.

Naturally, this leads us into discussions about old Subarus, muscle cars, Blockbuster Video, the questionable state of Pizza Hut, and the financial consequences of being both a guitar enthusiast AND a car enthusiast.

We also catch up on Philip's ambitious recording studio project in Mississippi, which leads to a great conversation about making music, building communities, and why getting musicians together in a room might be more important than ever.

Old guitars, new studios, and two guys slowly coming to terms with the fact that we're becoming vintage ourselves.

  5. Get Off Your Phone and Play Guitar w/ Shelby Pollard of Black Bobbin

    Episode 535

    Show notes

Shelby Pollard of Black Bobbin is back on the show, and apparently we had some things to work through.

This conversation starts with burnout, work/life balance, phone addiction, and the strange exhaustion that comes from being constantly connected. From there, Blake and Shelby wander into the attention economy, social media’s ability to make everyone else’s life look suspiciously perfect, and why it can be so difficult to simply be happy when somebody else is succeeding.

Eventually, they even talk about guitars.

Shelby explains the philosophy behind Black Bobbin, why his real goal is simply to get people off their phones and playing guitar for fifteen minutes a day, and why gear should remove barriers to inspiration rather than become another endless cycle of consumption.

They also dig into the weird self-deprecation of guitar players, internet criticism, the pressure to turn every creative act into “content,” giving yourself permission to be bad at something, and the simple joy of making music that nobody else ever needs to hear.

Maybe the guitar was fine all along.

  6. “Don’t Get a Job.” w/ Zoe Jet of Zoe Jet Guitars

    Episode 534

    Show notes

Zoe’s path into guitar building is a pretty fascinating one. She grew up surrounded by artists, started out as a drummer, dove deep into piano and composition, and at one point thought she might pursue film scoring. Eventually, though, she realized she missed actually making physical things with her hands.

A random guitar-building job listing sent her down the rabbit hole, which eventually led to an apprenticeship with Barry Grzebik of Grez Guitars and a job at LMI. From there, she spent years learning the craft before developing her own very distinctive instrument, the Model Z.

We get into the surprisingly difficult process of designing a guitar that looks genuinely different without looking completely ridiculous, building prototypes, neck shapes, the influence of Strats and offset guitars, and why funk and Khruangbin ended up finding their way into the Model Z’s DNA.

We also talk about the less glamorous side of being a creative person: selling your work, social media, learning to market yourself when you’d rather stay in the shop, and figuring out what kind of career actually works for the way your brain is wired.

Plus…John Bonham, Bulgarian women’s choirs, big guitar necks, magical guitar-player fairy dust, BOSS pedals, and an extremely specific pizza recommendation.

  7. Fugazi on a Six-Figure Martin w/ Jason Verlinde

    Episode 533

    Show notes

My buddy Jason Verlinde of The Fretboard Journal is back on the show, and this time we’re fresh off the Fretboard Summit in Chicago.

I finally made it to the Summit this year, so Jason and I dig into what actually goes into putting on an event like this, why it feels so different from a traditional guitar show, and how they’ve managed to create something that feels less like a convention and more like a gigantic gathering of guitar nerds who actually want to hang out with each other.

We talk vintage Martins wandering around in gig bags, Bob Taylor and Chris Martin casually hanging out with attendees, Fugazi being played on a six-figure acoustic guitar at an Irish bar, and the surprisingly complicated logistics of stuffing 100 exhibitors, workshops, concerts, builders, musicians, and assorted guitar weirdos into the Old Town School of Folk Music.

We also get into some big changes at The Fretboard Journal. After more than two decades of Jason handling an enormous amount of the magazine himself, the team is growing. What does that mean? We get into it!

From there we get into the strange resurgence of print, the growing appeal of real-world experiences, social media fatigue, putting our phones down once in a while, trail running, powerlifting, and the joy of having a hobby where you’re allowed to be a beginner again.

  8. Repair, Don’t Replace w/ Jeff Leavitt (Tone Ranger) & Ben Matin (RestoWraps)

    Episode 532

    Show notes

On this episode of The Tone Mob Podcast, I’m hanging out with Jeff Leavitt of Tone Ranger Guitars and Ben Matin of RestoWraps, two guys who have gone impressively deep into the worlds of guitar building, vintage gear restoration, and keeping perfectly good stuff out of the landfill.

Jeff builds Western-inspired guitars using locally sourced urban lumber from Los Angeles, turning trees that might otherwise have been discarded into instruments with a story. Ben approaches vintage amp and cabinet restoration more like art conservation, repairing old Tolex, recreating grill cloth, resurrecting Hammond hardware, and generally doing everything possible to preserve the history already baked into a piece of gear.

We get into how both of them found their way into these extremely specific corners of the guitar world, why repair work can make you a better builder, repurposing old Hammond reverb amps into killer guitar amps, the importance of questioning “tradition,” what separates good craftsmanship from great craftsmanship, excessively dangerous capacitors, flatwound strings, stereo rigs, Westerns, and quite a bit of pizza.

It’s a wonderfully nerdy conversation about building things well, fixing things properly, and occasionally asking, “Why are we doing it this way in the first place?”

  9. How to Actually Make It in Music w/ Liz The Music Manager

    Episode 531

    Show notes

Liz Kamlet, better known online as Liz The Music Manager, has spent most of her life somewhere behind the curtain of the music business. She started shooting tour photography as a teenager, worked around artists like James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Kenny Loggins, somehow became the person Guitar Center called when a famous musician wanted to buy a vintage guitar, and eventually found herself managing artists, running tours and helping musicians navigate an increasingly strange industry.

On this episode of The Tone Mob Podcast, Liz joins me to talk about how all of that happened and, more importantly, what independent artists should actually be doing in 2026.

We get into building an online presence, networking, co-writing, getting people to care about your original music, the real cost of releasing records, why a record deal shouldn't necessarily be the goal, and why you absolutely need someone qualified to look at a contract before you sign it.

Liz also shares some genuinely wild stories from behind the scenes, including artists getting ripped off for millions of dollars, questionable industry tactics, disappearing musicians, stolen guitars and the time she broke BOTH of her forearms saving one of James Taylor's guitars from taking a dive off the stage at Red Rocks.

So yeah. We talk a lot about the music business.

    And a little about guitars.

  10. Why Isn’t This on Every Guitar? w/ NVision Guitars

    Episode 530

    Show notes

What if, instead of asking a musician to adapt to their guitar, you built the guitar to adapt to the musician?

On this episode of The Tone Mob Podcast, I’m hanging out with Renee and Tristan from NVision Guitars, a mother-and-son team building some seriously cool instruments with an even cooler purpose behind them.

NVision makes handcrafted guitars for players who may face physical or visual barriers with a traditional instrument. That includes their sensory navigation system, which uses tactile markers on the back of the neck and differently shaped controls to help players navigate the instrument by touch rather than sight.

We get into where the idea came from, Tristan teaching himself to build guitars, Renee’s 27-year career in the federal government and military, the terrifying health scare that helped push them toward something more meaningful, and why they decided to take the leap into the guitar business together.

We also talk about designing alongside blind and low-vision musicians instead of simply guessing what they need, the realities of running a small family business, NAMM, death metal wedding music, Tenacious D, homemade stuffed-crust pizza, and apparently phenomenal gas station food in Iowa.

This one is a great conversation about guitars, accessibility, craftsmanship, and figuring out what you actually want to spend your life doing.

  11. Dylan McKerchie Cut a Harley Benton in Half (But Why?)

    Episode 532

    Show notes

It has been way too long since Dylan McKerchie of Dylan Talks Tone has been on the show, and quite a bit has changed since our last conversation. Dylan has a home base, his daughter is working full time winding pickups with him, the business is cranking, and somehow he is producing an absolutely unreasonable amount of guitar content every week.

We get into what happens when the thing you love also becomes your job, finding some kind of work/life balance when your shop is approximately 15 feet from your couch, and why both of us have found ourselves reaching for acoustic guitars when we want guitar playing to feel like a hobby again.

We also dig into something Dylan has built remarkably well over the years: community. Why the people surrounding Dylan Talks Tone matter more than view counts, how those relationships translate into a real business, and why making guitar content is ultimately about helping somebody squeeze a little more joy out of the limited time they get with their instrument.

Of course, things eventually go sideways.

Dylan recently cut a Harley Benton in half in the name of science, and certain corners of the guitar internet reacted with the calm, measured restraint you would expect from the internet. We talk cheap guitars, what makes an instrument actually recommendable, gear snobbery, angry comment sections, beginner gear, Boss Katanas, expensive guitars, unreliable European cars, and why “I like this” and “you should buy this” are two completely different statements.

And somehow we wrap the whole thing up with Afroman, a cowboy bar, and Dylan's very expensive guitar getting extremely sweaty.

  12. Building the Next Chapter w/ Randy King of King Electric Guitars

    Episode 531

    Show notes

This week I’m hanging out with Randy King of King Electric Guitars, and what starts as a conversation about old cars takes approximately four minutes to wander off the road and into something much bigger.

Randy has been obsessed with making things for most of his life. He bought his first car at ten years old, spent his youth tearing into old hot rods, served in the Air Force, played music, and eventually found himself building guitars. Now, at 53, King Electric Guitars is beginning to turn from an idea into the next chapter of his life.

We get into the strange mechanics of building a small guitar company, why gifting a guitar to Chuck Ragan was both heartfelt and completely calculated, learning to stop tying happiness to accomplishments, getting diagnosed with ADHD later in life, and realizing that maybe the goal isn’t to become a different person. Maybe it’s figuring out how to use the brain, hands, and ridiculous collection of life experiences you already have.

There’s also a $75 Oldsmobile, a sketchy Falcon Ranchero, purple alligator “work shoes,” powerlifting, and a gym that apparently runs almost entirely on free weights and ammonia.

  13. Zao Is Getting Sludgier With Age (Scott Mellinger)

    Episode 530

    Show notes

Scott Mellinger of Zao returns to The Tone Mob for a long-overdue hang, and apparently age comes for us all in different ways. Some people take up golf. Zao seems to be getting slower, heavier, and sludgier.

Scott digs into Pillars, Zao’s new collection paying tribute to the overlooked bands from their local scene that helped create the blueprint for what they eventually became. That leads into the strange history of early metalcore, bands that arrived a decade too soon, and the peculiar experience of having your very human record temporarily flagged for AI by an AI.

From there, things naturally get weird. Blake horrifies Scott with the darker side of streaming fraud, Scott recounts his pilgrimage to EarthQuaker Day, and the two discuss pedal nerd community, Sweetwater, meeting your musical heroes, and why perfectly normal human beings somehow become twelve feet tall the second they step onto a stage.

There’s also talk of getting older while refusing to leave the mosh pit, the health benefits of heavy metal and occasional cheesecake, Scott’s resurrected side project Lonely Ghost Parade, more Zao cover material, and, most importantly, a brand-new Zao record currently taking shape.

Scott brought a lot to talk about. We managed to talk about guitars occasionally sometimes.

  14. How Frank Gross Built Thunder Road Guitars One Guitar At A Time

    Episode 529

    Show notes

This week on The Tone Mob, Blake sits down with Frank Gross, founder of Thunder Road Guitars Seattle, for a conversation about music, retail, risk, reinvention, and the strange magic of simply refusing to disappear.

Frank tells the story of leaving the band life behind, moving back to Seattle, and slowly turning Craigslist flips, pawn shop finds, and a tiny workspace into one of the most respected guitar shops on the West Coast. We dig into the early days of Thunder Road, the importance of branding, the realities of bootstrapping a business, and why “just show up and try” might be the most brutally useful advice a new business owner can hear.

We also get into the brand-new Thunder Road Seattle location, building an in-person retail experience in an increasingly online world, the chaos of moving a working guitar store, punk and screamo war stories, favorite Boss pedals, gigantic pizza, and why guitar shops still matter.

  15. Emerald City Guitars: Trevor Boone and the Art of the Guitar Hunt

    Episode 524

    Show notes

Trevor Boone basically grew up inside a guitar shop.

His dad started Emerald City Guitars in Seattle back in the mid-90s with a shoestring business plan, a small loan, and a whole lot of secondhand guitar-store dream dust. Trevor was the kid at the counter, surrounded by musicians, weird old guitars, shop talk, and the kind of musical obsession that tends to permanently rewire a person.

In this episode, we get into Trevor’s journey from pre-eBay guitar hunts with his dad to becoming one of the people collectors call when they are searching for serious vintage pieces. We talk Bursts, Dumbles, Silvertones, funky under-a-thousand-dollar treasures, and the strange balance of loving the oddball stuff while also surviving in the high-end vintage guitar world.

We also dig into how guitar retail has changed, why proper setup and authentication matter more than ever, the pressure of social media, the magic of instruments that simply make you play better, and why the best guitar shops still feel like the barbershops of the music world.

There is also some Boss DM-2 love, Seattle pizza talk, Garth Brooks, Stringjoy Foxwoods, and the usual amount of beautiful guitar nonsense.

  16. The Yvette Young Episode With Superman in It

    Episode 523

    Show notes

Yvette Young is back on the podcast, which means we are legally required to talk about beautiful guitar parts, creative chaos, and the strange little circus act of trying to be a functioning artist in the modern world.

This time around, Yvette digs into her work on the new Superman soundtrack, including what it was like getting mysterious NDA phone calls, turning around guitar cues on tight deadlines, and then watching the movie wondering which of her parts survived the final cut instead of, you know, simply enjoying the movie like a normal person.

We also get into the deeper stuff: burnout, touring, trying to make time for solo music, learning to serve someone else’s creative vision, and the eternal struggle of doing enough work to survive without accidentally sanding your soul down to a decorative nub.

There’s also talk of signature gear, musician play dates, creative retreats in the woods, and why music should probably be treated less like a sport and more like a weird, beautiful thing humans do because our brains won’t leave us alone.

Yvette is always a delight, and this one gets wonderfully real.

    Episode 522

    Show notes

Buddy Blues joins The Tone Mob for a long-overdue conversation about guitar, YouTube, blues, pedals, and the strange little internet ecosystem where all of those things collide.

Buddy shares his story, from growing up in Beirut playing classical piano, discovering electric guitar through blues and Pink Floyd, moving to Florida as a teenager, gigging heavily, touring with John Mayall, and eventually finding his way into the world of guitar YouTube after the live music world hit a wall in 2020.

Blake and Buddy dig into the grind of making gear content, the difference between demos and entertainment, learning to stop trying to win everybody over, the weirdness of algorithm life, favorite amps, recording setups, Victory amps, Fender Supersonics, the value of bedroom-player opinions, and why guitar culture sometimes takes itself way too seriously.

They also talk about Buddy’s new LSL Instruments signature Satikoy, Stringjoy strings landing in Guitar Center, the Boss DM-101, proper Neapolitan pizza, and why the blues and death metal apparently share custody of Lebanon’s guitar scene.

  18. How 29 Pedals Made Buffers Cool

    Episode 521

    Show notes

Jesse Honig of 29 Pedals finally joins The Tone Mob, and we are digging all the way into the beautifully nerdy machinery of his story.

Before launching 29 Pedals, Jesse spent years inside studios, tape machines, consoles, repair benches, and the general glowing underworld of professional audio. He worked as a roadie as a teenager, became a studio assistant in Philadelphia, built a life as a session player, engineer, and tech, then eventually found himself working with companies like Slate Digital and Manley Labs before deciding it was time to build something of his own.

That something became EUNA, a deceptively “simple” pedal that helped turn the humble buffer into a serious tone tool. Blake and Jesse get into why guitars are terrible at driving cable, why input impedance matters, why pedalboards can be treated like modular studio channel strips, and why 29 Pedals approaches design from a very different angle.

There is also talk of OAMP, fuzzes, overdrives, true bypass, manufacturing headaches, component changes, guitar strings, weird gear obsessions, and the joy of solving problems most people do not even realize they have.

  19. Why Musora Is Putting Your Favorite Bands On The Spot

    Episode 520

    Show notes

Ron Jackson has one of those jobs that sounds suspiciously like something a music nerd invented while staring at the ceiling.

As the host and producer of Musora’s Covers On The Spot, Ron brings bands into the studio, hands them an iconic song from somewhere outside their natural habitat, and gives them only a few hours to rebuild it in their own image. The results have included Emily Wolfe dragging Billie Eilish into the smoky riff dungeon of Black Sabbath, Archspire attacking Rosé and Bruno Mars with impossible quantities of technical death metal, and Thursday being forced to figure it all out while Ron quietly watches the pressure gauge climb.

Ron joins me to explain how the show came together, what makes a band right for the challenge, and why convincing touring musicians to spend their day off writing a surprise cover is not always the easiest pitch in the world.

We also get into Musora’s evolution beyond Drumeo, Ron’s former life as an English and musical-theater teacher, the strange experience of working with your musical heroes, and the delicate art of being an enthusiastic fan without becoming what musicians lovingly call “a punisher.”

Naturally, we also discuss Thrice, vintage Gibson Grabbers, the Rusty Box, questionable bass purchases, Boss pedals and a long-lost shrimp pizza that may now exist only in legend.

  20. Sal Mignano on Held, The Sleeping & a Lifetime of Loud

    Episode 519

    Show notes

Sal Mignano has never been particularly interested in making the bass behave itself.

As a founding member of The Sleeping and one-third of the thunderous new project Held, Sal writes riffs from the bottom up, stacks distortion pedals into increasingly hostile little ecosystems, and believes the bass should do considerably more than quietly hold everyone’s coat.

Sal joins Blake to tell the wonderfully accidental origin story of Held, including free studio time, a last-minute guitarist cancellation, and Douglas Robinson being gently shoved toward the six-string. They also dig into Sal’s long musical history, from funk bands and Skycamefalling to The Sleeping, along with the lessons he learned from the late John “Beatz” Holohan of Bayside.

Naturally, there is gear. A lot of gear. Sal walks through his collection of gloriously battered Gibson Grabbers, vintage Rickenbackers, Fender basses, obscure pedals, enormous Gallien-Krueger touring rigs, and the wonderfully inconvenient magic that still keeps real amplifiers alive.

They also discuss the digital takeover, recording with actual producers, surviving the social-media era, and why thirty seconds of flawless internet guitar probably consumed somebody’s entire afternoon.
