It's Happening! St Andrews Old Course Preview
Season 1, Episode 92
Show notes
Five hours after finding out we’d got on the Old Course at St Andrews, we hit record, and neither of us could stop grinning.
The Old Course is ranked number two on our list, it’s the course every golfer dreams of playing, and we were teeing off two days later. This is episode 92 of the Top 100 in 10 Golf Podcast, recorded before we played: two giddy golfers, a chaotic day of train bookings, and a lot of first-tee nerves.
In this episode:
• Why St Andrews is the ultimate golfing pilgrimage, and why Chris’s only childhood dream was winning the Open here
• The first-tee fear: a huge fairway, out of bounds down the left, and the “stay left” advice we keep hearing
• The Road Hole 17th, driving over the corner of the hotel, and the Valley of Sin on 18
• Why the 12th hole hides its bunkers (the course used to be played in reverse)
• Old Tom Morris, the 1764 decision that fixed golf at 18 holes, and Tiger Woods’ bunker-free Open in 2000
• Is the Old Course overrated? Chris’s Beatles argument for why the doubters are missing the point
• The St Andrews checklist: the Jigger Inn, the Dunvegan, bag tags and the Himalayas putting green
• The Signature Holes Challenge and the side bet we invented liveOur full verdict on the Old Course comes in the review. Until then, the one thing that really helps us reach more golfers is you hitting follow on your podcast app.

Carnoustie Revisted: Does a Second Round Change the Ranking?
Season 1, Episode 91
Show notes
I (Nish) went back to Carnoustie with something to prove, and this time the wind never turned up.
Last time we played Carnoustie Golf Links, it was in the famous brutal winds of “Carnasty”, and I barely got to see the course. This time, at exactly the same time of year, the flags hung dead straight and the sun shone all day. For the first time I could take in the Championship Course the way it was designed, from a high-handicapper’s eye view. I’ve come down from an 18 handicap to 15.8 since my last visit, and it shows.
In this episode:
• Why zero wind changes everything at an Open Championship links, and what I missed first time
• Immaculate fairways, carpet greens and the green-to-tee transitions I never noticed before
• Why Carnoustie’s bunkering is a mental test, not a punishment
• Hogan’s Alley (the 6th), Ben Hogan’s only Open win, and the Barry Burn finish on the 18th
• A 90 that beat my handicap, with no lost balls
• Post-round in the hotel bar with our host Paul from Golfing Around Scotland, plus Andrew and Tony
• The crazy realisation about the Top 100 list: do we have to play every course twice?Top 100 in 10 is nominated for Best Sports Podcast at the Independent Podcast of the Year Awards. If you enjoy the show, hitting follow is the single biggest thing you can do to help us reach more golfers.

Josh Simpson (Ginger Golf) Played 652 Courses. We Asked About the Showers!
Season 1
Show notes
A world record holder, a motorhome he calls a Sherman tank, and a shower-rating system that took on a life of its own.
Josh Simpson, the Ginger Golfer, played 652 golf courses in a single calendar year. In this bonus episode, I skip the usual questions and ask about the stuff that makes you wince: the key that snapped in the lock (twice), the scrambled eggs he deeply regretted ordering, the hungover round after a night backstage with the Wombats, and the day his team made him play one more course, soaked through, two days before the finish.
We also get into the golf community that carried him round the country, the best advice he has for anyone chasing a bucket-list course (“don’t be a dick” is the short version), handicap gaming, whether he’d do it again (he reckons 750 was possible), his favourite hidden gems outside the top 100, and four questions from you.
If you enjoy the show, the one thing that really helps us reach more golfers is hitting follow.

We Took 10 Golfers to Lindrick Golf Club - a Ryder Cup venue. (Beyond The Top 100 #3)
Season 1, Episode 90
Show notes
Ryder Cup history, three tour stars as members, and a reputation for being a bit exclusive. So why did a society of ten amateurs get treated like old friends at Lindrick Golf Club?
We took our Top 100 Society to South Yorkshire for our third society day, to a course that sits outside our UK & Ireland list but ranked 82 in the English Top 100. This is the visitor's-eye view: the welcome, the course, and whether it deserves a place on your list.
In this episode:
• The 1957 Ryder Cup, the last GB&I win, and the farmer who nearly derailed it over a £150 fee for the 5th tee
• Head professional Andy on what visitors get wrong about Lindrick, and why John Jacobs matters here
• Why three Lindrick members (Westwood, Fitzpatrick and Willett) played together in the 2016 Ryder Cup
• A club with no tee sheet for members, where clubs are waiting out for them when they turn up
• The back-nine run from 12 to 18, with par threes that wouldn't look out of place at Formby
• The small touches (the range-ball bag, the scorecards) and the pro-shop moment that says it allOur verdict: at roughly £85–£150 a round, it's a serious golf course with a genuine welcome, and it's one to add to your list.

Looking Beyond The Top 100: A Golf Fanatic's Guide
Season 1, Episode 89
Show notes
Rory McIlroy just named Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale Old and Hankley Common as his three favourite courses in England, and all three are in Andy's top ten.
Andy (@28to8golf) counts down his top ten courses, from Hillside and St George's Hill to Turnberry and Sunningdale Old, and tells us why St Andrews Old Course only makes number six. Along the way he names the hidden gems beyond the Top 100: Pleasington near Blackburn, The Players Club in Bristol, Mold in Wales, plus short-course favourites like the Queen's at Gleneagles and Balcomie at Crail.
He also takes us behind the scenes of Josh Simpson's world record 652 courses in a year: cold-calling Scottish clubs, the 6,000-yard rule, and the putter that nearly had the wrong number on it. Find Andy on Instagram: @28to8golf

Revisiting Swinley Forest: Did It Still Live Up To The Hype?
Season 1, Episode 88
Show notes
I called Swinley Forest my number one course in the UK the first time I played it. Then I got the chance to play it twice in one day — and I wanted to know if it would still hold up.
Listen to our Swinley Forest Review
When a society day at Swinley Forest had a last-minute dropout, I jumped at the chance to go back — 36 holes, shotgun start, and a four-course carvery lunch in the middle, the kind of tradition you find at clubs like Sunningdale, Royal St George's and Walton Heath. It was my first time playing 36 holes in a day, my first shotgun start, and my first time revisiting any of the 29 courses we've played so far.
In this episode: how the society day came about, what 36 holes and a shotgun start actually feels like, the four-course carvery experience, how the club handled my gluten-free/coeliac needs, whether the course conditioning held up after a summer of heatwaves, a costly mishap on the 18th green (and the tip I learned from it), and my final verdict — does Swinley Forest still deserve the number one spot?

Walton Heath Old & New Course Review: Baked in a Heatwave
Season 1, Episode 87
Show notes
We turned up to Walton Heath Golf Club in the middle of the UK's third heatwave of the summer, found out our booking had been binned, and ended up playing two intertwined, Ryder Cup-pedigree golf courses as just the two of us — in golden hour, on fairways baked so dry the ball was rolling 200+ yards.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
This episode covers the golf at Walton Heath — both the Old Course (ranked 39 in the world top 100) and the New Course (ranked 88), reviewed together because the two courses share the same land and are played as a composite layout for events like the Ryder Cup and the AIG Women's Open. We talk brutal heather, ridiculous bunkering, our top holes on both courses, a 36-hole match play battle, and a signature hole challenge on each.

Was Wentworth Worth It? Wentworth West Course Review
Season 1, Episode 86
Show notes
Every golfer in Britain has seen Wentworth's first tee on TV. Almost nobody gets to stand on it. We did — and by the end of the round, we disagreed with each other about where it actually ranks.

Check out our pics and scorecard from Wentworth
This episode covers our round on the West Course at Wentworth Golf Club, home of the BMW PGA Championship: the sub-air greens system, the "another planet" clubhouse, standing on the actual championship tee with the grandstands up, and the honest debate about whether Wentworth's reputation is built on fame or genuinely deserved.
Inside this episode:
• Standing on the championship first tee with the grandstands already up
• The sub-air system greens — the best putting surfaces either of us has ever played
• Why Wentworth doesn't fit neatly into "heathland" or "parkland," and whether that's cost it in the rankings
• Steven Spielberg's house on the 3rd hole
• The genuine disagreement: Chris ranks it his new number two all-time. Nish says it sits just outside his top five — even after calling it his favourite day on the challenge so farThe one thing that actually helps us reach more golfers is you hitting follow right now.

How the Solheim Cup Will Be Won or Lost, with Sophie Walker - Sky Sports Golf Analyst
Season 1, Episode 85
Show notes
Nelly Korda is the best player in the world — and she's lost her last two Solheim Cup singles matches. Sky Sports Golf's Sophie Walker joins us to explain why, and to put her name to a score.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
Sophie Walker is back on the show ahead of the twentieth Solheim Cup, live on Sky Sports Golf from Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, 11–13 September. We get into the stories nobody else is covering properly: Anna Nordqvist's decision to captain rather than play after nine straight Solheim Cup appearances, the real story behind Gimmegate, two very different pregnancy narratives either side of the Atlantic, and whether Nelly Korda's aura has actually cracked. Then Sophie calls the score.

Walton Heath Golf Club, Part 1: The Most Significant Clubhouse We've Seen
Season 1, Episode 84
Show notes
WeI've never dedicated a whole episode to a clubhouse before. Walton Heath Golf Club changed that.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
We played this Surrey Heathland course in a back-to-back pairs event — old course one day, new course the next — but by the time I'd walked its corridors, I knew the clubhouse itself needed its own feature. This episode isn't about the golf (that's part two). It's about everything that happens before you even put a tee in the ground: a king who served as club captain, four former Prime Ministers on the wall, a hidden museum dedicated to James Braid tucked behind the pro shop, and a hospitality standard — the "Walton Way" — that actually lives up to the name.
Inside this episode:
• Why Walton Heath's reputation is more intimidating than the reality
• James Braid: five Open wins, 46 years as the club's professional, and why he refused to change a single thing about the course design
• The museum most visitors walk straight past
• Prince Edward, four Prime Ministers, and the 1981 Ryder Cup
• The terrace, the giant putting green, and one genuinely odd walk to the driving rangePart two — the actual golf — is coming in a couple of weeks.

Formby Golf Club Review: Classy and Unforgettable
Season 1, Episode 83
Show notes
We didn't expect Formby Golf Club to feel like this. After playing our way through England's Golf Coast, we assumed we knew what to expect — heather, gorse, that classic Southport links look. Formby threw that out the window.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
In this episode we review Formby Golf Club, ranked among the Top 100 Golf Courses in the UK and Ireland, and now sitting at 39 in our list (up from 52). We talk through the tree-lined, almost heathland-meets-links character that makes it stand apart from its Golf Coast neighbours, the story behind the club's famous hippo head trophy (stolen luck, a warship, and a letter to the Admiralty), our Signature Hole Challenge on the par-five 8th, and why a £320 green fee might just be worth it.
We also cover:
• The Donald Steel-redesigned 7th and why it's one of the best strategic holes on the course
• Hole 3's reputation as one of the best tee shots in the Northwest of England
• The stretch from 12 to 14, including why you should always play 14 from the championship tees
• Our verdict on whether Formby cracks the top five golf courses we've played so farFormby Golf Club joins our ongoing challenge to play every course in the Top 100 Golf Courses UK and Ireland ranking in 10 years, alongside nearby links and heathland courses like Hillside, Wallasey, and Royal Birkdale.

Wentworth Golf Club Preview: The One Nish Manifested!
Season 1, Episode 82
Show notes
Nish manifested a round at Wentworth on one of our earliest episodes — and this week, it actually happened.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
We're in the car on the way to Virginia Water to play the West Course — Burma Road — as a member's guest, the only way on at one of Britain's most gated golf clubs.
Before we plug the car in, we cover: the 1926 match at Wentworth that gave birth to the Ryder Cup; why the fairways went wild in WWII and the extraordinary story of who cleared them; the property developer who hired Harry Colt to build two golf courses just to sell houses; the Ernie Els redesign that had Ian Poulter fuming ("I don't like this golf course. Period."); the only sub-air greens in England; and the big one-round dilemma — with only one crack at Wentworth, do you go for everything or protect the scorecard?
Plus: our Ryder Cup venue match play returns, a bunkerless 600-yard Signature Hole Challenge, silver-engraved honours boards, and an "elite" breakfast.
This is our preview from the road — the full review episode follows once we've played it.

Liphook Golf Club Review: A Heathland With The Best Greens We've Ever Played
Season 1, Episode 81
Show notes
It chucked it down for all 18 holes — and we still walked off calling these the best greens we've played on any of our 28 Top 100 courses.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
Liphook Golf Club sits quietly in the Surrey/Hampshire sand belt at #79 in the Top 100 — and almost nobody outside it seems to know. This week we review it with a member, Oscar, who talks us through his top three holes (including the two new ones from the redesign), the greens running 12.6 on the stimp, and the digital twin technology he's building to let you play a course before you've set foot on it.
Also in this episode: Andrew's cricket-glove rain hack, a par three that cost Chris and Nish 11 shots between them, the seventh hole that straddles two counties, and why a summer twilight round here might be the best £135 in Top 100 golf.

100th Episode Special: Two Years, 28 Courses & One Betrayal at Loch Lomond
Season 1, Episode 80
Show notes
One hundred episodes in, and Chris drops the bombshell we've been sitting on: he played Loch Lomond — Scotland's most exclusive golf club — and he did it without us.

Two years. 100 weekly episodes. 28 courses ticked off the Top 100 (29 if you're Chris). To mark the milestone, Jim takes the hosting chair and puts us under the microscope: the episode-one memories, the courses we'd play again because we got them wrong first time (Cruden Bay, S&A, West Lancs), whether Silloth has finally been knocked off Chris's No.1 spot, the courses that blew us away when we least expected it (Delamere, Gullane, Ganton), and inside Loch Lomond's locker room — the plushest place in golf.
Plus what's coming: Wentworth with the BMW PGA stands up, Royal Birkdale after The Open, the Old Course, and a date with the Postage Stamp at Troon.

Swinley Forest Golf Club: Heathland Golf At Its Best?

We cover the signature hole challenge on the par-3 4th, Chris's putting collapse, the best collection of par 3s either of us has played, and the moment the scores came in — before the reveal that Swinley Forest is now Nish's new #1, ahead of Trump International.

Walton Heath Old & New Preview: Two Courses, One Rivalry
Season 1, Episode 78
Show notes
We're doing something we've never done before — playing two golf courses back to back at the same club, and pitting the "old money vs new money" of Surrey heathland against each other.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
This episode we're previewing both the Old Course (ranked 39, an ever-present in the world's top 100 since rankings began in 1938) and the New Course (ranked 88) at Walton Heath — a Ryder Cup venue where GB&I once got hammered 18½–9½ back in 1981.
We dig into the club's remarkable design history: amateur architect Herbert Fowler's very first course (he went on to design Pebble Beach), and James Braid's 46 years as club professional — during which he redesigned 400 courses worldwide and never touched a single hole of Fowler's original layout, out of pure respect.
Expect brutal bunkers, the most heather of any course in the UK (allegedly), a royal club captain who briefly became a king, four British Prime Ministers on the members list, and a genuine handicap-shredding difficulty rating. Plus: side bets, signature holes, and why "the Walton Way" might be the friendliest welcome we've had yet.

Formby Golf Club Preview: The Course the Sea Is Trying to Take Back
Season 1, Episode 77
Show notes
Formby Golf Club is disappearing — and that's not even the strangest thing about it.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
We're heading to this Lancashire (or is it Merseyside?) links ahead of our round, and there's a lot more going on here than the rankings suggest. Four legendary architects have shaped this course — Willie Park Jr., James Braid, Harry Colt, and a coastal erosion crisis that's already swallowed the original 9th green. By 2085, the sea could be lapping at the 10th tee.
There's also a clubhouse clock tower with a surprising Titanic connection, an Amateur Championship final between two future Ryder Cup captains, and a fully independent ladies' golf club operating entirely inside Formby's own boundary — one of only a handful of setups like it in the country.
In this episode:
- The four architects who built Formby — and the one who's conspicuously missing
- Why the Irish Sea is taking 2.5 metres of this coastline every year
- The clock tower donor with a direct link to the Titanic disaster
- Formby Ladies Golf Club — a complete second course hidden inside the main layout
- Our excitement levels, side bets, and a signature hole challenge before we tee offIf you're new here: we're two mates trying to play all 100 of the UK and Ireland's top-ranked golf courses in 10 years. This is the preview — the full review drops in a few weeks once we've actually played it.

Lanark Golf Club: The Oldest Inland Golf Course in the World (Beyond The Top 100 #2)
Season 1, Episode 76
Show notes
Lanark Golf Club doesn't try to impress you. No grand entrance, no resort gloss — just a golf course that's been played on the same patch of common land since October 1851, making it the oldest inland golf course in the world.
This episode is powered by Fourball Draws - where you can win a fourball on some elite courses for just a fiver - visit fourballs.co.uk and use code TOP100 to buy 2 or more tickets and get one absolutely free!
We sit down with general manager Andy Romer to dig into 175 years of history: Old Tom Morris's £3.10 shilling redesign, James Braid's 1927 refinements (100 years old next year), lost holes buried under the car park, army connections to the Cameronians, and a quietly incredible piece of trivia — Lanark lost the vote to become Gleneagles by a single ballot.
• Why the 7th tee is the moment Lanark finally reveals itself
• The "Cabbages" — a nickname with a 175-year-old explanation
• How Lanark rebuilt its own history from minute books found in a cupboard
• Why this is a "stopover," not a "stay-and-play" course — and why that's exactly the pointIf you're enjoying the show, hit follow — it's the single biggest thing that helps more golfers find us.
