  1. The Matrix (1999): Were We WARNED About AI?! | The VHS Club Ep. 147

    Episode 147

    Show notes

What if The Matrix wasn't science fiction... but a WARNING? 💊🤯

We're continuing our "spooky" month of movies that may have eerily predicted the future, and this week we're plugging into THE MATRIX (1999)!

Back in 1999, the Wachowskis gave us a world where machines controlled humanity, reality wasn't what it seemed, and Keanu Reeves made black trench coats and tiny sunglasses look ridiculously cool.

Fast-forward to 2026, and suddenly some of those ideas feel a little TOO familiar. 😳

Join us as we revisit this iconic sci-fi movie, dig into the behind-the-scenes trivia, debate whether it holds up, and ask the important questions:

💊 Would you take the red pill or the blue pill?

🤖 Did The Matrix predict our AI-powered future?

🕶️ And seriously, how did anyone see through those sunglasses?

  2. Idiocracy (2006): Was This Movie Actually a WARNING?! | The VHS Club Ep. 146

    Episode 146

    Show notes

What happens when the dumbest possible future starts looking a little too familiar? 😂

This week on The VHS Club, we're jumping into the wonderfully ridiculous (and slightly terrifying) world of Idiocracy (2006)!

Directed by Mike Judge and starring Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, and Dax Shepard, Idiocracy follows Joe Bauers, an extraordinarily average guy who wakes up 500 years in the future only to discover that he's suddenly the smartest person alive.

Welcome to a world where Brawndo has what plants crave, Costco is practically its own civilization, and common sense is officially extinct. When this movie came out in 2006, it was a ridiculous satire. But watching it in 2026? Well... we have some questions. 😳

    We're talking about:

    • How a movie about stupidity became a cult classic
    • Brawndo, electrolytes, and the greatest marketing campaign that never existed
    • The absolutely absurd vision of the future
    • Behind-the-scenes trivia and Mike Judge's satirical genius
    • Whether Idiocracy is still a comedy... or slowly becoming a documentary
    • The moments that made us laugh, cringe, and question humanity

Was Idiocracy ahead of its time, or are we all just living in the wrong timeline?

Have you seen Idiocracy? Did you love it, hate it, or find it a little too accurate for comfort?

  3. The Warriors (1979): Can Nat Convince Katie to Watch It?! | The VHS Club Ep. 145

    Episode 145

    Show notes

Tonight on The VHS Club, we're doing things a little differently. And by differently, we mean Katie didn't watch the movie. 😂

In a truly historic turn of events, Nat did her homework, Katie did not, and somehow even Val has already seen this one. WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

This week, we're tackling the 1979 cult classic The Warriors, directed by Walter Hill. But instead of our usual movie review, we're playing a little game called SELL KATIE ON THE WARRIORS!

Nat has one job: convince Katie (and anyone else who hasn't seen it) that The Warriors is an essential piece of '70s cinema that she absolutely needs to watch.

Katie's job? Ask ridiculous questions, challenge the logic of everything, and decide whether this movie is a cinematic masterpiece or just a bunch of grown men in matching outfits running around New York City.

    We're talking about:

    • The story of nine gang members trying to get home through a very hostile NYC
    • The Baseball Furies and some of the most bizarre gang costumes in movie history
    • Why the New York City subway is practically a character of its own
    • Wild behind-the-scenes stories from filming in 1970s New York
    • Iconic lines like "Warriors… come out to play!" and "Can you dig it?!"
    • Why this movie became such a beloved cult classic

And of course, the Tater Tots get to weigh in! Help Nat make her case, challenge her arguments, and decide whether Katie needs to add The Warriors to her watchlist.

By the end of the episode, Katie will deliver her completely uninformed (but very confident) verdict:

Would I actually watch this movie?

  4. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): The Sequel That Changed Everything | The VHS Club Ep. 144

    Episode 143

    Show notes

    Hasta la vista, baby. 🤖

This week on The VHS Club, we're going back to 1991 for one of the biggest, loudest, most technologically groundbreaking sequels ever made: Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as the Terminator, except this time, he's the GOOD guy. Linda Hamilton completely transforms Sarah Connor into one of the most iconic action heroes of the '90s. Edward Furlong makes his film debut as John Connor.

And Robert Patrick spends approximately two and a half hours making us deeply suspicious of anyone wearing a police uniform.

Oh, and there's the T-1000.More than 35 years later, those liquid-metal effects still look ridiculously good.

    We’re talking about:

    • Arnold's switch from villain to protector
    • Linda Hamilton's incredible transformation as Sarah Connor
    • The T-1000 and the visual effects that changed movies
    • John Connor's extremely '90s existence
    • Guns N' Roses, motorcycles, malls, and arcade games
    • The absolutely massive action sequences
    • Why one little thumbs-up emotionally destroyed an entire generation
    • And whether Terminator 2 still deserves its reputation as one of the greatest sequels ever made

Plus, we'll dig into the behind-the-scenes stories, weird trivia, things we completely forgot about the movie, and all the little details you only notice when you revisit it decades later.

So grab your VHS tape, your leather jacket, and preferably something other than a Cyberdyne Systems CPU.

  5. The Commitments (1991): The Greatest Fake Band Ever? | The VHS Club Ep. 143

    Episode 143

    Show notes

Before Once. Before Sing Street. Before every movie about a scrappy group of musicians coming together to form a band…There was The Commitments.

And this band had absolutely NO business sounding this good. 😂

This week on The VHS Club, Katie and Nat are going back to 1991 to revisit The Commitments, Alan Parker’s musical comedy-drama about an ambitious young manager who decides Dublin needs something it apparently didn't know it needed:Soul music.

He assembles a group of working-class Dublin musicians, names them The Commitments, and attempts to turn them into the hardest-working band in Ireland. There’s just one small problem: they can barely stand each other.

    We’re talking about:

    • The absolutely incredible performances
    • How a bunch of young musicians became The Commitments
    • Dublin, soul music, and the movie’s very Irish sense of humor
    • A soundtrack packed with classics like “Mustang Sally” and “Try a Little Tenderness”
    • A band held together by approximately zero emotional stability
    • The stories behind the movie and its unusual casting process
    • Why The Commitments became such a beloved cult classic
    • And, most importantly: Is this one of the greatest fictional movie bands ever?

Plus, we’ll have behind-the-scenes trivia, favorite moments, questionable decisions, tangents, and all the nostalgia you’d expect from The VHS Club.

Before Pretty Woman made her a star, and before she became one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood… Julia Roberts was in a movie called Satisfaction. And somehow, we’re watching it. 😂

This week on The VHS Club, Katie and Nat are going back to 1988 to revisit Satisfaction, starring Justine Bateman, Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson, Trini Alvarado, and Britta Phillips.

The movie follows an all-girl rock band called The Mystery as they head to a beach resort for the summer, land a gig at a nightclub, navigate romances and questionable decisions, and try to figure out what comes next.

Basically: young musicians + summer vacation + Liam Neeson + the late ’80s. What could possibly go wrong?

    We’re talking about:
