Third Impact Anime Podcast

From the mad scientists at Deaf Crocodile, the legend rises again!

Sully and Austin welcome Dennis Bartok and Craig Rogers to the show to talk about their upcoming release of Toei Animation's 1981 TV Special, Frankenstein: Legend of Terror! Not seen since a very old VHS release from Harmony Gold decades ago, Deaf Crocodile has reanimated the corpse of this long dormant anime adaptation of the Mary Shelly classic that has shockingly little to do with the Marvel Comic it was intended to be based on? Listen to our chat about that and more, including Belladonna of Sadness (Dennis and Craig worked on that release for Cinelicious Pictures) and Deaf Crocodile's other anime (for now) Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space.

Thanks so much to Dennis and Craig for coming on the show! Snag your pre-order now for Frankenstein: Legend of Terror today!

Hello, universe! Returning guest Tim Eldred joins us to talk about his upcoming project with CREATORVC, Icons of Anime, a documentary helmed by Tim all about the history of anime and its impact in the west. Tim has been doing a media blitz to get the word out about the documentary's survey which will help shape the vision of the project. The doc will cover all the basics, but the survey is how you can voice what specific angles you'd like Tim to explore. You can find the link here on the official Icons of Anime website.

Last time we did a trivia show, it was to celebrate 150 episodes of Third Impact Anime. This time, we're doing it just for fun, and because Bill finally built up a new stockpile of mind-melting anime trivia questions to stump his fellow co-hosts-- and stump he did.

Bill, Austin, and Tori are joined by returning friend of the show and new trivia victim, our pal Kory from the Taiiku Podcast Network. You can hear Kory on numerous podcasts including Taiiku Podcast (sports anime), Taiiku Movies (movies and not anime), and Manga in Your Ears (for manga, in your ears). Thanks so much to Kory for coming back on the show!

Tori and Austin chat about Ibashocon 2026, a convention that wrapped up several months ago, but with us (err, Austin) being so busy preparing panels for Animazement, and recording a bunch of episodes that are STILL not out yet, this one took a while to release. We chat about the con, the great artists' alley, really fun panels (both our own and others'), the delightful idolfest, the cosplay fashion show, the Gachiakuta cast panel, and the beauty of a convention built on a "community first" attitude.

Back in 2023, we had the pleasure of hosting the developers of the indie RPG Quartet on the show for a bonus interview. Well now, the game is out, and they're back!

Ryan chats once again with the folks from Something Classic games to talk about the game, their roles in creating it, the fan response, DLC plans, magic sausages, and more!

A sincere thank you to Peter, Patrick, and Tyler for coming on the show once again. All music comes from the Quartet soundtrack.

You can purchase Quartet on Steam right now, and be on the look out for the forth-coming PlayStation and Switch ports.

About Quartet: A series of unlikely train robberies. A mysterious deck of cards. A fleet of deadly airships. An accidental mage. Choose from four stories, in any order, and discover how they intertwine in this turn-based RPG.

Christmas, Christmas time is here, time for ASS, and time for cheer! Austin, Tori, and Bill gather together to exchange the gift of anime with internet friends and strangers alike with another Anime Secret Santa! Kory Taiiku-Claus has kindly delivered a collection of delightful presents under the tree for us to review.

This year, our gifts are Astra Lost in Space, Godzilla Singular Point, Paprika, Alien Nine, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Odd Taxi.

Thanks so much to each one of our Santas for these excellent picks, and of course to Kory and the Taiiku Podcast for arranging it all.

Have you seen any of our picks? What do you think of them? Is Bill right to be a Trigger-disliker? Let us know by sending us an email at thirdimpactanime@gmail.com and we'll discuss it on the show.

Coming soon to a newsstand (meaning your mailbox or email inbox) near you; Anime Herald Magazine!

Sully and Austin sit down with Samantha Ferreira, the founder and editor-in-chief of Anime Herald, to talk about her journey towards creating a brand-new anime print publication in an era where anime magazines aren't exactly plentiful anymore. Samantha tells us how she came to found Anime Herald 15 years ago, how bringing the website to print has been a long-held dream of hers, how she assembled an amazing team of writers, artists, and editors to collaborate with, and what readers can expect from this exciting new era of anime commentary in printed form.

You can pre-order (or maybe even order by the time you're reading this) a copy of the magazine here.

Thanks to Samantha for being on the show! You can connect with her on Bluesky and on her website https://www.animeherald.com.

At long last, after podcasting for 8 years and counting (wow...), we have finally gone and done it; we're reviewing some Mobile Suit Gundam. Since we are very sensible and reasonable folk at TIA, we thought we would start at the very beginning. Just kidding, we picked an entry that sounded interesting to us after Austin and Bill had independently been dabbling in various Gundam entries for the past several years. Although to be fair, some people claim that the OVA we're reviewing in this episode, Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team, is a solid entry point into the franchise for beginners, but is that actually true? Let's test that theory!

We're happy to welcome Coop back to the show! Coop has been on the show a number of times to talk about anime conventions, but never to actually review a series with us before. As a giant robot aficionado, we could think of no better friend of the show to have on for our first leap into the world of Gundam. Coop regularly writes for Anime News Network, including the weekly This Week in Anime Column, and contributes to releases from Discotek and AnimEigo. Check out Coop's work, social media, and podcasts here!

Have you seen 08th MS Team? What do you think of it? Does it live up to the hype? Do you think it's a good entry point to Gundam or not? Let us know by sending us an email at thirdimpactanime@gmail.com and we'll discuss it on the show.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's the return of our chronically neglected sub show, Kotatsu Corner! Join us as we gather around a tiny table to chat about not-anime. Okay, maybe a little anime. Austin, Bill, and returning special guest Drew from Sideburns & Cigarettes: A Lupin III Podcast join together to chat about Superman (2025) but not before Bill and Drew talk about one of their other favorite TMS anime, Detective Conan, and its recent brand-new English dub.

Another great year of Animazement has come and gone and Bill, Austin, and Tori are here to tell you all about it. Pay no mind that the convention ended almost a month and a half ago! This episode was a beast to edit, and for good reason! Not only do we talk about our panels, the cool sights and sounds we experienced, the good food we ate, and merch we bought, but we also had not one or two, but FIVE special guests join us for various segments throughout this episode to talk about some of the cool things they saw and did over the weekend.

Going through them in appearance order, you may know a few of them from being on the show before or encountering their work on the internet in various places; we have returning friends Coop (@RiderStrike) and Maddy (@hyakushiki0087) back on the show but also Megan (@brainchild129), Cody (@codyanskaya), and Kurt (@GreatSG) join us for the first time!

Coop, Megan, and Maddy travelled from far off lands (the Midwest and the west coast) to see if the rumors about Animazement being "good" were true. Listen to find out! Coop regularly writes for Anime News Network, contributes to releases from Discotek and AnimEigo, and does some podcasty stuff from time to time. Maddy appears as a regular contributor to Giant Robot FM. Megan is a frequent panelist and writes for Anime Feminist as well as her own blog, The Manga Test Drive!

Cody is a long-time Animazement head but joins us to talk about their debut panel Rotund Mecha Gentleman, something we really got a kick out of and I'm sure you all will too.

Kurt is the mastermind behind panels such as the Awesomely Bad Japanese Music Videos and Ugly Giant Robots Arbitrarily Ranked but we had him on specifically to talk about his brand new endeavor The Anime Home Video Museum, a audio visual odyssey through the history of anime on home video. It's a heck of a thing and I know you guys will love to hear Kurt talk about it.

Did you attend Animazement this year? If not, did you attend one of the other 900 conventions happening over Memorial Day weekend? Let us know by sending us an email at thirdimpactanime@gmail.com and we'll discuss it on the show.

• 00:00:00 - Live from the hotel room on Sunday afternoon, it's The Nagahomies! (Austin, Tori, Coop, Maddy, and Megan!)
• 00:19:23 - The actual con-versation starts! (Lots of autograph and panel talk)
• 00:39:48 - Cody joins us to talk about Rotund Mecha Gentlemen and their general thoughts about the con
• 00:59:39 - The con-versation continues! (Mostly on the Aimi concert)
• 01:04:38 - Kurt joins us to talk about the origins and the madness of The Anime Home Video Museum!
• 01:35:59 - Extra talking about the AHVM, Tori's horrors in the horror panel, most notable cosplays, Austin talks about his panels (10 Anime Movies You May Have Missed and Road of Resistance: 15 Years of BABYMETAL), Bill and Austin talk about being invited onto a Trivia Knights game show, reflecting on the Masao Maruyama panel, Bill playing Mario Golf, and talking about what we did (and didn't) buy.
• 02:19:00 - Wrap up, recommendations, and social media plugs!

On January 16th, 2025, the world lost one of the greats; American filmmaker David Lynch passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a decades-long career of truly unique films and television series' including Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and many more. Many of us at Third Impact are big fans of Lynch's work, and Sully wanted to take some time to reflect on his life, his art, and his influence on various anime and Japanese video games over the years. Joining us are two returning friends, Drew and Emma of Sideburns and Cigarettes: A Lupin the Third Podcast who are also big Lynch fans.

We dedicate this episode of David's life and his work.

Honey Flash! Sully and returning guest Salvatore (@RetroSofa) sit down with VA and dub director David Wald and OG Cutie Honey dub actress Jessica Calvello to discuss their work on the recent English dub for the 2004 OVA Re: Cutie Honey from Discotek! Topics include how Go Nagai chose Jessica for the role of Honey, how dubbing has changed since Jessica first took the role in the 90s for New Cutie Honey, and what makes Honey so special all these years later.

An important note: This was recorded a few months ago, prior to David's statementon Crunchyroll opening his fan mail without his knowledge and dispersing the contents to their staff. Upon David's request, we didn't go back and add any additional mention of this in the episode, but we did want to state here in text that we are deeply disappointed in Crunchyroll's behavior and we encourage anyone listening or reading this to support David and call upon Crunchyroll to do better.

Time stamps:

• 00:00:00 - Intro and Jessica's long history with the character
