Tommy’s picks included The Rolling Stones’ Some Girls, Led Zeppelin’s In Through the Out Door, R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People, Til Tuesday’s Welcome Home, and Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Mark’s picks included The Blues Brothers’ Briefcase Full of Blues, Run-DMC’s Tougher Than Leather, Johnny Cash’s Live at Folsom Prison, and Brownsville Station’s self-titled album. Michael’s picks included the Tron: Legacy soundtrack by Daft Punk, KISS’s Crazy Nights, ELO’s Discovery, and REO Speedwagon’s High Infidelity, as well as the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack. The conversation also touched on the subjective nature of music and the joy of discovering new bands later in life.

You Ask Us The Band Questions — Why Some Bands Never Got Bigger and More!
Show notes
Episode 686. Michael and Tommy conducted a “hit-and-run” episode of their podcast “Three Sides of the Coin” without guests Mark or Lisa, focusing on music-related questions from fans instead of KISS-specific content. They discussed six audience questions about various bands and musical topics, including why bands like House of Lords, Brighton Rock, and Michael Schenker never reached greater success despite having great music and live performances. The conversation covered factors such as timing, record label support, management quality, booking agents, regional differences, and visual presentation affecting a band’s success in the music industry. Tommy also shared his experience attending a Sex Pistols concert with Starcrawler as the opening act, noting that the original members performed well and the audience was primarily middle-aged fans rather than punk enthusiasts.

Opening Bands – How They Get the Gig, Great Bands We Saw, Not So Great Bands, Who Opened for KISS
Show notes
Episode 682. The Three Sides of the Coin podcast discussed opening bands, focusing on how opening acts are selected for tours and sharing experiences with both good and bad opening bands at KISS concerts and other shows. Mark shared stories about seeing Rush and Iron Maiden perform recently, noting how these bands that once opened for KISS are now headlining sold-out arena tours with elaborate productions. The discussion covered the business aspects of tour support, record label involvement in booking opening acts, and how bands like Faster Pussycat could be dropped from tours when album sales declined. Michael, Mark and Lisa Martini exchanged memories of memorable opening acts including Wasp, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and various bands from KISS tours throughout the 1980s, discussing what made some opening performances stand out and others fall flat. They also touched on how tour frequency can impact a band’s marketability and the challenges of maintaining fan interest over time.

Episode 679. This episode we are joined by Bobby Getchell from Dressed To Kill to discuss the Spirit of 76 Expo, a charity event, to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, featuring a full-scale recreation of the KISS Destroyer stage, set to debut on September 12, 2026, exactly 50 years after the original tour ended. It was a years-long effort to build the stage using original blueprints provided by the original stage designer Mark Ravitz.
The event is described as a 1970s-themed expo with multiple stages, vendors, and special guests, including Felipe Rose of the Village People.
We also discussed the rarity of the KISS Destroyer stage and its significance to KISS fans, with Bobby revealing a previously unknown detail from the blueprints about a planned flying platform for Gene Simmons.
We are also joined by Russell Dannecker and Phil Diehl.

Best of the Best, Our Favorite Greatest Hits Albums – Do We Even Care About Best Of Albums
Show notes
Episode 678. This episode of “Three Sides of the Coin” focused on a discussion about greatest hits albums, their purpose, and their relevance in the modern era. Michael, Tommy, and Mark shared their personal experiences with greatest hits albums, highlighting how they served as introductions to bands’ catalogs in the pre-internet age. They discussed specific albums like Deep Purple’s “Deepest Purple,” Black Sabbath’s “We Sold Our Souls for Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and KISS’s “Double Platinum,” analyzing their track listings and impact. The conversation also touched on how live albums often functioned as greatest hits collections. The hosts agreed that with the advent of streaming services and playlists, traditional greatest hits albums have less utility today.

Play Along – We Pick the 3 Songs That Best Represent KISS From Each Era of the Band
Show notes
Episode 672. This is a great episode for you to play along with us. Mark comes up with a topic at the very last minute… pick three songs that best represent KISS from each era of the band… but, you can only pick one song from an album. First we start with deciding what the eras are, it is more than just makeup and no makeup. It is more than just originals and replacements. Let us know if you agree with the eras we defined and of course let us know what you think of the songs each of us select. This should be good for some discussions.
