  1. Episode 408: THE DEVILS (1971) with Lauren Haun

    Show notes

Teens are horny for Oliver Reed.

Read that again. In 2026, young people are positively insatiable with thirst for the deceased actor and icon of Lad culture Oliver Reed. And it’s all thanks to a new rerelease of Ken Russell’s THE DEVILS.

To celebrate the frankly crazy reception it’s had on its release by Warner Bros. Clockwork, Lauren Haun is back in the habit (literally) to remark on the content, characters, crows, and locations featured in THE DEVILS.

  2. Episode 407: VIY (1967)

    Show notes

VIY is a cult classic inspired by Ukrainian folktale, dubbed “the Soviet Union’s first horror film,” and it’s full of exactly the kind of wild, awe-inspiring creativity you’d expect of a moral tale from behind the Iron Curtain!

On this episode, we gush over VIY’s vibrant final act like everybody always does, but we also dig into what makes the slow start special. Long story short: It’s PROBABLY got something more running under the surface than coffin-surfin’ witches and vodka-drunk villagers.

Stick around for Cody’s Noteys, where the rest of us end up drinking too much booze in order to survive the night… like any good Cossack!

  3. Episode 406: DRAG ME TO HELL (2009)

    Show notes

Sam Raimi got done with SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007) and was like ‘time to make the meanest movie possible’. On this episode, we’re dragging the absolute living DISCUSSION out of each other about DRAG ME TO HELL: The fear of a millennial workforce, Alison Lohman doing her thing, and whether or not Christine ‘deserves’ what she gets (including one of the most talked-about endings in horror).

Then, we’re finally succumbing to social pressure and talking about Taco Bell in Cody’s Noteys.

  4. Episode 405: POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING (2016)

    Show notes

In the early 2000s, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer were among the first to bridge the gap from late night sketch comedy to internet virality. POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING is kind of a culmination of that journey and the jewel in that crown.

POPSTAR is both powered by the “SNL Digital Shorts”ification of comedy and chained to it. Its ratatat jokes, absurd gags, and 2016-ness have earned POPSTAR certified cult classic status.

It’s also a product of pre-Trump American cinema (Harry calls it “the last Obama movie”), so there’s a foreign, almost naïve optimism to it. The largely unburdened storytelling we used to take for granted just a decade ago.

The kind of playful, surprisingly genuine sentiment that feels like an exception now, in a world where every day is dominated by some new world-shaking terror.

In this episode, we’re looking at POPSTAR as a defining cultural document of the 2010s, a product of the optimistic internet age, as a star-studded showcase, and as a collection of some really fucking funny gags.

Thanks to our good friend Kyle for joking that we should cover this movie.

  5. Episode 404: THE CONJURING (2013) with Dan Nagan

    Show notes

When Warner Bros. released James Wan’s THE CONJURING, audiences ate up its pared-down setting and classic jump scares to the tune of more than $300 million. As of this episode, it’s the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time. But hey, it’s a horror movie from the 2010s. It can’t actually be THAT good anymore, right?

Dan Nagan comes back to help us pick and poke at what still works here, what definitely doesn’t, and the forgiving hand with which it treats the cute fraudsters at the heart of its story.

  6. Episode 403: SUSPIRIA (1977) with Velma Rent

    Show notes

SUSPIRIA is cooking — A BIG CAULDRON OF INNOCENT BALLET GIRLS, that is!

You’ve never seen anything like Dario Argento’s 1977 giallo classic… and yet, it’s so immediately evocative that Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 spiritual remake had no choice but to go a different direction with its visuals. You simply can’t outdo what SUSPIRIA is doing!

With Velma Rent, Trylon board member and longtime volunteer, we’re hopping into the razor wire pile that is this movie’s legacy (without looking)! We get into the feminism, the Roman Empire, the inimitable style, Jessica Harper’s ‘made-for-horror’ expressivity, and more. Turns out there’s a VERY GOOD REASON why they’re all talking like that!

  7. Episode 402: JE TU IL ELLE (1974)

    Show notes

    “Foolhardy.”

That’s how director Chantal Akerman described her 1974 film JE TU IL ELLE, which she also wrote and starred in. Her partially autobiographical character drifts at an emotional distance from herself, rearranging her room and binge eating and drafting letters to lost love, for the first 30 minutes.

On paper, it sounds pretty flat. Those extended scenes of mundanity are punctuated by listless narration and a couple precious human interactions. Her hookup with a random trucker and her return to a former lover give the story structure, but they also give us a window into the young woman’s emotional state that her own voiceover narration tends to elide.

For a couple of us, JE TU IL ELLE (“I, YOU, HE, SHE”) is the first time we’ve discussed Akerman. It’s as exploratory and halting and caveat-ridden as you’d imagine, but honestly, on this episode of Trylove, these four straight white guys talk not completely stupidly about this groundbreaking work of queer feminist filmmaking.

  8. Episode 401: THE LONG DAY CLOSES (1992) with Abbie Phelps

    Show notes

The wistful, self-aware reflections highlighted in movies like THE LONG DAY CLOSES earned Terence Davies the unique moniker of ‘cinematic poet’. He grew up Catholic, discovered his queerness young, and came of age during British postwar austerity, but it’s not so much about his upbringing as it is about his recollection of his upbringing. It makes sense when you watch it.

Abbie Phelps designed the delightful poster that promoted a short Terence Davies series at the Trylon, and she also happens to love this movie, so we’ve welcomed her back to the show to dig into what makes it special, what ‘cinematic poetry’ actually means, the power of music in communicating memory, and what people misunderstand about THE LONG DAY CLOSES!

    Show notes

This episode was originally published in December 2022. It was republished September 13, 2026, to coincide with its run at the Trylon as part of the "Taking the Scenic Route" series.

Returning guest Seth Zarate grabs his trumpet to blow down the Walls of Jericho! It’s the movie that came up with the thing where a lady hitchhikes by showing a bit of her bare leg instead of pointing out her thumb!

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is also a funny early romantic comedy that, in lieu of a balance between “rom” and “com,” often leans into its uncomfortable scenarios without giving the audience a clear indication of how they’re supposed to feel about its antics.

While PSYCHO III does little to upset the apple cart of the series — Norman Bates is dodging suspicion for another murder, another precocious blonde rents a room at the Bates Motel — it’s got a certain gaudy, beautiful ‘80s sleaze that opens a couple interesting pathways for our intrepid Oedipus. And who better to discuss all that than Kelly Krantz, noted Perkins stan and sleaze fanatic?

Unknown numbers of movies were lost in the early years of Mexico’s film industry, especially before the country’s cinematic Golden Age in the 1940s and 1950s. But a growing number of them have been rediscovered, restored, and rereleased by Permanencia Voluntaria — and they include Fernando de Fuentes’s EL FANTASMA DEL CONVENTO (THE PHANTOM OF THE MONASTERY), a subversive Gothic horror from that weird post-revolution, pre-war gap.

It’s kind of a thin movie on the face of it, but in this discussion, we pull a lot from it. There’s Mexico’s growing prominence on the world stage, economic favor from the US during World War II, Catholic guilt, and a movie industry reflecting how a nation charted an unknown future. Check it out!

Lured by the sheen of capitalist excess in the pages of Good Housekeeping, siblings Rosa and Enrique make the dangerous trek across the US/Mexico border, only to find the dream lives they were promised are nearly impossible for people like them to achieve.

EL NORTE director Gregory Nava traveled to Minneapolis in August 2026 for special screenings of the 4K remaster at the Trylon. Several screenings included introductions and Q\&A sessions of his breakout film, bringing it back into the spotlight as it finds new relevance amid the punishing immigration crackdown of Operation Metro Surge and other ICE operations across the nation.

    Show notes

With STREETWISE, director Martin Bell, producer Cheryl McCall, and photographer Mary Ellen Mark created a singular documentary, one that gave voice to Seattle’s street children, rather than pumping in a ton of voiceover and context.

The fact is that Seattle was hit pretty hard in the 1970s, with unemployment reaching as high as 13% in the early ‘80s (three times the national average) and weakening labor power driving more and more people out on the street. Gen X was barely coming of age when many of them saw the lives their hippie parents led — one where post-World War II affluence afforded them a safety net while they railed against ‘the Man’ — and rejected it wholesale, often choosing a life on the streets instead of falling in line.

The affected youths in STREETWISE are cynical, strong-willed, wise well beyond their years, and, in an uncomfortable way, wildly entertaining. It’s impossible not to empathize, even though our perspective is inherently voyeuristic.

Preach (Glynn Turman) and Cochise (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) are fast friends and comrades in Chicago’s notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects. Like Monte and Schultz, they spend their days rabble-rousing, chasing girls, losing friends to senseless violence, and the unfairness and inequality that defined the African-American experience in the 1960s.

Beyond its box office success, COOLEY HIGH inspired a generation of artists to share stories that balanced compelling drama with the real issues facing black Americans for decades to come.

    Show notes

We’re no strangers to Orson Welles on this here podcast… Or are we? Welles first-timer* Tony Wagner returns for a doozy documentary/film/essay from the inimitable auteur himself!

Orson Welles was hired to direct a documentary his friend had filmed on an art forger. But Welles, mired in the endless production of what would become his posthumous THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND (2018), couldn’t let it go there. His version expands the scope to include the forger’s biographer, the forger’s biographer’s forgeries, Howard Hughes, and a large-scale interrogation “about trickery, fraud, and lies.”

With Tony, we’re giving F FOR FAKE the T for Trylove treatment, discussing the criticism of art criticism on display, whether or not it’s possible to REALLY criticize this movie, its similarities to YouTube essay culture, and more.

  19. Episode 391: THE RED SPECTACLES (1987) with Matt Clark

    Show notes

THE RED SPECTACLES is one entry in a long-running multimedia dystopian sci-fi series by the guy who made GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995). It’s one of the wildest, most tone-swingy things we’ve ever seen at the Trylon. It almost feels impossible to fully encircle, one of those flicks that takes hairpin turns just when you think you’ve got a handle on it.

Amidst the confusion, our friend and film writer Matt Clark picks up on some elements that can be traced to Japanese crime films. That’s as good an entry point as any into THE RED SPECTACLES, but we’re doing our usual thing and poking around the edges of this weird movie to see how close we can get to its elusive center!

  20. Episode 390: VANISHING POINT (1971)

    Show notes

A mythologized decade, a souped-up Challenger, and the man behind the wheel are running out of time in Richard C. Sarafian’s 1971 amphetamine-fueled road trip movie VANISHING POINT!

With 15 hours to make it from Denver to San Francisco in a new white Dodge Challenger, the former cop/driver/motorcyclist/boyfriend actually takes up a bunch of stops. Each detour exposes him to another unique character or group: A snake-catcher selling vipers to desert Pentecostals; fellow drivers looking to prove their mettle; a dead-end hippie commune; gay hustlers hitching a ride. With the help of police and media attention, Kowalski becomes more than a desperate washed-up has-been on the run — for a public turning the page on the 60s, he becomes nothing less than an American hero.

We’re kicking off the Trylon’s big summer program by discussing this cult classic as a time capsule and as an action movie, and figure out how it fits among “end of an era” films.

Note: We recorded this episode before the Trylon started showing the standard cut of VANISHING POINT, so we watched the extended cut, which contains a particular scene we think is pretty important to the point of the movie. We’ve noted the difference in the discussion.
