Watching My Dad's Movies
My dad, Barry Corbin, has been working in Hollywood as a character actor since be played opposite John Travolta in 1980's Urban Cowboy. Since then he's worked with legends on masterpieces (like the Coen Brother's No Country For Old Men) and with legends on disasters (like Sidney Poitier's Ghost Dad). Each week I watch one of his movies, and then interview my dad about his experience on it. Then I sit down with my co-host Nick Casalini and we talk about the movie and our lives. Season One starts September 21, 2026! New episode each Monday. Now... go watch a movie!

It Takes Two: George Newbern, 80s Wackiness, Manure Jokes & My Dad
Season 1, Episode 7
Show notes
My dad, Barry Corbin, plays a high-powered manure salesman in the bonkers 1988 comedy It Takes Two! In this episode I talk to him about dialing up the funny, George Newbern’s charm, filming in creepy locations, and why this film had a hard time finding its footing. And no, this is not the Olson Twins movie of the same title. And yes, Nick Casalini does in fact join me for a friendly debate about whether it was bad-good or bad-bad, what elements of it actually worked, and a theory about how Newbern was maybe, just maybe, a few degrees away from being the next Tom Hanks.

Dead and Buried: Pranking Robert Englund, A Hit In France, Horror & My Dad
Season 1, Episode 6
Show notes
My dad, Barry Corbin, plays a townsman in the 1981 underrated horror flick Dead and Buried! In this episode we talk about why he said yes to a part so small, how this movie bombed in the US but was a hit in France, why he never actually watched it, which horror films he enjoys and how he pranked Freddy Kruger (and some incredibly serious Shakesperian actors). As always, Nick Casalini enters the chat to discuss our take on this now-appreciated gore-fest, why it had the pedigree to succeed, why it did not, and how I used to kinda sorta, um… worship Freddy Kruger. Happy Halloween!

Nothing in Common: Tom Hanks, Jackie Gleason, Gary Marshall & My Dad
Season 1, Episode 5
Show notes
My dad, Barry Corbin, plays one of Tom Hanks’s father figures in Gary Marshall’s 1989 dramedy Nothing In Common. In this episode I talk to him about helping Tom Hank’s get into the actor’s union, what it was like working with the young superstar at this important juncture in his career, how he fine-tuned his absurd character, and why Jackie Gleason refused to ride in a black limousine. And of course, if you know anything about the plot and themes of this film, we talk about fatherhood and father figures. Plus, Nick Casalini joins me to get deep about his own relationship with his father, why this movie strikes a poignant chord, and why perfume commercials are one of the last true art forms. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

In this episode I talk to him about befriending his co-star Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder’s on-set basketball skills, improvising with comedic geniuses, what it was like filming at a real prison with actual inmates, the cast filled with amazing character actors, why he loved auditioning for Poitier, and the time everyone had to leave set because Pryor threatened to shoot a crew member. We also touch on drug use, the depressive side of funny people, and the time he introduced me to Pryor shortly before his death. As always, Nick Casalini joins me to talk about the movie, the stars, how incredible it was for my dad to go toe-to-toe with two of the funniest actors of all time, and that time I didn’t know I got arrested.

Ghost Dad: Cosby, Poitier, Lil Batman & My Dad
Season 1, Episode 3
Show notes
My dad, Barry Corbin, played Bill Cosby’s boss in Sidney Poitier’s Ghost Dad! In this episode I talk to him about being in the great Poitier’s rolodex, why he prefers working with directors who are also actors, how I distracted Cosby on set, what it was like showing up to work with me dressed as Batman, and why Cosby used to be my hero. As always, I also sit down with my friend and co-host Nick Casalini to talk about where this movie fits into my personal story, why the comedy just doesn’t work, how hard it is to watch Cosby now, my dad’s insane accent, and the nature of a bad movie that’s good versus a bad movie that’s bad.

Urban Cowboy: Travolta, Texas, Swayze & My Dad
Season 1, Episode 1
Show notes
My dad, Barry Corbin, broke into Hollywood as a character actor in 1980 playing John Travolta’s lovable uncle in Urban Cowboy! In our very first episode of Watching My Dad’s Movies, I talk to him about the audition process, meeting and hanging out with Travolta at the height of his fame, the jump from theater to film, a young Patrick Swayze tagging along with his mother Patsy as she choreographed the movie’s amazing dances, and what kind of support my dad had from his parents. Plus, joining me all season long will be my co-host and pal Nick Casalini - the two of us sit down to discuss the poetic power of a mechanical bull, the brilliant performances, Travolta’s star power, my personal favorite quotes from the movie, and what it means for me to follow in my father’s footsteps.

Season One - Trailer Trailer
Season 1
Show notes
Welcome to Watching My Dad's Movies! The podcast where I, Christopher Corbin, watch all the movies my dad, Barry Corbin, has acted in. And as you'll see he's been in tons of them. Every episode I interview him about these movies (like No Country For Old Men, Urban Cowboy and Killers of the Flower Moon). He tells some crazy Hollywood stories and I get to learn about his life and career (like the time he had to leave the set of Stir Crazy because Richard Pryor was ready to shoot a crew member). Then I talk with my friend Nick Casalini about each film, how it impacted us personally and where I was at in my life when my dad worked on it. Each episode weaves these two conversations together as I do my best to honor my dad's career and, at times, poke fun at him (and his wigs).
Tune in to hear about Tom Hanks, John Candy, Gene Wilder, Dom DeLuise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton, Adrien Brody, Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers, John Travolta and so many more. Plus Nick and I share all kinds of personal stories and explore how each movie relates to our lives.
Episodes drop every Monday starting September 21, 2026.
