Wax Episodic | Widow's Bay and Lanterns

Very cool to get a surprise Halloween episode of Welcome to Derry, expanding on the lore of the Shokopiwah tribe and how they came to contain the evil entity IT in the Western Woods. We thought this story had some significant additions that made us like Welcome to Derry season 1 even more. Join Shawn and Jason as we talk it out!

We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series:

• Widow’s Bay (Apple TV): The multiple-Emmy-winning horror comedy show about a cursed New England island town and the befuddled mayor trying to bring tourism to it that somehow manages to be charmingly quirky, creepy as hell, and laugh-out-loud funny. Covered by me and Karen.
• Lanterns (HBO): The prestige TV-meets-comics, gritty, small-town crime show featuring galactic space cops. Covered by me, Kirk, and Jim.
• Severance (Apple TV): A mind-bending show where office workers’ minds are severed into two selves, one that exists only at work, and the other only outside. It’s beautiful, brilliant, funny, gripping, mysterious, thrilling, thought-provoking, and meticulously crafted in every way. Hosted by Jason and Karen’s innies.
• Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
• Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen.
• Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Randy.

Welcome to Widow’s Bay everybody! Karen and I are overjoyed that so many of you expressed interest in us covering this. And what a pleasure to be immersing ourselves in the world of this wonderfully funny, smart, creepy, kooky, multiple Emmy-winning series.

This episode in particular won Emmys for best writing and directing, and it shows. This is one of those pilots that just nails it, hooking you in right away. And Matthew Rhys’ performance in particular is brilliant. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the podcast as Karen and I talk it out!

Wow, this slow-burn show picked up the pace in the second half of season three, and we’re totally digging it (pun!). Thrilling to see so many questions answered, and new ones raised, and to find out that the final season isn’t too far away — July 9, 2007! Join Jason, Veronica, and Amelie as we get into all the details of the second half of Silo season 3, maybe our favorite segment of this series so far.

We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series:

• IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, with Pennywise stalking the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elm Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed.

What’s next for Wax Episodic?

As I (Jason) mentioned on the podcast, the plan is to go on hiatus for awhile, and come back for the new HBO show, Lanterns, premiering August 16.

Lanterns is an upcoming new superhero/detective series, but I’m most excited about it because of where it’s airing (because HBO has been producing high-quality shows for years), and also the kick-ass bunch of creators and actors who are involved: Lanterns is headed up by Damon Lindelof (LOST, The Leftovers, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective), and Tom King (Mister Miracle, The Vision), stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), and co-stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle).

Premise: Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers. The series follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, which Jordan believes is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.

P.S. There’s a chance we’ll be back with a surprise or two before Lanterns. Either way keep us in your feed and we’ll talk to you soon!

Lanterns opens strong with an episode that manages to slip in a ton of expositional Green Lantern lore, an intriguing small town mystery, a bunch colorful characters all pushing against each other’s edges (with some fantastic actors playing them), all while asking some deeper questions about human nature, and even throwing in a few jokes that actually made us laugh. Yeah, we’re in!

We’re back for another new show! Yes, this show is about members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force whose members wear rings that give them powers (and we love that). But there’s a lot more about this series that has us intrigued. Like, why is it also apparently a gritty murder mystery set in rural Nebraska? And what does it mean that HBO, the king of prestige TV, picked it up, with three legendary writers at the helm: Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (LOST), and Tom King (The Vision)?

That’s more than enough to have us—Jason, Kirk, and Jim—super excited for Lanterns. Join us for a spoiler-lite introduction to the series, followed by a more detailed dive into the trailer that recently debuted at Comic-Con.

But some wonder if they’ve been lied to about why this silo was created and why they’re there.

The season really went out in grand fashion, with Innie and Outie Mark in a fierce argument with one another, a boisterous in-office marching band celebrating Mark’s completion of the Cold Harbor file, and a climactic battle between Drummond, Lorne of Mammalian’s Nurturable, and Mark, among other things. I mean, the unpredictable whimsy of this show is sublime :) And of course Karen and I had a blast talking it out, as always. Enjoy!

We sincerely thank all of you who followed along with us for Severance! Many of you guys have asked for coverage for years now, and I’m really glad we finally got around to it. It was a blast, and we appreciate you listening along, and special thanks to those of you who wrote in and sent voice messages. Super fun. Can’t wait to watch along with you guys for season 3!

So much heartbreak in this episode, between Gretchen breaking things off with Innie Dylan, Burt and Irving separating, Mark suffering and frustrated, and we even felt bad for Helena being oppressed by her father and Milchick being humiliated by Drummond (devour feculence, Drummond!). Lots to talk about, and I (Jason) am happy to be joined by my good friend Eric this week, with whom it was a pleasure to podcast. Karen’s on vacay (not in Widow’s Bay) and she’ll be back for the finale!

Other shows we cover on this podcast:

We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted shows:

• Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), and with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
• Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It’s sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen!
• IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, Pennywise stalks the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elme Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed.

Of course as we suspected, viewing this episode through our analytical podcaster’s lens we found a lot to dig into and appreciate about this episode and it’s implications for Harmony Cobel’s character, the series in general, and what it says about the real world. Still wasn’t our favorite though.

What a surprising, beautiful, romantic, tragic, f#$ked up episode this week. We found it especially impactful seeing (and feeling) Mark and Gemma’s relationship and life together come alive onscreen, and then so sad to see it destroyed by Lumon.
