Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down): Down V, My Bandmates & Why Big Riffs Are Forever
Season 1, Episode 37
Show notes
Rifflord Kirk Windstein of Crowbar redefined sonic gravity with his heavyweight riffs and serrated vocals, creating a unique sound that has now connected with a whole new generation of heavy music fans.
Kirk's band Down is a collision of huge personalities: Philip Anselmo (Pantera), Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Crowbar) and Pat Bruders (Crowbar). Since their landmark debut NOLA, the band has created savage blues and straight-up filth. As they approach their first new album in years, Down V, Christina explores the personal stories behind the music: the alchemy that made everything possible.

Emma Ruth Rundle vs. Becky Laverty: These Killing Times, Roadburn Festival Ethos & Slowpoke
Season 1, Episode 47
Show notes
Emma Ruth Rundle is a musician and artist who has just released These Killing Times, an exquisite new record with a cast of characters that is large-sounding, intricate, provocative and emotional. Emma redefined heaviness for her longtime pal Becky Laverty, co-booker of the iconic Roadburn Festival, way back in 2017 when her solo show at the festival brought the house down. Nine years later, Becky has been an intimate part of the making of These Killing Times, and has recently launched a new zine called Slowpoke, sharing untold stories from exceptional visual artists and musicians.
In this expansive conversation, we discuss the pair's close friendship, the birth of the record, the role of feminine rage, what makes Roadburn Festival so special, the role of community in the flourishing of heavy music, the creative process, and lots more.

The Ocean vs. Ne Obliviscaris: Solaris, How We Survive & Band Reinvention
Season 1, Episode 32
Show notes
Robin Staps of The Ocean alongside Tim Charles of Ne Obliviscaris join us to discuss The Ocean's epic new album Solaris, how the early days in underground Berlin shaped the band, and what's happening behind the scenes as Ne Obliviscaris prepare their first record with new co-vocalist James Dorton.
Over two decades, both bands have built undeniably devout followings across the globe. Here they compare notes on band survival, what happens when fans show material support, and share their takes on divisive vocals, the cutting room floor and major lineup changes. It made sense to bring them together and see the parallels between two bands that have never painted inside the lines.

Pepper Keenan (Down, Corrosion of Conformity) on Down's NOLA, New Music & Dimebag Darrell
Season 1, Episode 45
Show notes
Mighty rifflord Pepper Keenan (Down, Corrosion of Conformity) talks about classic records like Down's peerless debut NOLA and Deliverance, Corrosion of Conformity's maiden voyage with Pepper as a vocalist, which were both recorded during the same period three decades ago.
Now, with the first Down LP in 19 years on the way and an epic new double record from COC, we delve into how the guitar helped Pepper get his point across, how vocals became another weapon, and the blues that runs through his veins with punk rock in his heart.
We also get into Black Sabbath, King Diamond, writing riffs until he couldn't see straight, his memories of Dimebag Darrell, what getting older has done to his relationship with the guitar, and his forthcoming solo album.

Misha Mansoor (Periphery): Stealing Nirvana's Secrets, Life After Death and A Pale White Dot
Season 1, Episode 44
Show notes
Misha Mansoor is the founding member of progressive metal band Periphery, a band he formed in 2005 who are known for violently infectious melody and deceptively complex music. A devout revhead and gear head - the man has had a hand in designing everything from drum libraries to pedals - Misha reflects on the songwriting techniques Periphery stole from Nirvana, and why the collision of art and engineering sits at the heart of almost everything he loves. We also dig into A Pale White Dot, Periphery's deeply personal exploration of loneliness, solitude, grief and our tiny place in the universe; why the band scrapped an album when COVID forced them to work remotely; the weird history of djent; and why, after more than two decades of making music, his best advice is still remarkably simple: do it for the love.

In this fun, freewheeling conversation, Shakewell and Cody trace their shared history, wax lyrical about Alice in Chains, get deep on sobriety in a pill-soaked genre and explore why the walls between hardcore and rap are finally coming down.

Season 1, Episode 40
Show notes
To celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Helmet's landmark album Betty, frontman Page Hamilton reflects on the band's remarkable journey - from four musicians in a "too aggressive" New York band pasting over Dee-Lite gig posters to becoming one of the most influential acts in alternative and heavy music.
In this candid conversation, Page shares his unforgettable CBGBs audition story, the surreal experience of learning 30 David Bowie songs and performing alongside the icon, how he hears music in his head before ever picking up an instrument, and the impact Kurt Cobain's death had on the entire rock community.
While Betty provides the backdrop, this episode goes far beyond the record itself, offering a rare and personal look into the creative mind, career and philosophy of one of heavy music's true originals.
This show was filmed backstage in Sydney, Australia.

Primitive Man's Observance: Death Sludge, Occult Art & Surviving the Surveillance State
Season 1, Episode 34
Show notes
Ethan Lee McCarthy of Primitive Man joins host Christina Rowatt to talk about the band's devastating album Observance and the ideas behind their uniquely oppressive sound.
In this conversation, Ethan explains why Primitive Man rejected the limitations of traditional doom metal and coined their own term – "death sludge." He dives into the band's sonic philosophy, from crafting guitar tones that feel like "the surface of the sun" to drawing influence from artists as diverse as Portishead, industrial music and film soundtracks.
The conversation moves from sound to worldview. Ethan discusses the themes driving Observance, including techno-feudalism, the surveillance state and the growing influence of authoritarian politics around the world. Primitive Man's music may be punishingly heavy, but it's rooted in a deep awareness of the human condition.
Along the way, Ethan also shares a surprising origin story: how drawing demonic imagery as a child led to accusations of satan worship in his religious household – and ultimately pushed him toward picking up the guitar.
It's a conversation about extreme music, art, politics and the strange paths that lead people to create the soundtrack to the end of the world.

Gogol Bordello's We Mean It, Man!: War, Punk's Bastard Children & Beaver Power
Season 1, Episode 33
Show notes
Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello and their new record We Mean It, Man! isn't just a clever name. Raised on punk rock and all that came after it in Kyiv, Ukraine, the band - merging punk, gypsy music, techno, post-punk and more - brings electric energy musically and conscious power lyrically.
Eugene reflects on friends fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine, the spiritual resilience of people at war, and what it means to "make life possible again" after devastation. We talk Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Bernard Sumner, Fela Kuti, post-punk lineage, and the alchemy of working with legendary producer Nick Launay.
From punk scenes in Kyiv built on smuggled tapes with no chronology, to the philosophy of protest, rebuilding after catastrophe, and why beavers may have done more good for the planet than humans - this is a conversation about music as frequency, resistance, inheritance and survival.
