  1. Why Silence Is Meghan’s Best Move

    Season 4, Episode 37

    Show notes

Doria Ragland sat alone in the front row at St George's Chapel in 2018, and now the question in the headlines is: where is she? In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki looks at the claims swirling around Meghan Markle's mother and the pressure on Meghan to answer them. Should Meghan speak up for her mother, or does every word risk making things worse?

    In this episode

    • The 48-hour problem: How Meghan's statement within 24 hours brought a rush of sympathy, then a date error that invited every journalist to check the rest.
    • Doria's private life: Why unverified claims about a private citizen who has never given an interview are not Meghan's to defend, and why speculation is not evidence.
    • Four mistakes to avoid: Why a statement, a social post or friends briefing the press could make Meghan the owner of a story that currently belongs to someone else.
    • The quiet plan: Private support for Doria, lawyers for falsehoods, investigators for facts, and a calm return to normal life.
    • The case for speaking: The strongest arguments that silence looks cold or lets claims stand, and why a private legal route can answer them.

  2. Catherine Kept Her Biggest Partnership Quiet (Here's Why)

    Season 4, Episode 36

    Show notes

Princess Catherine's meeting with Melinda French Gates left one line in the court circular, and that single line says plenty about royal PR. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki sets a partnership built in near silence beside a very loud fortnight of headlines about Meghan. Should public figures be judged by what they say or by what they do? And what does silence actually protect?

A paper trail from Windsor Castle to a working session in London, the Shaping Us framework and Pivotal's philanthropic reach all sit against reporting on allegations concerning Meghan's father, which he denies and for which he has not been charged, and against unanswered questions about the police's handling. Royal silence can shield institutions as easily as people, Catherine and Meghan have very different press machinery, and a promise to explore is not yet a result. So is this a contrast in style and substance that holds up, or one that only looks neat before the facts are in?

    In this episode

    • The paper trail: How three low-key meetings over sixteen months, spotted only in the court circular, grew from a courtesy call into a working session.
    • Why this pairing works: What Catherine's cross-party credibility on childhood and Pivotal's funding and reach could each give the other.
    • The Epstein question: Why Melinda French Gates's public condemnation of Epstein may make the association less of a risk than it first appears.
    • Known versus unknown: What has actually been reported about Meghan's father, what he denies, and why the first questions about police handling belong with Scotland Yard.
    • The case against: Why quiet isn't the same as virtuous, why the comparison isn't level, and why the partnership should be judged in a year.

  3. How Meghan Lost the Sympathy She Just Won

    Season 4, Episode 35

    Show notes

Meghan Markle went from reviled to pitied and back to reviled in under two weeks, and the press was never going to let the story rest. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki examines the Sussexes' communications through three turbulent weeks of headlines, setting aside the question of Thomas Markle's guilt, which belongs to investigators. Why did public sympathy fade so fast? And what happens when a statement is checked against the record within days?

A disputed police-letter timeline, a run of friend briefings from the Telegraph to People, Hello and Page Six, and a sudden Sun front-page sequence all sit awkwardly beside earlier accounts of the estrangement in the Netflix series and Spare. Well-funded advisers, a business that depends on visibility and a stated wish for a quieter family life pull in different directions. Is the noise now working against everything the Sussexes say they want?

    In this episode

    • Reviled, pitied, reviled: How public opinion of Meghan swung from hostility to sympathy and back within days of the allegations against her father.
    • The statement's weak points: Why the dates, the stated reason for the estrangement and the claim about assurances did not survive the weekend.
    • Friend briefings backfire: How each outlet received its own line, and why a friend's words are read as Meghan's own voice.
    • Past words revisited: Why earlier comments in the Netflix series and Spare read differently once the letter's timeline came to light.
    • Reactive, not strategic: Why the Sussexes' operation looks emotional rather than a master plan, and why lowering the noise could serve their stated goals.

  4. Fame, Votes and Reputation: Should Celebrities Pick a Side?

    Season 4, Episode 34

    Show notes

Nicki Minaj stood on a Michigan stage and promised to back Donald Trump "forever and ever", and the question of what a celebrity endorsement really costs has never been sharper. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki looks at the reputation risks of backing a political candidate as the US midterms close in. When your favourite star tells you who to vote for, do you like them more or less? And is there a smarter way to use a huge platform?

Jacki sets Nicki Minaj, Candace Owens, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, the Chicks and Michael Jordan side by side. Each shows a different outcome: speaking out, switching sides, staying quiet and misreading the audience. YouGov polling suggests endorsements persuade far fewer people than stars may hope. Then comes the lower-risk alternative, a nonpartisan push to register and vote, with Taylor Swift's no-candidate, no-party post as the proof. Jacki closes with a ten-question checklist for anyone weighing an endorsement, from motivation and contracts to candidate vetting and the exit line. "His U-turn becomes your crisis."

    In this episode

    • Three-part reputation: Why what you say, what you do and who you stand next to all change the moment a star endorses a politician.
    • The U-turn trap: How Candace Owens built a brand around Trump, then turned on him and became a target.
    • Speak, stay silent: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, the Chicks and Michael Jordan show very different prices for very different choices.
    • The neutral path: Why a simple, nonpartisan "just vote" message can move people without tying a star to a party.
    • The ten-point checklist: Ten questions to ask before endorsing anyone, from conviction versus attention to why "forever" is a word to avoid.

  5. Why William’s Interview Landed and Harry’s Didn’t

    Season 4, Episode 33

    Show notes

Prince William took a sofa full of friends onto Graham Norton while Prince Harry sat alone with GQ Magazine, and the gap says everything about royal PR. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki sets each appearance beside one another. Why did one land as warmth and the other as a fresh row? And how much of the answer was decided months before either man said a word?

Jacki rewinds four months of royal activity for each brother, then looks at the Earthshot guest list, The Traitors and DJ stories, and the quote Harry's team had to clarify. Context, she says, isn't the frame around the picture. It is the picture. A three-question test is run over Harry's earlier chat-show moments, followed by a six-point scorecard that ends 6-0. Was William's timing a dig at Harry, or a modernisation plan already in motion? Jacki also pulls out the takeaways for anyone who has to put a spokesperson in front of a camera, from format to setting.

    In this episode

    • Context is everything: Why the same window of four months gave William a clear line and left Harry's message lost in the noise.
    • The sofa effect: How Earthshot-connected guests created third-party credibility and turned the format itself into risk management.
    • Access without wounds: The light, low-stakes stories William chose, from The Traitors to his DJ phase, and why they were a deliberate line.
    • The quote that escaped: How "Some people don't want it to work out" left a gap the audience filled, and what that means for any spokesperson.
    • Appearances versus strategy: Harry's chat-show back catalogue run through a three-question test, then the six levers behind the 6-0 verdict.

  6. Should Meghan Have Stayed Silent About Her Father?

    Season 4, Episode 32

    Show notes

Meghan Markle isn't accused of anything, but her statement about her father has put her right at the centre of one of the most serious stories of her public life. Less than 24 hours after The Sun reported Thomas Markle Jr.'s allegations against Thomas Markle Sr., allegations he flatly denies and for which nobody has been charged, the Duchess of Sussex issued a detailed personal statement naming a 2018 letter to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki Vause breaks down why, as a piece of crisis communication, it may be one of the riskiest things Meghan has ever put her name to.

Instead of a short holding line, a simple show of concern, or total deference to the authorities, the statement tried to do five jobs at once. It proves that in a crisis, saying more rarely means saying better. Jacki analyses the statement line by line, from an empathetic opening that gets the instinct right to a swipe at "certain media publications," a quiet shift of responsibility onto the authorities, and the single word "uncovered" that treats unproven allegations as established fact. Set against King Charles's restrained statement following Andrew's arrest, and Meghan's own gentle two-sentence Kensington Palace statement in 2018, this is a masterclass in what not to do in crisis communications, reputation management and legal risk, and a reminder that sometimes, silence is the strategy.

    In this episode

    • Five lines, five jobs: Why a statement that should have done one thing, showing concern and deferring to the authorities, ended up adding detail, settling scores, shifting responsibility and prejudging the outcome.
    • The "uncovered" problem: How one word turned allegations into apparent fact within 24 hours, and why it ties Meghan's credibility to the outcome of the investigation.
    • Time is your friend: Why moving so fast gave away the biggest advantage in any crisis, and how a simple holding line could have bought days, even weeks.
    • The King's playbook: Comparing Meghan's statement to Charles's "the law must take its course" response to Andrew's arrest, and the missed opportunity to work with the Palace.
    • Questions the press will now ask: The 2018 letter, last December's hospital calls, Harry's Netflix framing of the estrangement, and why "for one reason" invites everyone to check the record.

  7. King Charles Never Answered Harry (Here’s Why)

    Season 4, Episode 31

    Show notes

Two speeches, two days, one heir praised and stood beside, and one name that never came up. In this episode of Jacki's Deep Dive on Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki reads King Charles and Prince William's week of state visit pageantry and the Aberfan anniversary as a masterclass in royal PR. It landed just as Prince Harry's GQ interview hit the headlines. Was it coincidence or choreography? And can the Sun Tzu playbook explain why the palace never said a word in reply?

Jacki breaks down the three levels of royal communication: how the Crown is heard, seen and felt. She opens the picture gallery, from the carriage procession to the handwritten wreath card, and sets it against the Sussexes' Nottingham walkabout. Then comes the scoreboard, with YouGov and Ipsos polling on William, Catherine, Harry and Meghan. Jacki also makes the case that the King is patient, not slow, and points to the Andrew timeline as proof. She closes with her predictions for what the palace does next, and what comms professionals can borrow from it.

    In this episode

    • The war manual: How Sun Tzu's Art of War maps onto reputation management, from breaking resistance without fighting to controlling the agenda.
    • Choreography, not statements: Why the palace answered Harry's GQ interview with a state visit, a banquet toast and a trip to Aberfan, rather than a rebuttal.
    • Picture PR: How the order of procession, the royal dais and a handwritten wreath card told the story, and what the Sussexes cannot put in a frame.
    • The scoreboard: What YouGov and Ipsos polling says about William, Harry and the King, and why Harry may be winning headlines while William wins the country.
    • Patience as strategy: Why the King's slow approach to Harry and the Andrew timeline may be strategy rather than weakness, plus Jacki's predictions for what comes next.

  8. Are Harry and Meghan Biting the Hand That Feeds Them?

    Season 4, Episode 30

    Show notes

Nine years after their first joint engagement, Harry and Meghan returned to Nottingham, and a fan stood in the crowd holding a photo from the original. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki examines the Sussexes' return to the UK and their very visible run of walkabouts, wardrobe moments and press coverage. Is it a charity visit or a pitch? And are they winning visibility while losing something far more valuable?

Jacki opens up the royal playbook the couple is borrowing, from the walkabout format to the high-low wardrobe to anonymous friends briefing the Sunday papers. She looks at the Netflix and Guy Ritchie row, the palace tit-for-tat and what YouGov polling says about who actually likes them. Then comes the practical part: how the Sussexes could reach younger audiences, let others tell the story and think in years rather than news cycles. Is reach cheap and trust slow? And what happens when a campaign ends but the reputation remains?

    In this episode

    • Visibility versus reputation: Why a run of great headlines, Instagram growth and a Nottingham walkabout is not the same thing as public trust.
    • The borrowed playbook: How the walkabout, the high-low wardrobe and the anonymous friend in the Sunday Times all echo the palace's own methods.
    • The Netflix fight: What the Guy Ritchie casting row reveals about briefing against a business partner, and why being right is not the same as winning.
    • Wrong audience: What the YouGov age split says about who is warmest towards Harry and Meghan, and why royal-style outreach misses them.
    • The long game: A practical plan: young-people causes, other voices telling the story, a quiet stance on the institution and five years of consistency.

  9. What Prince Harry's GQ Interview REALLY Meant

    Season 4, Episode 29

    Show notes

Prince Harry’s GQ interview landed on the day the King welcomed the Sultan of Oman to Windsor, and the timing is impossible to ignore. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, Jacki breaks down the Sussex Surprise, the oldest trick in the Sussex PR playbook. Was it coincidence or pattern? And what does it mean for a prince who says he wants to reconcile with his family?

Jacki also opens the file on five years of royal clashes, from the Oprah interview to Earthshot to the Senedd opening in Cardiff. She reads the interview line by line, from ‘some people don’t want it to work out’ to ‘the next few months, perhaps’, and spots the signs of a defensive media performance. Harry’s story is set beside those of the Duke of Windsor and Diana. Finally, we explains why Harry may be trying to bank time with his father, and what Harry and the palace should do next...

    In this episode

    • The Sussex Surprise: How a GQ interview landed on the day of the Oman state visit, and why the team would have known the date.
    • A five-year pattern: From Oprah on Commonwealth Day to Earthshot trailers, why repeated clashes stop looking like bad luck.
    • Control of the narrative: Harry's case for filling the silence himself, and the catch when you can't control where each story lands.
    • Soft lines, hard edges: The hedges, conditions and 'perhaps' moments that undercut the message of reconciliation.
    • Banking time: Why Harry may be seeking moral weight with his father, and how the interview works against that plan.

  10. Paula Froelich: Why Hollywood Is Done With Meghan Markle

    Season 4, Episode 28

    Show notes

Every famous name has a team speaking for them: an agent, a manager, a publicist and, when things turn sour, a lawyer. When it works, you never see them. When it doesn't, they become the story. In this episode, we're lifting the bonnet on the Hollywood publicity machine with the amazing Paula Froelich, former deputy editor of the New York Post's legendary Page Six and host of The Scoop on NewsNation, to reveal who really holds the power when a celebrity narrative starts to unravel.

Instead of the polished statements and carefully staged appearances we're used to, this month Hollywood's representatives have been doing the talking, and not always kindly. Proving that sometimes, the people behind the curtain say the most. We analyse WME boss Ari Emanuel's brutal admission that he no longer has to think about Meghan Markle, Blake Lively ending her 20-year partnership with publicist Leslie Sloane in favour of Kelly Bush Novak, and why the Sussexes are now running two separate communications teams on two continents. From the "reality" TV mention that landed as the ultimate Hollywood diss, to a Malala photo op and As Ever charity pledge that never quite landed, this episode is a masterclass in celebrity management, crisis communications and the real power dynamics of Hollywood PR.

    In this episode

    • The agent who stopped answering: Why Ari Emanuel blocked Meghan Markle's calls, and what his very public "I don't have to think about her" comment reveals about her standing at WME.
    • The end of a 20-year partnership: Blake Lively's split from Leslie Sloane, the move to Kelly Bush Novak, and whether any publicist can separate her from the Baldoni saga.
    • Two teams, two continents: What the Sussexes' separate UK and US PR operations say about Harry and Meghan, and why a "yes, sir" approach isn't winning over the British public.
    • Borrowed legitimacy: How Meghan's Claridge's outing with Malala and a one-day As Ever charity pledge fell flat with audiences and the press.
    • When the lawyer takes the mic: Why bringing in a lawyer instead of a publicist signals a serious situation, and the behind-the-scenes horse trading between PRs, journalists and legal teams.

  11. Alison Boshoff on Harry, Meghan & the Beckham Rift

    Season 4, Episode 27

    Show notes

Six weeks into their UK return, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have kept a surprisingly low profile. The quiet hasn't won them a warmer welcome. Alison Boshoff joins us: she is editor-at-large at the Daily Mail, author of Brand Beckham, and the journalist who said back in July, when few believed it, that Harry was coming home. In this episode, we're asking whether the Sussexes' carefully managed comeback is working, or whether the PR machine is already showing cracks.

The episode covers Meghan's surprise tea with Malala and her absence from all three of London's big nights on "Frightful Friday." It also covers Harry being booed at the rugby and the Sussex team's quick attempt to spin it. Together these paint a couple who still look like outsiders. We explore why Harry and Meghan run separate PR teams on either side of the Atlantic, and how the Clooneys, Anna Wintour and Andrew Lloyd Webber have quietly closed ranks. We also look at why Harry's paid grief masterclass has landed as "dishonest and grasping." Then there's the Beckham rift, made worse by Meghan's morning Pilates at Soho Farmhouse, just down the road from David and Victoria. £3 million a year in security costs is at stake and a high-risk engagement in Nottingham is coming up. This is a sharp look at royal reputation management, brand confusion, and why showing will always beat telling.

    In this episode

    • Frightful Friday: Why Meghan was missing from the BFI premiere, the Phantom of the Opera's 40th birthday and the Clooneys' Albie Awards, and what those empty seats say about her standing in London society.
    • Two couples, two PR teams: How Harry's London adviser and Meghan's LA team leave the Sussexes looking "uncoupley." Harry is doing very British things while Meghan looks like a tourist at Claridge's.
    • The booing problem: The rugby crowd, the referee excuse that doesn't add up, and why the "human shield" theory around the children has raised eyebrows ahead of Nottingham.
    • Grief for sale: Why Harry's paid masterclass on grief, filmed in California, clashes with his message of service, and a deeply personal take on why expertise isn't the same as experience.
    • The Beckham rift: Soho Farmhouse, a loose-lipped accusation and an Invictus snub in Australia. Why a Beckham–Sussex dinner party isn't happening any time soon.

  12. Is Prince Harry's Halo For Sale?

    Season 4, Episode 26

    Show notes

Is Amazon's reported sponsorship of the Invictus Games a charity rescue or a reputational own goal? With Birmingham 2027 on the horizon, Uganda pulling out, Boeing scaling back its backing and headlines screaming about a £20 million funding gap, Prince Harry's most treasured project is suddenly at the centre of a PR storm. In this episode, we break down the reported Amazon sponsorship and what it means for the Invictus brand, Harry's reputation and the future of celebrity-backed charity partnerships.

From The Sun's reports of Jeff Bezos riding to the rescue to the claim that Kris Jenner brokered the introduction, we separate what's confirmed from what's rumour, and why the story people tell is the one you have to manage. We put the partnership through the values test on how Amazon treats people, mental health and sustainability, then follow the trail to Netflix, the Archwell first-look deal, the whispers that Meghan could be central to Birmingham, and a reported Diana documentary ahead of the 30th anniversary. Smart money or brand damage, this is a masterclass in sponsorship, brand alignment and reputation management - and a reminder that you don't just choose your partner, you choose the headlines that come with them.

    In this episode

    • The origin story question: Why the timing behind the Invictus founder story matters, and why that story is the most valuable asset in Harry's brand.
    • Rescue or top-up?: Unpicking the Sussex-seeded headlines, the Boeing step-back and the "£20 million gap" to reveal what's actually confirmed.
    • The values test: How Amazon measures up on treating people, mental health and sustainability, and why one aligned value doesn't cancel out three that clash.
    • Streaming wars and the Diana documentary: Netflix's first-look deal, the Meghan rumours and why a tribute can look like content the moment money enters the picture.
    • The PR verdict: The case for and against, plus three rules for any charity and sponsor: lead with the overlap, address the elephant, and watch who's in the photo.

  13. Why Prince Andrew Just Made the Epstein Scandal WORSE

    Season 4, Episode 25

    Show notes

Silence is supposed to starve a story, but Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has just handed the press a brand new news cycle. With no titles, no royal home and no public role, he was finally slipping out of the headlines. Now a judicial review challenging the lawfulness of the search warrants issued after his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office has put the Epstein scandal, the trade envoy role and Newsnight straight back on the front pages. Andrew denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged, but in crisis PR terms, the move raises one question above all others: did anyone think this through?

In this deep dive, we break down why taking the police to court is a legal plan rather than a PR plan, and why a court filing is a statement even when nobody says a word. We weigh the five reputational dangers, from breaking the oldest rule in the crisis playbook to looking like entitlement instead of innocence, and ask what a win on a technicality or a loss in court would really mean. We follow the money, with the palace making it publicly clear that the King’s allowance cannot fund the fight, and look at the fallout for Sarah Ferguson and Peter Mandelson, the memoir rumours and the “traitor” narrative. Finally, we run through the four questions any PR professional would ask a client before a move this bold, and why Andrew may have swapped a slow fade for a long burn.

    In this episode

    • The silence paradox: Why saying nothing is a smart crisis PR move, and why it stops working the moment you start the fight yourself.
    • Five reputational dangers: A breakdown of how reopening one chapter reopens the whole book, feeds the entitlement narrative and signals worry, whatever the legal merits.
    • Who’s paying?: How the palace’s public line in the sand over the King’s money turns a legal challenge into a story about funding and privilege.
    • The ripple effect: How the case drags in Sarah Ferguson, Peter Mandelson and the “traitor” narrative, and why a win could still read as a loss dressed up as a win.
    • The four-question PR test: The questions any client should answer before a bold move like this, and why “what is the cost of doing nothing?” is the killer.

  14. Why Outrage Keeps Madonna Timeless

    Season 4, Episode 24

    Show notes

Twenty-three years after her last VMAs performance, Madonna is back where she has always been: in the headlines and dividing opinion. She’s 68, she’s in latex, she has Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX beside her and “It’s Mother” on the big screen, and her dancers are firing lasers. Half the internet called it iconic and the other half called it a disaster. In this episode, we look at the VMA opening that had everyone talking and ask whether the Queen of Reinvention has finally stopped reinventing, or whether the outrage was the plan all along.

Viral lip-syncing clips and tabloid headlines about her age are one side of the story. Seven VMAs and a number one album are the other, which suggests that for Madonna, bad press may not exist at all. We decode what “It’s Mother” really means: a phrase from drag culture, taken up through Vogue, that works as “a claim to authorship… spoken in the language of the community” that built her. We also trace her four decades of calculated provocation, from the sex book to the Britney and Christina kiss, and compare it to Sydney Sweeney’s shock-driven brand deals. The difference is sexuality sold as power versus sexuality used to sell product. The episode is a masterclass in celebrity longevity, brand consistency and knowing your audience.

    In this episode

    • Triumph or disaster? Why the gap between the “iconic” and “cringe” headlines is where the real story sits, and why seven VMAs and a number one album complicate the backlash.
    • Decoding “It’s Mother”: How a drag-culture term became Madonna’s claim to pop culture authorship, and the start of a new legacy era.
    • Shock as strategy: Four decades of consistent provocation, from the sex book to the Britney and Christina kiss, and why tabloid outrage only strengthens her brand.
    • Madonna vs Sydney Sweeney: Sexuality as power for women versus sexuality to shift product, and what it takes to turn provocation into a long-term asset.
    • Knowing your audience: Why Madonna’s constant ability to surprise has always been built into her PR strategy.

  15. Harry and Meghan's Clever Switch

    Season 4, Episode 23

    Show notes

Prince Harry has been everywhere this September, while Meghan Markle has all but disappeared from public view. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, we're unpacking what that split says about the Sussexes' strategy since moving back to the UK. From a skydive in Canada to a teleprompter meltdown at the Clinton Foundation, Harry's month has been loud and visible, and oddly more focused on Canada than on the country he's just moved back to. Meghan, meanwhile, has posted three times on Instagram, and none of it about her own brand.

We're walking through Harry's 'partner playbook', borrowing other people's platforms without hammering home his own Invictus message, and why that matters with roughly £20 million in sponsorship still needed. We're talking Amazon rumours, a possible Diana documentary tie-in, and why Meghan's near-silence, from As Ever's quiet newsletter to Cotswolds gossip about farm shop convoys, is filling the gap with speculation instead of strategy. As we hear in the episode, 'communications is also about consistency, and if you're not consistent then you cannot be credible.'

    In this episode

    • Canada vs Britain: Why Harry sounds more enthusiastic about Canada than the country he's just moved back to, and what that says about his messaging.
    • The partner playbook: How Harry borrows other organisations' platforms without ever driving home his own Invictus message.
    • The Amazon rumour: Why a rumoured Invictus sponsorship deal might be about more than money, and could tie into a Diana documentary.
    • Meghan's vanishing act: Why her near-silence and a dormant As Ever brand are filling the gap with Cotswolds gossip instead of control.
    • The security play: Why every appearance might really be building the case for taxpayer-funded protection.

  16. Sydney Sweeney: The Cost of Shock PR

    Season 4, Episode 22

    Show notes

Sydney Sweeney is once again at the centre of an advertising firestorm. This time, as the face and financial stakeholder of betting platform Novig, she has ignited our conversation about shock advertising, brand trust and reputation risk. In this episode of Where Pop Culture Meets PR, we're unpacking why controversy has become a deliberate media strategy for brands. 17. Andrew Lownie: Why the Palace Should Fear Charles Spencer

    Season 4, Episode 21

    Show notes

The palace's carefully managed silence has been shattered, and bestselling royal biographer Andrew Lownie has been watching the fallout unfold. The day after Charles Spencer's explosive interview with Laura Kuenssberg reopened questions about Princess Diana's treatment and the royal family's decades-long PR machine, Lownie joins us to unpack what's really happening behind palace doors. As the author of The Rise and Fall of the House of York and The Traitor King, and one of the country's most respected literary agents, Lownie has faced the same playbook of discreditation that Spencer is now up against, and he's not holding back.

Instead of a straightforward defence, the palace has deployed its oldest strategy: never complain, never explain, and quietly discredit the messenger rather than the message. We analyse the timing of King Charles's carefully worded statement, the credibility battle playing out between Spencer's inner circle and palace briefings, and why Lownie believes the monarchy isn't just harbouring a few bad apples but is, in his words, an institution where "the orchard itself was diseased." From the looming threat of a Meghan tell-all to Sarah Ferguson's remarkable reinvention and what Lownie's next book on Prince Philip will reveal, this conversation is a masterclass in royal reputation management, institutional accountability, and the widening cracks in the crown's carefully constructed image.

    In this episode:

    • The palace playbook: Why "never complain, never explain" is still the monarchy's go-to defence against Charles Spencer's bombshell claims.
    • The diseased orchard: Lownie's warning that royal wrongdoing isn't a few bad apples, but a systemic failure of accountability at the top.
    • The next royal bombshells: Why a Meghan tell-all may be inevitable, and whether Sarah Ferguson has one more secret left to spill.
    • Behind the book deal: How royal biographies actually get serialised, and why the Daily Mail keeps winning the bidding war.
    • Writing Prince Philip: Lownie on the parallels between Philip and Andrew, and what his next book will uncover about the monarchy's future.

  18. Why The Royal Family Will NEVER Use TikTok

    Season 4, Episode 20

    Show notes

TikTok has become one of the most powerful, and least understood, tools in modern PR, branding and crisis communication, and this episode breaks down exactly how. Jacki Vause sits down with Harri Brown, co-founder of TikTok-first agency Antler Social, to unpack why the platform has matured far beyond dancing teenagers into a genuine search engine. Around 70% of TikTok's global user base is now over 25, and roughly half of millennials saying they'd rather search TikTok than Google.

At the centre of the conversation is Meghan Markle, whose As Ever brand sold out its first product drop in 45 minutes, only to be buried under accusations of unsold jam and wickless candles. Her total absence, along with the rest of the Royal Family, from a platform built on authenticity raises real questions about digital strategy, control, and trust.

From there, the discussion moves into the mechanics PR and social media professionals actually need to know: how to read engagement quality and spot the difference between organic virality and paid-for influence, why low-quality comments and inflated view counts are red flags, and how brands and micro-influencer UGC campaigns have used TikTok to genuinely shift consumer trust. Harri also breaks down why the Royal Family's TikTok silence is a deliberate, if increasingly risky, crisis-communication choice, and offers a clear-eyed verdict on how Meghan Markle could better position As Ever if she wants the brand — rather than her polarising public image — to do the talking.

    In This Episode

    • The search engine shift: How TikTok's maturing audience — now 70% over 25 — has turned it into a genuine competitor to Google for discovery and trust.
    • Spotting fake engagement: Harri's litmus test for telling organic virality apart from bought views, bot comments, and over-engineered "authenticity."
    • The authenticity trap: Why raw, unfiltered honesty beats performative "authentic self" branding, and what Gordon Ramsay, Hugh Grant and Kiki Palmer got right.
    • Meghan Markle's As Ever problem: Why pairing a polarising personal brand with a premium product line is a high-risk strategy, and how Harri would fix it.
    • The Royal Family's TikTok silence: Why the monarchy's total absence from the platform is deliberate, and the crisis-comms parallels between staying quiet online and off it.

  19. Are Harry & Meghan Walking Into The Lions Den?!

    Season 4, Episode 19

    Show notes

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return to the UK couldn't have landed at a more loaded moment for Royal PR strategy. With Remembrance Week, King Charles's 77th birthday, and the Buckingham Palace Diplomatic Reception all packed into the run-up to Christmas, the communications offices of both the King and the Prince and Princess of Wales are treating this stretch like a war room — mapping every date on the calendar as a potential landmine and reverse-engineering the crisis plans that almost certainly already exist behind palace doors. In this episode, we break down exactly how that planning works, from evidence-banking and precedent-tracking to the process that governs how palace comms react when — not if — a Sussex surprise drops.

We dig into why Harry and Meghan's presence back in the UK alters the relative PR risks around Remembrance Week and Charles's birthday, and why this close proximity is proving more dangerous to manage than distance ever was. We look at the King's long game — the same patient, evidence-first strategy that eventually impacted Prince Andrew — and unpack why "never complain, never explain" remains the most effective tool in the Royal playbook. We also examine how William and Catherine's cause-first approach, from the Earthshot Prize to suicide prevention work, keeps their office insulated from the landmines The King's office can't avoid, and ask what Harry and Meghan's actual end game is now that they're back on British soil.

    In this episode:

    • The war room strategy: How palace comms map out landmines months in advance, from evidence banks to crisis-response protocols.
    • Remembrance Week's risk: Why the run-up to Charles's birthday, just three days later, has strategists on edge.
    • The long game: Why Charles is letting Harry and Meghan write their own downfall, and what the Andrew precedent tells us about his timing.
    • Cause over self: How William and Catherine's Earthshot and mental health work keeps their office one step ahead of the Sussexes.
    • The Sussex endgame: What Harry and Meghan actually want from their return — and why even their own team may not know.

  20. King Charles & Prince Harry: A Letter Or a Warning?

    Season 4, Episode 18

    Show notes

The royal silence may be over, but for Harry and Meghan, the ambiguity is only just beginning. Eleven days after the Sussexes touched back down in the UK, King Charles responded via a letter sent on his behalf by Lord Chamberlain. The letter confirms that Harry and Meghan remain non-working royals, that their HRH titles stay in abeyance, and that their position is now described as "akin to private citizens." In this episode, we break down the deliberately careful language of that letter, and why an institution famous for precision chose to leave so much still unresolved.

Instead of a slap-down or a real change in status, the palace has delivered what plays out like a holding statement dressed up as clarification — dropped, curiously, to coincide with a Ravec security review, and stopping just short of calling Harry and Meghan private citizens outright. We unpack the "akin to" wording that leaves the door open for whatever comes next, why the message was routed through the Lord Chamberlain rather than issued as a palace press statement, and why Harry and Meghan's camp is already briefing that they were "shocked." From the quiet reinforcement of the Sandringham Agreement to the fallout from Meghan's Gloria Steinem tribute and whispers of a "rival court" forming around the Sussexes, we explore whether this letter is a genuine warning shot or the opening move in a much longer game of royal chess.

    In this episode:

    • The ambiguous letter: Why the Lord Chamberlain's carefully worded note about Harry and Meghan's status manages to say almost nothing new — and why that might be exactly the point.
    • The "private citizens" trap: What the phrase "akin to private citizens" really implies for Lilibet and Archie's future titles.
    • Timing and Ravec: Why the letter dropped alongside a security review, and our prediction on who ends up funding Sussex security going forward.
    • The rival court forming: What Meghan's Gloria Steinem tribute reveals about the widening gap between the Sussex and Wales camps.
    • What comes next: Why this letter could be the palace's final warning before a real reckoning over the Sandringham Agreement.
