Strategic Acres: Where Pheasant Habitat Matters Most
Season 1, Episode 33
Show notes
Habitat loss is a major hurdle for many upland game birds, including the Ring-necked pheasant. In response to pheasant declines throughout Nebraska, many conservation efforts have focused on enrolling private lands into conservation programs that work with producers to convert portions of agricultural fields into suitable wildlife habitat. But all habitat is not equal habitat, so how do we know when and where to prioritize habitat restoration for the best results? Joining the podcast this month to unpack new research addressing this issue are Dr. Allison Barg, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Bryan O'Connor, Upland Game Program Manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. From current pheasant population trends to developing tools for more strategic management, this is a great conversation highlighting the current collaborative work on a very special bird.

At the River's Edge: Agriculture, Flood Risk and Conservation
Season 1, Episode 32
Show notes
What happens when floods, fish and farms all connect? Flooding is a natural process, but it can cause major problems for farms and residential areas alike. Joining us this week is Mitch Paine, Flood Risk Policy and Planning Specialist with the Washington Department of Ecology and lecturer for University of Washington's Urban Planning program, to walk us through how conservation, agriculture and flooding can all work together. From the history of flood policy in the US to modern approaches, we discuss a collective move away from trying to strictly control rivers to a more integrated and holistic flood management strategy. To showcase this approach, we look to the Snoqualmie Valley in Washington, where a collaborative effort has helped reduce flood damage while also recovering vital salmon habitat.

100 Years of Pheasants: The Making of a Game Bird
Season 1, Episode 30
Show notes
Join us in celebrating the 100th year of pheasant hunting in Nebraska! In this episode of the WildAg Podcast, we welcome Lonnie Shafer, hunter and author of Shafer's Nebraska Pheasant Hunting Almanac, to explore the history of the Ring-necked pheasant in Nebraska and across the United States. Schafer traces the bird's origins in Asia, its introduction to North America, and the events that led to its establishment as one of the nation's most iconic game birds. The conversation also examines the evolution of pheasant hunting in the U.S., highlighting how changing landscapes, wildlife management, and conservation efforts have shaped hunting and stocking over time.

The Future of Farming
Season 1, Episode 29
Show notes
In this episode, we chat with Josh Murman and Colton Rathman to explore how PTx Ag is bringing autonomous technology to the farm by transforming compatible tractors into self-operating machines. We discuss how the system works and how it helps farmers tackle labor shortages, improve efficiency, and complete critical fieldwork on time. But we also look beyond productivity, exploring how autonomy could make conservation practices such as cover cropping, reduced tillage, and other stewardship efforts more practical and accessible by reducing the time and labor they require. Whether you're curious about autonomous farming or the future of sustainable agriculture, this episode offers an inside look at the opportunities this technology can create.

Productive Plains: The secret is in the soil
Season 1, Episode 21
Show notes
What makes the Great Plains such a productive agricultural hotspot? And why are some fields just more productive than others no matter what? It turns out the secret is in the soil. This month we are joined by Dr. Ray Ward, founder of Ward Laboratories, to discuss how our soils came to be and how a better knowledge of your soil can lead to healthier farms and ecosystems overall. With a PhD in Soil Fertility and personal farming experience, Dr. Ward shares how practices like cover crops and diversifying an operation can lead to massive benefits – in soil health, water quality, wildlife abundance, ecosystem health and farmer profitability.

Hunting Access, Hometown Impact
Season 1, Episode 15
Show notes
Have you ever struggled to find areas to hunt? Especially in Nebraska, where over 97% of the state is privately owned land, access to hunting can be difficult to come by. We know from previous research that a lack of access is also a top reason why people stop hunting or don't start at all. But public access programs like Open Fields and Waters and the Nebraska Community Access Partnership are tackling this issue head-on. For any hunter interested, these programs provide access to quality private lands to hunt; for landowners, it's another way to bring in a little extra income. This month we are joined by Adam Kester, Access Program Manager at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and Addie Piernicky, NCAP Coordinating Wildlife Biologist at Pheasants Forever, to learn all about how these programs are transforming hunting access in Nebraska and beyond.
