1837: Flirting with Krishna | Live with Pilgrims from the Himalayas
Episode 1837
Show notes
Some people meet Krishna, feel overwhelmed, and run. Years later, they find themselves bathing in the Ganges in the Himalayas. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha go live from Devprayag, where two sacred rivers meet to form the Ganges, to hear from the pilgrims traveling with them: a hardcore kid from Prague, a dentist from Vermont, a self-described skeptic of language, and a young woman who found bhakti through her Uber driver. Each once flirted with Krishna, walked away, and discovered he was still there. What draws a person back to a path they once wandered from?

The Absolute Truth Goes to School | Why Krishna Studied Under a Guru
Episode 1836
Show notes
He is the origin of every branch of knowledge, and yet he sits down at the feet of a teacher. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha, live from the ISKCON temple in Toronto, follow Krishna and Balarāma as they leave their village life behind and enter a guru's school. Why would the all-knowing seek a teacher at all? And what does his example reveal about humility, gratitude, and the lost art of being a student in an age that takes its teachers for granted? Srimad Bhagavatam 10.45.20–34

Can You Love Without Possessing? | Siddhartha and the Art of Letting Go
Episode 1835
Show notes
A sage who has found peace beside the river is suddenly undone by love for a son he never knew he had, and Time, in the form of the river, laughs at him. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha read from Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and ask whether we can love without trying to own. As Siddhartha struggles to let go, he catches a reflection that changes how he sees his own past. It opens a conversation about attachment, the pain we keep repeating until we learn from it, and why laughing at ourselves may be the first real step toward freedom. Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha • Bhagavad-gītā 9.4

Hurt Others, Hurt Yourself | The Web of Mutual Obligation
Episode 1834
Show notes
"I'm independent. I don't owe anybody anything." It's the modern dream: happiness without obligation. Moral teachings answer that we're woven into a web of mutual obligation. Deeper spiritual teachings explain why: in a real sense we are one, parts of one whole, made of the same divine energy, so you can't hurt another without hurting yourself. The deepest teachings add that we are also eternally distinct, and that difference is what makes love possible: a love so intimate that God lets himself forget he's God, just so his parents can hold him on their laps. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha trace that ascent, from the writings of James Baldwin to Krishna's pastimes in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.45.1–19

If You Don't See God in All, You Won't See God at All | Beyond Religious Ritual
Episode 1833
Show notes
You can attend every service, perform every ritual perfectly, but if you're unkind to the people around you, then you've missed God entirely. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha explore why seeing God in every living being is the real heart of spiritual life, and why cruelty to others cuts us off from the very God we're trying to reach. They draw on the Bhagavad-gītā's thirteenth chapter, Kapila's teachings to his mother, and a striking 500-year-old commentary by Vallabhācārya. They also explore the aftermath of Kaṁsa's death in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, where his grieving wives speak a truth he never understood. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.44.43–51, 3.29.20–27 Bhagavad-gītā 4.34–35, 6.29–30, 13.28–29

Adapting Ancient Wisdom Without Losing It / Q&A Vol. 302
Episode 1832
Show notes
How does an ancient wisdom tradition survive for thousands of years? It needs teachers who hand it down unchanged, and yet each generation has to hear it in a new way. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha take questions live on the final day of the Wisdom of the Sages retreat and explore that tension: what a true teacher must preserve, and what they're free to adapt to time, place, and circumstance. Along the way they look at what a deeper initiation is really for, why devotees sing so many songs if one mantra contains everything, and whether the great spiritual teachers of the future might already be among us.

Living Bhakti Among People Who Don't Share It / Q&A Vol. 301
Episode 1831
Show notes
There's a sticky note in Ashley's refrigerator that reads "meat section." She's the only devotee in her home, and between a loving family that doesn't share her path and a day with too few hours, her spiritual practice has started to come with a side of guilt. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha take questions live from the Wisdom of the Sages Autumn Retreat, exploring how to walk a spiritual path among people who aren't on it: when to be flexible, when to be firm, and why love matters more than getting every rule right. Also: who is "Rāma" in the Hare Krishna mahā-mantra, and why does the bhakti tradition insist on chanting it exactly as it was handed down, rather than remixing it? Why don't yogis eat eggs? And what do you say when someone at the Thanksgiving table asks, "So what is this thing you're into?"

Bhakti Doesn't Grow in a Hard Heart / Q&A Vol. 300
Episode 1830
Show notes
Someone on the street asks you for money, and you're fairly sure where it will go, and it's not good. Can walking past be compassion, or is it quietly hardening your heart? Raghunath and Kaustubha take live questions at the Wisdom of the Sages retreat at Supersoul Farm: whether saying no can ever be an act of love, what to do when the charity work you've done for years no longer sits right with your conscience, and how to keep a sense of spiritual urgency when life is going well.

A Field Guide to Your Inner Demons | Bhaktivinoda Thakur Decodes Krishna's Pastimes
Episode 1829
Show notes
In the 19th century, British colonial scholars dismissed the pastimes of Krishna as primitive and immoral, and a generation of educated Indians began to believe them. The brilliant bhakti theologian Bhaktivinoda Thakur answered with a book called the Krishna-samhita. His response: look closer. Raghunath and Kaustubha explore how the stories of Krishna can be read as the soul's path to restoring its original capacity for love. Each demon Krishna defeats stands for a specific obstacle in the heart, and together they form a remarkably precise map. Some obstacles are easy to spot, such as cruelty, malice, and argument for its own sake. Others are far more subtle: empty literalism, counterfeit devotion, spiritual immaturity that passes for innocence, and the taste for fame that arrives just as one starts to advance.

We Never Learned the Power of Our Thoughts | You Become What You Think About
Episode 1828
Show notes
Be good. Behave. Behave yourself. Growing up, most of us heard plenty about our actions and almost nothing about the thoughts that produce them. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha begin with Earl Nightingale's 1956 claim that history's great thinkers agree on one point: we become what we think about. They trace that idea to the Bhagavad Gita and the practice of mantra meditation, then turn to the Srimad Bhagavatam's most startling example, a tyrant who thought of Krishna constantly, in sheer terror, and what became of him. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.44.32–43

The Emptiness of Peace and the Fullness of Love | Meditation Beyond Stillness
Episode 1827
Show notes
Most of us long for a quiet mind. But what fills it once the noise is gone? On a solo bike ride across upstate New York, Raghunath finds that solitude alone doesn't bring peace. Left to itself, the mind drifts to its default setting. Raghunath and Kaustubha explore why the path of bhakti points beyond stillness to something fuller. Amid the violence of Krishna's wrestling match in Mathura, the women in the crowd make a startling claim: the greatest yogis aren't hermits on mountaintops, but village women whose hearts are absorbed in love while churning butter and caring for their children. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.44.12–34

Why the Comment Thread Is Killing Your Soul | Speaking Truth to Power
Episode 1826
Show notes
When something is wrong and we say nothing, our own inner light begins to fade. But speaking up only heals when it comes from a place of love. Raghunath and Kaustubha draw on an old Quaker insight: love endures and overcomes, while hatred destroys, starting with the one who carries it. Online comment threads can drag out our lower nature and cloud our spiritual clarity, and posting is cheap. The more meaningful, illuminating path is not only to speak truth to power, but to live it. Our Labels Are Warping Our Vision | The Many Ways We Respond to Krishna
Episode 1825
Show notes
I'm a man. I'm a woman. I'm American. I'm this, I'm that. Every label we carry colors how we see the world, ourselves and God. Yoga starts from a bold premise: our perception is clouded, and it can be cleared. Bhakti goes further still. As the lens clears, a love unique to each of us awakens. Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that teaching through Krishna's entrance into Kamsa's wrestling arena, where the same boy stirs terror in one heart, wonder in another, and varieties of love in others. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.42.32 - 10.43.40 Nārada Pañcarātra, quoted in Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 19.170

You're Not in Control | The Placebo Illusion and the Bhakti Reality
Episode 1824
Show notes
Our sense of security is based on illusion — confirmed by both modern science and the sages of the Bhakti Yoga tradition. A landmark psychiatric study reveals something startling about what actually determines whether we panic or stay calm. The Vedic sages were ahead of the curve, and put it plainly: we are living in two illusions — false terror and false security. The material energy is infinitely more powerful than us. True security comes only when we wake up from the dream and step into the spiritual truth, connecting with the power that is actually stable. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha explore what that looks like in practice. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.42.15-31

Life Is Sacred and Life Is Everywhere | The Earth Personified in Krishna's Pastimes
Episode 1823
Show notes
In the form of a beautiful teenager God enters a new city, meets a hunchback girl in the street, transforms her body and enters a romance with her. On the surface it sounds bizarre. But read with the right eyes, it is rich in ecological and theological depth. The girl is an expansion of Mother Earth herself, bent low under the burden of wicked rulers. Krishna straightens her out, indicates the value in loving nature personified, and demonstrates how God can reciprocate with all varieties of love. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.42. 1-18

Grace in Your Face | Human Nature's Resistance to Unconditional Love
Episode 1822
Show notes
Are we all like wounded animals caught in a fence, biting the hand of the person trying to help? Is spiritual grace something exceptionally rare — and most of us the unfortunate ones who never win the lotto? Or is grace all around us, and we just need to put down what's in our arms to receive it? Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that alongside Krishna's entrance into Mathurā — where two encounters show exactly what it looks like to resist and receive grace. Srimad Bhagavatm 10.41.40-52

Krishna Doesn't Need Your Zucchini Bread | But He Wants Your Love
Episode 1821

The Bhagavad-gītā sings of Krishna as the Absolute Truth — complete in himself, independent and lacking nothing. He doesn't need anything we can offer him. And yet — he wants our love. Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that paradox through the narration of Krishna's entrance into Mathurā — and what two very different encounters reveal about the one thing that actually matters in our relationship with God. They Took Him Into Their Hearts Through Their Eyes | Krishna Enters Mathurā
Episode 1820
Show notes
When Krishna and Balarāma entered Mathurā, the women climbed to the rooftops and showered them with flowers. They took him into their hearts through their eyes — embraced him, the embodiment of all ecstasy — and their bodily hair stood on end. And in that way, unlimited distress disappeared from their lives. That is the experience that the path of bhakti leads to. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that moment alongside a special guest — Malani Devi Dasi — who shares the story of this year's extraordinary Bhagavatam distribution campaign: 100,008 sets going out to souls around the world. Daring to Fly Higher | Jonathan Livingston Seagull and the Ascent to Bhakti
Episode 1819
Show notes
In the 1970s the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull became a bestseller. A parable about a gull who refuses to follow the flock and discovers that his true nature is limitless. It serves as an insightful description of the spiritual path. The masses mistake worldly objects for sources of happiness — and spend their lives chasing what can never deliver. And some brave few dare to fly higher, brushing aside the disapproval of the flock. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that courage alongside Akrūra's extraordinary prayers — about chasing the mirage and missing the divine love in one's own heart. Why Nothing in This World Satisfies Us
Episode 1818
Show notes
Voltaire — the greatest writer of the French Enlightenment wrote that there is a dim flame burning in every heart — an intuition that somewhere there is a home, a happiness that is real and lasting. In this episode Raghunath and Kaustubha explore that intuition, what covers that dim light, and how the sacred texts of the bhakti tradition say it can be uncovered. Srimad Bhagavatam 10.40.10-24
