  1. Coffee w/ the Ancestors │ Samhain Magic

    Season 7, Episode 163

    Show notes

Samhain is officially here and many of us feel called to connect with those on the other side. For some, ancestor veneration can be quite intimidating, but connecting with those across the veil doesn’t have to be a complicated process, it can be as simple as a cuppa with your grandma. Instead of focusing on elaborate rituals, perhaps we can simply hold space and remain open to the signs of communication that follow. With a humble candle, a physical item of remembrance (if we have it), and an open heart, we can ask for the guidance and support that we seek. As we trek through the colorful autumn trees, consider your support system on the other side. Get the kettle ready, it's time for coffee with the ancestors!

    What’s for dinner?

    Pumpkin Risotto

    Ingredients:

    • 2 tbsp olive oil
    • A handful of fresh sage leaves
    • 1 tbsp butter
    • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
    • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
    • 1/2- 1 cup pumpkin or butternut squash, chopped
    • ½ tsp ground black pepper
    • ¾ cup risotto rice
    • 2 cups vegetable stock
    • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese

    Instructions:

    • Heat olive oil over medium heat and fry a handful of sage leaves until they're crispy. Set aside for later.
    • In the same pan, melt butter over low-medium heat and add chopped onion. Allow the onions to cook until translucent.
    • Add minced garlic and chopped pumpkin. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
    • Add the risotto rice and mix well.
    • Keep adding stock, a ladleful at a time, and stir. Wait for the rice to soak up all the stock before adding more. Keep doing this for 15-20 minutes until the rice is al dente.
    • Add and mix freshly grated parmesan cheese.
    • Serve hot and garnish with fried sage leaves and grated parmesan.

    Spiced Coffee (or Tea!)

    Ingredients:

    • 1 ½ cups milk of your choice
    • ½ cup water
    • 1/2 mug freshly brewed coffee , substitute strong black tea if preferred
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 6 cardamom pods, crushed
    • Maple syrup to taste (if you like sweetened coffee)
    • Ground cinnamon and cardamom for sprinkling

    Instructions:

    • Add the milk, cinnamon, and crushed cardamom to a medium pot.
    • Bring to just below boiling point - you don’t want to boil it. Let it sit for about 60 seconds to allow spices to infuse and then add back to the heat and repeat twice more. Strain into the mixing cup. Then add sweetener if desired.
    • If you have a frother, froth the milk to desired frothiness.
    • Fill mug halfway with freshly brewed coffee, top with frothed milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon and cardamom.
    • Enjoy with an ancestor! ✨

    What’s for dinner?

    Sheet Pan Warm Kale Salad

    Ingredients:

    For the Salad:

    • 1 Medium Butternut Squash peeled and chopped in 1/2 inch pieces
    • 1 Small Red Onion thinly sliced
    • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
    • 1 Pound Ground Mild Italian Sausage
    • 1 Bunch Dino Kale stems removed and chopped into bite-sized pieces
    • ⅓ Cup Dried Cranberries
    • ⅓ Cup Pistachios coarsley chopped
    • 1 Cup Feta Cheese crumbled

    For the Maple Dijon Dressing:

    • ¼ Cup Olive Oil
    • 3 Tablespoons Maple Syrup
    • 2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
    • 1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard
    • 3 Cloves Garlic
    • ½ Teaspoon Kosher Salt
    • ½ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

    Instructions:

    • To make this salad, start by preheating your oven to 425 F.

    • If using whole butternut squash, prepare the squash by removing the seeds and chopping it into 1/2 inch pieces. If you're using pre-cut butternut squash (which I recommend - it's so much easier!) you can skip this step.

    • Add the chopped butternut squash to a sheet pan. Then, chop the red onion and add it to the baking sheet.

    • Add the olive oil, a pinch of sea salt, and a pinch of ground black pepper, and toss the squash and onion until they're fully coated in both. Make sure they're both spread out into an even layer on the sheet pan.

    • Transfer the baking sheet into the oven for 20 minutes.

    • While the veggies are in the oven, prepare the sausage. Heat a pan, on the stove, over medium heat, and add in the sausage.

    • Use a spoon to break the sausage up well, then allow it to cook until browned. Once the sausage is cooked through, remove it from the heat and set it aside.

    • Then, prepare the dressing. Add all of the dressing ingredients (the olive oil, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard, garlic, kosher salt, and ground black pepper) to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.

    • Once the veggies are done, remove them from the oven.

    • Then, add the kale and cooked sausage to the sheet pan, along with 1/4 of the dressing, and toss until they're fully incorporated with the veggies.

    • Return the sheet pan to the oven and allow everything to cook together for 15 more minutes.

    • Once the salad is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes before adding the feta cheese, dried cranberries, and chopped pistachios.

    • Finally, drizzle the remaining dressing on top and toss to fully combine. Serve immediately and enjoy!

    Show notes

Expansion can be challenging, especially when life puts roadblocks in our way. It's easy to believe that these setbacks are a sign that we're not meant to stretch and grow. Sweet Potato Burrito

    Ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

    Olive oil, for drizzling

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

    2 cloves garlic, minced

    1/2 onion, finely diced

1 jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped

    1 tablespoon chili powder

    1 tablespoon tomato paste

    1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

2 cups packed fresh baby spinach

One 15-ounce can black beans, drained

    One 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes

    1 cup crumbled queso fresco

    Juice of 1 lime

    Ten 10-inch whole-wheat tortillas

    1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped

    Hot sauce, as desired

    Instructions:

    • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

    • Add 2 tablespoons olive oil to a large saute pan and place over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion and saute until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then, add the jalapeno and stir to combine. Add the chili powder, tomato paste and oregano. Stir to combine and cook for an additional 2 minutes to release the flavors of the herbs. Then, add the spinach, beans and tomatoes. Fold gently to combine. Simmer until the spinach is wilted and the liquid has reduced by half, 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the queso fresco, lime juice and sweet potatoes. Taste and season as needed.
    • Distribute the mixture evenly among the tortillas. Roll the tortillas, garnish with the cilantro and hot sauce and serve immediately. Enjoy!

    Japanese Milk Tea

1 tbsp Darjeeling tea leaves, loose
    1 cup milk

    • Add the 1 cup water into a small saucepan over high heat. Heat until it comes to a boil.

    • Add 1 tbsp tea leaves into the water and boil for 2 minutes.

    • Add 1 cup milk into the tea and reduce the heat to medium. Heat the milk, stirring occasionally, until it just barely comes to a simmer. Do not allow the milk to boil.

    • Pour the Royal Milk Tea through a fine mesh strainer or tea strainer, removing all of the loose tea leaves.
    • Once strained, pour the hot water out of your tea cups. Then divide the tea amongst two warmed tea cups.
    • Flavor with 2 tsp granulated sugar if desired! Enjoy!

    Roasted Butternut Squash Soup

    Ingredients:

    3 ½ pounds butternut squash

    1 tablespoon olive oil

    1 small yellow onion, halved

    1 small garlic clove, peeled

    ½ tablespoon maple syrup

    1 teaspoon salt

freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

    ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

3 to 4 cups vegetable broth

Optional garnish: pepitas, parsley, and freshly ground black pepper

    Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220C). Slice the ends off the butternut squash. Stand the butternut squash on end and carefully slice it in half lengthwise. Then, Use a spoon to remove the seeds and membrane. Pro tip: the butternut squash is easier to slice through if you microwave it for 2 to 3 minutes.

Transfer the butternut squash to a baking tray cut side up, coat with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Then flip the butternut squash over so the cut side is down and roast for 60 minutes.

After 30 minutes, spread a little oil on the cut side of the onion and add it to the baking tray, cut side down. Continue cooking for another 30 minutes, then remove the baking tray from the oven.

Once the butternut squash is cool enough to handle, use a large spoon to scoop out the flesh and transfer it to a high-powered blender. Discard the outer layer of the onion and then add the onion to the blender along with the garlic, maple syrup, salt, nutmeg, ginger, and vegetable broth. Start with 3 cups of vegetable broth and add more to achieve your desired consistency. Blend on high for 1 to 2 minutes, until creamy. Taste the soup and add more salt and pepper if needed.

Pour the soup into serving bowls. If you'd like, garnish the top with pepitas, parsley and black pepper

    • Bake the scones for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes as you prepare the icing.
    • In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and maple syrup together, whisking occasionally. Once the butter has melted, remove from heat and whisk in the sifted confectioners’ sugar. Taste and add a pinch of salt if desired. Drizzle over warm scones. Enjoy!

    What’s for dinner?

    Autumn Potato Soup

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
    • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and diced
    • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
    • 2 1/2 pounds orange sweet potatoes (yams), peeled and cubed
    • 1 pound zucchini, sliced
    • 2 quarts yellow vegetable stock (you can substitute chicken stock if not vegan/vegetarian)
    • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
    • 1 teaspoon cumin
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
    • Pinch cayenne pepper (or more to taste)
    • 3 medium tomatoes, peeled and diced (or one 14 oz. can diced tomatoes)
    • 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter, or more to taste
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Chopped roasted peanuts or fresh thyme leaves for garnish(optional)

    Instructions:

    • Heat olive oil over medium till hot (not smoking). Sauté onion in the oil until it begins to soften and turn golden, about 10 minutes. Add garlic and continue to sauté for 3 minutes more.
    • Add sweet potatoes, zucchini, vegetable stock, thyme leaves, cumin, ginger, and cayenne to the pot. I like to use ¼ tsp of cayenne, which gives a nice spicy kick to the soup. If you’re sensitive to spice, start with 1/8 tsp. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce to a light simmer for 20 minutes.
    • Add diced tomatoes to the pot. Simmer for 5-10 minutes more until all the vegetables are tender.
    • Stir 1/3 cup peanut butter into the broth until it dissolves. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add more cayenne for heat, if desired. Add additional peanut butter to taste. Some like it with just a hint of peanut flavor. I typically use a few more tablespoons (around 1/2 cup total) because I love peanut butter. Adjust until the flavor is to your liking.
    • Soup may be served as-is (chunky with texture), or you can puree the soup with an immersion blender until smooth. Serve garnished with chopped roasted peanuts or fresh thyme leaves.

  8. Seasonal Shifts │ Unfinished Business

    Season 6, Episode 156

    Show notes

The wheel turns, this is simply a fact. But what happens when we're not ready for the turn? How do we intentionally address unfinished business from season to season, so that we don't carry heavy, stagnant energy into the next cycle? With each subtle shift, pay attention to your energetic state. Are you reluctant to move forward? Conversely, are you eagerly rushing into the next season without even a backwards glance? The moments where we dig our heels in or hastily plow ahead have something to teach us. As we listen to the evening cicadas, consider the changing season in your life, are you ready for the shift or do you have unfinished business to attend to?

    What’s for dinner?

    Pastina Soup

    Ingredients:

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 cup finely diced yellow onion 1 onion
    • 1 cup finely diced carrots 2 carrots
    • 1 cup finely diced celery 2-3 ribs
    • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
    • 5 cups chicken or vegetable stock
    • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed rosemary
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 3/4 cup pastina or other tiny pasta
    • 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken or beans of choice
    • 2-4 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice optional, but so good

    Serving Suggestions

    • Parmesan cheese optional, for topping
    • Crusty buttered bread optional, for serving
    • Dried or fresh parsley, added to taste
    • Dried or fresh dill, added to taste

    Instructions:

    • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper (I add 1/2 teaspoon each). Sauté for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until very golden and starting to brown at the edges. Lower the heat if anything begins to burn. Don't rush this step
    • Pour in the stock, Italian seasoning, rosemary, and thyme. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes to let the flavors meld.
    • Add the pastina directly to the pot and simmer until tender, about 5–7 minutes (check your pasta package for exact timing). Stir occasionally so the pasta doesn’t stick to the bottom.
    • Stir in the shredded rotisserie chicken or beans and cook until warmed through. Add lemon juice (if using) and taste for seasoning.
    • Ladle the soup into bowls, top with freshly grated Parmesan, and serve with crusty buttered bread. Garnish each bowl with parsley and dill. Enjoy!

  9. Remembering │ You Are The Magic

    Season 6, Episode 155

    Show notes

Have you ever considered that the spiritual journey might be less about “becoming” and more about “remembering”? At one time, we understood the connection to our ancestors. We felt a kinship with the sacred lands. We understood that we had a direct link to the Divine. Over generations, we have lost this inner wisdom, we’ve forgotten that the magic is within us. As we walk through the forest, reflect on the lineage you carry within and the powerful connection you hold deep in your bones. It’s time to unearth the truth, it’s time to remember!

Have you ever felt like an imposter in your own life and practice? Do you find yourself waiting for permission to claim the identities you know to be true? Far too many of us are failing to fully step into our own lives. We make art, but are afraid to call ourselves artists. We write poetry, but never call ourselves writers. We engage in witchy practices but avoid the identity of witch, even when we wish to claim it. We forget that honest practice and intentional participation are often more important that mastery. You don't need to be an expert to engage, you must simply show up with honesty and integrity. As we wander through the sweltering summer woods, consider the areas where you have avoided taking up space.

  14. Lammas Harvest │ Seed to Bread

    Season 6, Episode 150

    Show notes

Lammas, also known as, Lughnasadh is a time for appreciating the abundance of the season. It’s a moment to rejoice in the bounty before us. But what needs to happen to reach this point of abundance? All too often, we overlook the fact that current abundance comes from a period of past labor. We can’t enjoy the fruits if we don’t put in the work. Mother Nature demonstrates this process beautifully. Consider the journey a wheat seed must take in order to become a loaf of bread. Many small, incremental steps must occur in order for the bread to arrive on your table. It’s easy to forget this lesson when we embark on goals in our own lives. As we journey through the damp summer woods, consider the seeds you’d like to plant and tend this Lughnasadh.

  15. High & Low Magic │ Crafting a Practice

    Season 6, Episode 149

    Show notes

What does a witchy practice look like? Are there a specific set of rules we must follow? These are questions that many witchy-leaning folks tend to ask, especially when they're in the early stages of crafting a practice. Depending on one's approach, a witchcraft practice might look highly structured and precise or down-to-earth and unfussy. You may be drawn to intricate tools used by many high magic practitioners. Or you may like the everyday items found in your environment often favored by low magic practitioners. Some individuals adhere to a traditional lineage, while others prefer the folk magic of their ancestors. You may find comfort choosing a specific niche; such as, green, kitchen, or elemental witchery. Or you might seek out a more eclectic path, mixing and matching rituals as you see fit. There's no one "right" way to craft a practice. As we listen to the chirping cicadas, consider the practices that speak to your soul, that is the path for you.

  16. Playing Small │ Embodied Expansion

    Season 6, Episode 148

    Show notes

Why do we feel the need to play small in our lives? What keeps us from sharing our gifts and living in our fullness? It turns out that the nervous system impacts our expression more than we might have realized. We’re wired for survival and safety, so stepping outside of the box, even to take a healthy risk, feels deeply dangerous. Knowing this, is there a way to expand oneself while also acknowledging the human need to stay protected? As we wander through the forest, consider your own narrative. Have you chosen to stay hidden? If so, are you ready to emerge into the fullness of who you came here to be?
