    Season 1, Episode 271

    Show notes

What if finishing a reading isn’t the end of the activity, but rather the moment when the real language work begins? Too often, students answer a few comprehension questions and then move on, leaving lots of opportunities behind. In this final episode of our three-part reading series, we’ll explore how to take students from understanding a text to using language in meaningful ways. I share practical post-reading routines, ways to extend interpretive input into communication, and ideas you can adapt for any proficiency level.

  4. During Reading Routines and Activities That Support Comprehension

    Season 1, Episode 270

    Show notes

    #270

What happens when students start reading—and within thirty seconds, they’re stuck on every unfamiliar word? A reading that should build language can quickly turn into a vocabulary scavenger hunt, with students translating instead of understanding. In this episode, we’re moving from preparation into what happens during reading. We’ll explore how to keep students focused on meaning, maintain engagement, and interact with texts in purposeful ways. You’ll get five practical routines you can adapt across proficiency levels and use in your classroom right away.

    Topics in this Episode:

    • Our job is to help students interact with the text in ways that build confidence and keep them focused on meaning.
    • Instead of constantly checking, "Did they get it?" We're asking,"What support will help them get it?"
    • 5 During Reading Activities that Build Comprehension: Read in Chunks, Give Students a Focus Task, Margin Thinking, Text Scavenger Hunt, Stop and Talk
    • Adapting these activities across proficiency levels
    • Mistakes to avoid

  5. Before Reading Routines that Build Confidence and Curiosity

    Season 1, Episode 269

    Show notes

    #269

Have you ever found what seems like the perfect reading for your students, only to watch them immediately react with some form of “I don’t understand this?” Sometimes the problem isn’t the text, it’s that students are not prepared to read it. In this episode, we’re kicking off a three-part series on reading by focusing on what happens before students even read the first sentence. We’ll look at why preparation matters, five simple pre-reading activities, and how to help students approach a text with more confidence.

    Topics in this Episode:

    • Sometimes students don't struggle with reading because the text is too difficult, but because they are not prepared to read it and lack the confidence to take it on.
    • Once we change the purpose of reading, we also change how we prepare students.
    • Preparation helps students build interest., activate background knowledge, preview essential vocabulary and structures., develop a purpose for reading.
    • 5 Pre-Reading Routines: Picture Predictions, Title Talk, Essential Vocabulary, PersonalConnection, Reason for Reading
    • Mistakes to avoid
    • "A Day in the Market" Reading Text (Spanish, French)

In a recent episode, I explored how intentional opening routines can help us make the most of those first few minutes of class. Today, we’re continuing that conversation with Rosa Casado, a Spanish teacher in New Jersey, who shares how she does this in her classroom. We talk about what makes an opening activity effective for her students, how routines build engagement, adapting them for different proficiency levels, and simple activities you can use today.

    Topics in this Episode:

    • why are the first five minutes of class so important and what changes when teachers become more intentional about them
    • what makes a great opening activity and the biggest mistake teachers make
    • routines that help create more engagement and how long it usually take for students to buy into a new routine

  7. Effective Classroom Routines: A Strong End to Class

    Season 1, Episode 267

    Show notes

    #267

What if the last five minutes of your class could be just as intentional as the first five? Too often, the end of a lesson becomes a race to the bell—packing up, assigning homework, answering last-minute questions, and trying to squeeze in one more thing. But a strong ending can do much more than close the lesson. In this episode, we’ll explore simple end-of-class routines that reinforce proficiency, give students a final opportunity to communicate, and help you end every lesson with purpose.

    Topics in this Episode:

    • For many of us, the end of class feels reactive rather than intentional. But what if those last five minutes could be valuable parts of the lesson?
    • Instead of thinking about the end of class as cleanup time, let's think about it as consolidation time.
    • An effective closing routine should: Help students reflect. Provide one final opportunity to use language. Lower stress rather than create another quiz. Help the teacher gather evidence of learning. Prepare students for the next lesson.
    • Routines for strong end to class: One more conversation, Can-Do reflexion, Exit Ticket with purpose, Looking ahead
    • None of them are busywork.
    • Every one gives students another meaningful interaction with language.
    • Common mistakes to avoid
    • Action steps
    • Quick Win Courses That Support Routines in the Language Classroom:

    • Daily Strategies That Build Comprehension
    • No-Prep Speaking or Writing Tasks

  8. Effective Classroom Routines: Participation

    Season 1, Episode 266

    Show notes

    #266

What if “participation” in your language classroom doesn’t actually mean what you think it does? A few students raising their hands, answering questions, and volunteering often looks like engagement—but what about everyone else? In this episode, we’ll take a closer look at what meaningful participation really looks like through the lens of proficiency. You’ll discover simple routines that get more students communicating, create multiple pathways to participate, and help you move beyond relying on the same confident voices.

    Topics in this Episode:

    • Participation should be defined as evidence of engagement with language and meaning, not simply verbal output.
    • Common reasons participation breaks down: Expectations are unclear; Only one participation option exists; Participation rewards personality: Outgoing student
    • Instead of asking "How do I get more kids talking?" Maybe the better question is..."How do I design the lesson so participation is unavoidable?"
    • Characteristic of effective participation: Visible, Structured, Supported, Purposeful
    • Routines that support participation: Think, Write, Share; Partner First; Choice, Reactions
    • Common mistakes to avoid
    • Action steps
    • Participation That Works for All Students

What if the first five minutes of class could set the tone for everything that follows? Those opening moments are easy to overlook, but they can be some of the most powerful minutes of our lesson. 20. 5 Things You Can Do This Summer to Be Ready for the New School Year

    Season 1, Episode 254

    Show notes

    #254

When was the last time you had enough time to actually think about your teaching instead of just keeping up with it? If you're like most language teachers, the school year is a constant cycle of planning lessons, grading, answering emails, attending meetings, and preparing for the next day. Summer offers something different: space. Space to reflect, learn, create, and prepare for the kind of teaching you want to do next year. But I also know that summer doesn't look the same for everyone. In this episode, I'm sharing five ways language teachers can use whatever time they have this summer to grow professionally without sacrificing the rest and balance they deserve.

    Topics in this Episode:

    • summer is one of the few opportunities teachers have to work on their teaching instead of simply surviving their teaching
    • five things language teachers can do during the summer that are genuinely difficult to find time for during the school year.

    • reflect on what actually worked this year
    • learn one new teaching skill deeply instead of ten superficially
    • explore ideas you've been curious about all year
    • start next year feeling prepared instead of panicked

    • Ready For Tomorrow Quick Win Course

A Few Ways We Can Work Together:

    • Ready For Tomorrow Quick Win PD for Individual Teachers
    • On-Site or Virtual Workshops for Language Departments
    • Self-Paced Program for For Language Departments
