How Yacht Maintenance Protects Resale Value | Yacht Maintenance Unhinged
Show notes
The maintenance decisions made throughout a yacht’s life can shape its value when it comes to selling.
On board Legacy, a 112-foot Westport, host Tyler Wilson speaks with Andy Miles of Miles Yacht Group and Captain Robert Sybrant of Sybrant Marine Services about protecting a yacht’s condition, supporting its crew and managing the work owners rarely see.
Andy explains how deferred maintenance can affect buyer confidence, resale negotiations and time on the market. Robert draws on four generations of family experience in yachting to discuss craftsmanship, practical training and the leadership that helps crew take pride in their work.
The conversation explores matching maintenance programmes to a vessel’s size and use, helping owners understand the workload, and passing specialist skills to the next generation.

Buried at Sea: Who Protects Yacht Crew? | Ryan Melogy | Bonus Episode | UNCENSORED
Show notes
What happens when yacht crew are told to report abuse, but the very systems responsible for protecting them fail to act?
In this special bonus episode of Buried at Sea, UNCENSORED host Marién Sarriera reunites with maritime lawyer and advocate Ryan Melogy to examine what meaningful accountability could look like across the international yachting industry.
Following the three-part series exposing abuse, institutional silence and the fight for maritime reform, this conversation turns directly to yacht crew and the protections that remain uncertain or difficult to access.
Ryan explains how the Safer Seas Act has changed reporting and investigations aboard US-flagged vessels, why independent third-party investigations matter, and what it would take to strengthen accountability across different flag states and jurisdictions.
Marién brings her own experiences of reporting sexual harassment and assault in yachting, confronting a system where complaints can disappear into management offices, legal departments and non-disclosure agreements.
Together, they examine the responsibility of witnesses and bystanders, the fear of professional retaliation, the isolation faced by whistleblowers, and the uncomfortable reality of an industry where protecting reputations can take priority over protecting people.
The discussion also addresses the importance of documenting abuse, supporting those who come forward, and building independent reporting structures that crew can trust.
This bonus episode concludes Buried at Sea: Exposing Abuse, Challenging Power, Demanding Accountability, with a question the global yachting industry can no longer afford to ignore:
Who protects yacht crew when the people responsible for their safety are part of the problem?

A Life Reinvented: Howard Scott on Yacht Ownership, Rescue at Sea and Starting Again | Yachting USA
Show notes
After three decades practising law in Georgia, Howard Scott stepped away from the courtroom and began a different chapter, one shaped by classic yachts, Caribbean adventures, writing and the people he met along the way.
In this episode of Yachting USA, Howard joins host Rick Thomas to share the experiences behind that transformation, including a frightening loss of propulsion offshore and a nighttime encounter with an overturned freighter whose surviving crew needed help.
Their conversation explores the rewards and responsibilities of owning classic Burger yachts, the relationships between owners and crew, and the judgement and teamwork that matter when things go wrong at sea.
Howard also reflects on losing his father to alcoholism, his own decision to stop drinking, and how experiences from his legal career and years on the water inspired his novels, Rascal on the Run and Rascal’s Redemption. Along the way, he explains how an unexpected conversation helped launch the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.
A personal conversation about changing direction, recognising opportunity and finding the courage to pursue a different life.

Superyachts Behind the Glamour | Captain Ronny Roskosch | Yachting Confidential
Show notes
What does it take to make a superyacht experience feel effortless, and what do guests rarely see behind the scenes?
Sabrina van Maltha welcomes Captain Ronny M. Roskosch to Yachting Confidential for a candid conversation about the people, pressures and responsibilities behind luxury yachting, drawing on his three decades at sea across commercial shipping, deep-sea diving and superyachts.
Ronny discusses the trust between captains and owners, the reality of yacht maintenance budgets, and the decisions that keep guests and crew safe while delivering the experience everyone expects.
He also explores crew fatigue, motivation and living conditions, the importance of honest communication, and why a seemingly simple charter request beginning with “Can we just…?” can create hours of work.
Alongside the challenges, Ronny shares the moments that keep him passionate about life at sea, from quiet night passages to creating charter experiences that guests remember for years.
An experienced captain’s perspective on what it means to lead a crew, manage expectations and take responsibility for a multimillion-euro vessel.

From Black Pearl to Buckingham Palace: Inside Superyachting | On The Bridge
Show notes
Sailing Black Pearl through heavy weather, taking command of a superyacht, building a business from a barn and finding yourself at Buckingham Palace are experiences few people share, but each offers a revealing perspective on the world behind the vessels.
In this special On The Bridge compilation, Alicia Store, COO of dsnm Ltd, brings together standout moments and previously unseen excerpts from conversations with the captains, entrepreneurs and specialists whose working lives tell the wider story of superyachting.
Derek Munro recalls Black Pearl’s extraordinary capabilities under sail, while Captain Olly Lewis describes the responsibility, pride and satisfaction that keep him passionate about command. OCCAM Marine founders Lee Stevenson and Giles Frankal explain how trusted relationships helped turn their experience at sea into a growing business ashore.
Gill Rodrigues considers the vital role yacht crew play in ocean conservation, Francesca Webster explores changing expectations of yacht ownership, and Cally Cooper discusses what physiological data can reveal about crew stress and recovery. Conrad Empson explains the thinking behind better recruitment checks, while Master Mariner Paul Shepherd shares why confidential incident reporting can help turn one person’s experience into a lesson for the wider industry.
There are personal milestones, too, as Alicia and Dave Store reflect on the recognition that took them to Buckingham Palace, and Captain Chris Halligan recalls the move from commercial shipping to a career in superyachts.
Drawn from separate interviews across the series, these conversations offer an introduction to the people, decisions and relationships behind life in yachting.

Unspoken at Sea: Sexual Misconduct, Psychological Safety & Industry Change | Sea Views
Show notes
Sexual misconduct, harassment and abuse at sea are not new problems, but much of what happens onboard may never reach a formal reporting system.
In this episode of Sea Views, Julia Gosling is joined by Susanne Justesen, Director of Human Sustainability at the Global Maritime Forum, and Jeremy Sutton, Chief Executive of Swire Shipping and newly announced co-chair of the All Aboard Alliance, to examine Unspoken, an initiative designed to understand the experiences that existing reporting systems may never capture.
Unspoken invites seafarers of all ranks and trades to share their experiences anonymously and confidentially, with a particular focus on sexual misconduct. It is not intended to replace company grievance procedures, whistleblowing channels or established reporting systems, but to build a clearer picture of what is happening at sea and use those lived experiences to help shape stronger approaches to prevention, response and accountability.
The conversation explores why psychological safety depends not only on whether people trust their colleagues or management, but whether they trust what will happen after they speak up; why the personal risks of reporting can sometimes feel greater than the potential benefits; and how maritime companies can work together rather than attempting to solve industry-wide problems in isolation.
Jeremy also discusses how collaboration through the All Aboard Alliance challenged Swire Shipping’s own thinking around gender balance onboard, including a shift towards creating stronger concentrations of female seafarers on fewer vessels rather than spreading small numbers across a wider fleet. Swire Shipping currently has around 15% female seafarers and has set a target of 20% by 2030.
Susanne looks further ahead to the development of recognised standards around safety, health, inclusion and wellbeing, with an ambition to create accountability that extends beyond individual shipowners and ultimately reaches across the wider maritime supply chain.
This is a conversation about the things maritime has too often left unspoken, but also about what can happen when companies are prepared to examine uncomfortable realities, learn from one another and turn that knowledge into measurable change.

Yacht Safety Beyond Paperwork | Antoine Capstick | The Crew Car
Show notes
What does a completed safety checklist tell us about a crew’s readiness when something actually goes wrong?
Captain James Battey welcomes captain, author and former Designated Person Ashore Antoine Capstick to The Crew Car for a frank conversation about yacht safety management, practical seamanship and the distinction between documented compliance and operational readiness.
Antoine questions whether recorded hours of rest reflect actual sleep, how closely prescribed drills resemble real emergencies, and why recruitment, competence and the ability to recognise danger deserve greater attention when assessing a vessel’s safety.
Their conversation also follows his unconventional journey from commercial fishing and sailing instruction to captaining Mangustas, writing practical maritime guides, establishing a fuel business and helping owners develop yacht management arrangements.
With more than twenty years of friendship behind them, James and Antoine bring dry humour, personal stories and direct operational experience to a discussion about the people and decisions behind the paperwork.

UK PSSR Training Update: 31 March 2027 Deadline | Chris O’Flaherty | Forward Watch
Show notes
Already completed your PSSR training? The UK’s updated requirements mean you may still need to take action before 31 March 2027.
In this episode of Forward Watch, Karine Rayson, Director of The Crew Coach, welcomes back Captain Chris O’Flaherty, Senior Technical Adviser and Head of IMO Delegation at The Nautical Institute, to explain the PSSR training update and what it means for captains, crew and yacht management.
Their conversation explores MGN 718, the prevention of violence and harassment at sea, and how the revised requirements connect with certificate revalidation, inspections and eligibility to work onboard. Chris also explains “presumed compliance”, the responsibilities of masters and managers, and whether other flag administrations could follow the UK’s approach.
Beyond the training requirements, they examine how bullying, stress and poor sleep can affect judgement and decision-making on the bridge, and why crew wellbeing belongs at the centre of maritime safety.
UK TRAINING UPDATE
Affected seafarers must complete the required additional training by 31 March 2027. The MCA’s free OneOcean module, “Prevention and Response to Violence & Harassment” (0900), takes approximately one hour.
Holders of MCA-approved PSSR certificates dated on or after 1 January 2026 do not need the supplementary module. Certain earlier qualifying training is also accepted. Check MGN 718 for the full requirements, exceptions and access instructions.

Experiences, Not Charters: Alicia Mckay On Odyssia, Dubai Yacht Events & F1 Hospitality | Yachting Confidential
Show notes
In Dubai, luxury clients do not need another rooftop, another ballroom or another restaurant they have already seen ten times before. They need an experience that feels private, considered, impossible to replicate and completely seamless from the moment they arrive.
In this episode of Yachting Confidential, Sabrina van Maltha speaks with Alicia Mckay, Founder of Odyssia, about the world of luxury yacht events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where yachts become private stages for hospitality, brand experiences, corporate client entertainment and unforgettable celebrations.
Alicia shares how her background in luxury hospitality, fine dining and yacht catering led her into full-scale yacht event management, from sourcing the right vessel and planning the catering to managing staffing, entertainment, branding, production, guest flow and the tiny details that shape the entire experience.
The conversation goes behind the scenes of what Alicia calls “precision arranged chaos,” from tight setup windows and limited galley space to site visits, crew coordination, specialist service teams and the pressure of delivering flawless events for clients who expect everything to look effortless.
Sabrina and Alicia also explore why Dubai offers such a unique yacht event proposition, how corporate clients are using yachts as an alternative to traditional venues, what makes Abu Dhabi Grand Prix yacht hospitality at Yas Marina so powerful, and why Formula 1 has become one of the most exciting stages for luxury brand activations in the region.
From private dinners and corporate events to full brand takeovers and F1 yacht hospitality, this is a sharp look at how Odyssia is helping redefine what luxury yacht experiences can be.

Malta’s Maritime Framework: Law, Trust & the Strength Behind the Flag | Maritime Legal
Show notes
What makes a maritime flag worth choosing, and what makes owners stay?
In this edition of Maritime Legal, Malta’s Minister for Sustainable Mobility, Hon. Dr Chris Bonett MP, joins host Dr Jessica Galea, Partner and Head of Yachting at Dingli & Dingli Law Firm, for a wide-ranging conversation about the legal, regulatory and institutional framework behind one of the world’s most recognised maritime jurisdictions.
At the centre of the discussion is a simple principle: the strength of a flag depends on far more than speed, cost or the number of vessels on its register. It depends on legal certainty, regulatory integrity, professional expertise and the confidence owners can place in the jurisdiction long after registration is complete.
Dr Bonett explains how Malta’s close relationship between government, the Malta Ship Registry and the private maritime sector has helped the country respond to an evolving international industry while maintaining the standards attached to the Malta flag.
“Being very quick and very cheap attracts clients. Being serious is what keeps them.”
The conversation explores Malta’s approach to scrutiny and registration, the protection a credible flag provides to yacht and ship owners, the role of the Minister under Malta’s maritime framework, the importance of keeping the Registry within public administration, and how digitalisation and decarbonisation are shaping the next stage of Malta’s maritime development.

Sailing Yacht Black Pearl: Behind The Project with Derek Munro | On The Bridge
Show notes
What does it really take to help deliver one of the most ambitious sailing yacht projects ever built?
In this episode of On The Bridge, Alicia Store, Chief Operating Officer at dsnm Ltd, speaks with Derek Munro of Divergent Yachting, Project Manager and Owner’s Representative for sailing yacht Black Pearl.
Black Pearl is one of the most recognisable sailing yachts in the world, but behind her profile is a much deeper story of vision, engineering, experimentation, secrecy, pressure and persistence.
Derek shares how he became involved in the project, why the yacht evolved from an original 95-metre concept into the 105-metre Black Pearl known today, and what it was like working on a build where so much had never been done before.
The conversation explores the DynaRig system, the shift from hydraulic to electric power, the extraordinary performance of Black Pearl’s regeneration system, and the research that went into solar, battery storage and future technology.
Alicia and Derek also discuss the sustainability thinking behind the yacht, including reduced fuel use, technical water treatment, heat recovery, double insulation, double-glazed windows, reduced HVAC demand and the onboard culture that grew around the owner’s vision.
There is also rare insight into the owner himself: his engineering mind, his relentless eye for detail, his personal involvement in the design and build, and the way his vision shaped everything from major systems to the smallest interior and exterior decisions.
This is a conversation about yacht building at the highest level, but it is also about people. The owner who wanted to push boundaries. The shipyard that had to make the impossible possible. The engineers, designers and crew who carried the vision forward. And the project manager trying to hold all of those moving parts together.
Black Pearl is not just famous because she is seen.
She is significant because of what happened behind the project.

SARS, Tax Residency & Offshore Income: What South African Yacht Crew Need to Know | Rich AF
Show notes
“SARS is like Liam Neeson, but about your money.”
In Part Two of this South African yacht crew tax conversation, Rich AF host Charl Minnaar is joined again by Jamie Hadley-Grave CA(SA), founder of Hadley-Grave Accounting & Tax, to go beyond the basics and into the tax questions that start to matter once yacht crew build careers, assets and lives outside South Africa.
What actually happens when you cease South African tax residency? Can you keep property or investments back home? Does income become invisible to SARS because it is paid into an offshore account? What happens when you return to South Africa after years overseas? And what do you do if you have spent years putting your tax obligations off?
Charl and Jamie revisit the seafarer and foreign employment exemptions before digging into the evidence SARS may require, the physical presence test, ceasing tax residency, deemed disposal and capital gains tax, double taxation agreements, offshore income, voluntary disclosure and outstanding returns.
They also look at one of the biggest questions for yacht crew using their overseas earnings to build long-term wealth: whether a South African non-resident can continue buying property and earning rental income in South Africa, and how bond interest and other property expenses affect the tax calculation.
It is practical, very South African and built around the questions yacht crew are actually asking once “I work overseas” stops being a simple answer to anything involving tax.

Yacht Crew Standards: Compliance vs Reality | Kirsty Porritt | The Crew Car
Show notes
Does yachting have industry standards, or does it have industry minimums?
In this episode of The Crew Car, Captain James Battey sits down with Kirsty Porritt for a conversation about crew employment, MLC compliance, management responsibility and the gap that can exist between regulatory requirements and the operational reality onboard.
Kirsty brings experience across superyacht client and operations management, business development, crew employment, crew HR, MLC and compliance, offering a perspective that sits between owners, management companies, captains and crew.
The conversation looks at whether the Maritime Labour Convention adequately reflects the realities of modern yachting, particularly when the operational demands of a private 24-metre yacht can be completely different from those of a commercially operated 100-metre vessel.
They discuss Seafarer Employment Agreements, delayed wages, crew retention, hours of rest, management company accountability and why protecting crew and protecting owners should not be treated as opposing objectives.
They also examine the difference between minimum safe manning and the actual number of people required to deliver guest service, water sports, overnight passages and demanding charter programmes safely.
Kirsty questions whether yachting can realistically have one universal industry standard when every yacht, owner and programme is different, suggesting that good practice may be the more important benchmark.
James takes that argument further: too often, what the industry calls a standard is actually only the minimum.
Because ultimately, happy crew, happy boat, happy owner.

Show notes
What does marine innovation look like before it becomes the technology everyone is talking about?
As the countdown to FLIBS 2026 begins, The Blue Economy looks back at three companies selected as nominees for the 2025 Marine Research Hub Innovation & Sustainability Awards, revisiting the ideas, technologies and people that caught the attention of the awards programme one year ago.
Host Katherine O’Fallon, Executive Director of the Marine Research Hub, returns to conversations recorded at the 2025 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with iHoy Captain, Remigo and Vessev.

Dubai’s Luxury Network: Sian Myburgh On Trusted Access, Events & Yacht Charter | Yachting Confidential
Show notes
In Dubai, luxury is not only about where a client goes. It is about who knows how to make the right experience happen, who understands the brief, who can move quickly without losing discretion, and who has built the trusted network behind the scenes.
In this episode of Yachting Confidential, Sabrina van Maltha speaks with Sian Myburgh, Head of Business Development at Miss Jones Group Dubai, about the people behind many of the region’s most refined luxury decisions.
Sian explains how Miss Jones supports EAs, PAs and corporate event bookers by connecting them with trusted venues, suppliers, partners and experiences across Dubai, the UAE and beyond. From private dinners and major corporate events to ultra-high-net-worth requests, luxury hospitality, face-to-face relationships and yacht charter, the conversation explores what it really takes to deliver at the highest level.
The episode also looks at why Dubai has become such a powerful market for service-led luxury, why personal recommendations still matter in a world of online searches and AI, how trust is earned or lost, and where yachts and yacht charter fit into the world of private client experiences.
From Mediterranean yacht charters to Dubai corporate events, Sian offers a clear view into the relationships, expectations and trusted access shaping modern luxury.

Yacht Maintenance: What Cutting Corners Really Costs | Yacht Maintenance Unhinged
Show notes
Salt, sun, oxidation, hard use and constant pressure to keep everything running. Maintaining a superyacht never stops. But what happens when budgets tighten, crew are stretched and cutting corners starts creating bigger problems than it solves?
In this episode of Yacht Maintenance Unhinged, Tyler Wilson sits down with Sam Powell, Toy Shop Sales Director at National Marine Suppliers, at Superyacht Village in Fort Lauderdale for a candid conversation about yacht maintenance, crew knowledge, budgets, logistics and what it really takes to keep a vessel operational.
After more than a decade with National Marine Suppliers, Sam has worked across almost every corner of yacht support, from deck and engineering supplies to new builds, yacht toys, logistics and emergency problem-solving. That experience has given him a unique view of what happens onboard when maintenance is properly planned, and what happens when it is not.
Tyler and Sam discuss the importance of product knowledge and crew training, including the damage caused by using the wrong chemical on PVC, repeatedly polishing a surface instead of properly maintaining it, incorrectly treating teak or handing an inexperienced crew member a product without explaining how to use it.
Sam also shares the story of accidentally sending a jet ski to the wrong Caribbean island, the extraordinary logistics required to charter a plane and get it to the yacht before charter, and how openly admitting the mistake and presenting solutions ultimately turned a major problem into a stronger relationship with the owner.
Because in yachting, problems are inevitable. What matters is having the knowledge, communication and people around you to solve them.
