  1. How to Tell Market Signals From ADHD Restlessness

    Episode 339

    Show notes

As an ADHD entrepreneur, it can be difficult to know whether a sudden urge to change your business is strategic insight or ADHD restlessness. In this episode, we explore how ADHD business strategy decisions can easily be influenced by emotion, excitement, or frustration.

Through six relatable business owner scenarios, you'll learn how to identify genuine market signals, avoid unnecessary ADHD business pivots, and make clearer decisions as a business owner with ADHD. Walk away with practical questions and real-world checks to help you evaluate opportunities with greater confidence and consistency.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

0:00 - ADHD Decision Making: Market Signal or Restlessness?

3:41 - How ADHD Founders Make Decisions From Compliments

11:49 - ADHD Business Pivots and Shower Idea Traps

17:55 - Managing a Team With ADHD by Listening

25:00 - Six ADHD Business Strategy Moves After Rejection

Here are my top takeaways for making smarter decisions in your business:

    • Check the Source: Is it one person’s compliment, or a pattern of true market demand?
    • Time Your Response: Did the idea arrive after a tough moment or a big finish? Give your emotions space before taking action.
    • Look for Patterns: Real market signals build gradually and show up in your inbox, referrals, and repeat questions—not just in your shower thoughts.
    • Validate with Data: Before you overhaul everything, ask outside perspectives—especially your clients and your team.
    • Test Small First: Before a massive rebrand or new offer, experiment with a limited change (like a price increase) and watch the results.
    • Team Involvement: Your team is your front line for feedback; bring their insights into every strategy session, and make it safe for them to tell you the truth, not just what you want to hear.

    Fun fact from the episode:

ADHD brains tend to rank experiences by intensity, not frequency. This means a single, flattering compliment from a client can feel as weighty as a dozen ordinary inquiries, making it easy to misinterpret what’s truly happening.

If you’re itching to rebrand, pivot, or roll out that sparkly new offer, run these tests first.

    Three Quick Checks

    • Problem first or idea first?
    • What happened in the last 2 weeks?
    • Who would notice if I didn’t change anything?

    Three Outside Reads

    • Ask the person who suggested the change and two who didn’t.
    • Ask “why the no?” after rejection.
    • Ask your team: What do clients ask for that we don’t do?

For service businesses with a waitlist: Raise your rates for new clients and listen to the market’s response.

  2. Is ADHD an Advantage in Business? It Depends Who You Are

    Episode 338

    Show notes

Why do so many ADHD entrepreneurs launch with ease, then lose steam once the business needs steady management? Researcher Johan Wiklund joins Diann Wingert on the ADHD-ish podcast to share new findings.

If you’re a business owner with ADHD, boredom and overcommitting may sound familiar. You’ll hear practical ADHD business strategy for scaling a business with ADHD: hand off the daily grind, outsource deadlines, use AI for paperwork, and build support that guards against burnout. Women with ADHD get honest, grounded guidance to turn their neurodivergent strengths into extraordinary business success.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - The ADHD Edge Nobody Talks About

03:18 - Why Some Thrive and Others Struggle

07:42 - Find Your Business Sweet Spot

12:35 - Creativity Is Not Enough

18:21 - Fast Decisions, Costly Mistakes

24:46 - Leading Without Burning Out

31:14 - The Hidden Price of Success

    38:52 - Build a Business That Fits

Johan and I get into it:

    • Why women with ADHD were the least likely group in the study to start a business, and whether late-diagnosed women are the exception to his findings or invisible in them. His answer: invisible.
    • Why ADHD helps you start a business and works against you once it's running. One word: boredom. And why the founder with ADHD often shouldn't stay on as CEO.
    • What you need more than encouragement. Johan says it's support, whether it comes from a coach, a spouse, a business partner, or AI, which he now uses for his forms, his finances and his inbox.
    • Burnout and the habit of doing twice as much. Why women who leave corporate bring it into their own business, and the parking-lot rule I use before I say yes to anything.
    • Creativity or novelty? Why Johan would rather talk about improvising and doing new things than argue over whether people with ADHD are more creative.
    • The entrepreneur who shaped him most: his mother, the binders she kept for everything, and the book chapter he wrote called "Research Equals Me-Search."

    Fun fact from the episode:

Johan has set up an AI skill to clean out his inbox every morning. He still has more than 100 emails sitting there, and he figures about 70 of them need him. He's working on it.

  3. The Real Cost of ADHD Novelty Seeking in Your Business

    Episode 337

    Show notes

What if you treated every new idea, rebrand, or business pivot like a client change order? In this solo episode of ADHD-ish™, Diann explores the hidden costs of ADHD novelty-seeking and why those costs are often difficult to recognize in the moment.

Tune in and learn how ADHD decision making affects business growth, why experience doesn't always prevent repeated patterns, and how to evaluate new opportunities more strategically. Diann also shares lessons from rebranding her podcast after 226 episodes and how ADHD business owners can make thoughtful changes without overlooking the real investment required.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Why ADHD Entrepreneurs Change Direction and the Hidden Costs

04:15 - The True Price of Rebranding for the ADHD Small Business Owner

09:30 - Evaluating ADHD Business Strategy Before You Pivot

14:45 - How ADHD Business Coaching Protects Your Revenue and Momentum

19:20 - Protecting the ADHD Founder from Constant Reinvention

In this episode, I'll answer these questions you didn't even know to ask:

The five costs business owners with ADHD don't keep track of, but should, when they change direction: what you throw out, what you redo, who you re-teach, what you never find out, and what it does to you.

    • Why changing course frequently leaves you with almost no data about what actually works
    • Why referral sources quietly stops sending people your way instead of speaking up or asking questions
    • Why the cost of ADHD novelty seeking never really registers (hint: it's a non-event, plus there's no running total)
    • Why you need a change log: a twenty-minute look-back that shows what your restarts have cost, and what survived every one of them
    • Why you also need a change order: five questions to ask yourself before your next name, niche, offer, price or platform change
    • Why the same habit runs through your offers, your pricing and your tech stack, never gets noticed and never changes (until now)

The cost of business rebranding rarely shows up on the day you make the change. It shows up as the referral that never came and the past client who couldn’t tell what you do now. Change is allowed. Unpriced change is the problem. Before you touch your website or open a design tool, answer these five questions on paper:

    • What gets thrown out that's still working? The sales page, the freebie, the testimonials, the content in the old language.
    • What has to be rebuilt? Estimate the hours, then double them.
    • Who has to be re-taught, by name? Not "my audience." The actual people who currently know how to describe you.
    • What question am I in the middle of answering that this change will erase? What experiment is still running?
    • What's the smallest version of this change that still gets me the new thing?

Then date it, and decide. It's not a waiting period, and it's not a veto. It tells you the price. You still get to buy it. You just know what you are paying for, ahead of time, not down the road.

  4. ADHD Founders: Stop Asking "Can I?" and Ask "How Can I?"

    Episode 336

    Show notes

In this episode, Diann Wingert and guest Phil Drinkwater dive deep into the intersection of the ADHD brain, neurodivergent shame, and business leadership. They explore how years of masking and internalized stigma impact founders, and why understanding these hidden layers is crucial for growth.

The conversation highlights powerful mental shifts, focusing on moving away from self-limiting doubts and transitioning from "can I?" to "how can I?". Tune in to discover actionable insights and strategies designed to help neurodivergent entrepreneurs overcome perfectionism, leverage cognitive frameworks, and build a business that truly supports their mind.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

0:00 - What running a company teaches you that coach training can't

4:15 - ADHD presentations and entrepreneurship: why combined type shows up more often

11:30 - "Can I?" versus "How can I?" and your only job as a founder

18:45 - Shame: Do you point it inward or outward?

25:10 - Attachment style at work, and the copy that attracted the wrong clients

33:20 - Pull the decisions forward: Procrastination has layers

41:05 - Working memory, the 32-path problem and mirrorboarding

48:30 - Perfectionism: Where it helps, where it doesn't, and hiring for attachment style

Phil and I get into it:

    • Phil's one-word shift that named the episode for us: "Can I?" is the fear. "How can I?" turns it into agency, and solves the ADHD inertia problem
    • Your only job as a founder. You don't have to do everything. You have to make sure everything gets done. Phil's advice is to fire bits of yourself, starting with the work you don't like and aren't good at.
    • Shame, and whether you point it inward or outward, and why Phil hears "high performance" as "I mask a lot."
    • Attachment style as a business issue. The founder whose copy kept attracting the wrong clients, the one whose Open Door Tuesday handed him ten extra spinning plates a week, and why your best team member may have a different attachment style than yours.
    • Designing an AuDHD work week. Phil's version of ADHD energy management when the ADHD half wants stimulation and the autistic half wants quiet: coaching days cut from five to four to three, plus a sleep mask and noise-canceling headphones between calls.

Fun fact from the episode: When a therapist first suggested Phil might be neurodivergent, he joined an online community and asked, "Do I just need to drink more coffee?" They told him, very kindly, that it's a different kind of stimulation he needs.

    Mentioned in this episode:

Alan Watts: The Story of the Chinese Farmer (video) - Mirrorboarding - The Highly Sensitive Person (Elaine Aron) - ADHD presentations (CHADD) - Attachment styles (Cleveland Clinic) - Body doubling (CHADD) -ClaudeCowork

  5. Beyond Motivation: Structuring Your Service Business for ADHD Highs and Lows

    Episode 335

    Show notes

Running a service business with ADHD means your energy and focus will fluctuate—and that’s not a character flaw, it’s a business model challenge. In this episode, Diann Wingert shares why resilience matters more than motivation.

You’ll learn how to build a “floor, not a ceiling” across visibility, delivery, money, and strategy so your business keeps moving even during low‑capacity weeks. These insights help ADHD small business owners and founders create sustainable systems that protect momentum and prevent burnout.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 – ADHD entrepreneur highs and lows

05:20 – ADHD business coaching and planned pauses

11:45 – Structuring service businesses for capacity shifts

18:10 – Floors vs ceilings in business resilience

24:30 – Sustainable growth through planned pivots

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to design your business for normal low-capacity fluctuations, not just crisis mode
    • Practical, step-by-step methods for setting the “floor” for visibility, delivery, money, and strategy
    • The reason your current systems probably break down when you need them most (hint: they were never built for the tough weeks)
    • The psychological block ADHD brains have with forward-planning—and how to outsmart it
    • Why most “reduced capacity” plans only address marketing, while money, strategy and delivery are overlooked
    • How to communicate these boundaries with clients up front, turning what could be perceived as a weakness into a sign of true professionalism

Not-so-Fun Fact : High-Capacity You Creates Unsustainable Systems

We start our business in a high-capacity state—full of ideas, clarity, and good intentions. Having ADHD means we have an impaired ability to imagine other neurological states than the one we are currently experiencing, causing a disconnect with our future low-capacity self.

That's why a couple of weeks of low mood-energy-motivation can trigger the belief we are in the wrong business and the urge to throw in the towel and start over with something new. What we need to do is build floors, not just fantasize about ceilings, or the same thing will happen with the next business.

These four business functions actually need a floor:

    • Visibility: This is the first to go when things get tough. My “floor” here? One recycled social post, or a single email to a real human. Something tiny but consistent.
    • Delivery: This is the trickiest. It feels like a betrayal to reduce what I deliver to clients, but as the podcast emphasized, negotiating a floor in advance—shorter meetings, async communication, or setting clear response times—turns a potential disaster into a professional, expected variation.
    • Money: Invoicing, chasing payments, running the business side. This cannot drop to zero. If I automate one thing, this is it. Unsent invoices don’t just cost money, they quietly undermine everything else.
    • Strategy: Maybe the one I used to ignore most. No big decisions during floor weeks. Defaults only. Don’t reinvent the wheel when energy’s low.

  6. ADHD, Anxiety and the 4 Drivers That Shape Sustainable Work

    Episode 334

    Show notes

Welcome to the ADHD-ish podcast, where we explore what it truly takes to build a thriving business when your brain is wired differently. In this episode, host Diann Wingert is joined by Morra Aarons-Mele to introduce the ATAMM framework; focusing on attention, time, agency, and motivation.

Many business owners with ADHD faces intense burnout by relying on anxiety-driven habits instead of honoring personal needs. This conversation provides practical strategies for establishing radical self-acceptance, mapping your unique chronotype, and shaping a sustainable ADHD business strategy.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 – Entrepreneur anxiety and ADHD drivers

05:10 – Coaching strategies for resilience in business

11:25 – Smarter growth tactics and ADHD business strategy

17:40 – Small business owner challenges and solutions

23:55 – Leadership focus: guiding teams with clarity

30:20 – Accountability and delegation tips for founders

36:35 – Scaling strategies that play to your strengths

42:50 – Burnout prevention and sustainable success habits

Morra shares insights from her ATAM framework, grounded in over two decades of research and thousands of interviews, which distills the struggles and success factors of neurodivergent professionals into four actionable domains:

    • Attention: Understanding your personal style, harnessing focus, and protecting against distractions.
    • Time: Navigating time blindness, building healthy schedules, and pacing to maximize presence and energy.
    • Agency: Having the power to structure your environment and processes in ways that support wellbeing.
    • Motivation: Identifying intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that actually work for you.

One surprising truth: Gaining control of your calendar, environment, and workflows doesn’t guarantee balance or fulfillment if you don’t understand your own wiring. In fact, you're more vulnerable to burnout because you're paying the "passion tax" and your brain doesn't have an "enoughness" monitor.

    Fun Fact From the Episode:

Did you know that delaying filling your gas tank (literally running on fumes) is an ADHD-ish trait? Not because of flakiness, but because life is more exciting when you turn everyday chores into a dopamine-driven game! Listen for this hilarious/ cringeworthy confession…

  7. Your Brand Needs Repetition, But Your ADHD Brain Needs Novelty: What's the Solution?

    Episode 333

    Show notes

Entrepreneurial ADHD brains crave novelty, often leading to constant rewrites of core messaging. Yet your audience has barely encountered your message, and reinvention blocks true recognition and authority.

Diann Wingert reveals how to keep claims consistent while channeling creativity into fresh angles. By building new doors into the same room, you achieve sustainable repetition that connects with your audience and grows your business.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Why Your Brand Needs Repetition but Your ADHD Brain Craves Novelty

05:00 - Why You Get Bored With Your Own Messaging Too Soon

12:00 - What to Keep Fixed in Your Brand and Messaging

20:00 - How to Use Novelty Without Changing Your Core Brand

28:00 - The Core Claim, SEO, and Building New Doors Into the Same Room

    Key takeaways:

    • Repetition is non-negotiable: Your audience hasn’t heard your core message nearly as many times as you have. Even the most engaged followers need 8+ exposures before it really sticks.
    • Novelty needs better boundaries: Put your creative energy into new stories, formats, and examples—but keep your core claim, signature frameworks, and offer language consistent for years, not weeks.
    • Build new doors, not new rooms: Use fresh angles to invite people in, but always lead them to the same core message. Changing your positioning too often kills your chance of becoming known, referred, and hired.

If you’re tempted to reinvent your message this month, pause and write your core claim in one sentence. Then, brainstorm three fresh “doors” (stories, formats, hooks) that point right back to it. Don’t let novelty wreck your focus—make it work FOR you.

  8. The Impact of Emotional & Intellectual Intensity on Business, Relationships & Life

    Episode 332

    Show notes

What if the problem isn’t that you’re too much—but that you’ve spent years trying to fit into environments that don’t understand your intensity? Diann Wingert and Imi Lo explore what emotional and intellectual intensity can look like, and why it often gets confused with ADHD, autism, giftedness, or other labels.

If you’ve ever felt misunderstood for feeling deeply, thinking intensely, asking too many questions, or struggling inside conventional systems, this conversation offers a different lens. You’ll learn how self-awareness, skillful communication, radical self-acceptance, and finding the right environments can help you work with your intensity rather than constantly judging yourself for it.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Introduction to Emotional and Intellectual Intensity in Business

05:52 - Navigating ADHD Entrepreneurship and High-Stakes Decisions

11:45 - The Role of ADHD Executive Function in Business Strategy

17:37 - Managing Cognitive Load and Avoiding ADHD Burnout

23:30 - Scaling a Business with ADHD and Team Leadership Dynamics

29:22 - How to Build a Sustainable Systems and ADHD Business Operations

35:15 - Fostering ADHD Self-Trust and Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

41:07 - Integrating Emotional Intensity for Long-Term ADHD Founder Success

    ‍ ‍

    Key takeaways:‍ ‍

Intensity is multi-dimensional: Intensity can be emotional (feeling deeply and persistently), intellectual (a hunger for knowledge and depth), or moral (strong principles and sensitivity to injustice). These can be visible or invisible and are often misunderstood by others.

Context matters more than labels: Before seeking a diagnosis or label, ask yourself if the real issue is a misfit with your environment. As Imi Lo shares, "Nothing is wrong with a plant that’s not growing in the wrong soil."

Strength & struggle go hand in hand: Intensity can lead to profound levels of creativity, empathy, and insight—but also overwhelm, isolation, and shame if not recognized or managed. The solution isn’t to shrink yourself, but to find (or create) environments where intensity is seen as an asset.

If you have internalized the message that you are "too much," consider this: Maybe your environment - not you - is the problem. Radical self acceptance, and the courage to stop apologizing for your intensity—could be your first step toward thriving.

  9. ADHD-Friendly Marketing: Staying Visible Even When You Can’t Show Up

    Episode 331

    Show notes

“Just be consistent” is frustrating advice for entrepreneurs with ADHD because capacity is anything but consistent. This episode examines why traditional marketing expectations can lead to overwork, burnout, or abandoning visibility altogether.

The Balanced Marketing Strategy introduces three complementary forms of marketing: algorithm-based, content-based, and relationship-based. Together, they create a more resilient visibility system that continues generating awareness, credibility, and opportunities during low-capacity weeks.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Introduction: ADHD Business Strategy & Visibility Realities

04:30 - Breaking the Cycle: ADHD Burnout Prevention in Marketing

10:15 - Building Sustainable Business Systems for ADHD Entrepreneurs

15:45 - Executive Function in Business: Streamlining Content Creation

    20:10 - Stepping Up as an ADHD CEO: Long-Term Growth & Self-Trust

Here’s the ADHD-friendly reframe: Stop chasing consistency through effort—and start building consistency through structure.

‍It’s all about setting up a system that keeps your business visible even when you’re having a low-capacity week with the Balanced Marketing Strategy which utilizes three types of marketing efforts:‍ ‍

    1. Algorithm-Based Marketing: SEO, social media, and anything that’s discoverable through a machine. The beauty? Content you create once can keep working for you for months or even years.

    2. Content-Based Marketing: Your podcast, newsletter, blog—this is where your voice and expertise shine. It’s the main way you build connection and trust, but it does require creativity and energy. ‍

    3. Relationship-Based Marketing: Networking, referral partnerships, collaborations, guest appearances—the power of other people’s momentum carrying your visibility when you can’t.

    ‍How does it work?

These categories almost never all fail at once. If you're running low on capacity for content, your relationships or algorithmic assets can keep generating leads and visibility, and vice versa. Far too many business owners with ADHD find out the hard way that putting all their promotion eggs in one basket makes them vulnerable to complete visibility collapse during low-energy periods.

‍Your Redundant (Not Balanced) Safety Net

Despite the name, the "Balanced" Marketing Strategy isn’t about splitting your effort evenly. It’s about building in redundancy, so your visibility never hinges on you always being ‘on’. It’s like having a backup generator for your business.

    ‍Try This Mini Audit‍ ‍

    ● Look back at your last 90 days of marketing activities.

    ● Sort them into: algorithm-based, content-based, or relationship-based.

    ● Find your weak spot (the thinnest category) ‍

    ● Start building out the thin one - just to a functional minimum.

‍What’s a “functional minimum?” One evergreen asset, three referral relationships, one quarterly guest appearance

  10. What Really Happens When Your Product Goes Viral

    Episode 330

    Show notes

What happens when explosive success turns your ADHD business strategy upside down? Dani Donovan returns to reveal the hidden reality of scaling a tool for neurodivergent communities and keeping up with sudden demand.

For every ADHD entrepreneur, founder, or business owner with ADHD navigating rapid growth, delegation struggles, and high cognitive load, this conversation offers actionable clarity.

Discover practical insights on ADHD business operations, accountability, and real-time decision-making when your business evolves faster than expected.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - How Viral Products Create Explosive Demand

06:00 - ADHD Product-Market Fit and Underserved Audiences

12:00 - Building and Launching a Viral Product

19:00 - Content Marketing, TikTok Virality and Storytelling

26:00 - Scaling Too Fast and Business Operations

33:00 - Perfectionism, Burnout and Entrepreneurial Growth

40:00 - Email Lists, Algorithms and Sustainable Business Growth

47:00 - Entrepreneurship, Autonomy and What Comes Next

    3 Key Takeaways:

    • Find—and serve—the underserved audience. When you truly solve a need for people who’ve been overlooked, you can create explosive demand. Building something specifically for the ADHD community, with real-life empathy and nuance, was the game-changer
    • Prepare to adapt at warp speed. Virality can supercharge your business, but also breaks systems you thought could scale. Managing inventory, support, and planning for unpredictable spikes is a different beast
    • Don’t skip the foundations—even if you’re “too busy.” Invest in core systems you own—like email lists—not just social media channels. Otherwise, you’re at the mercy of algorithms or outside platforms.

"Finding out you have ADHD as an adult feels like being told you suck at Mario Kart your entire life and then finding out your game generates 40 times more banana peels than it's supposed to"

    About the Anti-Planner:

Tapping into her own frustrations and the lived experiences of ADHD peers, Dani Donovan spent over 3,000 hours creating The Anti-Planner, calling it a “productivity spellbook.”

It is a lovingly designed, non-linear, highly personalized compendium of over 100 strategies for overcoming procrastination and building emotional resistance.

Dani obsessed over every detail: the comforting size, playful illustrations, durable faux-leather binding, gold foil, thick paper, pen loop, and rounded corners. It is gorgeous, practical, and nothing like all the planners you’ve bought and abandoned two weeks later.

    THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS: ‍

    1. Niche Down, Even When It Feels Wrong:

    2. Accept Your Wiring, Don't Fight It:

As an Obliger with ADHD traits and justice sensitivity, Kim needs external accountability and clear boundaries. She stopped wrestling with who she isn't and built systems for who she actually is. ‍

    3. Structure Your Business Around Energy Patterns, Not Just Targets

Kim's energy dips in winter. Instead of pushing through, she restructured which offers she promotes seasonally. Result: a sustainable business that honors her natural rhythms. This is the 5th pillar of the ADHD-ish Method™—Planned Pauses & Pivots.

  12. Your Overthinking ADHD Brain Is the Best Thing About Your Brand

    Episode 328

    Show notes

‍Kristina Flynn has had a psychiatrist since she was twelve, collected diagnoses like frequent flyer miles (anxiety, depression, OCD, bulimia, and more), and still didn't get an ADHD diagnosis until her thirties, after her daughter's birth blew up every workaround she'd been quietly running for two decades.

‍Now she runs Story EQ, where she helps people find the story underneath their work. Everybody tells you to stop overthinking. Kristina Flynn built a company on it.

‍We talk about why doing your own branding is a fool's errand (spoiler: your brain isn't primed for reality, it's primed for your perception of reality). We talk about the Mensa-level geniuses who sit across from her and say "I'm not that interesting."

‍We talk about the specific, weirdly universal terror of what your old colleagues will think. And we talk about AI — not as a voice replicator, but as something that can understand your context if you feed it properly.

‍Fair warning: if you're sitting on an abandoned rebrand, three different mission statements you don't believe, and a nagging sense that you should be further along by now — you're going to feel a little called out. Stay with us anyway. ‍

    WHAT’S INSIDE: ‍

    ● Why Your Old Story Isn’t the Whole Story: How narrative identity, negativity bias, and corporate conditioning have shaped the way you show up ‍

    ● The 4 Stories Framework (Stealable Worksheet): Start mapping your old story, bridge story, and how to shift from “it’s about me” to “it’s about them”

    ● Radical Self-Acceptance Checklist: 5 mindset shifts to finally move past shame, imposter feelings, and waiting for permission ‍

    ● Overthinking as an Asset: Quick exercises to turn rumination into action, content, and connection (instead of procrastination) ‍

  13. Stop Confusing Options for Opportunities: A Practical Guide to Decision Making for ADHD Entrepreneurs

    Episode 327

    Show notes

Ever find yourself saying yes to a new collaboration, tool, or project—then months later wondering how you got there? If you run a business (especially with an ADHD-ish™ brain), you’re not alone.

‍In this episode, I break down why our brains confuse options for opportunities, how dopamine clouds our judgment at the moment of the ask, and share a practical “screen door” filter to make better decisions going forward.

‍Dopamine is a talent scout, not a bookkeeper: That rush of excitement we feel with something new? It’s all about anticipation—not reality. The cost and maintenance of a new yes don’t hit until much later. The trick is to slow the yes.

‍Clever ways options pretend to be opportunities:

‍The Flattering Ask: feeling chosen and visible can feel like opportunity, but might be just an option that doesn’t fit your goals.

‍The Closing Door: artificial urgency and manufactured scarcity prey on impulsive decision-making.

‍The Adjacent Idea: our shiny new ideas often show up exactly when important work becomes tedious, tempting entrepreneurs to jump ship.

    ‍

Why is this so hard for ADHD brains?

‍Because dopamine is LOUD and it fires at anticipation, not the actual result. That new offer or collab invitation? It’s pure possibility—no fatigue, no disappointment, no downside at first. The evaluation part comes much later, usually after you’re already committed.

    Story Time

‍Diann once bought a high ticket course to “launch a high-ticket course,” and not only never opened it, but kept paying a monthly subscription for three (!) years (ADHD dopamine at work, folks—don’t feel bad, you’re not alone! 😂

‍Try this: The 4-Question "Screen Door" Filter

‍Before you say yes, ask yourself:

    • 1. What existing goal does this serve?
    • 2. What does it leverage that I’ve already built?
    • ‍3. What are the terms of this commitment?
    • ‍4. Does it survive 72 hours?

Nothing new gets a same-day yes. That 72-hour pause is where the real magic happens (and where many “opportunities” evaporate).

    ‍Start here:

    • *Make an idea parking lot for every new ask or idea.
    • *‍Practice the pause: “Let me check a couple things and get back to you.”
    • ‍*After 72 hours, run the 4-question test.

Some asks will quietly disappear. Others will become real, intentional decisions. Give it a try and notice how different your “yes” feels and the discomfort of waiting. That’s data.

    ‍

    Mantra for the week:

Every yes is not a purchase—it’s a subscription. Read the terms before you sign.

    ‍

But what about all the past decisions you’ve made that have made your business messy and chaotic?

    Fun Fact

Elizabeth shared a story about her 15-year-old niece who, when asked where they should go for dinner, responded: “I don’t know. Let me ask Chat.” The future is here and apparently it’s hungry for chatbot input

  15. Out of Sight, Out of Mind: How ADHD Object Permanence Leaks Money From Your Business

    Episode 325

    Show notes

‍Welcome back to ADHD-ish! For many ADHD entrepreneurs, "out of sight, out of mind" is a daily reality, whether that means active client projects, strategic goals, or vital admin tasks. When working memory struggles to keep priorities front and center, simple operational gaps quickly turn into overwhelming friction, trapping business owners in cycles of panic work and unnecessary stress.

In this episode, Diann Wingert explores how ADHD object permanence uniquely impacts business operations and daily execution. You’ll discover practical strategies to build visible business systems for ADHD entrepreneurs, improve ADHD follow through, and protect your mental bandwidth—helping you maintain consistent momentum without adding to your cognitive load in business.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Options vs Opportunities for the ADHD Entrepreneur

06:15 - Dopamine and ADHD Decision Making in Business

13:30 - Three Disguises that Overload Cognitive Load

20:45 - The Screen Door Filter for Entrepreneur Accountability

27:10 - Sustainable Systems for Business Owners with ADHD

Where Are You Leaking Money? ‍

I break it down into three layers:

    1. Past Clients: Amazing people who loved working with you, would buy again, and just need a nudge. But if they’re not in your calendar or inbox—they don’t exist to your brain. Your ADHD working memory isn't the problem; your system is.

    2. Leads in the ‘Dark Pipeline’: Warm prospects you were this close to converting…now forgotten until you randomly find that old email weeks later (and then feel the shame spiral). ‍This is ADHD Object Permanence in action—out of sight, completely out of mind.

    3. Your Own Offers: Courses, workshops, or services you actually could be selling—but forgot you even have. How many revenue streams are invisible because of ADHD Object Permanence?

What’s the Fix? Structural Visibility ‍

Don’t go buying a new planner or promising to “try harder.” That’s not a strategy—it’s just more stress.

Instead, build software (aka systems!) around your brain’s “hardware” constraints. This is how you turn ADHD strengths and struggles into actionable business strategy.

    Here’s How: ‍

    ● Use a CRM to remember leads for you—don't let your ADHD working memory be your only sales tool! This is structural support for ADHD Object Permanence.

    ● Block off time every week to review offers, check in on clients, and nudge those dark leads back into the light. Regular visibility beats relying on memory.

    ● Pre-schedule re-engagement emails for past clients + warm leads. Automation handles what ADHD Object Permanence makes invisible.

    Where to start: ‍

Don’t overhaul everything at once. Pick one area—past clients, dark leads, or forgotten offers—and add a single piece of visibility this week. ‍

It could be as simple as pulling your last 20 clients into a spreadsheet or writing a list of every product you currently offer.

The important part is making invisible opportunities visible again. This is how you leverage ADHD strengths and struggles for revenue growth.

  16. Eliminating Friction & Fatigue as an ADHD Solopreneur: A Client Success Story with Kathryn Bird

    Episode 324

    Show notes

Standard productivity frameworks and hustle culture often sell a rigid, neatly divided version of work-life balance that rarely works for high-achieving neurodivergent brains. When you try to force hyperfocus into conventional schedules, attempting to balance intense professional drive with personal well-being frequently leads to emotional exhaustion and severe ADHD burnout in entrepreneurs.

To break this cycle, Diann Wingert dismantles the myth of traditional balance to reveal an approach built for neurodivergent momentum. Learn how resetting your operational baseline, reducing cognitive load in business, and enforcing clear boundaries can optimize your ADHD business operations while protecting your energy for sustainable growth with ADHD.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - The Truth About ADHD Executive Function in Business

04:30 - Operational Bottlenecks Facing the ADHD Small Business Owner

09:15 - ADHD Decision Making Under Heavy Working Memory Load

15:40 - Streamlining ADHD Business Operations and Daily Systems

21:10 - Delegation for Entrepreneurs Managing Small Teams

26:35 - Overcoming Executive Dysfunction and ADHD Burnout Prevention

32:00 - Real-World Entrepreneur Accountability Strategies for Growth

36:45 - Sustainable Success Frameworks for the ADHD CEO

Here are my top 3 takeaways for anyone feeling stuck in their own “success”:

    • You don’t have a million problems—just a few powerful patterns. Identifying and naming them makes change possible.
    • Your worth is not tied to your to-do list. Planning for realistic work hours, protected downtime, and recovery is the key to sanity and sustainability.
    • You get to define your boundaries. Say no, let go of what drains you, and protect your energy—even when it means “hiding” some of your projects from yourself if deleting them feels too scary.

If you find yourself working nonstop, feeling guilty about taking a break, or recreating old corporate patterns in your “dream job,” remember: nothing on your list is more important than your well-being.

  17. What Procrastination, Resistance & Avoidance Are Trying to Tell You About Your Business

    Episode 323

    Show notes

If you are a business owner with ADHD trapped in procrastination, resistance, and avoidance, stop fighting your nervous system. Standard productivity tips fail because running a business with ADHD requires a different approach. In this episode of the ADHD-ish™ Podcast, Diann Wingert reframes procrastination as essential diagnostic data signaling operational bottlenecks.

Using the ADHD-ish™ Method, learn to diagnose friction instead of using brute force. Uncover five business signals inside your resistance, align your ADHD business strategy with your neurodivergence, and achieve sustainable business growth. Tune in to turn avoidance into your greatest strategic advantage as an ADHD entrepreneur.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Procrastination Is Business Intelligence

03:30 - Procrastination Is A Nervous System Signal

06:50 - Five Signals Behind Business Resistance

09:40 - Delegation, Decision, And Sunset Signals

13:05 - Revenue And Pricing Resistance

15:45 - Clarity And ADHD Business Strategy

    3 Key Takeaways:

    • Procrastination is a signal, not a personal failing. Your nervous system might be telling you something important about your business, like a task you’ve outgrown or a decision you haven’t fully made. This is how ADHD neurodiversity communicates through resistance.
    • Five “signals” behind resistance: Delegation (tasks you should hand off), Decision (incomplete choices), Sunset (offers you need to let go), Revenue (underpriced work), and Clarity (undefined scope/stakes). Most productivity tips miss these underlying issues entirely.
    • Don’t override, diagnose first. Before pushing through with more discipline, ask “What is this resistance telling me?”—then act on the real issue behind your avoidance. This diagnostic approach honors ADHD neurodiversity.

The Reframe: Procrastination is regulatory, NOT motivational.

Your nervous system is sending a protective signal, not exposing a character flaw or lack of discipline. For ADHD neurodiversity, this shows up when something is off below the surface—even if you don't consciously know what it is. This is why traditional productivity tips often fail.

Next time you find yourself stuck, don’t reach for another productivity hack. Instead, ask: “What is my resistance trying to tell me?”

Then act on the message, not just the task. Your business, and your brain, will thank you. This is what working with ADHD neurodiversity—rather than against it—actually looks like.

  18. No Diagnosis? No Problem! Embracing Neurodivergence Without Labels with Dr. Naketa Ren Thigpen

    Episode 322

    Show notes

If you suspect you have an ADHD-ish brain but lack a formal diagnosis, you might hesitate to step into neurodivergent leadership. Driven entrepreneurs often struggle with imposter syndrome without an official label. In this episode of the ADHD-ish™ Podcast, Diann Wingert and Dr. Naketa Ren Thigpen discuss embracing your neurodivergence without clinical validation.

Running a business with ADHD requires systems that honor your cognitive strengths. Discover how high-achieving founders use intuitive workarounds to thrive. You will learn how to leverage hyperfocus, handle the relational aspects of managing a team with ADHD, and build confidence as an ADHD small business owner.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Understanding Neurodivergence Without Diagnosis

05:55 - Recognizing Neurodivergent Traits In Yourself

11:40 - Neurodivergent Strengths In Entrepreneurship

17:35 - ADHD And The Power Of Hyperfocus

23:30 - Why Traditional Productivity Systems Fail

29:25 - Masking, Burnout, And Authenticity

35:40 - Building A Business Around Your Brain

42:15 - Embracing Neurodivergence As Your Advantage

    3 Key Takeaways:

    • Workplace Dynamics Are Deeply Human: So many organizational challenges stem from unresolved personal issues that show up at work. As Naketa says, bringing relational intelligence into organizations is the next frontier for trust, performance, and true inclusion.
    • Diagnosis Isn’t Required for Legitimacy: You don’t need a formal diagnosis to embrace your neurodivergent identity. For some, building effective "workarounds" is enough to thrive—labels can be empowering for some and unnecessary for others, as powerfully shared.
    • Hyperfocus Is a Super Tool—With Boundaries: Our ability to “hear the words and the music”—to focus deeply and be truly present—is a neurodivergent gift. Guarding these focus states with strong boundaries is key to making the most of them, both in business and personal growth.

  19. The Recurring Revenue Trap: The Hidden Cost of "Stable" Income for Business Owners with ADHD

    Episode 321

    Show notes

If you are a business owner with ADHD, mainstream advice says business growth requires recurring revenue. However, predictable retainers often cause burnout for neurodivergent entrepreneurs who thrive on novelty. In this episode of the ADHD-ish™ Podcast, Diann Wingert exposes the "recurring revenue trap" and the mismatch between traditional models and an ADHD brain.

Instead of forcing rigid operations, learn to align your offers with your brain wiring. Discover how project sprints and a value-based ADHD business strategy generate predictable income without routine boredom. Tune in to eliminate scope creep and build aligned success on your own terms.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - ADHD Business Strategy: The Recurring Revenue Trap

05:00 - Neurodiversity and the Science of Recurring Revenue

07:30 - Avoiding ADHD Entrepreneur Burnout in Client Retainers

11:45 - Value Based Pricing Strategy for ADHD Entrepreneurs

    18:20 - 6 Dopamine-Rich Business Strategy Alternatives

3 key takeaways for ADHD business owners:

    • Predictability vs. Novelty: Recurring revenue models (like retainers and memberships) are built for brains that thrive on sameness and routine—not the dopamine-hungry ADHD brain, which craves novelty, challenge, and change. Understanding neurodiversity means designing around these realities, not fighting them.
    • Structural Not Personal: Burning out on reliable income streams isn’t a failure—it’s a sign of structural mismatch. ADHD brains are wired to lose motivation with repetitive, predictable work. This is where value based pricing strategy becomes essential—charging for outcomes and transformation, not time.
    • Design for Your Brain: You DON’T have to quit recurring revenue altogether. Instead, intentionally build novelty into your recurring offers—limited run cohorts, rotating scopes, themed “seasons,” and planned refreshes let you keep both financial stability and creative energy. A flexible retainer model can honor both your needs and your neurodiversity.

6 Dopamine-rich alternatives to boring recurring revenue models:

    • Limited-run cohorts: Short sprints, not never-ending slogs
    • Retainers with rotating scope: New focus each quarter keeps it fresh
    • Memberships by season/theme: Built-in breaks & changing content
    • Quarterly intensives: Ditch the monthly grind; go deep, then rest
    • Planned sunsets: Don’t beat dead offers—set a clear end date!
    • Built-in refreshes: Schedule reinventions before boredom strikes

The offer you’re white-knuckling today is NOT the offer that’ll get you to the next level. Try, tweak, or sunset—but make it on YOUR terms.

    • Gamify for Engagement: Turning business challenges into quests (not just tasks!) makes even the most daunting to-do list approachable and—dare I say—fun. Paul swears by quest structures with tangible rewards to help ADHD brains stay motivated and follow through.

    • Identity Is Your Superpower: Creating a "character sheet" for yourself enables candid self-reflection, minus the ego panic. It’s a way to step outside traditional business coaching and unlock rapid personal growth—especially for those who hide or mask their real selves.

    • Redefine Success on Your Terms: Not every creative business needs to scale. chooses bespoke, deeply connected work over group programs and mass-produced results. The real magic? Custom approaches lead to legacy-building impact for both coach and client.

His unwavering dedication and inventive spirit have sustained his business for over 20 years, proving that passion and adaptability can defy the odds.

In addition to his custom design work, Paul runs Gamify Business, where he is the barkeep in a tavern for creatives.
