Share Your Fear: Lead with Honesty and Let Go of People-Pleasing – Anne Gillaspie
Summary
In this episode of the Amplify Speakers podcast, host Chris Sund interviews Anne Gillespie. She joins host Chris Sund to discuss how entrepreneurship, burnout, and personal transformation shaped her Share Your Fear movement. She explains how sharing difficult truths can help people feel seen, set boundaries, and lead with greater honesty at work and at home.
Takeaways
· Anne describes the identity uncertainty and loneliness that can come with entrepreneurship, and why founders need to build a supportive tribe and feedback network.
· She reflects on growing up in theater, the safety of defined roles, and the ceilings she encountered in corporate work and early career pay.
· After burnout, a miscarriage, and a move from Denver to Austin, Anne took three months off, reconnected with people, and began consulting under AG Brand and Marketing.
· Anne traces Share Your Fear to her 2020 personal crisis, when she told her husband she did not think she needed to be here anymore and was met with curiosity, safety, and unconditional love.
· She connects performing roles and people-pleasing with exhaustion, arguing that leaders can build human connection by leading from truth rather than fear.
· Anne says sharing fear starts with becoming a safe space for your own truth through boundaries, honoring yeses and noes, and letting go of people-pleasing.
· She sees parenthood and workplace leadership as connected, since the same person and emotional patterns show up in both settings.
· Anne describes her current transition toward keynote speaking and her goal of helping people feel seen and heard.
· It's so lonely. I talk about the loneliness in entrepreneurship often.
· You have to build your tribe, you have to build your colleagues, you have to find your own feedback mechanism because you don't have that.
· I can create my own opportunity and then meeting other people who believed it too.
· And that is what I want to help people on this planet do.
· Because when you're performing a life, it's exhausting. And performance is the number one thing that's gonna burn you out.
· The most basic human need that we all have, which is to be seen and heard for exactly who we are.
· Lead from truth and human-centered human connection instead of leading from fear.
· You have to become a safe space for your truth first so that you feel seen and heard by yourself.
· That practice comes from boundary setting. It comes from honoring your yeses and your no's.
· But in that liking, are we actually living the most honest version of ourselves?
