  1. Joe Erbentraut: Queering the Burbs and Carving Out Space

    Season 1, Episode 79

    Show notes

Just by virtue of being here, Joe Erbentraut knew that he'd be making an impact on Batavia. "When we moved out here, I was like, 'we're going to be queering the burbs," Joe says. "Which to me just means turning something on its head or making something maybe not what you thought it would be."

But there's a difference between making an impact and making a home. In this episode, I talk to the creator of local newsletter and zine, Queering the Burbs, about how he's managed to make Batavia home through storytelling, accountability, and holding on to his "delulu" until it becomes true.

PLUS: Joe shares the story of discovering that his home was actually a documented stop on the Underground Railroad - and a seasonally appropriate story of a ghostly encounter.

  2. Is Batavia Becoming a Ghost Town? (with Jamie Saam)

    Season 1, Episode 78

    Show notes

Just in time for spooky season, Batavia is facing one of the scariest prospects of all: the possibility of downtown businesses slowly dying.

These days, it's been hard to walk around downtown without being haunted by empty storefronts. There's no sugar-coating it: it's been a hard year for downtown businesses, and recent spate of closing announcements from Daddio's, Everdeens, Red Hive Market, and Beardsgaard, things are starting to feel pretty dire.

To get some perspective on this fear, we invited local business consultant with Start Something Studio and former MainStreet Batavia director Jamie Saam to join us. In a wide-ranging installment of our Neighborhood Watch segment, we discuss whether this news should truly trouble us or if this is simply part of the local life cycle of downtown. Then, we talk about the possible causes, and what local government, citizens, and business owners can do to keep things flourishing.

PLUS: Jamie sticks around for Batavia In Tune, a uniquely poetic Complaint of the Week, and then we leave you with a much-needed dose of hope with Good Energy.

  3. How Ward 2's Leah Leman Learned to Trust Her Gut

    Season 1, Episode 77

    Show notes

Most know Leah Leman as a co-owner of Limestone Coffee & Tea. But for six years, she's been balancing that with her role as alderperson for Ward 2, which Leah describes as Batavia's "introverted ward." And as a self-proclaimed introvert herself, Leah's a good fit.

So I wanted to know: how do you represented a part of Batavia that doesn't speak up very often? And what does her role as a downtown business owner bring to her time at city council?

On this episode of Area Code: Batavia, Leah Leman comes out of her shell long enough to talk to me about the inherent tensions involved in local politics, the inherent personality clashes in council meetings, and what it was like being the lone "No" vote on the data center.

PLUS: Richard and Alexa discuss the closing of Red Hive Market. Sad!

In this episode of Kids These Days, Superintendent Tom Kim introduces us to Shae (a 4th grader at J.B. Nelson Elementary) and Pam Foelske (director of Batavia Nursery School).

Shae and Pam share how much the town has grown, debate whether "old Batavia" or "new Batavia" is better, and explore why Batavia's sense of close-knit community hasn't changed.

Ultimately, this conversation shows us how education, extracurriculars, and district investments exist to foster the lifelong connections we find in Batavia.

  6. For Distraction-Free Batavia, Belonging Means Speaking Up

    Season 1, Episode 74

    Show notes

It was only two years ago when Megan McDermott moved to Batavia. But when she saw a need, she didn't hesitate to get involved. All it took was a conversation with a fellow parent to inspire her to co-found Distraction-Free Batavia, a parent advocacy group seeking to reduce screen time in schools.

Not only did McDermott and her friend and co-founder Megan Kouba's efforts succeed in creating change - they opened the door to a deeper sense of belonging, for both Megans and the other parents who were inspired to speak up themselves.

On this episode of Area Code: Batavia, a conversation with Megan McDermott about intentional technology use, the realities of advocating in a tight-knit town, and why true belonging means having the courage to "move the furniture" in your community.

PLUS: Richard shares a stunning statistic about who lives and works in Batavia, and Alexa processes her mouse trauma.

    • Read the BPS statement about technology shifts at BPS101
    • View the Distraction-Free Batavia Petition
    • View the presentation to the City Council that includes the statistics about who lives and works in Batavia.

  9. ReVisiting: Daddio's Diner

    Season 1, Episode 71

    Show notes

Recently, Daddio's Diner announced the sad news that they will be closing for good after Wednesday, September 23rd. "With rising costs of goods and an expiring lease, we had to make the very hard decision to close our doors at the end of next month."

Daddio's is a long-standing fixture in Batavia, and one of the key locations that defines Batavia and its' downtown. We'll have more to say about Daddio's closing next week, but for now, we thought it would be a good time to look back on my conversation with Scott Beltran, first published in May of last year.

In the meantime, make sure you stop by and have one more meal. And if you're able, show them support through this GoFundMe.

    -------

Some, who make grand claims of being self-made, might see their success as being a result of their own hard work. But Scott Beltran openly acknowledges the many people who have come alongside him to help make Daddio's a reality.

On this episode of Area Code: Batavia, a conversation with the owner of Daddio's Diner about those in his family and community who have helped make Daddio's the staple in Batavia it is today.

  12. Beyond Randall Road: Building Community on the West Side

    Season 1, Episode 68

    Show notes

Ward 7 is made up of the west side of Batavia, and contains a lot of the West Side staples we often think about: Engstrom Park, the Mooseheart Corn Fields, the High School, and yes, Randall Road. And then there's the large groups of brand new homes, a bunch of houses with little history, and a downtown that is not as walkable as you might like to most.

It's an area without a lot of focal points for gathering, and the ones that are there are largely commercial and impersonal. So how do those who live in Ward 7 create a sense of belonging where they are?

In this episode, we spoke to city council members Robin Barraza and Bob White about the proactive ways Ward 7 residents create opportunities for connection and community in their neighborhoods.

  13. The Fermilab Physicist Saving the World's Oceans in His Free Time

    Season 1, Episode 67

    Show notes

Arden Warner is an accelerator physicist and a self-described "simpleton." His uniquely straightforward way of looking at the world has made him uniquely equipped to solve some of the world's biggest problems.

When Arden saw coverage of a devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico back in 2010, he had an idea: what if we could remove oil from the ocean using magnets? It turns out, not only did his idea work, but it turned out to be a revolutionary approach to cleaning up oil spills.

On this episode, I talk to Arden about the life-long journey that lead him to being on the verge of solving one of earth's most significant problems, and how working and hanging out in Batavia keeps him feeling grounded and connected to community.

PLUS: Richard and Alexa talk smoke, bees, blood rivers, gambling, movies, and cocktails. Vices and plagues!!

    • For 630 Members: A discussion about local gossip and Arden Warner on the "FermiBubble" and his favorite things in Batavia.
    • Read the proposed gambling ordinance

  16. The Nine Lives of John Dryden

    Season 1, Episode 65

    Show notes

John Dryden has been many things. He's been a historian, a high school teacher, a hot dog vendor, a bartender, an actor, a comedy sketch writer, he ran a community garden, and yes, he's also been a bit of a rabble rouser.

These days, you might recognize him as the person who has led the campaign to "liberate North Batavia," or the founder of the Batavia Lyceum Association, which meets monthly at Sidecar Supper Club.

John is well-known among long-time Batavians, maybe even infamous. He wears his beliefs on his sleeve, and a lot of times, those beliefs, and his opinions about Batavia, have gotten him into trouble.

But I'm convinced that a healthy community requires rabble-rousers just like John Dryden.

  17. Making Room for Everyone in Ward 4

    Season 1, Episode 64

    Show notes

Today on the show, a conversation with the aldermen of Batavia's Ward 4, Tony Malay and Dustin Pieper.

Batavia is a place of belonging and acceptance. But this kind of culture doesn't come by accident. A town's culture is shaped by structures and systems. The culture we enjoy in Batavia is a direct result of the more formal acts of local government, staff, and public servants.

In this episode, I spoke with two aldermen whose Ward is particularly diverse, and particularly influential to the makeup of Batavia. Ward 4 includes a bunch of Batavian staples: Aldi corporate, River street, Batavia Apartments, and the historic black neighborhood at North River street.

That's a lot of history, economic diversity, and fast-moving change all in one location. So how do those in power protect and cultivate a sense of belonging in the midst of all of that? It turns out, it takes a combination of proactive policies, personal action, and relationship building.

    Season 1, Episode 63

    Show notes

Today on the show, a conversation with the founder of the notorious local Facebook Group, Things to Complain About In Batavia, Joe Runde.

My whole life, I've struggled with positivity. This was especially true about my relationship with Batavia. As great as Batavia is, I fundamentally believe that there are dark realities lurking underneath the surface of every community.

That's why I jumped at the chance to talk to Joe Runde, who started the facebook group on a whim, and ended up finding himself managing one of the most unruly and controversial social media platforms in our community.

  19. Batavia Boardwalk Shops: Bringing Humanity Back to Retail

    Season 1, Episode 62

    Show notes

For this episode, I was given the opportunity to talk to each of the boardwalk shop owners in their own habitat about who they are, what motivates them, and what they hope to accomplish.

At a time when people are doing all of their shopping on Amazon without coming in contact with a person, when people are sending emails and creating "art" using AI, when people are treating people as props, inconveniences, or opponents rather than neighbors, these shops are leaning into both the human and the humane.

The boardwalk shops are open now through the end of the year every weekend.

  20. How Batavia MainStreet is Crafting "Good Energy"

    Season 1, Episode 61

    Show notes

Next episode will be our third annual boardwalk shop episode, a conversation with every owner of each Batavia Boardwalk Shop.

In the lead up to that episode, I'm talking to the people responsible for making it all happen, Beth and Kristen from Batavia MainStreet. Not only does Main Street organize and prep the boardwalk shop owners. They help evaluate and curate the shops themselves.

That evaluating and curating is a great example of one of the things that intrigued me about MainStreet as an organization. Because Batavia MainStreet is responsible for so many things that make up the character of our town, they actually have a lot of power and influence over how things go down. When you check out the shops this year, you'll have Main Street to thank for the uniqueness and diversity on display.

These kinds of public-facing, community defining decisions come with a lot of weight, sometimes even baggage. So how do Beth and Kristen lead in these initiatives without feeling overwhelmed, not just by the work but by public scrutiny?
