Artsy Types

Arts, Visual Arts

Creativity conversations for artists, or just artsy types. Joy and Teresa are two life-long friends who have been having a 40-year conversation about culture and creativity, and they've expanded the conversation to include you. They both have day jobs, but what they really love is creating and talking about art, writing, music, metalsmithing, painting--figuring out how to create something from nothing.

  1. Falling Leaves, Moody Palettes: How Do Artists Embrace Autumn?

    Show notes

Shorter days and falling leaves have Joy and Teresa thinking back to grade school fall art projects. They recall laminating fallen leaves between melted wax paper and making homemade Halloween costumes. They also explore the ways the changing seasons impact their art today and what each hope to accomplish artistically before year-end. The episode is bookended at the start with an update on Joy’s attempt at travel journaling and at the end with memories of 80s horror movie franchises—and the 1979 horror mini-series that Teresa still revisits.

Teresa has been getting into a flow at her workbench and is allowing a new collection to emerge on its own. They’ve both been busy writing one-line stories to read out loud. The conversation begins by featuring listener comments to the question, “Why I Create,” and ends by swapping memories of 1980s scents—both good and bad.

  4. Where Do Ideas Come From?

    Show notes

Finished works of art are born from small ideas. Tiny seeds—sometimes just a few scattered thoughts—somehow nestle into our minds, find ways to grow and finally make their way to a pencil, a paintbrush, piano keys, a mound of clay or a piece of enamel. Joy and Teresa talk about using an annoying crow, a haunting photograph, and an inflatable kayak as launchpads to creativity. In Rabbit Holes and Recommendations, Joy finally discovers the mastery of author Claire Keegan and Teresa explores the unique music of British composer Matthew Wilcock. Their childhood gym class staple, Dodgeball, is in the headlines, and the episode wraps up by highlighting a new Instagram follower, artist and studio jeweler aether_.studio.

From alt-rock band Pavement playing loudly through headphones, to curated ambient music designed to create an “emotional weather system” in the studio, their two recipes start at the same places then quickly veer off. Joy comes armed with a book anti-recommendation, and Teresa discovers trench art in Rabbit Holes and Recommendations, all before doing a deep dive on a tv show of their youth, Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp. A bed & breakfast from the UK gets shouted out as a new ArtsyTypesPod Instagram follower.

  6. When Is it Ok to Be a Creative Copycat?

    Show notes

Artists have tried to replicate the works of the masters for centuries. Copying to learn is nothing new. But what happens when the piece of jewelry you dreamed up while looking at the stars, sketched into existence in an old notebook and crafted after hours at your workbench—what happens when you see that identical piece of jewelry for sale on someone else’s website? Joy and Teresa discuss the importance of pulling inspiration from other artists while not crossing the plagiarism line. When is it ok to be a creative copycat? In Rabbit holes and Recommendations, Teresa gets caught up in the amazing mind of mixed media artist Chris Roberts Antieau, and Joy has Olivia Rodrigo’s newest album on heavy rotation, while both Gen X’ers are troubled by a hit song from their youth, “Escape (The Pina Colada Song).” The episode ends with comments on past topics from two followers of the ArtsyTypesPod Instagram account.

  7. A-Ha Moments: Three Creativity Revelations

    Show notes

The creativity conversations are generating lots of ideas, and they’ve led Joy and Teresa to pose a question to one another: what have your a-ha moments been? Are there revelations that have found their way into your artistic process? Whether it’s a reminder to get out of the studio and live life, or a directive to call upon muses to help with creativity, the a-ha moments are revealed. The episode’s recommendations include a Dutch musician forging a unique musical path, as well as a book that breaks down the craft of Russian short stories. The now-obsolete phone booth is the backdrop for the 1980s segment, and each creator shares the odd categories Spotify has put them in. The episode ends with a back-and-forth on the beauty of flourishes, and mentions the Instagram account and website theflourishclub.

  12. Honesty in Art: Let's Get Personal

    Show notes

Honesty is the foundation of good art, but is there such a thing as being too honest? Spurred on by a beautifully forthright statement that Teresa recently made on Instagram, this episode’s conversation explores where the line is between artistic confessionalism and trauma dumping. As the episode moves along, there’s a segment on “The Last Thing That Inspired Me” that brings out favorites in television and music, which naturally leads into. . .the Bermuda Triangle, Ouija Boards and quicksand, and finishes with a shout out to a special artist that, one might say, gave birth to Artsy Types.

    Show notes

Artists are creatures of habit, and those habits either help creativity flourish or get in its way. Teresa is sharing the habits that have helped build her metalsmith practice, and Joy is asking for ideas to combat the dreaded bad habit of social media distraction. The episode begins with an anecdote about how the art of Gerald Scarfe made an early impact and ends with a back-and-forth about the merits of high school class rings. Joy has discovered a podcast that focuses on grief, and Teresa has entered the rabbit hole of artist John William Waterhouse.
