In this episode of Become Your Own Boss, entrepreneur Monica Allen explores the real meaning of business ownership and entrepreneurship. If someone asked what your business does right now, could you explain it clearly and confidently in 60 seconds or less?

This week, Monica is bringing back an episode with a message every business owner needs to revisit: people cannot buy from you or recommend you if they don’t understand what you do.

It sounds simple, but entrepreneurs are often so close to their businesses that explaining them clearly can be harder than expected. 8. 320 - How to Stop Working IN Your Business and Start Working ON Your Business

    Episode 320

    Show notes

When was the last time you spent an entire workday actually leading your business instead of simply running it?

Small business owners often start by doing everything themselves. That hustle can build a business from nothing, but as the company grows, staying involved in every task can keep the owner from doing the work only a CEO can do.

In this episode of Become Your Own Boss, Monica explores the difference between leading and managing a business and why entrepreneurs can easily find themselves stuck in the weeds. Drawing from her own experience and leadership concepts from her doctoral studies, Monica shares practical ways business owners can protect their CEO seat, even without a large team or Fortune 500 resources.

She also challenges listeners to examine where their time is really going and make one meaningful change that creates more room to lead.

Episode Quote: The distance between number one and number two is always a constant. If you want to improve the organization, you have to improve yourself and the organization gets pulled up with you. That is a big lesson. ~Indra Nooyi

  17. 311 - How to Stand Out From Your Competition: Stop Hiding What Makes Your Business Different

    Episode 311

    Show notes

Have you accidentally hidden the very thing that makes customers choose your business? Learning how to stand out from your competition doesn't always mean creating something new. Your biggest competitive advantage may already exist, but your customers can't see it.

A family trip to a famous amusement park sparks an unexpected marketing lesson every entrepreneur needs to hear. Monica shares how discovering an award-winning roller coaster that was barely highlighted on a company's website led her to examine a common business mistake: burying the feature that makes a brand truly stand out. Instead of chasing new ideas, business owners may already have their biggest competitive advantage. They just aren't putting it where customers can see it. This episode challenges entrepreneurs to view their marketing through fresh eyes and identify the one thing that creates lasting impressions before customers compare them on price.

Episode Quote: Marketing is all about creating a sense of desire. ~David Ogilvy
