Episode 53 - Lessons from the Hive - Beehaving is not Beekeeping
Season 3, Episode 53
Show notes
What's the difference between having bees and actually keeping bees?
In this first installment of Lessons from the Hive, a new Beekeeping Buddies series, Luke shares one of the hardest lessons he's learned as a beekeeper: losing all ten of his colonies in a single winter.
After hearing an experienced and respected beekeeper explain why he chose not to treat for Varroa mites, Luke decided to follow a similar approach. But when spring arrived, every colony was dead. What initially seemed like a failure to treat turned out to be a much bigger lesson about the importance of active hive management.
Luke reflects on how that experience changed his approach to beekeeping, from monitoring mite levels and keeping inspection records to developing treatment plans and questioning long-held assumptions. He also discusses how a presentation by Dr. Cameron Jack led him to investigate the research behind oxalic acid vaporization and discover problems with his own treatment practices.
Years later, with improved management and more consistent treatment practices, Luke achieved approximately 80% overwintering survival across the colonies he manages.
The lesson? Beekeeping isn't about blindly following advice, whether it comes from a book or an experienced beekeeper. It's about observing your colonies, understanding the science, making informed decisions, and continuing to learn.
Join Luke for this personal look at the mistakes, research, and experiences that helped shape him into the beekeeper he is today.
Lessons from the Hive is a Beekeeping Buddies series exploring the practical lessons learned through years of working with honey bees.

In the News: New research on Varroa mites is challenging what we thought we knew about these troublesome parasites. We discuss the latest discoveries and what they could mean for beekeeping and future mite management.
Honeybee Hotline: We're talking mite treatments, feeding strategies, and the decisions beekeepers face when preparing their colonies for winter.
Droning On: As always, we wrap things up with a little beekeeping conversation, observations from the yard, and whatever else happens to be buzzing around in our heads.
Whether you're managing your first colony or your hundredth, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and join us for another episode of Beekeeping Buddies!

Episode 51 - Beginning Winter Preparation, Another Cutout, Honeybee Hotline and more!
Season 3, Episode 51
Show notes
Episode 51 of Beekeeping Buddies takes us from new honey bee research to the very practical work of preparing colonies for winter.
We dig into a recent study out of Korea and discuss what the findings could mean for beekeepers. We also look at fascinating research suggesting that queens may have a unique ability to shed or eliminate pesticide residues—and what that might tell us about queen biology, colony health, and pesticide exposure.
Then we head back into the bee yard. With fall approaching, Luke and Steve talk through what they're doing now to get colonies ready for winter: evaluating colony strength, managing mites, checking food stores, making decisions about weaker colonies, and setting hives up for the months ahead.
In Episode 51:
• New honey bee research from Korea
• Can queens shed pesticide residues?
• What the research could mean in the real world
• Late-summer colony assessments
• Mite control heading into fall
• Food stores and winter preparation
• What Luke and Steve are doing in their own bee yardsResearch, practical beekeeping, and probably a little droning on along the way.

Episode 48 - Growing into Sideliner Beekeeping, Increasing your Network, and Venom Cancer Research
Season 3, Episode 48
Show notes
When does a hobby become a business? In this episode, Steve and Luke discuss the transition from hobbyist beekeeper to sideliner, including the challenges, opportunities, and mindset shifts that come with managing more colonies and serving customers. They share practical thoughts on growth, avoiding common mistakes, and determining whether expansion is right for your operation.
The conversation also explores the importance of building a strong beekeeping network. From local clubs and mentors to industry contacts and research partners, the relationships you develop can open doors, solve problems, and create opportunities that would be difficult to achieve alone.
Finally, the hosts review emerging research investigating compounds found in honey bee venom and their potential role in cancer treatment. While much of the work remains in the research stage, the discussion highlights some of the promising findings and what they may mean for the future of medicine.
Whether you're managing your first hive or considering your next fifty, this episode offers insights on growth, community, and the surprising ways honey bees continue to impact our world.

Episode 43 - Is Spring Here? Accident in the Yard! Luke Goes to the Midwest Honeybee Expo!
Season 3, Episode 43
Show notes
We're enjoying a stretch of beautiful weather here in the Peoria area, and that can only mean one thing for beekeepers: false spring temptation.
This week, Steve and Luke talk through what you should (and shouldn't) be doing during these warm February days. When is it smart to crack a lid? When should you leave well enough alone? And how do you avoid setting your colonies back before maples even think about blooming?
Luke also shares a hard lesson from the yard an accident that resulted in a grass fire. What happened, what caused it, and what you can do to avoid the same mistake around your apiary.
Finally, Luke breaks down some of the standout speakers and takeaways from the Midwest Honeybee Expo in Wisconsin. From practical management tips to bigger industry conversations, there was plenty worth bringing back home to Illinois.
If you're staring at your hives in 50-degree weather wondering whether to "just take a quick peek," this episode is for you.

Season 2, Episode 40
Show notes
I know, two episodes in two weeks? Well, episode 40 is here, and this one is big.
We sat down with Dr. Jeff Pettis, former President of Apimondia and one of the world's leading honey bee researchers, for an in-depth conversation about the Tropilaelaps mite—the parasitic threat looming over global beekeeping.
In this episode:
• What Tropilaelaps mites are and how they differ from Varroa • Why they spread so rapidly and how countries currently battling them (like South Korea) are coping • What would happen if Tropilaelaps arrived in the United States—the realistic short- and long-term impacts • Early detection, containment strategies, and the U.S. preparedness gap • What beekeepers can do right now to stay informed and ready
This is one of our most important interviews to date, offering clear-eyed insight from a scientist who has studied global bee health for decades.
Tune in, learn what's coming, and help shape the conversation about protecting honey bees in North America.
