  1. AI in the Bee Yard with Joe Meyer

    Episode 409

    Show notes

Artificial intelligence is moving quickly into everyday life—but what does that actually mean for beekeepers? In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome Minnesota beekeeper and queen rearer Joe Meyer for a practical discussion about AI, recordkeeping, computer vision, and the tools that may soon become part of the bee yard.

Joe begins with his own beekeeping background, including queen rearing and a shared-worker mating system he has been experimenting with. Then the conversation turns to AI and one of the most persistent problems in beekeeping: keeping useful colony records while wearing gloves, a veil, and working quickly through an apiary.

Joe explains why voice-first tools may offer a better solution and how AI models can use beekeeping context to make transcription more accurate. He also distinguishes between conversational AI and specialized tools built for tasks such as counting Varroa mites or organizing inspection data.

The discussion includes the limitations of today's chatbots, Jeff's unsuccessful experiment asking AI to count mites from photographs, and Joe's own work with computer vision.

Most importantly, Joe argues that AI should assist rather than replace the beekeeper. The goal isn't a robot making decisions—it's better tools for memory, organization, research, and learning while keeping human judgment firmly in the process.

  2. 2027 North American Honey Bee Expo with Kamon Reynolds

    Episode 408

    Show notes

The North American Honey Bee Expo returns January 7–9, 2027, and Kamon Reynolds joins Jeff and Becky with a preview of what beekeepers can expect in Louisville. This year's Expo expands to three full days of education, with more than 70 hours of presentations, a larger trade show, new vendors, workshops, the North American Honey Bar, microscopy sessions, and plenty of opportunities to meet the people developing the equipment, technology, and ideas shaping modern beekeeping.

Kamon shares some of the speakers and topics planned for 2027, from queen rearing and commercial beekeeping to top-bar hives, honey shows, overwintering, microscopy, mite resistance, and ways smaller operations can increase their income.

A major addition this year is Beekeeping Foundations, a seven-session beginner program being developed by Jeff and Becky. The course will combine classroom instruction with the unique hands-on opportunities available throughout the Expo trade floor, giving new beekeepers a chance to see and handle the equipment and concepts they're learning about.

Kamon also joins Jeff and Becky for a Hive IQ listener question about late-season queens, discussing mating challenges, fall colony strength, and why maintaining spare nucs can provide valuable insurance against queen failure.

Whether you're brand new to beekeeping or have decades of experience, Kamon's goal remains the same: create an event that educates, connects, and inspires beekeepers.

  3. Bee Science with Dewey Caron: Honey Bee Domestication Bonus

    Show notes

Have humans truly domesticated the honey bee? In this Bee Science Short, Dr. Dewey Caron looks at that question through the history of honey bee breeding and the growing interest in locally adapted stock.

Dewey explains that honey bees don't fit neatly into the same domestication category as cattle, chickens, or dogs. Managed colonies can swarm and survive as feral populations, yet generations of beekeepers have clearly selected for traits such as gentleness, hygienic behavior, productivity, and appearance.

He then traces changes in bee breeding from imported Italian bees and early queen-rearing systems to hybrid lines and today's commercial queen industry.

A major focus is genetic diversity and genotype-environment interaction: the idea that bee stock adapted to one environment may perform differently somewhere else. Dewey reviews COLOSS research in Europe in which locally adapted colonies showed better survival, strength, and productivity than non-local stock under the conditions tested. BSD-11 - Domestication

He closes with examples of U.S. efforts to maintain or develop locally adapted, mite-resistant, and survivor stock — and leaves beekeepers with an ongoing question: should we continue moving selected genetics widely, or place greater emphasis on bees adapted to local conditions?

  4. Live from the Pacific Northwest Beekeeping Conference: Varroa, Invasives, and Winter Prep (407)

    Episode 407

    Show notes

Recorded live at the Pacific Northwest Beekeeping Conference in Wenatchee, Washington, this episode brings together five experienced voices for a fast-moving discussion of some of the biggest issues facing beekeepers today. Jeff Ott moderates a panel featuring Adam Pachl, Dr. David Peck, Dr. Brandon Hopkins, Kamon Reynolds, and Fred Dunn. The conversation begins with a familiar question: after nearly 40 years of Varroa in the United States, are we actually making progress?

The panel looks at resistant stock, improved management strategies, RNAi technology, and the reality that Varroa will likely remain part of beekeeping for years to come.

The discussion then turns to invasive pests and the importance of vigilance in port states such as Washington, including Tropilaelaps and invasive hornets. Panelists emphasize that local clubs and individual beekeepers can play an important role in early detection and monitoring.

Audience questions bring practical issues to the forefront: creating brood breaks, queen caging, pheromones, warm winters, mite-treatment choices, amitraz resistance, oxalic acid, and the limitations of current Varroa monitoring methods.

The panel closes with one simple challenge: go home, look carefully at your colonies, prepare them for winter, and keep learning from the bees.

  5. The Honey Bee and Climate Change with Dr. Gloria DeGrandi-Hoffman

    Episode 406

    Show notes

How is a changing climate reshaping the way honey bee colonies grow, forage, and survive winter? Dr. Gloria DeGrandi-Hoffman returns to Beekeeping Today Podcast to discuss her new book, The Honey Bee and Climate Change, and what nearly four decades of honey bee research have taught her about the connections among climate, nutrition, Varroa, and colony survival.

Gloria explains how unusually warm fall and winter weather can keep bees flying later in the year, changing colony age structure while extending opportunities for Varroa mites to move among colonies. At the same time, heat and drought can alter flowering periods and reduce both the quantity and nutritional quality of pollen and nectar available to bees.

The conversation explores the annual nutritional cycle of the colony, the differences between summer and winter bees, and why fall pollen can be so important for successful overwintering. Gloria also discusses research into cold-storage overwintering as one possible response to increasingly unpredictable fall conditions.

Finally, Jeff, Becky, and Gloria look at what beekeepers can do now: improve access to diverse forage, monitor and control Varroa carefully, consider mite-resistant stock, and recognize that yesterday's reliable management calendar may not always fit tomorrow's conditions.

  7. American Honey, Russian Bees, and the Work of the AHPA with Steven Coy

    Episode 405

    Show notes

Steven Coy returns to Beekeeping Today for a wide-ranging conversation about the challenges facing American beekeepers—and the role genetics may play in building more resilient colonies.

Steven is president of the American Honey Producers Association and a longtime commercial beekeeper and Russian honey bee breeder. He begins by explaining how the AHPA represents commercial beekeepers through advocacy, Farm Bill work, anti-dumping efforts, and programs such as ELAP. He also discusses the proposed Honey Integrity Act and why the industry wants a federal standard of identity for honey.

The conversation also examines declining U.S. honey production, imported honey, consumer confidence, and efforts to encourage consumers to buy American honey and support domestic beekeepers and pollination agriculture.

In the second half, Steven takes Jeff and Becky inside his Mississippi operation and nearly three decades of experience with Russian honey bees. He discusses Varroa resistance, wintering, brood production, honey production, defensive behavior, and why resistant stock still requires thoughtful mite management.

Steven also makes the case for evaluating genetics at the apiary level, explaining why mite drift and surrounding colonies can mask the advantages of resistant stock.

  8. Norroa: A New RNAi Approach to Varroa Control Bonus

    Show notes

Norroa brings a very different approach to Varroa management. In this installment of the Beekeeping Today Podcast Varroa Treatment Series, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome Dr. David Peck of Betterbee to explain how this new treatment works and, just as importantly, when it may—or may not—fit into a beekeeper's management plan.

Unlike treatments designed to quickly kill mites, Norroa uses RNA interference, or RNAi, to disrupt reproduction in female Varroa mites. The active ingredient, vadescana, is delivered in sugar syrup pouches that bees consume and incorporate into brood food, where reproductive mites can be exposed.

That means timing matters. Norroa requires actively reared open brood and is intended to hold mite populations down over time rather than rescue a colony already experiencing dangerously high mite and virus pressure.

David also explains pouch placement, treatment timing, monitoring challenges, cost considerations, and why local nectar flows, dearth periods, colony development, and mite pressure all matter when deciding whether Norroa belongs in your Varroa management program.

  9. Nutrition, Microbiomes, and Colony Health with the Carl Hayden Lab Team

    Episode 404

    Show notes

What does honey bee health look like when researchers examine it from the inside out? In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome three scientists from the USDA-ARS Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson, Arizona: Dr. Vanessa Corby-Harris, Dr. Kirk Anderson, and Dr. Mark Carroll. Their work spans insect physiology, nutrition, microbiomes, chemical ecology, Varroa, and the complicated ways multiple stressors influence colony health.

Vanessa explains why nutrition is one of the areas where beekeepers can directly influence colony health and how researchers use biomarkers—including the honey bee fat body—to connect individual bee physiology with brood production and colony performance.

Kirk describes research comparing colonies placed in diverse Conservation Reserve Program forage with colonies working canola and sunflower landscapes, then discusses a more recent case involving Varroa, amitraz resistance, viruses, nutrition, and agricultural exposure.

Mark explores another layer: how young workers interpret colony conditions and how pheromones such as β-ocimene may influence brood rearing during nutritional stress.

Together, the conversation shows why understanding colony health increasingly means looking beyond any single stressor—and why nutrition, physiology, microbes, pesticides, pathogens, and mites often need to be considered together.

Also in this episode, Jeff and Becky answer a Hive IQ listener question about preparing plastic foundation for bees.

  10. AI in the Bee Yard: Getting Started with AI for Beekeepers Bonus

    Show notes

Artificial intelligence is rapidly finding its way into everyday tools—but where does it fit in the bee yard? In this Beekeeping Today Podcast Short, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman begin exploring how beekeepers can put AI to practical use without treating it as an unquestioned authority.

Jeff and Becky discuss using AI to organize colony inspection notes, create spreadsheets for mite monitoring, analyze data, help locate research and extension resources, and assist with projects such as grant applications. They also address the other side of the equation: AI can sound convincing while providing inaccurate information, invent sources, misinterpret images, or claim capabilities it does not actually have.

Jeff shares his own experiment asking AI to identify and count Varroa mites from photographs of IPM boards—with decidedly mixed results.

Their takeaway is straightforward: use AI as an assistant, much like a student or intern. Ask questions, challenge the answers, request sources, and verify important information yourself.

And this is only the beginning.

  11. The U.S. Beekeeping Survey: Colony Losses, Varroa, and Better Data

    Episode 403

    Show notes

What can nearly two decades of beekeeper-reported data tell us about colony health—and what can it not tell us? In this episode, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome Dr. Geoff Williams, Dr. Nathalie Steinhauer, and Dr. Agostina Giacobino to discuss the 2026 U.S. Beekeeping Survey and its continuity after the closure of the Bee Informed Partnership.

The team explains why annual colony-loss rates function much like a mortality or turnover measure rather than a direct count of the nation's living colonies. Preliminary 2025–26 results suggest losses improved from the exceptionally difficult previous two years, yet the national annual estimate remained near 40 percent. One in three responding commercial beekeepers reported losing more than half their colonies—sobering numbers even in a comparatively better year.

Nathalie and Agostina describe how consistent questions make long-term comparisons possible, while new dashboards help beekeepers, researchers, inspectors, and extension professionals explore management trends. The conversation highlights increased adoption of Varroa monitoring and treatment, growing commercial use of oxalic acid amid concerns about amitraz resistance, and a central lesson: successful Varroa control is a season-long system of prevention, monitoring, timing, and multiple tools—not a search for one magic product.

The guests also walk through the survey calendar, state participation, rapid preliminary reporting, and why both summer and winter losses matter. More than 2,300 respondents represented roughly 10 to 13 percent of U.S. colonies in the latest survey, but stronger state-level participation remains an important goal.

Before the interview, Becky answers a HiveIQ listener question about how quickly pulled honey supers should be extracted.

  12. Bee Science with Dewey Caron: Honey Bees and Smoke Bonus

    Show notes

Why do we smoke honey bees—and how much smoke do they really need? In this installment of his Bee Science mini-series on Beekeeping Today, Dr. Dewey Caron sends an audio postcard from Portland, Oregon, during a wildfire smoke advisory. He uses the smoky skies as a starting point for a discussion of the beekeeper's smoker, the behavior of honey bees, and the challenges wildfire brings to the bee yard.

Dewey's central message about smoker use is simple: use it sparingly. He walks through lighting a smoker, choosing fuel that produces cool, white smoke, keeping it working throughout an inspection, and directing smoke where it helps move bees away from fingers and hive equipment. He also describes ways to reduce unnecessary disturbance as frames are removed and the colony is closed.

The conversation then turns to what smoke actually does. Dewey explains why he describes smoke as changing bee behavior rather than simply calming bees. He discusses alarm odor, bees retreating from smoke, and honey-stomach filling, while identifying the proposed wildfire escape response as a theory. Liquid smoke, water, sugar water, and inspections without a smoker each get a look, along with their limitations.

Wildfire smoke raises a different set of questions. Dewey reflects on Oregon's 2020 fires, threats to apiaries, and the difficulties of caring for surviving colonies. He discusses native bee nesting habitat, changes in post-fire forage, and how smoky skies can interfere with the polarized-light patterns honey bees use to navigate. He also considers research on ash exposure and emphasizes how much remains unknown about its effects on flower visitors.

To close, Dewey offers ten points covering smoker safety, inspection decisions, evacuation preparedness, defensible space, supplemental feeding, clean water, documentation, and habitat recovery. Throughout, the emphasis is on thoughtful smoker use and avoiding additional stress on colonies during smoke events.

  13. From Spacecraft to Beehives: Dan Seitz and ApisNode

    Episode 402

    Show notes

What happens when a spacecraft engineer becomes fascinated with honey bees? In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome Dan Seitz, an engineer from Los Alamos, New Mexico, whose career designing instruments for spacecraft eventually led him to tackle a very different remote-sensing challenge: understanding what is happening inside a honey bee colony.

Dan began experimenting with commercially available temperature sensors but quickly wanted more precise and frequent measurements. That curiosity evolved into ApisNode, a compact sensor system designed to sit between frames and continuously measure multiple aspects of the colony environment—including temperature, humidity, sound, vibration, and volatile compounds. The system can collect dozens of individual data metrics and transmit them from the apiary for analysis.

But collecting data is only part of Dan's idea. He is also using artificial intelligence trained with honey bee research literature to look for patterns and correlations in colony behavior. Importantly, the beekeeper remains part of the system: voice-recorded inspections provide observations that can be combined with sensor data to give the AI essential real-world context.

Dan shares a fascinating example from his own apiary, where sensors detected changes in brood temperature and colony vibration during smoke from a wildfire roughly ten miles away.

The conversation then turns to Dan's Open Apiary Project, an effort to build an anonymized, openly available database of consistently collected honey bee colony data. Could thousands of instrumented colonies eventually reveal patterns that individual inspections—and individual beekeepers—cannot see?

Also in this episode, Becky answers a HiveIQ listener question about allowing bees to build foundationless comb in Langstroth frames.

  14. Varroa Treatment: Api-Bioxal RTU Bonus

    Show notes

The Varroa Treatment Series continues with another oxalic acid option: Api-Bioxal RTU, a ready-to-use liquid formulation designed for dribble application.

Dr. David Peck of Betterbee joins Jeff and Becky to explain what makes RTU different from the traditional oxalic acid and sugar-syrup dribble beekeepers may already know. Instead of weighing, measuring, and mixing oxalic acid, RTU arrives premixed and ready for application at 5 milliliters per occupied seam of bees.

David discusses why the glycerin-based formulation may remain active in the hive longer than a sugar-based dribble and how brood status affects its performance. In a broodless colony, RTU can serve as a powerful Varroa knockdown treatment. When capped brood is present, repeated applications can instead help bring mite populations down and hold them under control.

The conversation covers the label's repeat-treatment schedule, application with honey supers present, shelf life and storage, temperature considerations, safety advantages compared with oxalic acid vaporization, and an important difference from homemade dribbles: RTU does not have the same 50-milliliter-per-colony maximum.

As David emphasizes, Api-Bioxal RTU is another tool—not a universal solution—for building an effective Varroa management program.

  15. A Conversation with Beekeepers Quarterly

    Episode 401

    Show notes

Beekeeping challenges rarely stop at national borders. This week, Jeff and Becky cross the Atlantic for a conversation with Dr. Andrea Quigley and Norman Carreck, co-editors of the UK-based Beekeepers Quarterly.

Norman, a longtime beekeeper and bee scientist, introduces listeners to the UK's extensive beekeeping education system and his work conserving the native dark European honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera. The conversation explores what locally adapted honey bees can teach beekeepers about genetics, winter survival, colony size, temperament, and management.

Andrea then takes us inside Beekeepers Quarterly, an independent, internationally focused magazine published by Northern Bee Books. She explains how the quarterly combines practical beekeeping, science, conservation, and perspectives from contributors around the world.

The discussion also turns to two emerging threats with international implications: Tropilaelaps mites and the yellow-legged hornet. Norman and Andrea explain why early detection, understanding pest biology, and cooperation among researchers, government agencies, beekeepers, and the public matter—and what North American beekeepers might learn from the European experience.

It's a wide-ranging conversation offering a decidedly international perspective on honey bees, beekeeping, research, and the challenges ahead.

  16. Inside Premier Bee Products: From Bee Yard Ideas to Manufacturing Bonus

    Show notes

What does it look like when beekeeping equipment moves from an idea in the bee yard to full-scale manufacturing?

In this Beekeeping Today Podcast Short, Jeff Ott takes listeners onto the production floor at Premier Bee Products in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Premier founder Jeff Johnson explains how the company approached woodenware manufacturing with a clean slate, borrowing technology and techniques from industries such as cabinetmaking to produce frames and hive bodies with speed, precision, and consistency.

The conversation also traces Premier's beginnings in plastic foundation and Johnson's philosophy of allowing honey bees—not manufacturing convenience—to help determine product design. That same approach eventually led Premier to explore research on the honey bee propolis envelope and develop its Propolis Hive.

Jeff and Jeff also discuss Premier's use of half-blind dovetail joints in hive bodies and the story behind the Legacy Lid, developed by Missouri beekeeper and woodworker Bill George.

It's a field report about much more than manufacturing. It's a look at what can happen when beekeepers, researchers, engineers, and manufacturers approach familiar problems from a different direction.

  17. Winning at Honey with Stephanie: Preparing Pollen for Competition Bonus

    Show notes

This month on Winning at Honey with Stephanie, Stephanie Slater turns her attention to a honey show category that doesn't appear at every competition: pollen. Preparing pollen for competition requires more than simply collecting it from a pollen trap. Stephanie walks through what judges look for, including cleanliness, proper moisture, aroma and flavor, consistent fill levels, and a colorful variety of pollen. She also shares lessons from her own first pollen entry—and the judge's comment card that showed her where she could improve.

You'll learn how Stephanie collects and freezes pollen, uses a fan to separate lighter debris, hand-cleans small batches with tweezers, and prepares jars for judging. She also explains why you should bring extra pollen to the show to correct settling and fill levels before submitting your entry.

Stephanie also discusses balancing pollen collection with the nutritional needs of the colony, including her practice of activating traps for only 24 hours before giving the bees several days of unrestricted pollen collection.

Finally, this month's Honey Show Spotlight looks at upcoming competitions in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and the 2026 Missouri State Beekeepers Association Fall Conference, where Stephanie will be helping with the honey show.

Whether you're preparing your first pollen entry or looking for another category to add to your show bench, it's time to start cleaning those pollen pellets!

  18. 400 Episodes of Beekeeping Today: Looking Back and Looking Ahead

    Episode 400

    Show notes

Four hundred episodes. What started with a conversation between Jeff Ott and the late Kim Flottum in Medina, Ohio, has grown into hundreds of conversations about honey bees, beekeeping, research, management, and the people who make up the beekeeping community.

For this special 400th episode, Jeff and Becky Masterman are joined around the virtual Beekeeping Today table by three familiar voices: Dr. Jim Tew, Dr. Dewey Caron, and Stephanie Slater. Together, they look back at how the podcast began, what they've learned from years of talking with beekeepers, and why those conversations continue to matter.

The discussion also tackles a Hive IQ listener question from a new beekeeper whose first nucleus colony produced more than ten gallons of honey—and who is already thinking about expanding. The group considers how quickly a new beekeeper should grow, the financial and management realities of expansion, and Becky's suggestion that growing by dividing your own successful colonies can provide a natural governor on expansion while skills develop.

From there, the conversation ranges from understanding local nectar flows and finding mentors to honey shows, marketing local honey, farmer's markets, and even matching different honeys with cocktails.

Most importantly, Episode 400 celebrates the listeners, guests, contributors, and sponsors who have helped Beekeeping Today Podcast reach this milestone.

Thank you for coming along for the first 400. On to 500!

  19. Protecting the Future of Beekeeping: A Tri-States Panel

    Episode 399

    Show notes

What will a healthy beekeeping industry look like five or ten years from now—and what needs to change to get us there? Recorded live at the Tri-States and Minnesota Beekeepers meeting in Fargo, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman moderate a wide-ranging conversation with Randy Oliver of Scientific Beekeeping, Dr. Izzy Hill of Project Apis m., and Dr. Brandon Hopkins of Washington State University about protecting the future of beekeeping.

The discussion begins with the economics. Commercial beekeeping has long depended on two major sources of income: honey production and pollination services. But changing almond acreage, pressure on honey prices, rising operating costs, declining forage, and imported honey are forcing beekeepers to adapt.

The panel considers what could make a meaningful difference. Randy argues for restoring forage through regenerative agriculture and improving the economics of domestic honey. Izzy sees promise in new honey bee health products and greater cooperation across the industry. Brandon points to the practical realities facing working beekeepers—from land and forage to fuel, labor, and the need to make beekeeping economically attractive to the next generation.

The conversation then turns to consumers. How do we communicate that protecting honey bees isn't simply about colony losses? Healthy agricultural soils, diverse forage, accurate honey labeling, and consumer choices all affect the future of beekeeping.

Audience questions expand the discussion into regenerative agriculture, bee pasture, youth education, and getting young people excited about working with honey bees.

And Randy closes with an important reminder: amid all the talk about Varroa, economics, forage, and regulation, don't forget to tell people why being a beekeeper is joyful.

  20. BTPS: Behind the Bees of "The Rivals of Amziah King" Bonus

    Show notes

What does it take to make beekeeping look authentic in a Hollywood movie? In this BT Short, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman talk with Adam Hickman of Foxhound Bee Company, who served as a bee wrangler and beekeeping consultant for The Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey.

Adam's involvement began when a member of the production team visited his Alabama bee supply business looking for inspiration. Before long, Adam and his team were working with the filmmakers—and teaching McConaughey how to look and move like a beekeeper.

Adam takes us behind the scenes of several major bee sequences, including an elaborate cutout staged with a real colony and the striking scene of McConaughey holding a queen while thousands of live bees gather on his arm. The filmmakers wanted real bees, minimal protective equipment, and no CGI substitutes, creating some unusual challenges for the bee-wrangling team.

He also explains how beekeeping equipment, honey-processing gear, colonies, comb, and even the layout of the honey house were sourced and managed for production. And while Hollywood occasionally wins out over absolute accuracy—yes, actors really do run while carrying full honey supers—Adam says the filmmakers made a serious effort to portray beekeepers and beekeeping authentically.

It's a fascinating look at what happens when the craft of beekeeping meets the craft of filmmaking—and how a group of Alabama beekeepers helped bring the bees to the big screen.
