  1. Indoor Parson's Chameleon Setups with Robin Villere

    Season 11, Episode 5

    Show notes

Parson's chameleons are famous for how much water they need. But how you provide it depends on where you live. In this Parson's Chameleon Month episode, I'm joined by Robin Villere of Nealon Reptiles. Robin keeps Parson's in a very humid climate, and I keep mine in a dry one. So Robin's challenge is getting water out of the system, and mine is constantly adding it in. We compare our approaches to indoor caging and hydration, including:

Why constant high humidity causes problems in a captive enclosure, even though wild Parson's live in it

How effective overnight fogging really is for hydration, and how much daytime touch-up is needed

How to measure whether your hydration system is working

Differences between watering wild-caught and captive-hatched animals

Whether this schedule works for other Calumma species like brevicorne, malthe, and the Shamrock chameleon

Care differences between Calumma parsonii parsonii and C. p. cristifer

We also talk about the Chameleon Academy "Parson's Pact," and how to honestly decide whether a Parson's is right for you.

  2. Parson's Chameleon Outdoor Keeping with James Cross

    Season 11, Episode 4

    Show notes

Parson's Chameleons deserve more than a month — but this week we're tackling one of the biggest questions in their care: should you keep them outside, and if so, how do you do it safely?

Joining Bill this week is James Cross, a master carpenter with years of firsthand experience keeping Parson's Chameleons outdoors through the swing of hot summers and cold winters. Together they dig into why outdoor keeping brings out a vibrancy in chameleons that's hard to replicate indoors, the real dangers you need to guard against, and the daily — sometimes hourly — judgment calls involved in knowing when to bring an animal in.

From there, James walks through the practical side of building an outdoor enclosure: shade coverage dense enough for a chameleon to fully disappear into, why a soil floor matters, escape-proofing against digging, and the surprising role duct-tape's cousin, Flex Seal, plays in weatherproofing a cage built to survive rain and sun.

Bill also shares a first look at the upcoming Chameleon Academy Parson's Chameleon Care & Husbandry Guide, in progress for more than 18 months and nearing release.

    In this episode:

    • Why outdoor keeping can be transformative for Parson's Chameleons
    • The dangers of unsupervised outdoor exposure
    • Reading color change as an early heat-stress warning sign
    • Building a shade-dense, escape-proof, weatherproof outdoor cage
    • Why "just move the indoor cage outside" is a mistake
    • A preview of the new Parson's Chameleon Care & Husbandry Guide

  3. Advanced Parson's Chameleon Husbandry with Craig Durbin

    Season 11, Episode 3

    Show notes

Parson's Chameleons aren't hard to keep alive — but getting them through a full life cycle, from wild-caught acclimation to successful breeding, is another matter. In this episode, Craig Durbin of Primo Chameleons joins the show to share what fifteen-plus years and over 20 clutches have taught him.

    We cover:

    • How Craig got started with Parson's in 2010, and what he had to figure out the hard way
    • Why Parson's require a completely different approach than panther chameleons
    • Madagascar's reversed seasons and how they affect import timing
    • Acclimating wild-caught animals — hydration, patience, and reading a chameleon that's shut down
    • Brumation: what it is, what triggers it, how it varies by species, and why Craig believes it extends lifespan
    • The enduring mystery of where chameleons actually go during their winter dormancy
    • Parasites, nighttime cooling, growth rates, and pairing behavior
    • The two-year incubation cycle that still doesn't fully make sense — even to breeders who've hatched dozens of clutches
    • Color variation across locality forms, and the realities of the Parson's market

  5. A Chameleon's Tolerance Zone

    Season 11, Episode 1

    Show notes

Ideal chameleon husbandry is a direction, not a destination. Just because our chameleon is alive, doesn't mean we can stop growing in how to improve our husbandry. In this first episode of season 11, Bill Strand lays out the concept of the tolerance zone and how understanding it can make us better keepers of chameleons.

  6. The Path Through Learning about Chameleons

    Season 10, Episode 18

    Show notes

What actually matters when you're starting with chameleons? Not the nice-to-know stuff, but the fundamentals that determine whether you succeed or struggle. In this episode, I walk you through the six core priorities that will carry you through your first year, from setting up your cage before your chameleon arrives to finding an exotic vet NOW (not during an emergency).

I'll also cover the most common beginning mistakes—the ones that cost you money, stress, and sometimes your chameleon's health. Things like bringing your chameleon home before the cage is ready, cutting corners on equipment to save money upfront, or adding too many chameleons too fast because the collector bug bites hard.

This is Part 2 of our Stage 1 exploration. Whether you're brand new or mentoring beginners, this episode gives you the practical framework for navigating the learning stage successfully.

    Learn. Understand. Pass It On.

  7. The Challenge of Learning About Chameleons

    Season 10, Episode 17

    Show notes

Starting with chameleons has never been more overwhelming. You're drowning in contradictory advice from social media, TikTok, and now AI—all delivered with equal confidence. How do you know who to trust when the beginner sounds more authoritative than the expert? In this episode, Bill explores why the beginner experience feels so chaotic in 2025, introduces the "information firehose problem," and gives you explicit permission to NOT understand everything right away. This is Part 1 of a two-part series on the start of the Chameleon Keeper's Journey. If you're feeling lost, confused, or like you're doing something wrong—this episode is for you.

In this episode, I map the entire chameleon keeper's journey—from the panic of keeping your first chameleon alive, through the exploration of finding your own approach, to the fulfillment of giving back to the community.
