Top 5 Ways to Keep Jesus at the Center When Feelings Get Strong
Show notes
Strong feelings can be beautiful—and confusing. Whether you’re dating, engaged, or simply navigating deep friendships, intense emotions can cloud judgment and pull your focus away from the One who should remain first. For Christian singles and couples, the goal isn’t to suppress feelings but to submit them to Jesus so they serve His purposes rather than compete with them.
Keeping Jesus at the center when feelings get strong is one of the most practical expressions of a Christ-centered relationship. It protects your heart (Proverbs 4:23), honors God with your body and decisions (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and builds a foundation that can withstand the ups and downs of real life. Here are five proven, biblical ways to stay anchored when emotions surge.
1. Pause and Pray Before You Act on the Feeling
When attraction, anger, disappointment, or excitement rises quickly, the first impulse is often to respond immediately. A wiser path is to pause. James 1:19 reminds us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. The same principle applies to romantic or relational intensity.
Before you text, call, confess deep feelings, or make a big decision, take the moment to pray. Ask Jesus what He thinks about the situation. Invite the Holy Spirit to give you clarity and self-control. This simple practice keeps Jesus at the center instead of letting feelings drive the conversation. Many Christian singles find that a short prayer changes the entire tone of the next interaction.
Practical tip: Keep a short prayer on your phone or in your notes—“Jesus, I give You these feelings. Lead me in truth and purity.” Use it the moment emotions start to dominate.
2. Measure the Feeling Against Scripture
Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable guides. Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as living and active, able to judge the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. When emotions grow strong, open your Bible and ask whether the feeling aligns with God’s character and commands.
For example, if you feel a strong desire to move the relationship forward physically, compare that urge with passages such as 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 and 1 Corinthians 6:18. If you feel intense frustration or the urge to withdraw, check it against Colossians 3:12-14, which calls believers to compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Letting Scripture speak first keeps Jesus—the Word made flesh—at the center of your decision-making.
This practice also protects you from the common trap of “following your heart” without first submitting your heart to God. A Christ-centered relationship is one in which both people regularly ask, “What does the Bible say?” rather than only “How do I feel?”
3. Invite Trusted Accountability Into the Conversation
Strong feelings thrive in isolation. Proverbs 11:14 says that where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. When emotions intensify—whether attraction, conflict, or confusion—bring a mature, same-gender Christian friend, mentor, or small-group leader into the loop.
Accountability doesn’t mean sharing every detail; it means giving someone permission to ask hard questions and speak truth in love. A trusted friend can help you see whether your feelings are leading you toward greater Christlikeness or away from it. This step is especially valuable for Christian singles who may not yet have a spouse to process with. It also models humility and keeps the relationship from becoming an idol.
Consider setting up a regular check-in with your accountability partner specifically about the relationship. The simple knowledge that someone else is praying and watching with you often steadies the heart.
4. Prioritize Worship and Spiritual Disciplines Together (or Individually)
When feelings are high, it’s easy to replace time with Jesus with time focused on each other. A powerful counter-move is to deliberately put worship, prayer, and Scripture first. Matthew 6:33 promises that when we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, the other things we need will be added.
If you’re in a relationship, plan intentional times to read the Bible or pray together before you talk about “us.” Attend church together with the primary goal of meeting Jesus, not just spending time with each other. If you’re single, protect your personal quiet time even more carefully when a new connection begins to occupy your thoughts. Singleness can be a gift that allows undistracted devotion (1 Corinthians 7:32-35); don’t trade that gift for emotional intensity without guarding it.
Many couples who keep Jesus at the center report that shared spiritual practices actually deepen their emotional connection rather than diminish it. The feelings become healthier because they are rooted in something eternal.
5. Choose Obedience Over Temporary Emotional Relief
There will be moments when obeying Jesus feels harder than following the feeling. Maybe that means waiting longer for physical intimacy, having a difficult conversation about boundaries, or even stepping back from a relationship that is pulling you away from God. Jesus said in Luke 9:23 that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny themselves and take up their cross daily.
Obedience doesn’t mean feelings disappear; it means you refuse to let them have the final word. When you choose the path of purity, honesty, forgiveness, or self-control even while your emotions protest, you are declaring that Jesus is Lord of your heart. Over time, this repeated choice builds spiritual muscle and protects the relationship from the damage that unchecked feelings can cause.
Remember that God is not against your joy. He is for your good and His glory. Submitting strong feelings to Him is one of the clearest ways to keep Jesus at the center and to experience the peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Putting It All Together
Keeping Jesus at the center when feelings get strong is not a one-time decision; it is a daily practice. Pause and pray. Measure the feeling against Scripture. Invite accountability. Prioritize worship. Choose obedience. Each of these steps is simple, yet together they form a strong guardrail for your heart and your relationships.
Whether you are single, dating, or married, the invitation is the same: let Jesus remain first. When He is truly at the center, strong feelings no longer have to be feared or suppressed. They can be surrendered, refined, and used for His purposes. That is the path to lasting peace, purity, and a relationship that honors God.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my feelings are from God or just emotion?
Test them against Scripture, seek wise counsel, and watch the fruit. Feelings that draw you closer to Jesus, increase humility, and produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) are more likely aligned with God’s leading. Feelings that push you toward sin, secrecy, or self-centeredness should be submitted and redirected.
Is it wrong to have strong feelings in a Christian relationship?
No. God created emotions. The issue is not the presence of strong feelings but whether they are submitted to Jesus. Healthy Christian relationships include joy, attraction, and deep care—always under the lordship of Christ.
What if my partner and I disagree about boundaries when feelings are strong?
Return to Scripture together and invite a mature third party to help you both hear clearly. A Christ-centered relationship will prioritize obedience to God over personal preference. If one person consistently resists biblical boundaries, that is important information for the future of the relationship.
How can singles keep Jesus first when they really want a relationship?
Protect your daily time with God, stay connected to community, and refuse to make a potential spouse the center of your hope. Colossians 1:17 reminds us that in Jesus all things hold together—including your future. Trust His timing while you actively pursue Him.
Can strong feelings actually help me grow closer to Jesus?
Yes. When you bring intense emotions to Him in prayer and obedience, they become opportunities for deeper dependence. Many believers testify that seasons of strong feelings taught them more about surrender and God’s faithfulness than calmer times ever did.

When Is It Too Soon to Talk About Marriage?
Show notes
“When is it too soon to talk about marriage?” is one of the most common questions Christian singles ask. Bring it up too early and you risk scaring someone off or moving faster than God is leading. Wait too long and you may waste years in a relationship that was never heading toward covenant. For believers who take marriage seriously, the timing of this conversation matters. Scripture treats marriage as a lifelong covenant (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6), not a casual […]

The Top 5 Ways to Apologize That Actually Repair Trust
Show notes
Most apologies don’t repair trust. They temporarily quiet the conflict, then leave the same wound open. People say “I’m sorry” while defending themselves, minimizing the damage, or expecting the other person to move on immediately. In relationships—whether marriage, dating, friendship, or family—trust is rebuilt only when an apology demonstrates genuine ownership, empathy, and lasting change. If you’ve ever felt that your “sorry” didn’t land, or you’ve been on the receiving end of hollow apologies that left you more guarded, this […]

Top 5 Topics Christian Couples Avoid (And Why You Should Talk About Them)
Show notes
Honest conversation is one of the strongest foundations of a Christ-centered marriage. Yet many Christian couples quietly avoid certain subjects, hoping silence will keep the peace. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that “a gentle answer turns away wrath,” while Ephesians 4:15 calls us to speak the truth in love. Avoiding hard topics does not produce peace; it often produces distance, resentment, and missed opportunities for deeper unity. In this article we explore the five topics Christian couples most commonly avoid, why […]

Top 5 Signs He Is Pursuing You With Intent, Not Just Attention
Show notes
In today’s dating landscape, attention is abundant but intentional pursuit is rare. A man can like your posts, send late-night messages, or call you “beautiful” while keeping things vague and low-effort. That is attention. Intentional pursuit looks different: it is steady, clear, sacrificial, and oriented toward a shared future. For Christian singles seeking a godly relationship, learning to distinguish the two protects your heart and honors the call to wise stewardship of emotions and time (Proverbs 4:23). This article outlines […]

Top 5 Ways to Meet Godly Singles Without an App (That Actually Work)
Show notes
Meeting godly singles without an app is still very possible—and for many Christians, it feels more natural and aligned with their values. Dating apps can be convenient, but they often lead to endless swiping, surface-level conversations, and the feeling that you’re shopping for a spouse rather than building a genuine connection. If you’re looking for a more intentional, faith-centered way to meet someone who shares your beliefs, these five approaches focus on real-life environments where character, faith, and compatibility can […]

Should You Date Someone From Your Own Church?
Show notes
“Should you date someone from your own church?” is one of the most common—and most debated—questions among Christian singles. On one hand, your local church is filled with people who already share your faith, your values, and your community. On the other, the idea of a relationship (or a breakup) playing out in the middle of Sunday mornings, small groups, and ministry teams can feel risky or even awkward. The short answer is that dating someone from your own church […]

Top 5 Things a Godly Mentor Will Tell You Before You Get Serious

Before you take the next step in a dating relationship and get serious, a godly mentor will usually slow you down with clear, biblical counsel. It means moving toward exclusive commitment, deeper emotional investment, and the possibility of marriage. A wise mentor who knows Scripture and has walked with couples through both healthy and painful relationships will often highlight the same foundational truths. These are […]

7 Non-Negotiables for a Christ-Centered Relationship

Why Many Christian Singles Worry More About Money Than Dating

Many Christian singles worry more about money than dating because one person is carrying the whole load. There is one paycheck, one rent payment, one emergency, and no second income to absorb a bad month. Dating can wait a week. Rent cannot. That is why money stress often outranks the search for a spouse, even among believers who still want marriage. The worry is not a lack of faith. It is the math of a single household.
