In this episode, I'm catching up with my friend and fellow therapist, Chris McDonald, to talk about integrating mind-body approaches into therapy and navigating the ups and downs of building a business beyond traditional clinical work.

Chris shares how she incorporates yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, Brainspotting, and parts work to help clients process trauma, grief, and emotional challenges. We also discuss her grief yoga retreats and how movement and somatic practices can support the healing process.

On the business side, Chris opens up about her experiences creating continuing education courses, launching memberships, hosting retreats, and developing additional income streams. She shares what she's learned from the ventures that didn't go as planned and how she's become more intentional about where she invests her time and energy.

  2. "I Don't Know What to Talk About Today": What to Do When Therapy Feels Stuck | private practice | clinical skills

    Episode 295

    Show notes

In this episode of The Therapy Show, I'm talking about one of those moments almost every therapist has experienced: a client sits down, you ask what they want to focus on, and they say, "I don't know what to talk about today."

I explore what that moment can actually mean, why it doesn't necessarily signal a bad or unproductive session, and how therapists can respond without scrambling to fill the silence or turning the session into a rapid-fire interview.

I also share practical ways to revisit treatment goals, explore what may be happening beneath the surface, use the here-and-now, and recognize when a quiet session may actually be a sign of progress.

I also talk about the importance of not automatically assuming avoidance, how to tell when therapy may need a new focus or a change in frequency, and a simple framework you can use in session: Pause, Review, Explore, Decide.

If you've ever wondered what to do when a client has no obvious agenda, this episode is for you.

I also share information about my newest CE podcourse, When Domestic Abuse Shows Up in Therapy: Recognition, Safety, and Referral, as well as free therapist resources and continuing education opportunities from Berries.

Domestic abuse does not always show up in obvious ways. Sometimes, a client may come into therapy presenting with anxiety, depression, confusion, isolation, diminished self-trust, or difficulty making decisions and the underlying issue may be an unsafe or controlling relationship.

In this Podcourse I'm joined by Jaclyn Fortier, LCMHC, a clinician, practice owner, and former domestic abuse safehouse supervisor. We talk about how domestic abuse can present in outpatient clinical care and what therapists can do when they begin to notice concerning patterns.

Jaclyn and I discuss subtle signs of psychological abuse, coercive control, financial abuse, intimidation, and isolation, as well as how to differentiate healthy relationship conflict from patterns of power and control. We also explore common barriers that may make it difficult for a client to leave an abusive relationship and how clinicians can support safety without pressuring clients to take action before they are ready.

We also cover safety planning, client autonomy, consultation, referral, community resources, and how to recognize when a situation may require support beyond the scope of outpatient therapy.

This episode is designed for mental health professionals who want to feel more prepared when domestic abuse concerns show up unexpectedly in clinical practice.

    Learning objectives:

    • Identify common psychological, emotional, physical, financial, isolation, intimidation, and coercive-control indicators of domestic abuse that may present in outpatient clinical settings.
    • Differentiate healthy relationship conflict and mutual decision-making from patterns that may indicate psychological abuse, coercive control, or domestic abuse.
    • Assess client safety concerns and describe common barriers that may affect a client's ability or readiness to leave an abusive relationship.
    • Identify appropriate safety-planning, consultation, referral, and community-resource considerations when working with clients who may be experiencing domestic abuse.

In this episode of The Therapy Show, I'm talking about therapy-fluent clients who understand their attachment style, trauma responses, boundaries, and patterns but still feel stuck.

  5. Political Stress in Therapy: How to Talk About Politics with Clients | private practice | values | client centered

    Episode 293

    Show notes

In this episode, I'm sharing practical ways therapists can make room for political stress in the therapy room without allowing the session to become a debate.

I also created a FREE quick-reference guide, Political Stress in Therapy: 10 Client-Centered Questions to Use in Session. It includes practical questions to help you move beyond the political headline and explore the emotions, values, boundaries, and next steps underneath a client's distress. Download it free here: https://lisa-mustard.aweb.page/free-political-stress-guide

Politics can affect our clients' sense of safety, identity, belonging, relationships, and hope for the future. I talk about how to move from the headline to its deeper meaning; validate a client's emotional experience without endorsing every opinion; help clients regulate, set boundaries, and take values-aligned action; and notice our own reactions as therapists.

I also address what to say when prospective clients ask where you stand politically and why it is okay for clients to decide they need a therapist who feels like the right fit for them.

For additional support, I mention How to Navigate Politics in Session Without Taking Sides, which offers structured prompts and guidance for ethical, client-centered conversations. I also share my Political Stress Ebook Workbook: Coping Strategies for Therapists, a downloadable, client-facing ebook that therapists can customize and rebrand with their own information.

Whether your clients are doomscrolling, fighting with family, feeling afraid about the future, or overwhelmed by the intensity of the news cycle, I hope this episode offers a grounded, practical way to respond.

When white-collar crime enters a family, the emotional fallout extends far beyond the person facing criminal charges. But are therapists prepared to support the spouses, children, and loved ones caught in the crisis?

In this episode, I'm drawing on my experience as a licensed marriage and family therapist and my personal story as the daughter of someone convicted of a white-collar crime to explore what mental health professionals need to know about working with these families.

I'll discuss the impact of betrayal, grief, shame, and stigma, along with practical clinical considerations for assessment, trauma-informed care, supporting children, and navigating ethical boundaries. I'll also share examples of what therapists should avoid saying and how to support clients without imposing personal judgments about forgiveness, reconciliation, or divorce.

My goal is to help therapists recognize the people behind the headlines and provide thoughtful, compassionate care to families navigating a white-collar legal crisis.

  10. Using Improv Comedy as a Therapeutic Tool with Dr. Juda Alcabes

    Episode 288

    Show notes

What happens when a licensed clinical social worker walks into an improv class and discovers a powerful clinical tool?

In this episode of The Therapy Show, I sit down with Dr. Juda Alcabes, also known as The Improv Therapist, to explore how improv comedy can be used therapeutically to treat anxiety, build intimacy, strengthen couples' connections, and help clients get out of their heads and into the present moment.

Dr. Juda shares how taking an improv class on a mental health day eventually led him to develop a clinical framework for bringing improv into therapy sessions. Whether you're a clinician curious about adding more play and experiential work into your practice, or someone who has always wanted to try improv, this conversation is insightful, practical, and fun.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • How improv can support anxiety treatment
    • Why play and spontaneity matter in therapy
    • How improv helps clients move from overthinking to experiencing
    • The connection between improv, intimacy, and relationships
    • Why therapists don't need to be performers to benefit from improv
    • How clinicians can thoughtfully integrate unique skills into their work

Dr. Juda Alcabes, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker based in South Florida who specializes in sex and porn addiction. Known as The Improv Therapist, he integrates improv comedy into clinical work with individuals, couples, and groups. Have you ever wondered if starting a podcast could help you grow your practice, build your professional reputation, or share your expertise in a bigger way?

In this episode of The Therapy Show, I'm talking to therapists, counselors, social workers, coaches, and mental health professionals who have thought about starting a podcast but aren't sure where to begin.

I share what I've learned from my own podcasting journey, including how The Therapy Show evolved into a continuing education platform and how podcasting can help therapists build trust, clarify their message, connect with other professionals, and create a body of work that reflects their expertise.

I also talk honestly about why podcasting is not a quick fix. A podcast works best when it has a clear purpose, a specific audience, and a connection to your larger professional goals.

    In This Episode, I Cover:

    • Why therapists are drawn to podcasting
    • How to clarify your podcast's purpose
    • Why your audience matters more than your microphone
    • How to choose a format that fits your energy and goals
    • Ethical considerations for therapist podcasters
    • Common mistakes therapists make when starting a podcast
    • How podcasting can support a practice, CE business, coaching offer, or consulting service
    • Questions to ask before you hit record

Therapists don't need to start a podcast just because podcasting is popular. But if you have a clear audience, a meaningful purpose, and a realistic plan, podcasting can be a powerful way to build trust, share your expertise, and create new professional opportunities.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Doug Novotny to explore how therapists can better navigate cultural and value differences in therapy without becoming political or losing clinical clarity.

We unpack what "culture" really means (beyond identity labels) and how moral foundations theory can help you understand your clients and yourself, on a deeper level. We also talk about why values are always present in therapy, even when we try to avoid them, and how to work with them ethically and effectively.

Inside this episode, we cover: ✔️ How to navigate cultural differences in therapy sessions ✔️ Why therapists often misunderstand culture (and what to do instead) ✔️ The role of values and morals in clinical work ✔️ How to stay neutral without ignoring what matters ✔️ The difference between validating feelings vs. agreeing with beliefs ✔️ How moral "blind spots" impact therapists and clients

If you've ever felt unsure about how to handle political, cultural, or value-based differences in your sessions, this conversation will give you a practical framework you can start using right away.

🎓 Dr. Novotny also shares his continuing education training on integrating culture and psychology- learn more: Fair For All

    Episode 278

    Show notes

🫐Sponsored by Berries: Use code TherapyShow50 for $50 off your first month - CLICK HERE for a free trial.🫐

In this episode of The Therapy Show, I sit down with nurse practitioner and entrepreneur Justin Allan Montgomery, founder of ProCourseStart, to talk about something so many of you ask me about - how to create and grow a continuing education business.

Justin shares his journey from working in urgent care and emergency settings to building a multi–seven-figure CE company that allowed him to retire from clinical practice at 39. We talk openly about burnout, the "time-for-money trap," and why so many therapists are looking for new ways to expand their impact and income without leaving the profession they love.

We dive into what actually makes a CE business successful. Justin breaks down the three types of CE models, explains why your value proposition is everything, and shares why building an audience is more important than just posting your course in a few Facebook groups and hoping for sales. We also talk about niching down, creating transformational (not just informational) courses, and how to position your expertise so it truly stands out.

If you've ever thought about turning your clinical experience into a course, or scaling the CE offerings you already have, this episode will give you a bigger vision for what's possible.

Justin has generously offered my listeners 25% off his ProCourse Start program. Just use the code LISA at checkout to receive your discount.
