The Scriptures Are Real

Courses, Education, Religion & Spirituality

The Scriptures Are Real (TSAR) with Kerry Muhlestein is a podcast where we look at elements of the scriptures that have become real to us. We interview both experts (people with language, archaeological, historical backgrounds, etc.), and lay folks, and explore times when the scriptures became real to them. This is done from the viewpoint of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We believe that there is real power in the scriptures and that as they become more real we can better apply them to our lives and draw more power from them.
If you listen to this podcast you will learn all kinds of interesting background information that will help you understand and learn more from the scriptures. We believe it will allow you to add real power to your life.
My gratitude to my co-host Lamar Newmeyer. Also to my friend Rich Nicholls, who composed the introductory music.

In this episode Kerry briefly goes through the background of the book, and then helps us see what is happening with the strange call and vision that Ezekiel sees. He explains what a heavenly council is and how Ezekiel experiences it. He looks at how God warned Ezekiel that his ministry will be difficult. He also looks at how Ezekiel sees that they will lose God's presence. Then Robbie Taggart joins Kerry to help us see how human Ezekiel is as he is asked to go through strange action after strange action as part of the way of prophesying God asks him to do. They examine how God was teaching them about what was going to happen in Jerusalem, They also look at what it must have been like for Ezekiel to be asked to do all of this. Then Kerry teaches again, He continues to follow Ezekiel's teachings as he works his way through the coming destruction of Jerusalem. He warns about the scattering and prophecies of the gathering. He also shows how Ezekiel prophesied that the people would get their hearts right with God at some point in the future and would truly keep covenant. He then looks at how Ezekiel teaches about Christ's atoning and forgiving abilities, and how He has no pleasure in punishing the wicked, but rather wants all to turn to Him and live. He looks at the pivotal point of the destruction of Jerusalem, and then how God uses Ezekiel to teach about the future of Israel and how they will come back to Him. In this context Kerry helps us understand what the famous prophesies about the dry bones being resurrected and the two sticks meant in their original context, and how the way we usually look at them is a good secondary meaning that is best understood in light of the original context and what God said these prophesies meant. He helps us see the importance of the gathering of Israel. Kerry then outlines how in the future, as part of the gathering, Israel will regain God's presence. This includes images of the temple the waters of life, and Kerry uses video to help illustrate.

In this episode Kerry and David Ridge, who wrote his dissertation on the Book of Job, help you see perspectives that will allow you to see Job in some new ways, and get more out of Job. During this they help you learn about poetic devices. They specifically address the role that Satan plays in the book, and how that may represent the fallen world, and what that may help you get out of the story. They also look at Job's faith and yet his ignorance in contrast with God, and how that plays into the story and carries along its major message. They help us understand Job's wife and his friends better, and especially what happens when Job finally learns from God. Then Kerry and Rosalynde Welch do a deep dive into one chapter of Job that is highly poetic. They explore the beautiful imagery and what it teaches us about our own learning and initiative, and God's, and how we can balance those two notions. They explore the wisdom of God as presented in the chapter. Then Kerry and Robert Millet explore how Job teaches us about faith. They examine the questions Job asks and how he doesn't find answers to them, but demonstrates enough faith that he can grow and develop as God would want, and what that means for us.

In this episode Kerry mentions an episode of the Twenty Something podcast. You can find it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xAyP7_i-4M.

In this episode Kerry and Lori Denning explore the story of the Book of Esther. They explore the literary elements that help us understand the book and its themes. They look at how Esther goes from being depicted as passive to active and can be our own story. They look at the role of God in the book, and also how the book shows how you can move forward given whatever your circumstance as you just take advantage of whatever is given you and trust in God. They also look at the difficulty of being religious and faithful in the midst of people who are upset with us for our views. Then Kerry and Justin Top, a military chaplain who teaches other chaplains, explore what happens when we don't see the miracles we are praying for. Or how we may feel when we see others experience miracles but they don't. They discuss how we feel when that happens and provide some ideas for how to think about it and how not to think about it. They also explore the notion that sometimes the struggle we go through when we don't see miracles is a form of grace that we need even more than the miracle. Then Kerry and Julianne explore the same topic, looking at the scriptures are lives of prophets to help us understand this difficult and painful element of all our lives. They also delve into the fact that we all sometimes see some miracles but not others in our lives. They discuss that miracles are related to faith, but when we don't see miracles it is not because we don't have faith.
