Cricket Et Al

Pete and Gid survey the wreckage of a grim day for Australian cricket, as Pat Cummins’s men surrender the Cape Town Test to South Africa by 176 runs, and the series 1-2. Framed with the help of the blokes from The Test and joined by spontaneous special guest Pommie Mbangwe, they ask how good are South Africa and where Australia go from here? Andrew McDonald walks past, the Proteas drop in: it’s all happening at the end of this amazing tour.

Pete and Gid luxuriate in a Test match that refuses to die, with South Africa batting all the fourth day to set Australia 288 to win on the fifth. A record-breaking partnership by Ryan Rickelton and Wiann Mulder almost broke the visiting attack before brilliant fielding wound up the innings. But what about the bowling? And who would you rather be going in to the climax of one of the great modern series?

Pete and Gid watch a classic series go down to the wire, with each of Australia and South Africa going into the fourth day of the Third Test a chance of securing the number one ranking in the World Test Championship. What is Josh Inglis’s unique record? How many balls has Pat Cummins bowled without taking a wicket? How good is Mitchell Starc, and how poor were the shots by Aiden Markram and David Bedingham?

Pete and Gid watch Australia dig right in at Newlands on a day of defiant and increasingly positive batting by Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Matthew Renshaw and Cameron Green. But whither Marnus Labuschagne after another failure, and Steve Smith in his enigmatic absence? Also: scenery! Plus: a TGC podbombing….

Pete and Gid bear witness to a three-session Jane Saville Day - we’ll explain - with Australia almost out of it before they surged back into it thanks to Mitchell Starc and South Africa squandered a brilliant opening partnership. Also: Chris Tavare and david Warner, separated at birth?

Australia have a mountain to climb in Cape Town, and so do Pete and Gid, who ascend Table Mountain to produce the podcast from a record altitude. Then they return to the scene of the crime, recalling the events of 2018 from the same press conference location in which Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft tangled themselves in deception. What fate awaits Pat Cummins's Australians this time round? Only a day til we find out.

Pete and Gid head off the beaten track to bring you highlights of their road trip on the Western Cape, starting in a tree and ending in a graveyard - South Africa’s first post office, the Bartolomeo Dias Maritime Museum, CP Roasters, Marloth Nature Reserve and Swellendam Cemetery Central - while occasionally touching on cricket and related matters. Includes a boot, a caravel and Pete’s expert handling of the selfie stick.

Pete and Gid peer through the rain and clouds to see South Africa trounce Australia by an innings and 31 runs at St George's Park, with Kagiso Rabada eclipsing Steve Smith, Scott Boland impersonating Horatius on the bridge to no avail, and Pat Cummins equivocal about the future of the batting unit. To Capetown at one-all: what a prospect.

Pete and Gid watch a startling Australian capitulation on the fourth day of the Second Test, with speed then spin disposing of thirteen wickets, including Marnus Labuschagne, Beau Webster and Matthew Renshaw twice. What gives with Steve Smith? Can Australia hold out on the last day? Is change coming? Plus shout outs to some of our favourite subscribers, and a twisted outro.

Pete and Gid watch South Africa turn the tables on Australia at St George's Park with a stunning day of batting led by their captain Temba Bavuma, whose highest Test score was the basis for a huge total, and whose declaration gained his team a late wicket. But can South Africa roll Australia twice in the remaining two days? Who would tip anything in this topsy-turvey series dominated by the bowlers, and the bowlers as batters?

Pete and Gid pay tribute to the cheapest bowler round - in the nicest possible way - after another staggering bowling performance from Scott Boland at St George’s Park in Gqeberha reduced South Africa to five for 97 on a much-shortened second day. A fine innings from Temba Bavuma has kept the home team in touch; the pitch may not get easier to bat on; the game is afoot.

Pete and Gid hold a press conference to celebrate seventy-four deliveries at St George's Park and several hours of rain, but there's enough time to laud Scott Boland, lament Nathan Lyon, and recall the maestro Barry Richards - revealing an uncanny connection to the Lalor clan. Plus: does Gqeberha have the slowest groundstaff in the world? Also: is there more rain on the way?

Pete and Gid lie back and enjoy the five-day feeling of an old-fashioned Australian Test match win in Durban, where Pat Cummins's team won by 214 runs on the back of a great ensemble performance featuring Matthew Renshaw, Josh Hazlewood and a host of co-stars. Nine bowlers! No dropped catches! A selection Hail Mary that didn't quite pay off, but not to worry! Also a superb performance as captain from Cummins, praise be to him.

Pete and Gid watch Australia take a stranglehold on the First Test, after setting South Africa 421 to win and picking up four wickets in the concluding session of the fourth day. Is Steve Smith OK? Is there nothing Mattew Renshaw can’t do? Is there any danger of spectators turning up? Also: just how to cope with the hole in our lives when there’s no Saily live read to do....

Pete and Gid watch a relentless Australia choke and neutralise South Africa on a classic third day at Kingsmead, with the wickets shared, and the catches almost monopolised by Steve Smith, who broke the fielding record for a non-wicketkeeper. Plus: Gaz is back! Also: Nic Maddinson gets off his pair! But can the light hold out long enough for Australia to prosecute their advantage?
