  1. South Africa vs Australia 3rd Test: Menners Minutes Day 5 'Disaster for Australia'

    Show notes

Australia's tour of South Africa ends in humiliating fashion as the hosts complete a comprehensive 176-run victory, winning the series 2-1 and claiming the number one spot in Test cricket.

Menners reflects on one of the lowest points of the Pat Cummins era, as Australia collapse for just 111 chasing 288. Kagiso Rabada strikes early before Simon Harmer tears through the batting order with a sensational six-wicket haul, finishing with 10 wickets for the match.

The review examines Australia's disastrous batting, questionable selections, Cummins' captaincy and the growing concerns surrounding Nathan Lyon. Menners also looks at the individual performances across the series, identifying some positives in Matt Renshaw, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green, while questioning the future direction of the Australian team.

With the New Zealand summer, India tour and Ashes ahead, Menners argues that significant changes are needed, including a new captain and chairman of selectors. Is this the beginning of the end of the Cummins era?

  2. South Africa vs Australia 3rd Test: Menners Minutes Day 4 'Advantage South Africa'

    Show notes

Australia face a daunting final-day challenge in Cape Town after South Africa fought back brilliantly on Day 4 to set a target of 288 for victory. Starting at 4/140, the Proteas reached 387 all out, thanks to superb centuries from Wiaan Mulder (115) and Ryan Rickelton (101), who combined for a crucial 154-run partnership.

Menners examines how Australia's bowling attack struggled to break through for much of the day, before some outstanding fielding, including run-outs from Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis, helped Australia take six wickets in the final session. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers, while Nathan Lyon's effectiveness on the turning pitch comes under scrutiny.

With Australia needing 288 to win the Test and the series, Menners looks at the pressure facing the batting lineup, including Travis Head, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis and a potentially playing-for-his-Test-career Marnus Labuschagne. There's also discussion around David Warner's criticism of Marnus, Steve Smith's future, Pat Cummins' captaincy and whether it's time for a major shake-up of Australia's selection panel.

South Africa are favourites heading into the final day, but Australia have a chance to produce another famous Newlands run chase.

Steve Smith made history by passing Steve Waugh on Australia’s all-time Test run-scoring list, while South Africa’s bowlers kept the pressure on before bad light brought an early end to play.

  19. What Are We Worried About? Looking Back at Sandpapergate

    Show notes

Australia's Test series against South Africa is just around the corner, so Menners and Damian Watson get stuck into the rivalry, the state of Australia's white-ball cricket and, inevitably, the ghosts of Sandpapergate.

Australia has already lost the ODI series, raising questions about the middle order, Pat Cummins' captaincy and who can fill the Glenn Maxwell-shaped gaps in the side. Jack Edwards' breakout performance and Sam Harper's push for Test selection also get plenty of attention.

There's also plenty happening off the field, with Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird stepping down amid the ongoing Big Bash privatisation saga, while the boys discuss the future of the BBL and whether fans are at risk of losing the identity of their teams.

And then it's back to 2018. Menners reflects on covering Sandpapergate at the time, the toxic atmosphere surrounding that South Africa series, Steve Smith's emotional press conference and how the scandal changed Australian cricket forever.

    Key moments:

(04:55) Why Australia-South Africa is still such a fierce rivalry
(08:48) Jack Edwards' breakout performance and Australia's ODI middle-order problem
(13:20) Australia's World Cup concerns and the Pat Cummins captaincy question
