Death and Slammy's Record Room

Music, Music Commentary, Music History

Two old buddies pick an album each week and do a deep dive on a few songs. We discuss some history about the band and the album, and any anecdotes about our personal relationship to the music. We keep it honest with each other and maybe enjoy telling the other guy his taste sucks more than we should.

The third full length album from Slug and Ant is poised for them breakthrough on a national stage. They help Rhymesayers Entertainment level up as well. In the second half we talk about the greatest live karaoke band that’s ever existed. A fun little side project that ended up being more popular than it had any rights to put together an excellent collection of songs. Did Spike and the boys reach the peak of Gimmie Gimme Mountain? 2. Johnny Cash - Live at Folsom Prison & Propagandhi - Supporting Caste

    Episode 21

    Show notes

This week we dive into the best live record ever recorded in a prison. So far. Johnny Cash’s career resurgance comes after he plays for inmates at Folsom Prison. The Man in Black was special and this concert demonstrates exactly that. In the second half we talk about a sea change for Propagandhi. They add a second guitar to the mix. They’re not quite the prog-metal band they’re going to become and definitely not the bubble gum skate punk band they started out as. Is this the pinnacle of the most important punk back since The Clash? Listen and find out.

    Episode 20

    Show notes

We aren’t talking about the 1977 Charles Bronson film, or albino bison. We’re talking about the modern day outlaw country artist! The White Buffalo had a real moment getting a bunch of songs on TV shows, even one from this record we’re talking about, but y’know, they did. And we talk about Hardcore legends Snapcase’s 3rd album Designs for Automotion. A mild change of pace for Snapcase, but damn does it go hard! Is it Automation or Automotion? Listen and find out.

Episode 019 - Death By Stereo - If looks could kill, I’d watch you die & Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

It’s a few weeks later than when I officially picked it but we finally cover Amy Winehouse’s classic album “Back to Black”. Her star burned might bright before it went out rather than fading away slowly over time. And we talk about Death By Stereo’s debut album. These guys fill a certain niche perfectly. It’s a shame more people don’t like it. These guys should be bigger than most the bands we talk about. Why aren’t they? Listen and find out.

In the back half we talk about one of the best new bands going right now Militarie Gun!! God Save the Gun is their latest record and at least one of us thinks it rules. Listen and find out.

Episode 013 - Mason Jennings - Century Spring & Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, but not stranger than Death’s Mason Jennings pick. HEYOOOO!! This week we talk about Minneapolis folk troubadour Mason Jennings and his 3rd studio album Century Spring. In the 2nd half we dive into a complicated era for punk rock stalwarts Bad Religion and their 1994 major label “debut?” Stranger Than Fiction. Is this one better than the holy trinity of Suffer, No Control and Against the Grain? Only a fool would make that claim. Which fool does? Listen and find out.

Episode 012 - Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers)

We bomb atomically, with Socrates' philosophies and hypothesis. Wait, wrong album. 30 some years ago, Nine unknown dudes from the smallest borough of New York City formed like Voltron and made what is arguably the most important hip-hop record of all time. It’s Slammy’s birthday takeover and we deep dive on 36 Chambers. What about this grimy, rough and tumble street rap record appealed to some young suburban punk rock kid? Listen and find out.

We’re marching up to your gates today and demanding you listen to our pod! This week Death picks The Flatliners change of pace record Inviting Light. The Flats take a break from the break-neck speed they tend to operate at and rock at a more leisurely pace. We have thoughts about it! Slammy picked The Menzingers turning point record On the Impossible Past. This is when The Menzo’s figured out the formula and became the band still rocking socks off today. Does Death finally change his mind about these guys? Listen and find out.

Episode 010 - AFI - All Hallows E.P. & Frank Black - Teenager of the Year

Is AFI a halloween band? Davey Havok thinks so and he’s the frontman so who are we to argue. It’s probably because of the halloween themed 7” they put out when they were at the peak of their powers. Or all the goth stuff they kept doing for 5 more years. We also dig into The Pixies former frontman's second solo effort Teenager of the Year. Frank Black is a prolific and eclectic songwriter on this album. 22 songs on this one, and he had popped out a solo record a year before this and another record shortly after. Busy fella. Is this output better than The Pixies? Listen and find out.

    Episode 009 - Toadies - Hell Below/Stars Above & The Gaslight Anthem - The ‘59 Sound

This week we dive into Toadies follow up record to their breakout platinum debut LP Hell Below/Stars Above. Are Toadies a one-hit wonder? What do you call it when the one record had a bunch of hits? 1 record wonder? We also get into nostalgia punk legends The Gaslight Anthem. Gaslighting wasn’t a thing in the zeitgeist when these guys picked a name apparently. They were already blowing up before The ‘59 Sound launched them to the moon and into our hearts.

This week we dive into Fuagzi’s debut LP that’s really a mash-up of two EP’s 13 Songs. I’m not sure what you call Fugazi; post-Hardcore, emo, post-punk? Whatever it is, one of us loves it, find out which! We also get into None More Black’s debut album File Under Black. Coming out of the ashes of Kid Dynamite and being on Fat Wreck Chords these guys should have been a big deal. Can we answer why it didn’t quite click for them? Listen and find out!
