Different Points Podcast
A podcast in short bursts. Each episode poses one question, and two people answer it from where they actually stand.
Roy Coughlan (The Podfather) and Catherine Llewellyn (Beingspace.world) sit on different sides of most things — life experience, worldview, the way they arrive at an answer. Different Points isn't about reaching agreement. It's about hearing two honest responses to the same question, side by side, in under 10 minutes.
No script, no debate to win. Just one question, two points of view, and whatever truth sits between them.
New episodes drop Monday through Friday. Pick a question, press play, and see where you land.

#55 When Enough Is Enough
Season 1, Episode 55
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask a simple question: how do you know when enough is enough? Catherine says most of the time we already know, whether it is time to leave a party, end a relationship, take a break from work or stop recording. She explains how we override that sense with alcohol, tiredness, too much sugar or too much coffee, and why it is worth protecting and rebuilding if you have lost touch with it. Roy shares how he and Catherine settled on recording in batches of seven, with a backlog so the show always goes out, even when someone is away or ill. He talks about cooking only what he and his son will eat so nobody has to leave food on the plate, and about why people drink past the point of enough, which he sees as escapism and a way of covering pain. They close by asking listeners what comes to mind when enough is enough.

#54 What Are You Pretending Not to Know
Season 1, Episode 54
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine take on a slightly odd topic: what are you pretending not to know, and what do you really know? Roy starts with something he has noticed in people’s emotions. Some people, women first and then men too, laugh in a conversation when nothing is funny, to get you to laugh and be liked. He knows it, never says it to them, and has found that people who do it are often not as straight as they come across. Catherine says she has been in those moments too, and she is not good at pretending, so people see a strange look on her face. For her, pretending not to know often means carrying on with something she knows is a waste of energy so she can stay busy and avoid facing that she doesn’t know what to do next. She gives an example from years ago, when she did executive coaching for large corporate organisations. She loved it and her identity was tied up with it, but she knew it was time to stop and pretended she didn’t, because she had no idea what she would do next. Her experience is that life is not impressed when she pretends not to know something and keeps presenting her with the truth, so she no longer tries. Roy adds that living in Poland, he sometimes pretends not to understand Polish, to see what people say when they think he can’t follow. Catherine shares how her father did the same in Italy, where he worked as a civil engineer during the war. A man criticised his skiing at length in front of him, and at the bottom of the slope her father thanked him for the feedback in fluent Italian and said he could have told him himself. She closes by inviting listeners to reflect on what they are pretending not to know and to send in their insights.

#53 The Freedom to Change Your Mind
Season 1, Episode 53
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask whether you can change your mind. Catherine can, but not when someone is trying to force her, because it’s her mind. She also admits she can get stuck, and links it to the sunk investment fallacy: the more you have put into something, the harder it is to let go, whether it’s an offering nobody wants despite years and money spent on marketing, or a 12-year relationship that has run its course. Her attachment is tied to what she has invested, but she points out that having invested a lot doesn’t mean letting go is wrong, and that it is wasting good money after bad to keep pouring more in. She warns that some influencers and business growth services will simply encourage people to keep spending on a business that will never work, while others will honestly tell you whether it’s worth the investment. Roy shares how this very show came about. Catherine sent him a voice message suggesting a podcast together, and his first reaction was that he had too much on his plate. Within minutes he changed his mind and suggested doing short episodes in batches, and that became Different Points. He says he has always been willing to change direction in business too, including when a partner doesn’t bring their A game, even after investing a lot of money, because the short-term pain is usually better in the long term. His advice is to use your intuition, your gut and your heart as well as your head, since the head alone can lead to the wrong decisions. Catherine closes with a quote from Timothy Leary: you’re only as young as the last time you changed your mind. Roy asks listeners when they last changed their mind, noting that some people stick to a decision even when presented with facts.

#52 When to Push and When Not to Push
Season 1, Episode 52
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine answer a listener request from Anthony Semeroff, a three-time guest on Catherine’s other show, who asked when to push and when not to push. Roy takes it as a question about pushing himself. He has goals in his business and pushes towards them, but he has learned to notice when the battery is going down and not fight through it. He gives last week as an example: Thursday was incredible and he got a huge amount done, then on Friday he was at 20 percent, so he didn’t push and simply accepted it. Catherine says she has a tendency to overpush until she collapses, and she is practising not doing that. For her the key is whether she is pushing for something or against something. If she pushes when she shouldn’t, she is fighting her own energy and intuition, and that is when it doesn’t work. On a project she pushes when there is traction and momentum, but when everything is failing it’s the time to analyse why, decide whether to stop or revive it, and push again once it gains traction. She also applies this to coaching: you don’t push someone unless they have contracted with you to do so, in a fully informed way, and you don’t keep pushing after the push they asked for. She wants no one to push her unless she has asked, and says the same applies in personal and work relationships, and for coaches and therapists. She closes by inviting listeners to notice what they are pushing today, whether it feels constructive or like fighting something, and, without pushing, to tell people about the show.

#51 One Small Step Today
Season 1, Episode 51
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask what one small step you will take today. Catherine says she takes lots of small steps, but the one that matters right now is part of getting back into a good rhythm between work, relaxation, looking after her home, time with friends and her health. Today she is trying out a new version of that rhythm, and she started it by getting up at six, well before usual. Being ahead of the day makes it easier to fit in the small jobs, like the dishwasher and laundry, around her work and keep a flow going. Roy says that with so many businesses and so many balls in the air, he can feel overwhelmed by everything that looks important. His step today was to pick the big task first, the “eat the frog” approach, waking up at five to do it, and not adding more on top. He plans to focus on one or two money-making priorities at a time for the week, since hopping between three or four means none of them get finished and they just stay on the list. For him, the small step is the one that leads to the big steps.

#50 What Does a Good Life Mean
Season 1, Episode 50
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine reach their 50th episode and ask what a good life means. Roy thanks listeners for coming back and says the show is doing well in the charts and downloads. For him, a good life is about being present, not about owning a beautiful house or a fancy car that never breaks down, a point he makes after his own car broke down at the weekend. It is the people you surround yourself with, being close to family and loved ones, and enjoying and nourishing yourself with good food, not junk and energy drinks. Catherine says there isn’t one good life for everybody. Some of her friends define it as skiing every year, homes in London, the country and abroad, several cars, private schools and staff, and for them that is a good life, until they realise it has become a burden to manage and no longer fits. She shares a recent epiphany: she had been working very hard towards something, realised she didn’t actually want it, let it go, and her whole life changed from a drudge to something beautiful, because her life was already good in the way she wanted it. Roy adds that he loves cooking and putting love into food for the people he feeds, while a friend who eats out or has food made for him is missing something that is part of Roy’s good life. Catherine agrees, saying she would often rather eat her own cooking at home than go out for a meal. She closes by asking what a good life is for you, whether you are living it, and if not, what adjustments, even negotiations with the people in your life, you could make.

#49 A Question to End Each Day
Season 1, Episode 49
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask what question ends your day. Catherine has two. The practical one is what she is doing tomorrow, which she checks or sets so she knows where her focus will go. The one she asks while winding down is how she feels about her day and her life, and whether things feel right. If something doesn’t, she uses a technique she was taught years ago called dream programming. She relaxes in bed, reflects briefly, then drops a request into her subconscious, such as asking it to resolve this overnight or give her clarity for the morning, and lets it go. She often wakes up with clarity, or a sense that something has resolved itself on a deeper level during the night. Roy says he does something similar when he wants an answer, but rarely, since he is usually crashing at the end of the day. He used to write his to-do list the night before and now sometimes writes it that morning, waking up naturally early and getting things done. He sometimes reflects on whether he enjoyed his day, but most of his thinking and strategising about his businesses happens while out on a walk, not at a set time at night. Catherine adds that with clients working on a gradual shift, they sometimes agree a specific end-of-day question tied to that project, so they notice subtle changes day to day, and she has made that a discipline for herself when working on something for a period of time.

#48 Choosing Joy Intentionally
Season 1, Episode 48
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine talk about what brings them joy and whether we can choose it on purpose. Roy’s joy comes from being around loved ones and being present with them. This weekend that meant cooking with his son and taking him fishing again, watching him get his hook caught in a tree and reel in seaweed, plus walks and conversations with him and phone calls with his mum. He also finds joy when people spread the word about him, like a recent case where someone in a business group told a stranger to talk to him, and it turned into a client. Catherine says a lot of things bring her joy, and often it comes from an unexpected miracle. She describes waking up to a tree outside her window full of tiny birds singing and dancing on the branches, like a tree decorated with singing ornaments. She also shares what happens when she puts a chicken carcass out on the grass: small birds arrive first, then ants, then bigger birds, and finally a bird of prey whose wingspan fills the glass door as it swoops down and takes it without touching the ground. Her other great source of joy is client sessions where someone shares something unexpected that they have done or realised, including a group who told her that the work they did on energy in organisations helped them save 2,000 redundancies. She takes no credit, but loves that the way they worked together opened something up. Roy adds that he loves watching nature outside his windows too, the foxes, pheasants, ants, the occasional hedgehog and, for the first time, a mouse darting out for scraps. Catherine closes by asking whether you can choose joy intentionally today, and do it for someone else, since other people benefit when you do.

#47 What We’re Unlearning
Season 1, Episode 47
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask what they’re each unlearning. Catherine starts by questioning the premise itself, wondering whether saying “I’m ready to unlearn this” is ever really true, since for her unlearning usually only becomes visible after it’s already happened rather than before. She gives two concrete examples from starting her podcast: she’d developed a slow, deliberate, slightly deeper speaking style from years of running groups and coaching, which worked in that context but put podcast listeners to sleep before the episode ended, forcing her to notice and undo it. She also had to unlearn the conversational habit of building on what someone else was saying, since solo episodes meant there was no one to respond to, and she had to find a different way of carrying a show by herself. Her conclusion is that no one really knows what they need to unlearn until they’re already in the middle of unlearning it. Roy frames his unlearning around belief systems shaped by real-world events: during Ireland’s Celtic Tiger years he believed the government was the best thing going, building roads and hospitals, only to later conclude the opposite. He describes a similar process around 2020, when he had to unlearn the belief that what was being pushed on everyone was actually good for them, piecing it together by bringing on different guests, researchers and scientists and reading extensively, even while facing pushback from people who initially disagreed with him before more of them came around. Catherine adds that she didn’t personally have to unlearn that particular belief, having been raised in a natural health environment with no vaccinations or conventional medicine, so the idea that the body is designed to heal itself was never new to her. But she watched many people around her go through that exact revelation, often as a genuine shock, since they’d been raised to believe the body left alone would simply fall apart, and she makes a point of naming how painful that specific unlearning process actually was for people, rather than pretending it’s easy.

#46 Everyday Spiritual Practices
Season 1, Episode 46
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine share how they actually practice presence day to day. Roy describes his approach as having evolved over the years into appreciating the earth, the sun, and the food grown from both, staying grateful for what sustains him and paying close attention while he’s out walking, enough that he notices when he feels out of sync and knows to step back, take a break, read, or simply stop staring at a computer. He’s not attached to any particular belief system, has friends across many religions, and sees everyone as part of a shared collective regardless of what they individually believe, with presence itself being the real practice rather than any fixed ritual. Catherine agrees and adds that remembering we’re all part of the same collective, no matter our beliefs, is itself a spiritual practice, one she has to actively choose, especially since she lives and works alone much of the time and can start to feel isolated before catching herself and remembering she’s actually connected to everything and everyone. She describes a deliberately playful technique she uses: sitting and telling herself, as if it were true, that nobody likes her, nobody cares, nobody wants to talk to her, and finding that within seconds laughter bubbles up because her body already knows it’s false, which is exactly the point, the exercise snaps her back to what’s actually true rather than what she’s spiraling into. She contrasts this with wallowing in boredom, loneliness, or lack, something everyone gets stuck in sometimes, noting that even her brother used a similar discipline as a kid, cataloguing what’s wrong then deciding what to actually do next. Alongside that mental practice, she names physical daily habits that pull her back into presence: stretching and feeling grateful for having a body, yin yoga, walking, dancing, and simply watching the sunrise or sunset.

Show notes
In this episode, Roy asks Catherine point blank: are you living your values? Catherine says she’s doing her best, and that the honest answer involves two shifting things, she feels she lives from her values more as time passes, but also notices more clearly when she doesn’t, while becoming more forgiving of herself either way. She used to treat living your values as an all-or-nothing standard, where any slip counted as failure, but now sees her own human frailty as part of the point of having a life at all, since the whole purpose of being human rather than some disembodied spirit floating in the cosmos is to practice living from values and keep discovering what they actually are. She shares a specific moment from the previous morning, waking up with a fresh, first-day-of-life feeling and suddenly recognizing a way she’d been fighting herself, pushing for something she didn’t really want or care about, and the instant she let that go, the whole day opened up differently. For her, that kind of recognition isn’t about catching a failure, it’s a small awakening, part of an ongoing, organic unfolding rather than a fixed destination, and she notes that being stretched in life is exactly what reveals how courageous you really are and how closely you’re actually following your values. Roy responds that sometimes living your values isn’t even a conscious act, other people observing you and naming what they see is often what makes you aware of it yourself, similar to the ripple effect they’ve discussed before. He also frames staying aligned with your values as something you adjust in real time when life throws a curveball, using the image of taking a wrong side street, meeting an oncoming oil tanker, and simply reversing back to the main road as his metaphor for correcting course without losing the thread of who you’re trying to be.

#44 The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Season 1, Episode 44
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine explore how small acts of kindness ripple outward. Roy’s approach is less about grand gestures and more about how he lives day to day, letting a car pull out from a side street, stopping at a crossing even when he doesn’t have to, and in business or community settings, always asking how he can help someone rather than how he can sell them something. He points out the ripple effect isn’t really about immediate payback, it’s that the person you helped goes on to help someone else, who helps someone else, and eventually it circles back around to benefit him anyway, even though that was never the point. Catherine builds on this with a piece of research Roy sent her, that rudeness spreads like a virus, making the person on the receiving end more likely to be rude to others for up to 24 hours, and that kindness works the same way in reverse. She illustrates it with life on the narrow country lanes near her home, where drivers who meet head-on often have to reverse a long way to let each other pass, and nearly everyone does it with waves, smiles and good humour rather than frustration. She shares a specific story of meeting a fuel tanker on one of those lanes, telling the driver she couldn’t reverse because she’s a woman, only for a passing farmer to jump in and reverse her car for her, the two of them then praising each other so warmly it felt like a scene from a TV show. She also describes a quieter form of kindness, making genuine eye contact with people who are anxious or frightened, recalling a garden centre reopening after Covid lockdown where the masked, visibly anxious staff visibly relaxed once she made a point of smiling and greeting each of them directly. Her closing point is that kindness, including kindness toward yourself, costs nothing and changes how you feel and sleep that same day.

#43 The Importance of Community
Season 1, Episode 43
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine explore why community matters so much and how differently it works today. Catherine opens with a relocation agent who used to tell her they’d find a neighbourhood full of her “like-minded people,” only for Catherine to point out that her like-minded people are scattered across the world, not clustered in one place. She breaks community down into layers: simple everyday kindness, like a neighbour who says hello or stops to greet your dog, and the deeper layer of genuine colleagues and peers, like the podcasting community she and Roy both rely on. Her core point is that humans are genetically wired to need and thrive in community, but what community actually has to provide has become far more multi-layered than the old village model, where one person tended wounds and another built houses. Roy approaches it through the groups he’s deliberately built around himself: joining, then forming, his own Toastmasters group specifically with people he liked spending time with in order to overcome his fear of public speaking, and later the business communities he’s part of, the Connected Leaders Academy and his own Authority Alliance (theauthorityalliance.com). His rule is to do things with people he genuinely enjoys, not people he’s chasing money alongside, since chasing the dollar tends to put you around the wrong people, drains your energy, and eventually falls apart anyway once people stop trusting each other and start trying to get one over on each other instead of lifting each other up. Catherine ties it together with research from a guest on her other show who built a questionnaire around happiness and toured the US asking people one key question: what meaningful community are you part of where you feel you genuinely contribute and are served in return. The people who had a real answer to that question were measurably happier than those who didn’t.

#42 What Wisdom Comes With Age
Season 1, Episode 42
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask what wisdom actually comes with age, a question Catherine admits made her burst out laughing before they even started. Roy’s answer comes straight from his own financial history: since the losses he’s talked about before, he hasn’t touched a credit card or borrowed money, because living on assumptions (that a sale will close, that money owed will arrive) doesn’t match reality. He finds that paying with physical cash, where you watch the money actually leave your wallet, keeps you honest in a way a card, even a debit card, doesn’t. He also flags a smaller but related lesson, paying close attention to recurring charges, since companies (he mentions Podbean specifically) have tried billing him incorrectly more than once, and catching it only happens if you’re actually checking. Catherine builds on the credit card point with something she learned during lockdown, watching videos on money and the economy, that everyone born in the UK is effectively born into debt because the economy itself runs on debt, on top of whatever personal mortgages or loans people carry. She thinks this explains the UK’s distorted relationship with money, including the belief that the government “owes” people money when in reality all government money originally came from taxpayers. Since going debt-free herself, she says it’s changed her psychology and her ability to just enjoy life, and made her more aware of how much energy that invisible, background debt drains from people who’ve simply never questioned it. She then gets to what actually made her laugh at the topic: her real wisdom gained with age is realizing that almost everything we think of as wisdom is nonsense, that we understand only a tiny fraction of how life, love, psychology or the universe actually work, and that accepting this is freeing rather than discouraging, since it makes life more surprising instead of something to keep chasing answers for. She tells a story about once asking a spiritual teacher for guidance on her life, only for him to tell her that hanging her duvet over the banister for a while would really help it fluff up, a deliberately unhelpful-sounding answer she later realized was exactly right, because what she was really asking for wasn’t something anyone else could give her. Roy closes with his own version of the same idea: the more he knows, the more he realizes he doesn’t know.

#41 Finding Calm in Chaos
Season 1, Episode 41
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask how you actually find calm inside chaos. Catherine draws on her long practice with Five Rhythms Dance, a freestyle movement meditation whose third rhythm is literally called Chaos. In that rhythm you let go completely, letting your body move however your emotions and energy dictate, however bizarre or erratic that looks, and what she’s found, over and over, is that fully surrendering into it eventually reveals a calm, settled center right in the middle of her, as if anxiety, confusion and overwhelm simply burn off. That calm is what tips the practice into the next rhythm, called lyrical. She argues the same surrender works with chaos in daily life, not just movement, comparing it to an artist’s studio mid-creation, paint and materials everywhere, chaos on the surface, but something solid and real forming at the center of it. She also shares a simple reset technique for when she needs a break from chaos rather than surrendering into it: lying flat on her back upstairs, arms out, palms up, legs slightly apart, eyes closed, breathing deeply for five minutes while letting thoughts buzz without engaging them, after which she feels like a different person, sometimes joined by one of her cats settling in next to her. Roy connects this to watching his late father spiral into panic over something as simple as making toast and tea, in contrast to hosting an entire extended-family Christmas dinner himself without stress, staying fully in his zone while his mother asked how he was so calm. He extends the idea to business and dating, where getting overwhelmed by too much happening at once is common, and his fix is the same: step away, go for a walk to clear your head without turning it into another task, or take a weekend or full week away even when it feels impossible, because that distance from the chaos is often exactly what produces the creative solution. Catherine closes by noting that most people either avoid chaos entirely or become addicted to it, and neither extreme serves anyone well.

#40 Hope as a Discipline
Season 1, Episode 40
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine mark the show’s 40th episode milestone by asking how you actually nurture hope. Roy’s take is blunt: hope on its own isn’t a strategy. He breaks everything down into tasks and systems instead, using his own podcasting journey as the example, the first episode took forever to edit, cutting pauses and filler, re-listening, re-uploading, and improving each time, and now he’s running ten shows including this one. For him, discipline and systems are what actually produce results, not hoping health, money or success will just work out. Catherine agrees Roy’s disciplined, but pushes back gently, pointing out that he also carries a genuinely hopeful attitude, an underlying expectation that things can work, rather than the fatalistic mindset some people carry into everything they do. She argues hope as a discipline is really about practicing an attitude of possibility alongside the actual work, not instead of it. She shares advice she once received about marketing: if you’re sitting down to create promotional content while convinced it won’t work or feeling terrified, stop, go for a walk, take a bath, play with the cats, watch bad TV, anything else, and only come back to it once you’re in a mindset of offering something valuable rather than manipulating or stealing someone’s time. For her, hope as a discipline means practicing the ability to notice wonder and possibility instead of defaulting to doom and gloom, and when those doom-and-gloom moments hit, being able to notice them, laugh, and come back to center. Roy closes simply by saying how much he’s enjoyed all 40 episodes with Catherine, and Catherine reflects that starting this show at all, despite already running nine others, was itself a hopeful decision rather than an excuse not to.

#39 Small Acts of Courage
Season 1, Episode 39
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask: where can you be brave today? Catherine admits the question first strikes her as odd since there’s no obvious threat in her day, just work at home, but she identifies several real forms of small courage. One is being truthful and genuinely feeling what she shares in promotional video clips rather than performing something she thinks people will like, and she says she can tell the difference between creators who are doing that and ones who are just presenting, versus the opposite extreme of people manufacturing drama to look brave rather than being brave. Other forms of courage she names: ending a relationship that needs ending, telling someone an uncomfortable truth, dropping a habit, or doing a screen fast, something she compares to coming off sugar years ago, since both remove an artificial comfort and force you to face how drained you actually are underneath it. She ties this back to trust, noting that the most courageous people she knows are also the most present, transparent and agenda-free, which is exactly what makes them trustworthy. Roy connects this to his father, a chief projectionist at an Irish cinema who refused to back down as the workers’ union spokesman even while everyone else folded under pressure from management, only for Roy to later learn the union reps were quietly having dinner with the cinema owners they were supposedly fighting. Roy also mentions self-publishing a book years ago that ten people warned him he’d get “whacked” for, with one reader instead calling him the “warrior of love,” a title he now keeps on his Facebook page. He then shares several Covid-era stories of refusing to comply: being confronted by police over a mask in a supermarket and walking away after asking “are you talking to me?”, teaching his son not to fall for what he calls pandemic theatre, questioning the contradiction of people tapping shared touchscreens to order food then eating with their hands while supposedly terrified of contamination, and shouting at judges and detectives in court when he felt they were acting corruptly or trying to trap him with paperwork, watching them back down once confronted. For Roy, none of that was really about being brave, it was about standing in his own sovereignty and not being intimidated by a uniform, a title, or a piece of paper.

#38 Fear as a Teacher
Season 1, Episode 38
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine dig into fear as a teacher. Roy approaches it two ways: first, following on from the last episode, the fear around what was being pushed on people during Covid, where the lesson was recognising it was orchestrated and understanding the dangers of what people were being told to take. Second, the fear instilled by abusive schoolteachers, something he’s seen damage people for years, especially through his speaking podcast, where guests trace a lifelong fear of public speaking back to being humiliated by an authority figure as a child, though facing that fear later can also become its own lesson in what you’re actually capable of. Catherine shares a story about a friend at an expensive private school whose dance teacher called her clumsy in front of the class and sentenced her to play piano while everyone else danced, leaving her unable to dance sober for the rest of her life, despite being a genuinely good dancer. She connects this to the broader British culture of mockery disguised as humour, where cruelty gets excused as “just joking” and the person hurt gets labelled thin-skinned, creating a fear of being vulnerable that damages relationships and courage long-term. She contrasts that with a singer-songwriter guest raised in a creative household with no fear-based pressure to play it safe, who chose to write songs about joy rather than pain purely because that’s what he believed in, and who she sees as living proof of what happens without fear driving the decisions. Catherine also reveals she had no fear of Covid itself, having grown up in a natural-health, unvaccinated household, except for one specific 24-hour window of absolute terror that she came to understand wasn’t her own fear, but the collective fear of everyone else, a lesson in empathy she needed to go through. Roy then shares his own schoolteacher story: a history teacher who made the class memorise endless pages, screamed at students, and told 13-year-old Roy in front of 30 classmates that his dead grandmother could do better after he scored 17%, only for Roy to get a different teacher three years later and score 100% and a top state exam grade. He later found out at a reunion that this same teacher told another student he’d amount to nothing, a student who went on to struggle badly with drugs, and takes from it that parents need to pay close attention to what teachers are actually saying to their kids and act fast if something’s wrong. Catherine closes on the point that past damage from being terrorised by someone, whether a teacher or anyone else, doesn’t have to be carried forward forever, confronting it and refusing to let it happen again now is part of how that old wound actually heals.

#37 Resilience in Uncertain Times
Season 1, Episode 37
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine take on resilience in uncertain times and how to recover. Catherine starts by questioning the premise, pointing out that life itself is inherently uncertain since she’s an organic being, not a machine, and that when people talk about “uncertain times” they usually mean something external, like not knowing when a war will end. Her view is that the goal isn’t to recover from uncertainty, it’s to live inside it fully and feel it, because she believes uncertainty exists to help us grow, and chasing certainty misses the point. She ties this to her own experience during the UK’s roughly three-year Covid lockdown period, when she felt constantly drained by the collective energy of it and had to adapt by limiting herself to four or five hours of work a day and sleeping nine or ten hours a night just to stay functional, rather than sliding into resentment, fear and panic. For her, resilience means tuning into both the meaning of the uncertainty and what her body actually needs, rest, more protein, whatever it is, rather than reaching for a single fixed answer. Roy connects this to his own experience losing everything financially and rebuilding from a place of sovereignty, and to the roughly four years of lockdowns, during which he refused to comply, started independently researching PCR test sales data going back to 2017, and dug into what was being injected, while staying on good terms with friends who believed the opposite, since he never saw it as worth ending relationships over differing belief systems. He applies the same approach to business shocks, like losing ad platform access in Europe overnight, the lesson being to adjust fast without self-pity, stay calm instead of panicking, since panic (which he sees media and official messaging as pushing) clouds thinking, and basic tools like breathing and walking are what actually let you recover from whatever curveball comes next.

#36 Legacy Over Achievement
Season 1, Episode 36
Show notes
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask the question: what legacy are you creating? Roy says his legacy isn’t about being remembered, a statue or a vote of thanks, it’s about leaving the world better than he found it for every generation’s children, not just his own, and knowing in himself that he spent his life trying to improve things. Catherine frames it through consciousness: she judges her life and work by whether, on balance, it’s helpful to the world, and believes the quality of her own consciousness shapes both her immediate contribution and her long-term legacy. She shares a story about a former client, once a corporate troubleshooter sent in to whip teams into shape, who’s now retired in a small village and joined the local council out of frustration with how it was run. Using the subtler, more energy-based approach he picked up from their work together years ago, he’s quietly transformed the council’s culture, including getting a dark skies initiative implemented, without anyone realizing what he’s actually doing. For Catherine, that ripple effect, everyone she’s helped going on to help others, is the real legacy, worth more to her than any fee she earned along the way. Roy jokes about franchising that kind of mentoring city by city, and Catherine mentions hearing that roughly 20 percent of humanity is now said to be operating at a more conscious, heart-led level, which tracks with what she’s seeing play out directly.
