DBWS 3-3 Dusk At Cubist Castle Round Table Discussion
Episode 36
Show notes
DBWS 3-3 Dusk At Cubist Castle Round Table Discussion
Released in 1996, Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle felt like discovering a transmission from another world: Beatlesque melodies colliding with tape loops, psychedelic noise, field recordings, beautiful harmonies, and songs that could somehow feel both completely familiar and totally alien.
Three decades later, we’re still wandering around inside that castle.
Today on Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts, we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dusk at Cubist Castle with a special roundtable discussion featuring Matt LeMay, who famously reviewed the record for Pitchfork; illustrator and writer Mark Neeley who recently did a 30 year retrospective on Dusk on Aquarium Drunkard; and DTS radio DJ and longtime Elephant 6 champion Tati Arbelaez.
We’re going to talk about how we each discovered this record, the songs and sounds that continue to reveal themselves after all these years, the world surrounding Elephant 6 in the 1990s, and why Dusk at Cubist Castle still feels less like an album you simply listen to—and more like a place you enter. So put on your headphones, turn the lights down, and come inside.
This is 30 years of Dusk at Cubist Castle.

Episode 33
Show notes
DBWS - 2-33 - PYLON REENACTMENT SOCIETY
We’re reaching back into the vault for another classic episode of Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts — and this one is an absolute blast.
We’re joined by the entire Pylon Reenactment Society for a conversation about carrying forward the legacy of Pylon, one of the most incredible, influential, and downright singular bands to ever emerge from the legendary Athens, Georgia music scene.
We talk about what it means to honor that music while creating something that stands on its own, the formation and evolution of Pylon Reenactment Society, their extensive touring, the records they’ve released, and what it’s been like bringing these songs to audiences around the world. https://patreon.com/dontbotherwearingseatbelts?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan&utm_content=copyLink

Episode 30
Show notes
DBWS - 2-30 Fear Of Fear with Ben Crum of Great Lakes
On this episode, we sit down with Ben Crum of Great Lakes to talk about the band’s beautiful and deeply personal new record, Fear of the Fear.
A semi-concept album inspired by the loss of a close friend, Fear of the Fear explores grief, memory, friendship, and all the complicated emotions that come with losing someone important. Interestingly, the album was actually recorded before Great Lakes’ last record Don't Swim To Close, making its long-awaited arrival feel even more special.
This episode has some really amazing E6 stories including some fun ones about the great Belle and Sebastian and Alex Chilton of Big Star.

Mike takes us inside the making of the comp—the bands, the friendships, the discoveries, the stories behind the songs, and what it was like building a label around a community of musicians who were creating some of the most exciting music happening anywhere.
And, of course, we’re listening along the way.
This episode features music from of Montreal, Elf Power, The Masters of the Hemisphere, The Minders, Marshmallow Coast, and more as Mike gives us the stories behind the artists and songs that helped make HHBTM Vol. 1 such a special snapshot of its time.
It’s part oral history, part mixtape, and a full-on celebration of the beautiful interconnected world of independent music.
So put on your headphones, dig through the record collection, and join us for another deep dive into the wonderfully weird world of Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records.
Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts — Episode 2-29: Happy Happy Birthday To Me with Mike Turner, Part Two.
Speaking of, Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts also has a Patreon!!! Wait! Come back! It’s not like that! Our show is free, and will remain that way. However! Joining the Patreon, and pledging at the Reckless Driver level ($1 monthly) allows you to participate in our monthly giveaways. There will always be at least one giveaway per month, often there will be two or more per month, and each giveaway will include at least one piece of physical media (cd, cassette, or vinyl record.) There will be times that the winner can choose the format of the media that they receive, but as long as the album was pressed on vinyl there will always be that option available for the winner (we’re vinyl fanatics here at DBWS.) Sometimes it could be just the album in question, and other times there will be quite a few things included (t-shirts, stickers, artwork, etc..) We aren’t looking to turn a profit off of your donations, but they will definitely help us handle the shipping costs for the prizes, and various other production costs.

DBWS 2-25 - Happy Happy Birthday To Me With Mike Turner
Episode 25
Show notes
PLEASE READ BEFORE LISTENING • This episode contains frank discussions of autism. You will actually hear us talking about cutting the entire section before it airs. However, we, along with Mike, decided that the conversation was extremely interesting, inspiring, and important to the story being told.
On this special episode, we're joined by one of the most influential and creative figures connected to the Elephant 6 universe: Michael Turner.
As the founder of Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records, Michael has championed countless Elephant 6 artists and helped introduce an incredible wave of independent music to the world. He's also the driving force behind the legendary Athens Popfest, where so many unforgettable Elephant 6 performances and reunions have taken place over the years.
In this epic two-part conversation, Michael takes us behind the scenes of Happy Happy Birthday to Me, shares stories from the early days of the label, reflects on the Athens music community, and offers a fascinating look at the artists, friendships, and moments that helped shape one of indie rock's most beloved musical collectives.

DBWS 2-24 Elf Power Vainly Clurching with Andrew Reiger
Here's another season one episode freed from behind the paywall. This episode marked the official start of Patrick Tape Fleming' as a co-host. We kinda forgot to tell Andrew Reiger about it ahead of time.
But no biggie...
They actually know each other and are fans of each other's musical work.
We mostly discuss Elf Power's lo-fi 1995 masterpiece of a debut release "Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs", but, per usual, the conversation wanders. Whether you are familiar with Andrew's work or not, prepare to be edumacated and enraptured by the magic of Elf Power!

DBWS 2-23: The Sunshine Fix — Age of the Sun
Episode 23
Show notes
DBWS 2-23: The Sunshine Fix — Age of the Sun
As the 1990s came to a close, the Elephant 6 universe entered one of its most fascinating and creative chapters.
The Olivia Tremor Control — the Athens, Georgia kaleidoscopic psychedelic pop machine that helped define an era .. had drifted into different corners of time and space. Its two visionary songwriters began exploring new worlds: Will Cullen Hart traveled deeper into the dreamlike experimental galaxies of Circulatory System, while Bill Doss chased the eternal glow of the perfect pop song with The Sunshine Fix.
And with Age of the Sun, Bill created his post OTC masterpiece.
Filled with Byrds-like harmonies, sun-drenched melodies, 1960s psychedelic color, a little 70's funk and the beautiful layered orchestration we'd come to know from OTC, Age of the Sun feels like a transmission from another dimension.. completely powered by Bill’s unmistakable optimism, his worldly lyrics, and melodic genius
On this episode we talk with Sunshine Fix members Derek Almstead and Kevin Sweeney about what it was like working alongside Bill Doss — not just as a songwriter, but as a friend, producer, and bandleader.
They share stories of Bill’s kindness, his endless encouragement, his belief in the people around him, and the way he created space for every musician to bring their own personality into the music.
Much like Paul McCartney building Wings after that “other little band he was in” Bill wasn’t looking for hired hands. He was building a BAND.
This is a conversation about friendship, collaboration, creativity, and the magic that happens when a great songwriter trusts the people around him. https://patreon.com/dontbotherwearingseatbelts?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan&utm_content=copyLink

DBWS 2-22 Azalia Snail
Episode 22
Show notes
DBWS 2-22 Azalia Snail
We are honored to be joined by the one and only Azalia Snail — the legendary “Queen of Lo-Fi.” A true pioneer of the 1990s underground, Azalia helped shape the sound of home recording, neo-psychedelia, experimental pop, and the DIY universe that so many artists continue to explore today.
She is a songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist, a sonic explorer — and someone whose life story almost feels like the indie rock version of Forrest Gump. Somehow, someway, Azalia has crossed paths with everyone from Beck during the explosion of the lo-fi movement to the legendary Dick Van Dyke — collecting stories that sound too magical to be real.
In this episode, we talk about her incredible journey, the freedom of making art without rules, and her brand new album coming out on Cloud Recordings — a perfect home for an artist who has always lived in the clouds, creating her own universe one song at a time.
So sit back, open your mind, and enjoy our conversation with the endlessly fascinating Azalia Snail.

Show notes
DBWS Episode 20: Of Montreal with Andy Gonzales
In this episode of Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts, we sit down with former Of Montreal member Andy Gonzales to dive deep into Of Montreal’s beloved Elephant 6 classic, Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse.
Andy takes us behind the scenes of the album’s creation, sharing incredible stories about recording the entire project on tape, the experimental spirit surrounding the sessions, and the bizarre, beautiful world of the album’s many invented characters. We talk about the record’s constant musical zig zags, its fearless creativity, and why Coquelicot remains one of the most adventurous and unique albums to come out of the Elephant 6 universe.
We also learn the hilarious story of how Andy first joined Of Montreal, along with reflections on the collaborative magic of that era and what made those recordings feel so alive and unpredictable.
If you love Elephant 6, psychedelic pop, strange storytelling, or hearing how truly inventive records get made, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Andy also dives into his band Marshmallow Coast, and being a former member of The Music Tapes.

DBWS 2-17 Devine and Devine and Rishis
Episode 17
Show notes
DBWS 2-17 Devine and Devine and Rishis
In this one, we’re diving into two mini classic episodes from our first season that still feel as alive and necessary now as they did then. First up is Chris McKay’s Devine and Devine — a record born out of the kind of circumstance that reshapes everything. Faced with his own mortality, Chris didn’t just write songs, he tore up the rulebook and created in a way that feels raw, immediate, and a little bit confrontational. It’s intimate in a way that might make you uncomfortable at times, but that’s the point. You can hear the weight of it, but also the clarity. It’s not just an album, it’s a document of someone pushing through, finding a way to make something beautiful while staring down the hardest truth there is.
From there, we reconnect with several members of The Rishis, where the conversation keeps circling back to one thing above all else: community. Not just the idea of it, but the lived-in, built-over-time kind that has always defined the Elephant 6 Collective. There’s a real emphasis on showing up for each other, sharing ideas freely, and creating in a way that feels connected rather than isolated. Coming out of the pandemic, that sense of togetherness feels even more intentional — like the music isn’t just about new records, but about keeping the spirit of collaboration and friendship alive, no matter what the world throws at it.
Per usual, we try to stick to the records… but you know how that goes. Conversations drift, stories unfold, and before long we’re deep in the weeds talking about creativity, community, and why this whole weird, wonderful scene still matters so much.
This one goes deep.
