The Duke Blue Devils opened the season with a 84-50 win over Army, and we’re here to talk about it on Episode 868!

Duke wasn’t perfect, but a 12-0 kill shot to start the game set the tempo and Duke was able to open the season with a win. We discuss the game, featuring some great headlines and discussing all the good from this game. The defense was the story, and we discuss some individuals who played well. We also get into what we can work on from this game as we turn it around in two more days for a game against Coastal Carolina. Finally, we discuss some fantastic plays that made our Play of the Game. We also quickly discuss a few other games of note that took place on Monday night.

Jason and Donald dive into the opening game of the season for the Duke Blue Devils. Duke plays Army in a rematch from a year ago. Last season, Duke put up 114 points in an absolute beatdown. We’re back with a new DBR Bites as some news came up on a Thursday that we had to discuss!

First, Brock Davis was a late addition to the Duke Men’s Basketball roster in March, helping the team prepare for games during the ACC and NCAA tournaments. He was added to the roster officially for this season. But in the midst of prepping for our Stats Game, Jason discovered that Brock was no longer with the program. We discuss his decision to put his studies before sports and leave the program to focus on his academics. We commend Brock for putting his studies first.

We then get into some schedule news for next season, as Duke is slated to play in the Basketball Hall of Fame Series against Arizona in November 2027. That game will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the home of the Raiders that will be the host of the 2028 Final Four. Once again, Jon Scheyer has accepted all of the smoke and he’s also continuing a couple of trends in playing in Vegas and playing in a city that he hopes the team will return to in April to play for a national title.

Duke Men’s Basketball was able to get a victory on the road in world famous Phog Allen Fieldhouse, and Duke Football got the win in Charlottesville over the weekend. We recap both wins on Episode 864!

We begin with the basketball, as Duke closed out the preseason with a tough win over the Jayhawks. We’re excited about how the guys were able to battle through the test and get the win, but there are also some lessons to be learned. Big Pat was amazing on the day and we saw the return of Caleb Foster to the floor. We also discuss the fact that the freshmen played like freshmen, but this experience will help them as the season begins in just over a week.

We then shift to the football in what was a wild victory over Virginia. Duke overcame several obstacles, including a Walker Eget injury, a missed extra point, and struggles moving the football on offense. But they got the win thanks to Nate Sheppard throwing a TD and then the defense sealing the game with an interception. We discuss all the wildness that leads to Duke moving to 5-2 on the season.

The Blue Devils venture to perhaps the second best arena in all of college basketball on Sunday with a trip to Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. The Duke Basketball Roundup has a look at everything you need to know about the Jayhawks, starting with the fact that this is a team built on court injunctions plus a heck of a freshman superstar. If you aren't interested in the matchup between Tyran Stokes and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, then you are not a basketball fan!

After the break, Jason and Donald also look ahead to a huge game for Duke football against Virginia. The Cavs had high hopes coming into the season but things have not gone as they expected. Ten months after they faced each other for the ACC Title, it feels like Duke and Virginia are now in an elimination game... the loser probably has no shot at getting back to the ACC Championship.

Well, that was fun! Duke absolutely destroys Tennessee 103-64 in their second preseason contest, and we have to discuss it on Episode 862!

The ACC preseason polls and awards are out, and Duke is expected to be #1 in the conference. On top of that, several players earned nods for All-ACC teams and awards. Donald and Jason discuss how Duke stacks up against the rest of the ACC and who the writers think are the players that will stand out this season. Recording just a couple hours after the game ended, Jason and Donald talk about how well Duke played on both ends of the floor, from the individual standouts to the team defense. A 39-point blowout of the preseason #8 team? Everything was coming up Duke Blue as the Volunteers got rocked! It wasn’t a perfect game despite the score. We also discuss what we can work on as we progress through the preseason.

We also get into the AP preseason polls for both men’s and women’s basketball. Both teams are ranked very high in the polls, and both have a loaded schedule, including non-conference games against most of the top 10. Both Scheyer and Lawson said they will take all the smoke that they can handle, and then some!

As a reward for a very successful fundraising effort at the Duke Dribble for Victory over cancer, The Duke Basketball Roundup was invited to send someone to see a Duke basketball practice this week. Jason and Donald could not make it, so they sent their buddy Carl Heimel (of The Vector) instead. On the latest edition of the DBR Podcast, Carl gives us his impressions from the practice. He reveals a surprising "white team" of presumed starters and talks about how a John Scheyer practice looks like something out of the future. There is tons of insight here you won't want to miss!

The Devils went down to Georgia and came away with a frustrating loss on the football field. We have gotten our first look at the 26-27 Blue Devils playing against someone other than themselves... and it was pretty fun. Duke ran away from a game Belmont team, winning by 40 points and topping the 100-point threshold. The DBR Podcast crew, Jason and Donald, break down everything they saw in the scrimmage. Duke's depth was on full display and it was impressive how little dropoff there was as Duke moved further and further into the rotation. Duke Basketball is ready to get their preseason in full effect with a scrimmage against Belmont, and Duke Football gets back to action with a trip to face Georgia Tech. We preview both on Episode 855.

Duke Basketball welcomes Evan Bradds back to town as the Bruins come to tango with Duke in a scrimmage. It won’t be like a regular game or even an exhibition, and we discuss what the Bruins bring to the table and how the night might be a bit different than what we’re used to.

We then shift to football, where Duke tries to go 1-0 this week when they head to Atlanta to face the Yellow Jackets. We discuss the down year Georgia Tech has had thus far, but that shouldn’t stop Duke from bringing the chip on their shoulder that has fueled them so far this season.

Countdown to Craziness was fantastic! We recap the great weekend as Duke Basketball’s preseason kicks off with Episode 854.

The weekend was terrific, but the centerpiece was the action on Coach K Court as both the men’s and women’s team played in intrasquad scrimmages. On this edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup we have the very difficult task of talking about the passing of Chris Spatola, Coach K's son-in-law and someone who had a profound impact on the Duke program. After serving our nation in the military, Chris coached when Jon Scheyer was at Duke and then became a familiar voice on ESPN broadcasts. This is a hard day for the Duke community. Before dealing with the news about Chris, the DBR Podcast crew spends some time previewing the football contest with William and Mary. Though the oddsmakerssay this one is not going to be a competitive contest, every opponent deservesrespect and there are still things the Duke team needs to work on as it seeks toget to 4-0 on the season.
