Is Your Skincare Backed by Science or TikTok? ft. Ron Robinson
Episode 19
Show notes
Exosomes, beef tallow, salmon sperm - the beauty industry has a new miracle ingredient every other Tuesday.
And, the marketing is fabulous, but the science is nowhere to be seen.
In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Ron Robinson, cosmetic chemist, Founder and CEO of BeautyStat Cosmetics, and founding cosmetic chemist behind Hailey Bieber's Rhode, to discuss what actually makes skincare effective. From a fascinating breakdown of Vitamin C (and why it may be failing you) and why melanin-rich skin requires careful management of inflammation to the importance of clinical evidence in skincare, Rob and Elaine cover it all.
What You'll Learn:
• How Ron went from medical school dropout to cosmetic chemist and beauty entrepreneur
• Why pure L-ascorbic acid is notoriously difficult to stabilize
• How BeautyStat's encapsulation technology helps protect its 20% vitamin C formula
• Why melanin-rich skin requires particular care around inflammation and hyperpigmentation
• How vitamin C supports antioxidant protection, collagen production, and more even-looking skin
• Why Ron remains skeptical of the claims surrounding exosomes, beef tallow, and other viral ingredients
• Why skin barrier repair deserves priority over aggressive exfoliation
• Why Ron prefers a small, intentional product line instead of launching endless SKUs
• Why Ron believes expertise and education will help define the next era of beautyThis conversation proves that a skincare ingredient can only be labelled effective if the formulation, evidence, and client's actual skin needs come through. Not just because the internet said so.
About Ron:
Ron Robinson is a cosmetic chemist and the Founder and CEO of BeautyStat Cosmetics, a skincare company focused on science-backed formulations and product innovation. With more than 35 years of beauty industry experience, Ron has worked with leading brands including Clinique, Estée Lauder, Revlon, Avon, and L'Oréal. Most recently, he served as the founding cosmetic chemist behind Hailey Bieber's Rhode.
After years of researching and formulating ways to stabilize pure L-ascorbic acid, Ron developed BeautyStat's Universal C Skin Refiner, a 20% vitamin C product designed to address the ingredient's notorious instability.
Through his work as a formulator, entrepreneur, and skincare educator, Ron advocates for ingredient transparency, clinical evidence, and products developed around genuine skin needs rather than marketing trends.

06:41 The Vitamin C Problem Ron Spent Years Solving
Pure L-ascorbic acid has strong research behind its skincare benefits, but keeping it stable is notoriously difficult. Ron explains how vitamin C can oxidize, discolor, and develop that infamous smell he compares to hot dog water. His answer was to develop an encapsulation system for BeautyStat's Universal C Skin Refiner, protecting its 20% pure vitamin C until application. His formulation story shows why the percentage printed on the packaging tells you very little without understanding what happens to the ingredient inside the bottle.
11:56 Melanin-Rich Skin Needs Finesse, Not Fear
Ron explains why inflammation deserves particular attention when treating deeper skin tones. Irritation can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, creating the very dark spots a client is trying to address. The goal isn't avoiding exfoliation, collagen-supporting ingredients, or effective treatments. It's delivering results while managing irritation. For estheticians, the lesson is to understand skin response rather than automatically equating aggressive treatment with better results.
18:27 Viral Ingredients Need Clinical Evidence
Exosomes, beef tallow, and salmon sperm may be enjoying their moment in beauty marketing, but Ron isn't rushing to crown them skincare royalty. He questions whether exosome products have demonstrated advantages over existing ingredients and challenges the sunscreen and anti-aging claims being made about beef tallow. His point isn't that every emerging ingredient should be dismissed. It's that claims need evidence. A dramatic before-and-after video does not settle the science.
40:10 Three Questions Before You Buy Another Serum
Ron offers a simple checklist for evaluating skincare products. First, look for independent clinical testing. Second, read reviews from people who have actually purchased and used the product. Third, try a sample to understand the texture and experience. It's not an elaborate research framework, but it forces consumers and professionals to move beyond packaging, influencer endorsements, and the latest ingredient obsession. Before recommending something, establish whether there's a credible reason to believe it works.Esthetician Unlocked is handcrafted by our friends over at: https://www.fame.so/

The Business Skills Estheticians Were Never Taught ft. Jazmyne Mims
Episode 18
Show notes
The aesthetics industry loves a certificate. But a certification doesn’t automatically make someone good at business.
That’s the reality Jazmyne Mims wants every esthetician to live in.
In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Jazmyne for a candid conversation about the skills that actually separate professionals who grow from professionals who stay stuck: sales confidence, business judgment, staff boundaries, emotional intelligence, device education, and the ability to tune out the noise without getting distracted by every shiny thing in the market.
What You'll Learn:
• Why sales is one of the biggest missing skills in esthetics education
• How to sell products by teaching, not pressuring
• Why owning a business does not automatically mean having business acumen
• How Jazmyne spots the difference between surviving and scaling
• Why being too friendly with staff can weaken your authority
• How upbringing and personal wiring show up in workplace behavior
• Why “reading the room” is a business skill
• How HydraFacial is evolving its brand in a crowded device market
• Why the future of aesthetics includes educating new estheticians early
• Why quality-driven brands do not have to chase discountsBeing good with skin is not enough. If you want to build something that lasts, you need to understand the client, the business, the team, and the tools.
About Jazmyne:
Jazmyne Mims is a Business Development Manager with extensive experience across 165+ accounts in Georgia’s aesthetic and service industries.
Her work allows her direct insight into what separates businesses that are simply operating from businesses that are actually growing.
With practical know-how across sales, client education, staff dynamics, device conversations, business operations, and leadership behavior, Jazmyne brings a grounded perspective on what beauty professionals need beyond technical skill.

02:30 Innovation, Grit and Staying Ahead
Jazmyne reflects on Elaine’s continued commitment to education, growth and innovation, even after building one of Georgia’s top esthetician schools. The larger point is that real leaders do not stop learning once they become successful. They stay in rooms where they can grow, stay curious about the industry, and keep raising the standard instead of assuming they have already arrived.
04:30 Business Ownership Is Not Business Acumen
This is one of Jazmyne’s sharpest points: everyone who owns a business does not automatically have business acumen. Some people jumped, believed in themselves, and managed to sustain something. That matters, but sustaining is not the same as scaling. Jazmyne has seen owners who are keeping the lights on without learning the procedures, strategy, and decision-making skills needed to actually grow. It is a reality check for anyone confusing survival with strong business leadership.
06:00 The Catch-22 of Being a Woman in Business
Jazmyne talks about the fine line women leaders often have to walk. Be too cold, and you are judged. Be too warm, and people may stop respecting your authority. She has seen that leaders who are overly “lovey” with staff can keep their teams, but struggle to propel the business because boundaries get blurry. Her message is not to become harsh. It is to be personable, but firm enough that people understand there are standards.
08:00 How Upbringing Shapes Workplace Behavior
Jazmyne gets personal about how her mother’s work as a therapist shaped the way she reads rooms and pays attention to people. She also makes a wider leadership point: people bring their lives into the workplace. Some employees may expect hand-holding because that is what they are used to. Others may carry intense work ethic because of how they were raised. Understanding those patterns helps leaders manage people more intelligently instead of reacting to every behavior at surface level.
11:30 Why HydraFacial Doesn’t Discount Like Everyone Else
The conversation moves into quality, price, and brand value. Jazmyne compares strong brands to luxury: if there is true efficacy and quality behind the product, constant discounting does not have to be the strategy. For HydraFacial, the focus is not racing competitors to the bottom. It is continuing to build on clinical data, innovation, partnerships, and education while staying clear on what the brand actually stands for.

Stop Running Your Spa Business by Memory ft. Daniela Woerner
Episode 17
Show notes
The beauty industry loves a bit of front-end sparkle: the perfect Instagram, an aesthetic treatment room and the dreamy brand photos. But behind the scenes? A lot of businesses are being held together by memory, sticky notes, panic and the same five client questions being answered manually for the 900th time.
Daniela Woerner wants spa owners to stop living like that. In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Daniela, Founder and CEO of Addo Aesthetics, for a conversation about AI, systems, operations, client touchpoints and why the “unsexy” parts of business are often the parts that decide whether you scale or burn out.
What You'll Learn:
• Why spa owners should build their business like they may sell it one day
• Why running a business “from memory” is a hidden risk
• What an AI employee actually is
• How AI can take repetitive tasks off the owner’s plate
• Why client touchpoints should not be handled manually forever
• How automated follow-ups can bring back clients who have gone quiet
• Why systems protect human connection instead of replacing it
• Why the unsexy operational work burns out entrepreneurs
• How to spot the difference between a marketing problem and an operations problem
• How to stop being the bottleneck in your own beauty businessStop confusing chaos with commitment because your clients need your presence, not your burnout.
About Daniela:
Daniela Woerner is the Founder and CEO of Addo Aesthetics, a company helping spa, salon, and med spa owners streamline operations, implement AI systems and build businesses that can scale without losing the personal touch.
Her work focuses on one of the biggest blind spots in the beauty industry: talented owners running serious businesses entirely from their own heads. She helps beauty entrepreneurs move from chaos to structure by documenting processes, automating repetitive tasks, improving client touchpoints and using AI as practical support rather than shiny tech for the sake of it.
Daniela is also the host of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast, where she shares business and marketing insights for owners who want more clarity, better systems, and less day-to-day overwhelm.

05:40 Your Memory Cannot Run Your Business
Daniela points out that too many spa owners are running serious businesses entirely from memory. Every pricing decision, client preference, scheduling exception, rebooking process and internal rule lives in the owner’s head. That might feel like control, but it is actually a major business risk. If the owner gets sick, goes on vacation, or burns out, the whole thing becomes fragile. The first move is simple: get the process out of your head and into a system.
09:15 Your Real Revenue Driver is a Secret
Daniela shares the example of a business owner who saw herself as an acne specialist, but when they looked at the numbers, brows were actually where the business was strongest. That is the kind of wake-up call many beauty owners need. Passion matters, but data tells the truth. If your brand story does not match where the money is coming from, you may be underbuilding the exact service that could grow the business.
12:50 Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should
Elaine and Daniela dig into the entrepreneur trap: every time you get a little success, people start throwing new ideas at you. Add this service. Launch this product. Try this offer. Say yes to this partnership. The problem is that beauty entrepreneurs are often capable of doing many things, which makes the noise even more dangerous. Daniela’s filter is clear: if it pulls you away from your core business and bread and butter, it may not be worth it.
16:20 What an AI Employee Really Means
Daniela makes an important distinction: an AI employee is not just asking ChatGPT for help. In her world, it is a project or system built with custom instructions, specific trained skills, and automation that handles a task from start to finish. If you still have to sit in front of it the whole time, it may be useful, but it has not fully taken work off your plate yet. For smaller practices that cannot always hire another person, this matters.
23:10 The Instagram Illusion
Daniela calls out the dirty little secret of small business: something can look wildly successful online and still be messy behind the scenes. A beautiful feed does not mean strong systems. A booked calendar does not mean the owner is not drowning. Many business owners focus so hard on the front-end client experience that they neglect the back-end operations. Eventually, the chaos catches up.
31:00 Systems Protect Human Connection
Daniela’s point is simple: systems do not make your business less personal. They make it possible for you to be more present. If you are buried in admin, manually tracking follow-ups, answering the same questions, and carrying every task in your head, you cannot fully show up for clients. Systems handle the repetitive work so the owner can protect the part clients actually care about: the relationship.

Brushes, Beauty & the Business Behind It All ft. Anisa Telwar Kaicker
Episode 16
Show notes
The beauty industry loves talking about products.
But what about the tools doing the work, like the brush touching the face? That often gets treated like an afterthought. And, Anisa Telwar Kaicker is over it.
In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Anisa, founder and CEO of Anisa International, for a conversation about cosmetic brushes, quality, sustainability, leadership, and building a beauty business that can actually last.
What You'll Learn:
• How Anisa accidentally found her way into cosmetic brushes
• Why synchronicity can matter more than the perfect business plan
• Why not all brushes are created equal
• Why Anisa International’s vertical integration model supports consistency
• Why Anisa prefers collaboration over order-taking with beauty brands
• How her leadership style evolved across decades of building a company
• Why founders need patience when their teams are catching up to the vision
• How philanthropy became a purpose anchor for Anisa
• Why Anisa is letting go of Anisa Beauty to refocus on the core businessThe big lesson: quality is not accidental, leadership is not static and beauty tools deserve way more respect than they usually get.
About Anisa:
Anisa Telwar Kaicker is the Founder and CEO of Anisa International, a female-founded global leader in cosmetic brush design, innovation, and responsible manufacturing.
Since launching the company in 1992, Anisa has built a vertically integrated business that supports some of the world’s leading beauty brands through brush development, manufacturing, quality control, and collaborative design. Her work is rooted in craftsmanship, consistency, ethical production and a deep understanding of how tools shape product performance.
She is also deeply committed to philanthropy, especially animal welfare, and views business as a vehicle for positive ripple effects beyond product.

04:54 Brushes Found Anisa
Anisa says brushes chose her. Her path into the beauty industry was not a perfectly planned founder story. It began with her family’s import-export business, a chance meeting with someone whose family manufactured cosmetic brushes and a willingness to try something new when her original plan fell apart. She worked as a waitress at night and sold brushes during the day. The lesson, according to her, is not “wait for destiny to do the work.” It is that sometimes the right opportunity looks random before it starts making sense.
11:24 Quality Is the Whole Business
When Elaine asks how Anisa works with top beauty brands, Anisa explains that the real answer is consistency. Whether a brush is sold in Japan, China, Atlanta or anywhere else, it needs to perform within a controlled range. Hair fallout, pull force, handle weight, density, shape and application all have to meet the standard. That kind of quality does not happen by accident, and it is also why Anisa International is not the cheapest option. When you promise quality, you have to own the responsibility.12:59 Vertical Integration Is Not Just a Buzzword
Anisa explains her end-to-end business model, including two facilities in China that complete the product and run quality control inspections. But the more interesting part is that she does not see her company as an order-taker. She wants to understand what the brand needs, what product the brush will be used with, and how the tool can help differentiate the brand. In other words, the brush is part of the strategy, not just an accessory.16:24 The Founder Had to Evolve Too
Anisa speaks honestly about her leadership evolution. In the early years, she was directive, intense, and focused on getting things done. Over time, she realized that energy was not always helping her team. As she grew, the team changed with her. She now focuses more on aligning around outcomes rather than dictating every step. It is a very real founder lesson: if the team keeps hitting the same wall, sometimes the wall is your leadership style.24:39 Purpose Is What Gets You Up on the Hard Days
Anisa’s philanthropy work with Lifeline and animal welfare became an anchor for her. She shares that some days, the demands of running a business feel like too much. But knowing the ripple effect her business can have gives her a reason to keep showing up. For Anisa, giving back is not a nice little extra. It is part of what makes the work meaningful. She may not remember every brush she made, but she will remember the impact she helped create.Esthetician Unlocked is handcrafted by our friends over at: https://www.fame.so/

Clean Beauty, Biotech & The Future of Skincare ft. Krupa Koestline
Episode 15
Show notes
The beauty industry has never met a buzzword it did not want to put on a label.
But ingredient name-dropping without real formulation logic is just…name-dropping.
In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Krupa Koestline, award-winning cosmetic chemist and founder of KKT Innovation Labs, for a conversation about what happens when skincare science, brand strategy, and honest ingredient education finally meet.
What You'll Learn:
• How Krupa moved from biotech into cosmetic chemistry
• Why her Estée Lauder internship changed the direction of her career
• Why custom formulation beats off-the-shelf private label
• Why new beauty brands need to define their niche early
• What clean beauty actually means when you remove the fearmongering
• Why long-term environmental impact matters in ingredient choices
• Why inflammation affects melanated skin differently
• When exosomes actually make sense in professional skincare
• Why salmon sperm and snail mucin need more honest conversations
• Why PRP and microneedling still make scientific sense
• Why most great skincare results are built at homeThe big theme: skincare science is not about chasing the loudest trend. It is about knowing what works, when it works, who it works for, and when the marketing needs to calm down.
About Krupa:
Krupa Koestline is an award-winning cosmetic chemist and founder of KKT Innovation Labs, known for her work in clean beauty formulation, biotech-driven skincare innovation and custom product development. With a background in biotech and chemistry, Krupa built her career at the intersection of science and beauty. Her work focuses on helping founders develop bespoke formulations that connect brand vision with biological reality, rather than relying on off-the-shelf private label products.
Krupa has been recognized with the Florence Wall Cosmetic Chemist Award and named one of Beauty Independent’s top product developers. Through KKT Innovation Labs, she has helped shape products rooted in ingredient transparency, skin science, sustainability, and thoughtful formulation.
Episode Resources:
•
Krupa Koestline on LinkedIn
• Capsum kkt Website
• Elaine Sterling on LinkedIn
• Elaine Sterling Institute on LinkedInEpisode Highlights:
09:53 Custom Formulation > Copy-Paste Skincare
Krupa built KKT Innovation Labs around bespoke formulation, not private label. She saw that founders did not need another off-the-shelf product with a different label slapped on it. They needed formulas built around their exact customer, brand vision, skin concern and ingredient philosophy. For Krupa, this blend is how products stop sounding different and start being different.
12:05 Your Product Cannot Be Everything to Everyone
Krupa gives beauty founders the advice many do not want to hear: define your niche early. In a market drowning in exosomes, peptides, biotech buzzwords, and “does-it-all” promises, focus is a competitive advantage. Niche products are doing better because they solve one problem clearly for one person who actually needs it. The brands that try to do everything often end up saying nothing.
16:09 Clean Beauty Without the Panic Button
Krupa does not define clean beauty through fear. For her, it is about being mindful of what goes into a product, how it affects the body short term and long term, and what consequences it may have for the environment. That includes things like biodegradability, aquatic toxicity, soil impact, and ingredients that may be restricted in one region but still allowed elsewhere. Clean beauty, in her view, is not about scaring people. It is about giving them better options.
35:44 Exosomes Are Not Magic Fairy Dust
Krupa explains exosomes in a way that actually makes sense: they are like tiny postcards carrying messages between cells. They can contain proteins, mRNA, peptides, amino acids and signals that help tell cells what to do next. That is why they can be powerful for wound healing. But the important part is context. The postcard has to get where it needs to go. Otherwise, it is just sitting on the porch.
42:00 The 80/20 Rule of Real Skincare Results
Elaine brings up the idea that 80% of results come from what happens at home, and Krupa’s science-driven perspective supports the bigger point. Professional treatments matter, especially microneedling, PRP, peels and post-procedure recovery, but the day-to-day routine is where the skin is constantly being supported or sabotaged. Great skin has to be maintained.

Episode 14
Show notes
The aesthetics industry loves a shiny object and Kathy Walton has seen (and had) enough.

• How private label can protect your margins when big brands get undercut online
• Why skincare should be part of every treatment journey, not an afterthought
• How to turn one treatment into a complete client plan
• Why patient and staff education drive loyalty
• Why TikTok skincare trends can cause real damageTune in and learn how to lead the conversations you’re meant to lead.

Stop Abusing Retinol: The Microbiome Conversation ft. Dr. Tiina Meder
Episode 12
Show notes
Somewhere along the way, the beauty industry decided that more is better. More retinol. More exfoliation. More concentration. More products being pushed to people whose skin never asked for half of it.
In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Dr. Tiina Meder, dermatologist, cosmetic safety expert and founder of Meder Beauty, to talk about why that mindset is catching up with us. Tiina talks about the science behind peptides, proteins, probiotics, dysbiosis, the gut-skin-brain axis and why product education should go deeper than branded talking points. She also challenges estheticians to partner with brands that actually teach anatomy, physiology and ingredient function instead of handing them a sales script dressed up as education.

• Why brand education should teach skin anatomy and physiology, not just product benefits

• Why retinol is powerful, overused and in need of more professional control
• What the microbiome actually does for skin immunity, resilience and aging
• How the gut, skin and brain are connected through inflammation and stress
• Why acne, depression and inflammation cannot always be treated as separate issues

Tiina has educated beauty professionals in more than 40 countries and continues to advocate for a more ethical, informed and safety-conscious beauty industry. Stop Freestyling on People’s Faces ft. Lyn Ross
Episode 11
Show notes
The esthetics industry loves a new tool, a new peel, a new device, a new protocol - anything that looks like the next “must-have treatment”. But not all that glitters is gold.
In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Lyn Ross, founder of Institut’ DERMed, to talk about what real professional mastery looks like. Lyn shares how her own struggles with acne and oily skin shaped her career, how physician referrals helped build her reputation and the big esthetician knowledge gap no one wants to talk about.
What You'll Learn:
•
How Lyn’s personal skin struggles became the beginning of a corrective skincare career
• Why Institut’ DERMed grew out of a real education gap in chemical peels and skin function
• Why pH, concentration and formulation knowledge should be basic professional hygiene
• Why treatment stacking can become dangerous when ticket-building outruns clinical judgment
• How client education turns the end of the appointment into a trust-building moment
• Why touch therapy, energetic presence, and human connection still belong in modern estheticsThe big theme: esthetics is not just about what you can do to the skin. It is about knowing what the skin can handle, what the client needs and when your hands matter more than the machine.

Lyn Ross is the founder of Institut’ DERMed, a corrective skincare practice, advanced education institution and professional skincare brand.
