  1. F1 Espresso News: Ferrari’s Singapore Strategy Questions and F1’s Rwanda Deal | Singapore Debrief

    Show notes

Max Verstappen made it back-to-back wins in Singapore. But Ferrari’s strategy left plenty to pick through, with Lewis Hamilton taking responsibility for his decisions and questions still hanging over how the team handled his race alongside Charles Leclerc.

This week I look at Hamilton’s early stop, why the Hard tyre wasn’t a workable option, and the time lost behind Leclerc when the two drivers were on different strategies. Then comes the lap 39 Virtual Safety Car, the missed pit stop and the communication between Hamilton and the pit wall. Could Ferrari have come away with a double podium? I explain where I think that opportunity slipped away, and what the available radio evidence can actually tell us.

There’s also McLaren’s last-lap Sprint clash between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, a Sprint with nine retirements, and Verstappen looking comfortable throughout the weekend. I get into Mercedes’ upgrade struggles, their development direction for 2027, the discussion around rotating front-wing devices, and why I think Liam Lawson has earned another season in the Red Bull family.

Then it’s onto Formula 1’s planned return to Africa. Rwanda’s 10-year agreement will bring the championship to a new purpose-built circuit in the early 2030s, marking the continent’s first Grand Prix since 1993. I discuss the circuit plans, local infrastructure and the questions around where the race could fit on the calendar.

  2. F1 Espresso News: FIA Error Overshadows Verstappen's Sprint Pole | Singapore Friday Debrief

    Show notes

This week I'm back in the shed for a special Singapore Friday Debrief, and once again the FIA has some serious questions to answer after an Overtake Mode error affected Sprint Qualifying.

I break down what went wrong during SQ1, why I don't think the session was fair for every driver, and why two consecutive race weekends with FIA operational failures simply isn't a good look for the governing body. I also look at Williams' frustration, James Vowles' comments, Carlos Sainz's compromised lap, and why rerunning SQ1 wasn't a straightforward solution.

Then it's onto Max Verstappen's Sprint pole, his single flying lap on the Soft tyres, and the stewards' decision after he overtook Lewis Hamilton under yellow flags. The FIA found a breach of the regulations but decided against a penalty.

I also get into Mercedes running two different car specifications, Toto Wolff's concerns about the latest upgrade and what it means for development heading into 2027. Plus, McLaren's improved pace, comments from Andrea Stella and Zak Brown, Pirelli's tyre findings, and the strategy options for Saturday's 21-lap Sprint.

  3. F1 Espresso News: Madrid's Dull Race, the 2027 F1 Calendar Shake-Up & Monaco's Sprint Move

    Season 3

    Show notes

This week I break down Madrid, one of the worst races I've seen this season, plus the headline changes in the 2027 F1 calendar, including Monaco joining the Sprint format.

I get into why Madrid's layout killed the racing more than strategy did, the Hamilton and Verstappen clash on lap one, and why I don't think changing the safety car rules is the answer. Then it's onto 2027: Bahrain opening the season, Abu Dhabi closing it, Sprint weekends loaded into the title run-in, and why Monaco getting a Sprint is a commercial call more than a sporting one.

I also cover the calendar gap that avoids clashing with Le Mans and the Indy 500, what that could mean for Lando Norris, plus the latest driver market rumours: Ocon, Freddie Slater's F3-to-F2 move, Isack Hadjar's injury and what it means for Red Bull, and Arvid Lindblad's rise.

  4. F1 Espresso News: Ferrari's Number One Dilemma, Mercedes Team Orders & Latest F1 News

    Show notes

Should Ferrari back Hamilton over Leclerc? This week I break down the number one debate, plus Mercedes team orders at Zandvoort, the FIA stepping in over abuse aimed at stewards, and Monaco's third place still unresolved two months on.

I get into why Russell was asked to move for Antonelli, the fallout from Colapinto's penalty, and why the 2027 driver market is looking far more settled than anyone expected — even with a few teams still working through it.

  7. PARAGRAPH 42: How One FIA Ruling Could Change Formula 1 Forever | Monaco Gasly Penalty Explained

    Show notes

PARAGRAPH 42: How One FIA Ruling Could Change Formula 1 Forever | Monaco Gasly Penalty Explained

Six drivers penalised for a speed limit they couldn't physically meet. One penalty overturned. And buried in the stewards' own document is a single paragraph that gives every team in Formula 1 a reason to never serve a disputed penalty again.

In Monaco, Formula One Management provided incorrect distance data for the first pit lane timing zone. A barrier change brought in for Cadillac's arrival as the eleventh team meant drivers could take a shorter line through that zone than the measurement accounted for. The stewards were given wrong data, issued penalties in good faith, queried it mid race, and were told everything was fine. It wasn't.

Alpine's right of review proved Gasly never exceeded 60km/h. His penalties were overturned. But the stewards confirmed in Document 99 that no regulation exists allowing them to undo a penalty already served during a race. That's paragraph 42. And every team in the paddock has read it.

In this episode I break down the measurement failure, why the stewards weren't wrong, what paragraph 42 means for how teams approach disputed penalties going forward, and why this isn't just a Monaco story.

F1 Espresso News: Red Bull's Best Engine vs Mercedes' Best Car at Barcelona

The ADUO results are out. Red Bull Ford are Formula 1's benchmark power unit. Mercedes are more than two percent behind. Ferrari, Audi and Honda are more than four percent down.

And yet Mercedes have won every race in 2026. All six. Russell took the opener, Antonelli has won the five since.

So what is actually going on? Terry Widdows breaks down why the ADUO result might not be the bad news for Mercedes it first appears, why the teams who lobbied for the compression ratio test may have handed four teams a free mid-season upgrade, and why Barcelona is the first circuit this season that can start answering the questions Monaco never could.

    In this episode:

    • The ADUO system explained simply and why the pecking order matters
    • Why Mercedes winning everything while 2% down tells a very specific story
    • McLaren, Williams and Alpine: the customer teams who benefit from the Mercedes upgrade
    • Why the non-Mercedes powered teams may have shot themselves in the foot
