  1. #698 - NYC Marathon. Garmin Noosa Triathlon. Andreas Almgren.

    Episode 698

    Show notes

Toby Gualter raced to victory at the Auckland Marathon last weekend in a time of 2:15:29. Making his official marathon debut, the 25-year-old completely crushed the previous men's course record of 2:17:43, which had stood for 20 years since it was set by Dale Warrander in 2006.

Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the 2026 New York City Marathon on Sunday, 1 November delivering an historic victory in his official debut at the marathon distance. The 31-year-old clocked a spectacular time of 2:06:01, utilizing a devastating late surge inside Central Park over the final mile to pull away from Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa. With this triumph, Almgren became the first Swedish runner in history to win the iconic race and the first European man to take the title in 30 years.

The Nike Apex worn by Andreas Almgren is Nike's new premier "hyper shoe" designed for elite marathon racing. It's scheduled to officially release to the general public in January 2027.

What does Norwegian-style training look like for Almgren…we outline the reported numbers. About 230 km per week, double-threshold days, tightly controlled lactate levels, sessions of 16 × 1 km intervals and heat exposure that runs year-round.

Claire Slater won the free race entry to the Noosa Triathlon. We find out how it all went.

Jack has taken on a new role for para triathlon in New Zealand and will be guiding for para triathlete Mike Whittaker.

  3. Dr Amanda Stevens-Sadler: Gut Health and Athletic Performance

    Episode 696

    Show notes

Dr. Amanda Sadler is a Fellowship-trained Sports Medicine Physician and Functional Medicine Certified Professional. Amanda's focus has been on primary care and functional medicine. Functional medicine looks at the root cause of a disease from the cellular level to understand its influence on the whole system.

Her training as a doctor has been shaped in part due to her own athletic career and her own missed diagnoses. She was a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier in 2004 and 2008, a leading competitor on the ITU circuit, and in 2013 she won her first Ironman event in Brazil. Amanda dealt with gastrointestinal issues throughout much of her early career. She knows that her career as a triathlete could have been different had those issues been solved earlier and treated correctly.

In this conversation, Dr. Amanda Stevens-Sadler shares her journey from being a professional triathlete to a physician. She highlights the importance of gut health in athletic performance and the need for a shift towards functional medicine, which focuses on individualized care and optimal health rather than just treating symptoms. Dr. Sadler emphasizes the signs of dysfunction that athletes should not ignore and the differences between conventional and functional medicine in addressing health issues.

We discuss the intricate relationship between gut health, stress and athletic performance - emphasizing the importance of personalized approaches to health, particularly for athletes - and introduce her Champion Athlete Method, which focuses on optimizing performance through understanding individual needs and managing stress effectively.

    Show notes

The race within a race… Guy and Kate gear up for the IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast this weekend.

We review the racing from the Supertri Pro Series Final in Jersey.

British professional triathlete Joe Skipper has been handed an 18-month competition ban for an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) caused by three whereabouts failures within a 12-month window.

Peptides in triathlon - the line between recovery, anti-aging treatments and performance enhancement. We consider how accessible these treatments may become and whether existing testing rules can keep pace.

We chat to Bruna Maia and Fabienne Maia of Augo Training. Augo is an intelligent assistant software platform designed specifically for endurance sports coaches and their athletes. It provides a central platform that streamlines communication, daily task prioritisation, performance data analysis and workout planning acting as an 'intelligence layer' for sports coaching. The platform uses artificial intelligence to remember client preferences, track past injuries and flag exactly which athletes need immediate plan adjustments. Ultimately, they handle the heavy data crunching and paperwork so that human coaches can save time and focus on building the all-important coach/athlete relationship.
