EP 176 - Behind The Turnstiles 50th Anniversary Edition (Part 1 - With John Jackson)
Episode 176
Show notes
Billy Joel's album Turnstiles turns 50 this year, and to celebrate, Billy Joel is getting a major anniversary release with the Turnstiles – 50th Anniversary Edition, a 4CD + Blu-ray box set arriving December 11, 2026.
For Part One of our special series on Glass Houses – A Billy Joel Podcast, we're joined by John Jackson, Director of the Billy Joel Archive and producer of the box set. We talk with John about how the whole project got started, how it came together, the many people involved (including us), and what goes into putting together a release of this size. We get into the track selection, the research, the archival material, and all the work that goes into making a collection like this happen.
The set is packed with previously unreleased recordings, demos, live performances, alternate versions, and the complete Billy Joel Tonight concert film. But getting everything together was a project in itself, and John takes us through the process and some of the stories behind it.
We also talk about why this release is so important beyond just celebrating the 50th anniversary of Turnstiles. Its success could help pave the way for more releases from the Billy Joel Archives, and that's something every Billy Joel fan should be interested in. There's a lot to get into, and this is just the beginning.

Episode 168
Show notes
In this episode, we're taking a closer look at four songs that made the journey from Billy Joel's 1976 album Turnstiles to his 1981 live album Songs in the Attic. Why did Billy choose to revisit these particular tracks, and what changed between their original studio recordings and their live performances?
We'll compare the arrangements, instrumentation, vocals, energy, and production of each song, exploring how years of touring transformed them from promising studio recordings into fan-favorite live performances.
Whether you prefer the intimate feel of Turnstiles or the electrifying versions on Songs in the Attic, this episode celebrates the evolution of four standout songs and examines why Billy Joel felt they deserved a second chance in the spotlight.

The 1970s is the decade when Steven Spielberg and George Lucas created the modern blockbuster with Jaws and Star Wars.
