How to Beat Constipation and Bloating on a GLP-1 w/ Courtney McCormick
Season 1, Episode 131
Show notes
Most people on GLP-1s already know to watch their protein. But more than 90% of Americans weren't getting enough fiber to begin with, and eating less on a GLP-1 can make that gap even bigger. In this episode, recorded live at FNCE, Ana sits down with registered dietitian Courtney McCormick from Olipop to talk about why "just eat more fiber" can backfire, how to add it without the bloating, and what happened in a study that swapped regular cola for Olipop.
IN THIS EPISODE
- Why GLP-1s can widen a fiber gap most people already have
- Why not all fibers work the same, and why constipation isn't always about fiber
- The "low and slow" way to add fiber, and why fluids matter so much
- Why Olipop put prebiotic fiber in a soda in the first place
- Olipop's soda swap study: blood sugar after Vintage Cola vs. regular cola
- Why GLP-1s can lower your thirst, and how much fluid to aim for
- Does coffee, tea, or soda count? Plus carbonation and electrolytes
- Small, easy swaps to cut sugary drinksSPONSORS

Why Your Employer Might Stop Covering Your GLP-1 w/ Annie Gazda
Season 1, Episode 130
Show notes
Two people with similar health histories can get completely different answers about GLP-1 coverage at work, and the reason often has less to do with them than with decisions they never see. Annie Gazda, a registered nurse who leads clinical solutions at Vida Health, explains how employers decide whether to cover GLP-1s, why some are cutting them entirely while others keep paying, and how FDA labeling shapes who qualifies. She also shares what she calls responsible prescribing, and why the people who stop their medication because of side effects are the ones employers worry about most.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- Annie's path from the emergency department to digital health
- What a virtual care program like Vida does, and how it works alongside your primary care doctor
- Why so many people get a GLP-1 with almost no follow-up support
- A dinner party story about sarcopenia that says a lot about how GLP-1s are being prescribed
- "Right patient, right time, right treatment": Annie's take on responsible prescribing
- How FDA labeling and an employer's own claims data shape who qualifies
- The two camps of employers: those cutting GLP-1 coverage and those keeping it
- Why the investment falls apart when people stop because of side effects
- What members may be asked to track to keep their prescription
- Medical nutrition therapy and support for tapering off
- Where GLP-1 coverage could be headed as more medications reach the market**SPONSORS**

How GLP-1s Can Change Your Fertility Before, During, and After Pregnancy w/ Dr. Sasha Hakman
Season 1, Episode 129
Show notes
Can a GLP-1 actually change your fertility? For many women with PMOS (formerly called PCOS), the answer may be yes, and that changes everything from birth control to baby planning. Reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Sasha Hakman walks through the whole arc: how GLP-1-assisted weight loss can help restart ovulation, why the guidance is still to stop two months before trying to conceive, what early data suggests if you get pregnant while on one, and why some birth control pills may be less reliable on these medications. Then she and Ana get honest about prenatals, breastfeeding, the pressure to "bounce back" after a baby, and a pattern she has noticed in a handful of men's semen analyses.
IN THIS EPISODE
- What a fertility doctor does besides IVF
- How PMOS (formerly PCOS) disrupts ovulation, and how GLP-1-assisted weight loss can help restore it
- Why you still stop a GLP-1 two months before trying to conceive
- Metformin as a bridge, and why pregnancy weight gain can be harder after stopping
- What early data suggests about pregnancies that happen while on a GLP-1
- What to do if you find out you're pregnant on a GLP-1
- Early, experimental reports from women with endometriosis
- Why birth control pills may be less reliable on a GLP-1, and which options are less affected
- How GLP-1s can make irregular cycles more predictable
- Why every woman of reproductive age should take a prenatal, and the folic acid vs. methylfolate debate
- Prenatals after 60 and the iron question
- Breastfeeding, milk supply, and when to restart a GLP-1 after delivery
- The postpartum "bounce back" pressure, and why you should give yourself time
- GLP-1s and men's fertility, plus why men should prepare at least three months before tryingABOUT THE GUEST

GLP-1 After Gastric Bypass and What You Need to Know w/ Dr. Marilyn Tan
Season 1, Episode 128
Show notes
After gastric bypass, some people make so much of their own GLP-1 that their blood sugar rockets after a meal and then crashes, and the juice or glucose tabs meant to rescue them can restart the whole cycle. Stanford endocrinologist Dr. Marilyn Tan explains post-bariatric hypoglycemia, a condition many patients live with for years before anyone names it, and whether GLP-1 medications make sense after surgery for weight regain. Then she shares phase 3 results for avexitide, an investigational drug that works in the opposite direction from the GLP-1 medications everyone is talking about.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- Hypoglycemia vs. hyperglycemia in plain language, including what "level 3" low blood sugar means
- What your body's own GLP-1 does after you eat, and why gastric bypass and sleeve surgery amplify it
- Why diabetes can resolve within days of surgery, before the weight comes off
- Whether GLP-1 medications are safe to use after bariatric surgery for weight regain
- What post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH) is, who tends to get it, and why it often shows up six months or more after surgery
- The spike-then-crash pattern one to three hours after a carb-heavy meal
- Why the usual low blood sugar advice can backfire for PBH, and what helps stabilize instead
- The strict PBH diet (about 30 grams of carbs per meal, 15 per snack) and how it can tip into malnutrition
- Why PBH is underdiagnosed, and the new ICD-10 diagnosis code
- Inside the phase 3 LUCIDITY trial of avexitide, a GLP-1 blocker that is not FDA approved
- What GLP-1 agonists do and don't do for people who already have PBH
- What's next for avexitide and who else it may help**ABOUT THE GUEST**

Improve Body Composition on a GLP-1 With Minimal Strength Training w/ Andrew Menechian
Season 1, Episode 126
Show notes
If the scale has stalled or you're worried about losing muscle on a GLP-1, that number may not be telling you the whole story. Fitness coach and competitive powerlifter Andrew Menechian explains why body composition matters more than your weight or BMI, how to set a protein target that actually fits your body, and the minimum strength training it takes to hold on to muscle. - Beginner gains: why people new to strength training can build muscle and lose fat at the same time
- The two things that protect muscle on a GLP-1: protein and resistance training
- How to set a protein target based on lean body mass instead of total body weight
- How much strength training it takes to maintain muscle versus build it

What Your GLP-1 Is Doing for Your Heart Beyond Weight Loss w/ Dr. Sirisha Vadali
Season 1, Episode 125
Show notes
Most people think of a GLP-1 as a weight loss medication, but for your heart, the story starts before the scale moves much at all. Board-certified cardiologist and lipidologist Dr. Sirisha Vadali explains what the research shows about GLP-1s and cardiovascular risk, the simple routine she starts her patients on, and what she monitors along the way. You'll also hear why she doesn't recommend a GLP-1 for family history alone, and about one genetic cholesterol marker that diet and exercise can't change, a lab she says everyone should have checked once in their lifetime.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- How GLP-1s went from diabetes drugs to heart protection, with or without diabetes
- Why some heart benefit appears before major weight loss, and why no one knows exactly how yet
- Who GLP-1s are currently indicated for in cardiovascular risk reduction, and why semaglutide (Wegovy) is the one with outcomes data so far
- Why muscle mass, protein, and strength training belong in every GLP-1 plan
- Dr. Vadali's simple phase one: 100 grams of protein (30 to 40 grams in the morning), 25 grams of fiber, water, and strength training twice a week at home
- Watching blood pressure, heart rate, hydration, and kidney function on a GLP-1
- Fatigue and low motivation after the shot: what to rule out first
- Whether family history alone is a reason to start a GLP-1
- The heart labs she checks, including Lp(a), ApoB, hs-CRP, and a coronary calcium score
- What Lp(a) is, why it's a one-time lifetime screening, and the treatments expected in the next few years
- A word of caution on buying unapproved triple agonists online
- Simple longevity habits: sleep, stress, walking after meals, and the 80/20 approach
- Why hunger coming back isn't a reason to panic**ABOUT THE GUEST**

Oral GLP-1 Pill for Weight Maintenance: A Dietitian's Real Results w/ Whitney Black, MS RD
Season 1, Episode 124
Show notes
A daily GLP-1 pill sounds like an easy way to maintain your weight loss, but what happens when it doesn't work like the shot did? Registered dietitian Whitney Black, who lives with type 1 diabetes, shares what happened when she switched from Zepbound to Foundayo (orforglipron) for maintenance, and why she went back after two months. You'll hear how her fullness cues, blood sugar, and insulin needs changed, and what she tells clients about weight regain. The surprise wasn't the food noise. It was a different signal that quietly went missing. This is one person's experience, not a verdict on how the pill will work for everyone.
IN THIS EPISODE
- Whitney's path to Zepbound with type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto's, and PCOS
- Why hunger and fullness dysregulation is biology, not a personal failing
- Where GLP-1s stand for type 1 diabetes, and why insulin changes need your care team
- What Foundayo is (an oral GLP-1 from Eli Lilly, not tirzepatide) and how its dosing differs
- How her fullness cues and blood sugar changed on Foundayo, and the roughly 15 pounds she regained in two months
- Cost versus effectiveness when choosing a maintenance option
- Switching back to Zepbound and slowly titrating up again

Ana Reisdorf, Registered Dietitian and GLP-1 user, joins muscle and bone researcher Mark Hamrick to explore staying strong during GLP-1 weight loss, perimenopause, and menopause. Season 2, Episode 117
Show notes
You can feel good about your GLP-1 weight loss and still wonder why your face looks different. Ana Reisdorf, Registered Dietitian and GLP-1 user, talks with wound-healing scientist Brian Pilcher, PhD, about what people call "Ozempic face," how volume loss differs from loose skin, and the treatment options available today. Could future treatments help the body rebuild some of its own tissue?
Brian explains the science behind tissue regeneration and what his company, Conexeu Sciences, is studying. Its technology remains preclinical, with safety and effectiveness still to be established in human trials.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- How weight loss can change facial volume and skin support
- The differences between fillers, biostimulators, and skin-tightening treatments
- Why tissue regeneration involves cells, biological signals, and a supporting framework
- What early research can tell us, and what still needs to be tested in people
- Why wound-care development and potential aesthetic applications have different timelines
- Unanswered questions about GLP-1s and skin, plus caution around exosome claims**ABOUT THE GUEST**

GLP-1s and Menopause: Is It the Medication or Your Hormones? w/ Sharon Lemoine MSN, ARNP
Season 2, Episode 115
Show notes
Poor sleep, mood changes, low energy, and new weight around the midsection can be easy to blame on aging or GLP-1 treatment alone. - What hormones do and why hormone-related symptoms can be difficult to recognize
- Common signs of changing estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels

- Questions to discuss with a provider when considering hormone testing or therapy
- How menopause, muscle loss, and insulin resistance may contribute to changes in body composition
- Why protein, resistance training, and body-composition monitoring matter during GLP-1 treatment
- How Sharon decides when a GLP-1 may fit into a broader health plan
- Hormone-related symptoms and low testosterone in men

Your GLP-1 Goal Weight Was Never the Real Finish Line w/ Suzy Chase
Season 2, Episode 114
Show notes
Reaching your goal weight on a GLP-1 can feel like the finish line, until the scale jumps two pounds and the old panic rushes back. In this conversation, Ana Reisdorf and Suzy Chase unpack why maintenance is a different job from active weight loss, how strength and cardiovascular fitness can replace “smaller” as the goal, and how Suzy uses AI-assisted tracking to put day-to-day changes into context. The question underneath it all: does every change on the scale actually require a response?

GLP-1 Mental Health: What Weight Loss Can't Fix w/ Tracey Yokas
Season 2, Episode 112
Show notes
A GLP-1 can quiet food noise, but it may not quiet the voice saying you’re lazy, failing, or still not good enough. Ana talks with author, artist, mental health advocate, and fellow GLP-1 user Tracey Yokas about how decades of dieting, body shame, and learned family patterns can follow us even when the medication is working. You’ll learn how to recognize action driven by shame, build a more compassionate response through therapy, journaling, art, and support, and understand why the discomfort you expect weight loss to erase may need a different kind of healing.
**IN THIS EPISODE**
- How being placed on a diet at age 11 shaped Tracey’s relationship with food and her body
- How unhealthy patterns around food and self-worth can pass through families
- What her family’s experience with disordered eating taught her about healing
- How therapy helped Tracey recognize the role of trauma and self-blame
- Why awareness is only the first step toward changing an old pattern
- How to tell the difference between action driven by shame and action rooted in care
- Why rest does not have to be earned
- What changed when GLP-1 medication quieted Tracey’s food noise
- Why frustration, urgency, and old self-criticism resurfaced even while the medication was working
- How therapy, journaling, meditation, art, and trusted relationships can provide a safe place to begin**ABOUT THE GUEST**
Tracey Yokas creates stuff. When she isn’t writing about mental health and wellness, she can be found playing with paint, glitter, and glue.
